Valheim Comfort & Rested Buff: Max Comfort Guide

Comfort sets how long Valheim's Rested buff lasts: 7 minutes plus one per level. This guide lists every comfort group, the 22-point max build and the seasonal pieces that reach 24.

Adapted from Ashlands Maximum Comfort Level 19 - Itemised Breakdown for Valheim

🎯 The core idea

Comfort decides how long your Rested buff lasts: 7 minutes plus 1 minute per comfort level. Only the best item in each comfort group counts, so max comfort is about covering every group once inside a 10 m radius, not filling a room with furniture. The wiki's current Comfort page puts the normal cap at 22 (29 minutes) and 24 (31 minutes) with the Maypole and Yule Tree.

  • free costs nothing
  • cheap small cost
  • setup needs preparation
  • grind pays off slowly
  • skip the thing to stop doing

What the Rested buff actually does

free Rested is the rest bonus you get after sitting by a fire or standing under a roof near one. The wiki lists four effects:

EffectBonus
Health regeneration+50%
Stamina regeneration+100%
Eitr regeneration+100%
Skill experience+50%

The video names the first three and skips Eitr. The XP bonus isn't in the in-game tooltip, and comfort doesn't change its size. Comfort only changes how long the buff lasts. Taylor_MB's argument is simple: double stamina regen is what lets you dodge your way through your first Troll, Fulings in the Plains and Seekers in the Mistlands. Fighting without Rested is a self-inflicted handicap. The wiki adds that it hurts even more when you're Wet as well, which in the Swamp is all the time. Rested is also removed when you log out, so top it up at the start of every session.

Rested time formula and how to trigger it

free The Valheim rested time formula on the wiki is Rested duration = 7 minutes + comfort level. The frame above shows it: a lit fire under a roof is comfort 3, and the timer reads just over 10 minutes.

Comfort levelRested time
1 (lit fire, no roof)8 min
3 (fire + shelter)10 min
714 min
1219 min
1724 min
19 (video's Ashlands max)26 min
22 (wiki's current normal max)29 min
24 (with Maypole and Yule Tree)31 min

To get the buff you first need the Resting effect. You get it when no hostile creatures are nearby and you are either sitting near a fire, or you have the Fire and Shelter effects at the same time. You can't rest while Wet, except when you're sitting in a heated hot tub. Shelter means a roof with at least 80% cover. Stay in Resting for 20 uninterrupted seconds and Rested kicks in. The comfort number is printed on the Resting icon, so watch it as you place furniture.

A wiki tip that pays off all game: build a campfire (5 Stone, 2 Wood) just inside a dungeon entrance. That gives you comfort 3 and a 10-minute buff before you go into a Burial Chamber.

How comfort groups work

skip Stop placing five benches. This is the rule behind every comfort level in Valheim: items in the same group don't stack, and only the highest-value item in each group counts. Some items have no group. They stack with other ungrouped items, but no item ever stacks with a copy of itself.

Taylor_MB's comfort shack shows this well. Each wall sign shows a group and its value. Building a chair after the stools adds just +1, because the chair (2) replaces the bench (1) in the Chair group instead of adding to it. Once the chair is down you can delete the stools and the number doesn't move.

Two more rules from the wiki:

  • Range is 10 metres. Comfort items only count within 10 m of your character. Most items measure from their centre, but beds and the Hearth measure from the bottom, and the hanging brazier from the top.
  • Upgrades replace, not add. Thrones replace chairs, the Dragon bed replaces the basic bed, the Hearth replaces the campfire. Plan for the best piece in each group and skip the stepping stones once you can afford it.

Valheim comfort list: every group at a glance

This is the full comfort list from the wiki's Comfort page (last edited 8 October 2026). The page carries a note that it isn't fully updated for 1.0 / Deep North. Higher tiers in the same row replace lower ones.

Two conflicts inside the wiki: the separate Rugs page still lists every rug at +1, and the Lava lantern's info box says +1 while its own text says +2. The Comfort page totals only reach 22 with the +2 values, so this guide uses those. If your counter comes out one lower, check those two groups first.

Fire, the Hearth and shelter

cheap Fire is the start of every rest. A lit campfire, bonfire, iron fire pit or brazier gives +1 comfort, but they all share the Fire group. Ten braziers still only give +1. Fires only count while lit. Shelter adds +2 when you're under a roof near the fire.

The Hearth (15 Stone, built at a Stonecutter) is the top of the Fire group at +2. There's a catch the video doesn't mention. The wiki says the Hearth only gives its full 2 comfort when you're sheltered and within 8 m of it. Outside, or sheltered but further away, it drops to 1. Its Fire effect reaches about 12 m, but build your comfort corner close to it. It also needs solid support: stone floor, the ground or pillars. On an unsupported wood floor it breaks as soon as you place it.

Seating, tables and beds

setup These three groups are worth 7 comfort together, and they're the first big upgrades you'll get.

PieceMaterials (wiki)Comfort
Chair4 Finewood2
Darkwood chair4 Finewood, 1 Tar, 5 Iron nails, 1 Deer hide2
Stone throne20 Stone, 2 Deer hide, 2 Wolf pelt3
Raven throne20 Finewood, 10 Iron nails3
Round table10 Finewood, 2 Tar, 20 Iron nails2
Long heavy table20 Finewood, 2 Tar, 20 Iron nails2
Bed8 Wood1
Dragon bed40 Finewood, 7 Deer hide, 4 Wolf pelt, 10 Feathers, 15 Iron nails2

The Black marble and Bone thrones are also +3, so pick one for its looks rather than its comfort. The Raven throne is the earliest +3 because it only needs iron from the Swamp. In the video's shack, swapping the benches for chairs moves the counter up by only 1, because the chair replaces the bench. Thrones then take the whole Chair group to +3. Valheim 1.0 added a Carved Bench, Carved Chair, Antler Throne and two carved tables. The wiki's Comfort page doesn't list comfort values for them yet. The groups are capped, though, so they can't raise your maximum.

Rugs, banners and jute curtains

cheap The video calls this "the great rug nerf". A few weeks after the Mistlands update, all rugs were put in one group (the wiki's version history says "comfort from different carpets no longer stacks"). One rug is enough, and the wiki now makes the hide rugs (Bearskin, Wolf, Lox) the +2 tier. Straw counts as a rug too, so straw on the floor is a valid +1 early on.

Banners are a +1 group for any of the 11 coloured banners. Here the wiki corrects the video: Taylor_MB, recording in May 2024, says the red and blue jute curtains give no comfort. The current Comfort page lists the Red and Blue Jute Curtain as the +2 tier of the Banner group. The Red one costs 4 Red jute and 1 Finewood. Jute drapes still aren't listed. The Yule garland that the video says "isn't a banner" belongs to the separate Garland group. That group also holds the Flower Garland (2 Finewood, 1 Dandelion) and Fey Lights (2 Finewood, 1 Thistle), and the whole group gives +1. That matches the Valheim building tips guide: build whichever garland you like the look of.

Lanterns, pots, stands and the hot tub

setup These late-game groups are where the last comfort points come from:

  • Lanterns: Dvergr lantern +1 (2 Bronze, 1 Surtling core, 1 Crystal). The Lava lantern is +2 per the Comfort page (1 Flametal, 1 Proustite powder, 1 Sulfur, at a Workbench, no fuel needed). The Jack-O-Turnip is in this group too, so it can't stack with a lava lantern.
  • Pot / Asksvin skeleton: +1 for any pot (Pot shards plus 1 Charcoal resin, no station needed) or the Asksvin skeleton. One is enough.
  • Stands: any Armor stand (8 Finewood, 4 Iron nails, 2 Leather scraps) or Item stand gives +1, and nothing has to hang on it.
  • Barber station / Hot tub: The barber station gives +1. It needs 10 Finewood, a Barber kit, 5 Bronze nails and 5 Troll hide, and you can build it once you've found Hildir. The Valheim hot tub (20 Wood, 6 Tar, 10 Iron, 8 Stone) gives +2, so it's the one to build. It only counts when it's fueled with wood. In the frame above, the hot tub and Hearth are what take the shack to comfort 17 and a 24-minute timer.

Hot tub warning from the wiki: a heated tub in the Ashlands works like Ashlands water and will eventually kill you if you sit in it too long. Anywhere else it's safe indefinitely.

Seasonal comfort: Maypole, Yule Tree and Jack-O-Turnip

free Two seasonal items have no group, so each adds +1 on top of a full build:

  • Valheim Maypole: 10 Wood, 4 Dandelion, 4 Thistle. You can build it during the midsummer event (1 June to 6 July). The wiki also says a few spawn at world generation in the middle of abandoned Meadows villages. They never respawn once destroyed, so if your seed has one, build your house around it or leave it standing. The video adds that some seeds have none at all.
  • Yule Tree: 10 Wood and 1 Fir cone, buildable over Yule (1 December to 6 January). The wiki notes it can also be built if you set your system date to 25 December. Unlike the Maypole, it never spawns in the world.
  • Jack-O-Turnip: 4 Turnip, 2 Resin, buildable 1 October to 6 November. It's +2, but it shares the Lantern group with the Lava lantern, so it can't raise you past 22. It's still a good early pick, because +2 from turnips beats waiting for the Ashlands. It's in season right now (20 October), so build one before 6 November.

Seasonal pieces stay after the event ends, but once destroyed they can't be rebuilt until the next event. Don't hammer-remove them by accident.

Building out of season with devcommands

skip This is a cheat, not a strategy. The video shows how to build the Maypole and Yule Tree out of season. Add -console to Valheim's Steam launch options, press F5 in game, then type devcommands, then debugmode. Press B to toggle no-placement-cost mode, which also unlocks recipes you haven't found yet. Taylor_MB warns that this shows building pieces from later biomes, so it can spoil progression. On a shared server, ask your group first. If you'd rather not touch the console, the system-date trick is the only other way to get the Yule Tree out of season.

Designing a compact comfort room

setup How to increase comfort without wasting space: fit one piece from each group into a single room built around the Hearth.

  • Put the Hearth in the middle, on stone or the ground. You need to be within 8 m of it for the full +2, and every other piece must be within 10 m of where you stand.
  • Put the throne next to the Hearth and sit on it. Sitting there puts the fire, bed, table, rug and banner all in range at once.
  • Hot tub in a corner or a side alcove. It burns wood and makes smoke, so give its chimney an opening.
  • Small groups (lantern, pot, stand, garland) can go on walls and shelves. They count wherever they are within range.
  • Seasonal pieces can go in a pit under the floor or a room next door, as long as they're within 10 m. The building tips guide shows the "hide it under the house" trick.

For roof angles, materials and stability so the comfort room survives a raid, see the Valheim building tips guide.

What changed since the Ashlands video

The source video was uploaded on 15 May 2024, right after the Ashlands update. It ends at comfort 19 and a 26-minute buff. That was the max back then. Valheim has had the Bog Witch update, the 0.221 updates and the 1.0 / Deep North launch (9 September 2026) since, and the live patch is 1.0.20. The wiki's current Comfort page differs from the video on these points:

  • Max is 22, not 17 without seasonals. The wiki puts the normal max at 22 (24 with seasonals), not the 17 (19) the video reaches.
  • Rugs: the hide rugs are now listed at +2, and the Bearskin rug (Bog Witch) is new.
  • Banners: Red and Blue Jute Curtains now give +2 in the Banner group. The video says they give nothing.
  • New groups: Garland (+1), Pot/Asksvin skeleton (+1) and Barber station/Hot tub are all on the wiki, and Flower Garland and Fey Lights came in patch 0.221.10.
  • Lanterns: The Lava lantern is +2 on the Comfort page, where the video's counter showed +1. The Dvergr lantern, which the video doesn't count, is +1.

Everything the video shows about grouping, replacement and shelter still matches the wiki. The formula still matches too: the on-screen timers of 10, 14, 24 and 26 minutes fit 7 + comfort exactly.

How this guide was fact-checked

  • Source video: Taylor_MB, "Ashlands Maximum Comfort Level 19 - Itemised Breakdown for Valheim", uploaded 15 May 2024 (pre-1.0). All images are frames from it. The grouping demo, the replacement order and the comfort/timer pairs (3 = 10 min, 7 = 14, 17 = 24, 19 = 26) are taken from what the video shows on screen.
  • Valheim wiki (Fandom): Comfort (edited 8 October 2026, flagged as not fully updated for 1.0), Rested, Resting, Shelter, Hearth, Hot tub, Chairs, Tables, Rugs, Dragon bed, Bed, Red jute curtain, Barber station, Pots, Asksvin skeleton, Lava lantern, Dvergr lantern, Armor stand, Flower Garland, Fey Lights, Maypole, Yule tree, Jack-O-Turnip, Seasonal events and Version history (up to 1.0.20). Seasonal dates match our existing building guide.
  • Corrections to the video: max comfort is 22 / 24, not 17 / 19. Jute curtains do give comfort (+2, Banner group). Hide rugs are +2. Lava lantern is +2, not +1. Rested also doubles Eitr regen, which the video leaves out.
  • Unresolved wiki conflicts: the Rugs page (every rug +1) and the Lava lantern info box (+1) disagree with the Comfort page. Comfort values for the 1.0 Antler Throne, carved furniture, Sealskin Rug, Hooded Lantern and Snow Lantern aren't on the wiki yet. The Comfort page only names the Moose Hide Carpet, in the +2 rug tier.

What this guide doesn't answer

  • Comfort values for every 1.0 Deep North furniture piece. The wiki doesn't have them yet, and we won't guess.
  • Food, health and stamina numbers. Rested multiplies regen, but your food sets the pool. See the Valheim food guide.
  • Sleeping and skipping the night. Beds count for comfort here, but sleep mechanics are a separate topic.
  • Modded comfort. Mods that change comfort values or the Rested timer aren't covered. This guide is vanilla only.
  • Full building and stability rules. Covered in the building tips guide linked above.

Frequently asked

What is the max comfort level in Valheim?

The wiki's current Comfort page puts the normal maximum at 22 comfort, which gives a 29-minute Rested buff. Adding the seasonal Maypole and Yule Tree, which belong to no group, raises it to 24 comfort and 31 minutes. Older Ashlands-era videos show 19, because jute curtains, hide rugs, garlands, pots and the lava lantern have been revalued or added since.

How long does the Rested buff last in Valheim?

Rested lasts 7 minutes plus 1 minute per comfort level. A lit fire on its own (comfort 1) gives 8 minutes, a campfire under a roof (comfort 3) gives 10, the 22-comfort max build gives 29, and 24 comfort with seasonal items gives 31 minutes. You get it after 20 uninterrupted seconds of the Resting effect.

How do I increase comfort in Valheim?

Cover every comfort group once instead of placing duplicates, because only the best item in each group counts. Get a roof (+2), a Hearth (+2), a throne (+3), a Dragon bed, a Round or Long heavy table, a hide rug, a jute curtain, a lava lantern and a heated hot tub (+2 each), plus a garland, a pot and a stand (+1 each). Keep everything within 10 m of where you sit.

Do multiple rugs or banners stack for comfort?

No. All rugs share one comfort group and all banners share another, so only the highest-value one in range counts. Hide rugs such as the Bearskin, Wolf or Lox rug are listed at +2 on the wiki's Comfort page, and the Red or Blue Jute Curtain is the +2 tier of the Banner group. Extra copies add nothing.

Does the hot tub give comfort in Valheim?

Yes, a hot tub gives +2 comfort, but only while it is fueled with wood. It shares a group with the Barber station (+1), so you only need the tub. It costs 20 Wood, 6 Tar, 10 Iron and 8 Stone. You can rest in it even though it makes you Wet, but in the Ashlands a heated tub will eventually kill you.
