WARDOGS SAM Site Guide: How to Build Anti-Air That Works

How to build a Talon 9K-SAM anti-air site on a walled recon tower that snipers, Urals and rockets struggle to break, and how Season 2's reload and restock changes cut two ammo pallets from about 75 missiles to 18. Also compares the Talon with the CIWS, Verba and new Gepard.

🎯 The core idea

A WARDOGS SAM site is a Talon 9K-SAM launcher on a raised, walled platform, fed from a FOB full of ammo supplies. Build it close enough to the fighting that helicopters actually fly past, high enough that ground players cannot see the gunner, and closed off so nobody can climb or drive in. Season 02 made the Talon cheap to build but four times hungrier for ammo, so every missile now counts.

  • free costs nothing
  • cheap small cost
  • setup needs preparation
  • grind pays off slowly
  • skip the thing to stop doing

What a SAM site is and why it works

setup In WARDOGS a SAM site is not a single item you buy. It is a small fortress you build around a Talon 9K-SAM, the buildable anti-air missile launcher. This guide follows the build SwoleBenji shows in his video "Wardogs The BEST Way To Build a SAM Site" (uploaded 20 September 2026, during Season 01): a FOB, a recon tower, a ring of concrete Bremmer walls with a hidden door, a second ring of walls on top of the tower, the Talon sitting on top of that, and hedgehogs all around the outside.

The point of the design is height. The gunner sits in the Talon's seat above the wall line, so a player standing at ground level near the base cannot see their head. Only someone far away, on a hill or in a taller building, gets an angle. The Talon also has a full 360 degree view from up there, which matters because helicopters can come from any side.

The video was recorded before Season 02 (Update 0.2.0, live 15 October 2026). The build itself still works, but the Talon's ammo economy, several build costs and the money you earn from it all changed. Each section below says what is different now. For every other change in that patch, see the WARDOGS Season 2 patch notes guide.

Talon, CIWS, Verba or Gepard: which anti-air to use

cheap WARDOGS gives you four ways to do anti-air (AA), and they suit different jobs:

OptionWhat it isSeason 02 costBest for
Talon 9K-SAMBuildable missile launcher, manned650 build supplies (was 1,000); each restock uses 200 ammo suppliesCovering a wide area from a fixed, high position
Vanguard CIWSBuildable cannon, manned from a terminal1,200 build supplies (was 1,500)Close defence of a base; kills a Havoc in about 6 seconds
9K333 VerbaShoulder-fired missile launcher you carrySupport track, now unlocks at level 14 (was 16)Mobile anti-air, e.g. a car full of launchers
Flakpanzer GepardNew Season 02 anti-air tank$14,000 vendor price, Driver level 25 and $300,000 to unlockChasing helicopters across the map

SwoleBenji compares the SAM site to the other common approach: filling a Kodiak with Verba launchers. His Season 01 numbers put that at about $12,900, or roughly $993 per rocket, so you must hit about a third of your shots just to break even. The Kodiak loadout screen above is from that comparison. Those prices are the video's and were not in the patch notes, so treat them as a rough guide.

The CIWS deserves its own note. The 2 October hotfix made it kill a Havoc in about 6 seconds instead of 12, after an earlier patch had weakened it too much. Season 02 then cut its build cost from 1,500 to 1,200, tuned its damage against structures (it shreds light cover but struggles against heavy fortifications) and made it take 2.25 times longer to kill a spawn vehicle. A CIWS belongs inside a base, protecting the base. A Talon on a tower covers more sky. Where to put a CIWS inside a base is covered in the WARDOGS FOB guide.

The Flakpanzer Gepard is completely new in Season 02 and is not in either video. The fan wiki lists it at $10,000. The patch notes say $14,000, so trust the patch notes.

Season 02 changed the Talon's missile count

skip Do not plan around the video's missile count. In Season 01 a Talon restock used 50 ammo supplies and reloaded in 2 seconds. That is why SwoleBenji's two ammo pallets (1,800 supplies each, 3,600 in total) were good for about 75 missiles. The Season 02 patch notes changed the Talon:

Talon 9K-SAMSeason 01 (video)Season 02 (now)
Build cost1,000 build supplies650 build supplies
Reload2 seconds5 seconds
Ammo supplies per restock50200
Restocks from two ammo palletsabout 72about 18
Reward the enemy gets for destroying it$2,000$650

So two ammo pallets now give you about 18 missiles, not 75. The developers said they wanted the Talon to cost more to keep active. That changes how you play the site. Do not fire at a helicopter that is just passing the edge of your range, or at targets you cannot lock. Wait until it is close and committed, take the shot, and use the 5 second reload to stay low behind the wall. The HUD in the seat shows the missile loaded in the launcher and the reserve next to it, so keep an eye on the reserve and ask your logistics players for more ammo before it runs out.

Shopping list and what the SAM site costs now

cheap SwoleBenji's full shopping list, at the prices shown in his video:

ItemWherePrice in the video
Scout Backpack (8 slots, the cheapest that fits the FOB)Gear$350
Forward Operating BaseItems$7,500
Large HammerSpecialist$2,400
2 build supplies, in your backpackItems$20
Ural truckVehicles$5,000
2 Ammo Supply Pallets, loaded on the UralLogistics, Pallets$800
6 build supplies, in the Ural's 6 slotsBuilding$60
Total$16,130

The FOB price ($7,500) and Large Hammer price ($2,400) match the Season 1 changelog, and Season 02 did not change the FOB, hammer or base Ural prices. One new step stands in your way, though: Season 02 locked the Ammo Supply Pallet behind WARDOG level 9 and a $25,000 unlock. It used to be available from the start. Without it you have no way to carry 3,600 ammo to the site yourself, so either unlock it first or have a logistics player bring the pallets.

The Large Hammer is a Support track unlock (level 8, $75,000 since the Season 1 changelog). The video builds everything with it, and Season 02 makes it more worthwhile: the medium hammer now adds less per swing, while the large hammer's build rate is unchanged.

The video's money pitch ("you profit just for building it") has also weakened. SwoleBenji says unloading his two pallets in the control zone paid about $10,000, and that building the site in the zone left him about $7,000 ahead. Season 02 halved the reward for deploying a supply pallet, from $2,500 to $1,250 in the control zone, with a new streak bonus of +$250 per pallet in a row. Expect a much smaller profit for building, and expect to make your money from kills instead. For ways to earn without a SAM site, see the WARDOGS money guide.

Unloading the ammo pallets into the base

free Drive to a flat, high spot. SwoleBenji says the drive takes 3 to 5 minutes, and he prefers spots in or near the control zone. Place the FOB, then do two things before building anything:

  • Hide the spare hammers. A new FOB comes with spare hammers in its inventory (a medium and a small one in LiteralWedgeOfCheese's playtest video). Put them somewhere your teammates won't find them, or take them out and drop them in tall grass. SwoleBenji's reason: teammates grab them and spend your build supplies on walls you did not plan, and a SAM site has very few supplies to spare.
  • Unload everything into the FOB. Crouch next to each pallet and hold F. It takes a few seconds, and each pallet adds 1,800 supplies. Then right click the build supplies in the Ural's inventory to take them out, and right click the FOB to put them in.

Then park the Ural well away from where you are building. LiteralWedgeOfCheese notes that vehicles left alone become unclaimed and, once empty, explode after a while, and a truck burning next to your walls can wreck your work. SwoleBenji's truck got stuck in a tree on one run and could not be reset, which lost him the whole $16,130.

Building tip from the video: do not hold the left mouse button. Swing, let go on the hit, and click again. SwoleBenji says this builds about twice as fast.

Walls first: Hesco blocks and a hidden door

setup The build starts on the FOB's computer side. In order:

  1. Put a small Hesco block at the front corner, to the left of the FOB's computer, angled slightly away from it, then snap a second block next to it.
  2. Place the recon tower and rotate it until the ladder is on the far side from you, then snap it so its block touches your Hesco.
  3. Put a Bremmer wall against the tower with its curb facing the tower, break the leftmost placement block with V, and build an outward-opening door there.
  4. Wall in front of the door so the opening is not visible from outside. In the finished base, the only way in is a narrow gap you jump into.
  5. Ring the whole base with Bremmer walls: curb facing in, then out, then in, so there are no gaps. Leave one wall piece as a step you can climb up to the door.
  6. Put one Hesco block on top of the doorway so nobody can climb over it.

Build the walls from inside the ring, so you can crouch if a sniper finds you, and finish the corners first so you do not have to go outside to reach them. Season 02 roughly doubled what these pieces cost: a Bremmer wall went from 15 to 32 build supplies and a door from 22 to 80. The video's walls were cheap enough that SwoleBenji had about 400 supplies left at the end. At Season 02 prices you will have less, so bring extra build supplies or ask logistics for a drop before you start the top floor.

Two more Season 02 changes help this design. Doors can no longer be broken open with a hammer, only with the Halligan bar or explosives. And you now earn $75 for closing a door on a friendly FOB.

Placing the Talon on the tower without getting stuck

setup Climb onto the recon tower and build a second ring of Bremmer walls on its roof: the first three with the curb facing you, the rest facing outward. Then stack four Hesco blocks on top of the four that come with the tower.

Now place the Talon 9K-SAM. You can only place it from the top of those blocks, not from below. Rotate it until its ammo crate faces the side your entrance is on. Then:

  • Do not stand on the Talon's footprint while you build it. SwoleBenji got pulled into the Hesco blocks this way and could not get out without taking it apart, and taking it apart costs supplies you probably do not have.
  • Stand on the top wall, at the corner furthest to the right, and back off as far as you can without falling. That gives the yellow build marker room to stay still while you hammer it. The marker moves once you pass about 25%.
  • If you are under fire, drop down and build it from below. It is much slower because you cannot hit the yellow marker, but it is safer.

From about 75% you can climb into the seat from below. Jumping in this game has rules worth knowing: you cannot jump high if you are wounded, carrying a lot, or pressing jump over and over. Wait a second or two, jump once, and press space to climb onto the ledge. The same rules protect you later: SwoleBenji had an enemy with a full kit fail to climb up to his Talon because he was too heavy.

Hedgehogs stop the Ural climb

cheap Walls alone are not enough. SwoleBenji shows the easiest way into almost any base: park a Ural next to the wall, climb onto its bumper and roof, and step over. Hedgehogs stop that.

  • Space them about a Ural's width apart or closer. If they are too far apart, a Ural driven fast at the gap gets through.
  • Put them a short distance from the wall, not touching it, so a truck cannot reach the wall at all.
  • Do not let teammates build Hesco blocks next to your walls. A hedgehog to a Hesco to a concrete wall makes a staircase. In one of SwoleBenji's matches the enemy team used exactly that route to capture his FOB, and he used it himself to get back to his Talon.

If you play alone, you can close off your door completely with a wall and build a new one when you want to leave.

Snipers, sightlines and the seat glitch

setup This design protects you from snipers but does not make you safe from them. Location matters most: if a hill or tall building nearby looks down onto the tower roof, a sniper can hit you there. Pick a spot where nothing nearby is higher than you.

SwoleBenji points out two weak spots:

  • Small gaps between wall pieces. At some angles there are narrow cracks a good shot can hit you through. Close up any gap you can see light through.
  • The seat glitch. Sometimes your character ends up sitting on top of the Talon's sight instead of in the seat, which puts your head above the wall. You cannot see this yourself; a teammate has to tell you. SwoleBenji was shot from 73 meters this way by a player in a ghillie suit hidden in a bush. If you keep getting hit in the seat, get out and back in.

If you want to know where those snipers sit and how they think, the WARDOGS sniper guide covers sniper positions from the other side.

Rockets, mortars and repairing the platform

grind According to SwoleBenji, the weakest part of the site is the wooden foundation under the Talon, where it sticks out past the concrete. His claims, which are from the video and not in the patch notes:

  • A rocket deals the same damage as breaking a piece with your hammer (V): about 11% of the foundation, so the ninth rocket destroys it if nobody repairs it.
  • Repairing eight rockets' worth of damage cost him only about six supplies, and he could repair faster than one enemy could fire and reload.
  • A mortar shell's damage is spread across everything it hits, so the concrete walls and blocks absorb most of it. He says a direct mortar hit on the FOB did only about 3% damage, and that the FOB takes about 34 mortar shells to destroy.

Keep your hammer and a few build supplies in the base, and repair between shots. SwoleBenji's other answer to mortars is to build a few mortars of his own around the base and fire back.

Season 02 made a full SAM site a more attractive target. Destroying a FOB now pays the attackers up to $7,500 and 250 XP extra, depending on how many supplies are inside it (the bonus is capped at 25,000 supplies). Destroying the Talon itself only pays $650 and the CIWS $1,200.

A simpler bunker version from the playtest

setup LiteralWedgeOfCheese's video "WARDOGS - I Built a SAM Site Overlooking the Battlefield" shows a simpler layout, recorded at the August 2026 playtest before release. He uses a bunker instead of a recon tower, mounts the anti-air launcher on its roof, and builds four Hesco walls directly in front of the bunker. He says this is the trick that lets you fully wall yourself in against snipers.

His choices are different. He builds outside the control zone, in a forest, because nobody comes looking until the launcher starts firing. And he carries his supplies in a large crate rather than a truck. In that playtest the FOB came with 1,200 build supplies, and with his extra supplies he had 2,900. He estimates that ammo gave him about 40 missiles. That was before both the Season 1 launch changes and Season 02, so do not rely on his numbers. Bunkers now cost 200 build supplies (up from 100), and the Talon restock costs explained above apply to his site too.

One more lesson from his video: he left a door open for a screenshot, and enemies came over the wall and killed him. Keep doors shut.

How to shoot down helicopters from the SAM site

free The biggest mistake in SwoleBenji's own matches was location. In one game he built in a far corner of the map to run a drill rig, no enemy helicopter ever came near, and his SAM site was useless all match. Build within sight of the control zone or the routes helicopters use to drop players and supplies.

Once you are in the seat:

  • Let the helicopter come to you. With about 18 missiles from two pallets and a 5 second reload, shoot at helicopters landing, hovering to drop supplies, or circling over the zone, not at fast ones crossing the edge of your range.
  • Stay low while you reload. The gunner is the only weak spot sticking out of the walls.
  • Know what each kill is worth. Season 02 gives every vehicle type its own reward when destroyed:
HelicopterSeason 02 reward for destroying it
MH-6 (unarmed Little Bird)$1,250
Z20 Lakota$1,500
Little Bird AH-6M (miniguns)$6,000
Z20 Lakota (miniguns)$7,500
Little Bird AH-6R (rockets)$9,400
Havoc$14,000

The video says you get $3,000 to $4,000 per helicopter kill. That was true for Season 01. Now an unarmed transport is worth much less and an armed one much more, so save missiles for the armed helicopters when you can. Season 02 also made helicopter cockpit glass work both ways: a crew shooting out through their own glass damages the helicopter as if it was hit from outside.

Pilots, for the other side of this fight, should read the WARDOGS helicopter controls guide before flying near a known SAM site.

How this guide was fact-checked

  • Official Season 02 patch notes (14 October 2026): Talon build cost (1,000 to 650), reload (2 to 5 seconds) and restock (50 to 200 ammo supplies); CIWS build cost (1,500 to 1,200), damage against structures and the 2.25x longer spawn vehicle kill; Bremmer wall, door and bunker costs; doors only breachable with the Halligan bar; the $75 door-closed reward; unfinished pieces collapsing; the Ammo Supply Pallet moving to WARDOG level 9 and $25,000; Verba at Support level 14; the Flakpanzer Gepard's $14,000 price and Driver level 25 / $300,000 unlock; supply pallet deploy reward halved to $1,250 with a streak bonus; FOB destroy bonus; buildable destroy rewards; helicopter destroy rewards; two-way cockpit glass.
  • 2 October 2026 hotfix: the CIWS kills a Havoc in about 6 seconds instead of 12.
  • Season 1 launch changelog (9 September 2026): FOB vendor price $7,500, Large Hammer $2,400 vendor price, Support level 8 and $75,000 unlock.
  • WARDOGS fan wiki: Ural $5,000 and two pallet slots, four FOB supply types. The wiki lists the Gepard at $10,000, which the patch notes contradict ($14,000); we used the patch notes.
  • From the videos only (not confirmed by official sources): SwoleBenji's build order, the $16,130 total, the Verba-Kodiak cost comparison, the $10,000 for two pallets and $7,000 building profit (Season 01), the 11% per rocket, nine rockets, 3% per mortar hit and 34 mortars figures, the seat glitch, and the jump rules. LiteralWedgeOfCheese's 1,200 starting supplies, 2,900 total and about 40 missiles are from the August playtest.
  • Corrections to the video: two ammo pallets now give about 18 Talon missiles, not 75; the Talon reload is 5 seconds, not 2; the Ammo Supply Pallet is no longer available from the start; walls and doors cost about twice as much; helicopter kills no longer pay a flat $3,000 to $4,000; and building the site pays much less than the video shows.

What this guide doesn't answer

  • Exact Talon lock range and missile damage per helicopter. Neither the patch notes nor the wiki give numbers, and the videos do not measure them.
  • How the Gepard performs in practice. It arrived in Season 02 and neither source video shows it.
  • Full FOB base layouts with CIWS and mortar pits. That is a different job, covered in the FOB guide linked above.
  • Exact Season 02 build supply total for this SAM site. The patch notes do not list the recon tower or Hesco block costs, so we cannot add it up reliably.
  • How to fly a helicopter past anti-air. This guide is written for the ground side.

Frequently asked

How do you build a SAM site in WARDOGS?

Place a FOB on high, flat ground near the control zone, unload two ammo supply pallets and build supplies into it, build a recon tower next to it, and ring the base with Bremmer walls behind a hidden door. Then wall the tower roof, stack four Hesco blocks on it and place the Talon 9K-SAM on top with a large hammer. Finish with hedgehogs set a little away from the walls so a Ural cannot be used to climb in.

How many missiles does a Talon get from two ammo pallets in Season 2?

About 18. Two ammo supply pallets hold 3,600 supplies, and since Season 02 each Talon restock uses 200 ammo supplies instead of 50. In Season 01 the same two pallets gave roughly 72 to 75 missiles. The Talon's reload also went from 2 to 5 seconds, while its build cost dropped from 1,000 to 650 build supplies.

Is the CIWS or the Talon better for anti-air in WARDOGS?

They do different jobs. The Vanguard CIWS costs 1,200 build supplies and, since the 2 October hotfix, kills a Havoc in about 6 seconds, so it is best for defending the base it sits in. The Talon costs 650 build supplies and covers far more sky from a high tower, but each restock now uses 200 ammo supplies. Many builders use both.

How do you shoot down helicopters in WARDOGS?

Use a Talon or CIWS from a FOB, a 9K333 Verba launcher (Support level 14) or the new Flakpanzer Gepard (Driver level 25). From a SAM site, wait for helicopters that are landing, hovering or circling the zone instead of ones crossing the edge of your range, and stay behind the wall during the 5 second reload. Armed helicopters pay most in Season 2: $14,000 for a Havoc, $9,400 for a rocket Little Bird.

Why can't I buy an ammo supply pallet in WARDOGS?

Season 02 locked it. The Ammo Supply Pallet now unlocks at WARDOG level 9 for $25,000; in Season 01 it was available from the start. Until you unlock it, ask a logistics player to deliver ammo to your FOB, since a Talon needs 200 ammo supplies for every restock.
