🎯 The core idea
Food is where most of your health, stamina and eitr comes from in Valheim, so treat your three food slots like gear. In every biome, eat two health foods and one stamina food from that biome's best easy-to-farm recipes. In the Mistlands and later, mages swap in eitr foods. The tables below give the wiki's numbers for each pick, from Raspberries in the Meadows to Oatmeal in the Deep North.
- free costs nothing
- cheap small cost
- setup needs preparation
- grind pays off slowly
- skip the thing to stop doing
This Valheim food guide follows ShySloth's 1.0 video, which picks three foods per biome. The video favors a health-heavy setup: two health foods and one stamina food. Every number below was checked against the Food page on the Valheim Fandom wiki. Where the wiki has a better option than the video's pick, it's listed next to the video's choice. For the order you'll visit these biomes in, see the Valheim progression guide.
How food works in Valheim 1.0
free You can have three different foods active at once. Each one raises your max health, max stamina and, from the Mistlands on, max eitr. Each also adds health regeneration (the "hp/tick" on the tooltip). You can't starve, but with no food you're stuck at your base health and stamina. You can't eat the same food again until its icon starts flashing, and eating it again then resets its timer and bonus.
Food also fades over time. According to the wiki, a food at half its duration still gives about 81% of its bonus, and with 10% of its time left it gives about 50%. Eat again when the icons flash, not when they run out.
The fork on each food's inventory icon shows what the food is for. Red is a health food, yellow is a stamina food, blue is an eitr food, and white means balanced. Most cooked meals come from the Cauldron, and you unlock new cauldron recipes by building upgrades next to it. The wiki lists six levels: Spice rack, Butcher's table, Pots and pans, Mortar and pestle, then Rolling pins and cutting boards. Pies, bread and other baked meals use the Food preparation table and the Stone oven instead. Holding Shift at the Cauldron cooks 5 at a time.
Which slots to fill is up to you. The wiki says more health matters most if you block with a shield, since it also raises how much you can take before you're staggered. Dodge-focused players should eat for stamina. Mages need eitr.
Best early food: the Meadows
free The best early food costs nothing. Pick Raspberries and look for beehives, then cook Neck tails on a campfire. The video recommends breaking wild beehives with a bow from a distance, then picking up the Queen bee so you can build your own Beehive at home.
| Food | Health | Stamina | Healing | Duration | How to get it |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Grilled neck tail | 25 | 8 | 2 hp/tick | 20 min | Neck tail, Cooking station |
| Raspberries | 7 | 20 | 1 hp/tick | 10 min | Picked in the Meadows |
| Honey | 8 | 35 | 1 hp/tick | 15 min | Beehive |
| Cooked deer meat (wiki alternative) | 35 | 12 | 2 hp/tick | 20 min | Deer meat, Cooking station |
The video's Meadows meal is Grilled neck tail, Raspberries and Honey. If you've killed a few Deer, the wiki's numbers make Cooked deer meat the better health slot (35 health against 25). Keep the Mushrooms you find for Black Forest recipes. Don't destroy berry bushes: the wiki says they can't be replanted.
Black Forest food: carrots change everything
setup The Black Forest is where farming starts. Carrot seeds only grow wild here and are easy to miss, so look for small white flowers. Planting them needs a Cultivator, which needs Bronze, and you can mine everything for Bronze in this biome. Once your carrot field is growing, these are the three foods the video recommends:
| Food | Health | Stamina | Healing | Duration | Recipe |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minced meat sauce | 40 | 13 | 3 hp/tick | 25 min | Boar meat, Neck tail, Carrot (Cauldron 1) |
| Boar jerky (makes 2) | 23 | 23 | 2 hp/tick | 30 min | Boar meat, Honey (Cauldron 1) |
| Carrot soup | 15 | 45 | 2 hp/tick | 25 min | Mushroom, 3 Carrot (Cauldron 1) |
| Deer stew (wiki alternative) | 45 | 15 | 3 hp/tick | 25 min | Blueberries, Carrot, Cooked deer meat (Cauldron 1) |
| Queen's jam (makes 4) | 14 | 40 | 2 hp/tick | 20 min | 8 Raspberries, 6 Blueberries (Cauldron 1) |
Boar jerky gives balanced health and stamina, and it lasts 30 minutes. That makes it a good food to take exploring. For health, the wiki has Deer stew a little ahead of Minced meat sauce (45 against 40). Use whichever meat you have more of.
Swamp food: sausages and turnips
grind Sausages are the big health food in the Swamp. One Cauldron batch makes 4, but each batch needs 4 Entrails from Draugr, and that is the slow part. Turnip seeds come from turnip flowers in the Swamp. Find one and start a turnip field as soon as you can.
| Food | Health | Stamina | Healing | Duration | Recipe |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sausages (makes 4) | 55 | 18 | 3 hp/tick | 25 min | 4 Entrails, Boar meat, Thistle (Cauldron 2) |
| Black soup | 50 | 17 | 3 hp/tick | 20 min | Bloodbag, Honey, Turnip (Cauldron 2) |
| Turnip stew | 18 | 55 | 2 hp/tick | 25 min | Boar meat, 3 Turnip (Cauldron 2) |
| Serpent stew (wiki alternative) | 80 | 26 | 4 hp/tick | 30 min | Mushroom, Cooked serpent meat, 2 Honey (Cauldron 2) |
The video eats Sausages, Black soup and Turnip stew. If you kill a Serpent at sea, the wiki's Serpent stew gives 80 health, which is more than any other food until the Plains. Cooking Serpent meat needs the Iron cooking station.
Mountain food: wolves and Eyescream
cheap Stay warm before you worry about food. Drink Frost resistance mead until you have the Silver for a Wolf fur cape. Wolves then become your main source of meat.
| Food | Health | Stamina | Healing | Duration | Recipe |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wolf skewer | 65 | 21 | 3 hp/tick | 25 min | Wolf meat, 2 Mushroom, Onion (Cauldron 3) |
| Wolf jerky (makes 2) | 33 | 33 | 3 hp/tick | 30 min | Wolf meat, Honey (Cauldron 3) |
| Sausages | 55 | 18 | 3 hp/tick | 25 min | Carried over from the Swamp |
| Eyescream | 21 | 65 | 1 hp/tick | 25 min | 3 Greydwarf eye, Freeze gland (Cauldron 3) |
| Onion soup | 20 | 60 | 1 hp/tick | 20 min | 3 Onion (Cauldron 2) |
The video's Mountain meal is Wolf jerky, Sausages and Eyescream. It switches to Wolf skewers once it finds Onions. For stamina, Eyescream (65) beats Onion soup (60), the same conclusion as our Moder boss guide. The video says getting Onions is down to luck. The wiki is more specific: Onion seeds come from Mountain towers and abandoned cabins, and they don't respawn once picked.
Plains food: fish wraps and bread
setup The best Plains health food needs fish, so this is the point to find Haldor, the trader, and buy a Fishing rod and bait. He's in the Black Forest. The wiki gives 10 possible spawn points, all at least 1,500 m from the world center. His bag icon shows up on your map at 320 to 453 m, about twice the default minimap range. The video says about three times the map reveal radius. Barley comes from Fuling farms, and it only grows in the Plains, so you'll need a small farming base there.
| Food | Health | Stamina | Healing | Duration | Recipe |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fish wraps | 70 | 23 | 4 hp/tick | 25 min | 2 Cooked fish, 4 Barley flour (Cauldron 4) |
| Wolf skewer | 65 | 21 | 3 hp/tick | 25 min | Carried over from the Mountains |
| Bread (makes 2) | 23 | 70 | 2 hp/tick | 25 min | Bread dough, Stone oven |
| Lox meat pie (wiki alternative) | 75 | 24 | 4 hp/tick | 30 min | 4 Barley flour, 2 Cloudberries, 2 Lox meat, Stone oven |
| Blood pudding (wiki alternative) | 25 | 75 | 2 hp/tick | 30 min | 2 Thistle, 2 Bloodbag, 4 Barley flour (Cauldron 4) |
The video eats Fish wraps, Bread and Wolf skewers. Fish wraps keep being useful well into the Mistlands. The wiki rates Lox meat pie above Fish wraps for health and Blood pudding above Bread for stamina. Both also last 30 minutes, so they're worth making if you have Lox or spare Bloodbags.
Mistlands health and stamina food
setup In the Mistlands you're farming again. Jotun puffs are planted whole rather than from seeds, and each planting gives three. The wiki says they only grow in Mistlands soil, so you'll need an outpost there. Salad also needs Onions and Cloudberries.
| Food | Health | Stamina | Healing | Duration | Recipe |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Honey glazed chicken | 80 | 26 | 5 hp/tick | 30 min | Chicken meat, 3 Honey, 2 Jotun puffs, Stone oven |
| Fish wraps | 70 | 23 | 4 hp/tick | 25 min | Carried over from the Plains |
| Salad (makes 3) | 26 | 80 | 3 hp/tick | 25 min | 3 Jotun puffs, 3 Onion, 3 Cloudberries (Cauldron 5) |
| Misthare supreme (wiki alternative) | 85 | 28 | 5 hp/tick | 25 min | Hare meat, 3 Jotun puffs, 2 Carrot, Stone oven |
| Fish 'n' bread (wiki alternative) | 30 | 90 | 3 hp/tick | 30 min | Anglerfish, 2 Bread dough, Stone oven |
Honey glazed chicken needs chickens. Wild eggs are sometimes found in Plains towers. The usual way is to buy them from Haldor: the wiki lists Eggs at 1,500 coins once you've beaten Yagluth. You need two to start breeding chickens. For a few more points, the wiki puts Misthare supreme (85 health) and Fish 'n' bread (90 stamina) at the top of this biome.
Mistlands eitr food for mages
grind The eitr bar first appears in the Mistlands, and eitr foods are what fill it. Infested mines are the best place to get mage food. They're full of Seekers and Royal jelly. Plant Magecaps, the glowing blue mushrooms on Mistlands cliffs, at your Mistlands farm.
| Food | Health | Stamina | Eitr | Healing | Duration | Recipe |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Seeker aspic (makes 2) | 28 | 14 | 85 | 3 hp/tick | 30 min | 2 Seeker meat, 2 Magecap, 2 Royal jelly (Cauldron 5) |
| Yggdrasil porridge | 27 | 13 | 80 | 3 hp/tick | 25 min | 4 Sap, 3 Barley, 2 Royal jelly (Cauldron 5) |
| Stuffed mushroom | 25 | 12 | 75 | 3 hp/tick | 25 min | 3 Magecap, Blood clot, 2 Turnip, Stone oven |
| Mushroom omelette | 28 | 85 | — | 3 hp/tick | 25 min | 3 Egg, 3 Jotun puffs (Cauldron 5) |
The video's mage meal is Seeker aspic, Stuffed mushroom and Mushroom omelette. On Stuffed mushroom, the video's on-screen card says 28 health, 14 stamina and 85 eitr. Those are Seeker aspic's numbers. The wiki gives Stuffed mushroom 25 health, 12 stamina and 75 eitr. Blood clots come from Ticks, which usually find you first, often near giant skeletal remains.
Ashlands health and stamina food
setup Ashlands fights get out of hand quickly, so eat as much health as you can. Vineberry seeds grow in most biomes, the Meadows included, as long as the Ashvine has something to climb. The video suggests taming a few Asksvin at home so you don't need to hunt in the Ashlands every time you want Asksvin tails.
| Food | Health | Stamina | Healing | Duration | Recipe |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Piquant pie | 105 | 35 | 6 hp/tick | 30 min | 2 Asksvin tail, 2 Vineberry cluster, 4 Barley flour, Stone oven |
| Fiery svinstew | 95 | 32 | 6 hp/tick | 25 min | Asksvin tail, 2 Vineberry cluster, Smoke puff (Cauldron 5) |
| Scorching medley (makes 3) | 32 | 95 | 4 hp/tick | 25 min | 3 Jotun puffs, 3 Onion, 3 Fiddlehead (Cauldron 6) |
| Mashed meat (wiki alternative) | 100 | 34 | 6 hp/tick | 25 min | Asksvin tail, Volture meat, Fiddlehead (Cauldron 6) |
| Roasted crust pie (wiki alternative) | 34 | 100 | 4 hp/tick | 30 min | Volture egg, 2 Vineberry cluster, 4 Barley flour, Stone oven |
You can't farm Smoke puffs or Fiddleheads, so gather them whenever you see them. The video says Smoke puffs respawn after about 5 hours. The wiki says 4 hours for Smoke puffs and 5 hours for Fiddleheads. If you have a Volture egg, Roasted crust pie gives 5 more stamina than Scorching medley and lasts 5 minutes longer.
Ashlands eitr food
grind Ashlands mage food needs Sap from the Ancient roots in the Mistlands, plus Fiddleheads and Smoke puffs you've gathered on the way.
| Food | Health | Stamina | Eitr | Healing | Duration | Recipe |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Marinated greens | 32 | 16 | 95 | 4 hp/tick | 30 min | 3 Sap, 2 Magecap, 2 Fiddlehead, 2 Smoke puff (Cauldron 6) |
| Sparkling shroomshake | 30 | 15 | 90 | 4 hp/tick | 25 min | 4 Sap, 2 Magecap, 2 Vineberry cluster, 2 Smoke puff (Cauldron 6) |
| Sizzling berry broth | 28 | 14 | 85 | 4 hp/tick | 25 min | 3 Sap, 2 Vineberry cluster, 2 Fiddlehead (Cauldron 5) |
| Scorching medley | 32 | 95 | — | 4 hp/tick | 25 min | Stamina slot for mages too |
The video recommends Marinated greens, Sizzling berry broth and Scorching medley. It calls Sizzling berry broth the second-highest eitr food here, but the wiki disagrees: Sparkling shroomshake (90) is second, and Sizzling berry broth (85) is third. The broth is still easier to make, because it needs no Magecaps or Smoke puffs.
Deep North crops: kale, oats and Poteitr
setup The Deep North adds three new crops: Kale, Oats and Poteitr. Wild Kale grows across the biome. In the video, Oat and Poteitr seeds come from barrels in one house in an abandoned settlement, and you may need to check several settlements before you find it. All three grow at your home base. Lingonberries grow wild across the Deep North and can't be farmed in the video, so mark good patches on your map.
cheap Kale chips may be the easiest stamina food in the game. The video's card shows 12 Kale making 4, at 35 health and 105 stamina. The wiki doesn't have a Kale chips entry yet. The video suggests a quick early trip north for Kale seeds. You could then make these at home while you're still in earlier biomes.
The video makes the Smoker cauldron upgrade, which needs a petrified troll. You either kill a Gamma troll or find a dead one. The wiki doesn't yet have pages for Kale, Oats, Poteitr, Lingonberries or the Smoker, so this part comes from the video only.
Deep North food: health and stamina
setup Moose are common in the Deep North, and the wiki confirms they can be tamed. Once you breed them, Moose meat is a steady supply, and the only ingredient you still need to go out for is Lingonberries.
| Food | Health | Stamina | Healing | Duration | Recipe (wiki) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Meat in bread (makes 2) | 110 | 37 | 7 hp/tick | 30 min | Moose meat, 2 Kale, Oat flour, 2 Lingonberries |
| Seal meat soup | 110 | 37 | 7 hp/tick | 30 min | 2 Seal blubber, 2 Kale, 2 Ice |
| Smoked moose meat | 105 | 35 | 7 hp/tick | 25 min | Moose meat, 2 Kale |
| Kale chips (makes 4) | 35 | 105 | — | — | 12 Kale (video card; not on the wiki) |
| Pancakes (makes 3) | 39 | 115 | 5 hp/tick | 30 min | Oat milk, 2 Oat flour, 2 Egg, 2 Blueberries |
The video's health and stamina setup is Meat in bread, Smoked moose meat and Kale chips. The wiki and the video agree on the stats. For the recipe, the video's card shows 2 Moose meat for Meat in bread, while the wiki lists 1. The wiki also lists Seal meat soup at the same 110 health, and Pancakes at 115 stamina, which beats Kale chips. These Deep North foods are the best late game food in Valheim: Meat in bread and Seal meat soup are the highest single health foods on the wiki's list.
Deep North eitr food: Oatmeal and smoked fish
grind Deep North mages need fish. Fishing is slow, but you'll use the catch in several recipes.
| Food | Health | Stamina | Eitr | Healing | Duration | Recipe |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oatmeal | 39 | 115 | 85 | 5 hp/tick | 30 min | 2 Oats, 2 Lingonberries, Oat milk |
| Smoked fish | 30 | 16 | 95 | 5 hp/tick | 25 min | Raw fish, Kale, Poteitr |
| Meatballs and Poteitr (wiki alternative) | 35 | 18 | 105 | 5 hp/tick | 25 min | Moose meat, 2 Lingonberries, 2 Poteitr |
| Fish soup | ? | ? | ? | ? | ? | 3 Raw fish, 2 Kale, 2 Ice (video; not on the wiki) |
Oatmeal is the standout. It gives 115 stamina and 85 eitr in one slot, which no earlier food comes close to. In the video it's called an "oatmeal" recipe, but the on-screen card and the wiki both say the third ingredient is Oat milk. The video recommends Fish soup for even more eitr, but it doesn't show the numbers, and the wiki has no entry for it yet. The wiki's Meatballs and Poteitr gives 105 eitr without any fish. Ice is easy to get: break icebergs and ice sheets with a pickaxe.
Best food combos for each playstyle
free Plan your food for what you're about to do. Below are the strongest food combos the wiki's numbers support in each biome (two health foods and one stamina food), with mage combos from the Mistlands on.
| Biome | Health and stamina combo | Mage combo |
|---|---|---|
| Meadows | Cooked deer meat, Grilled neck tail, Honey | — |
| Black Forest | Deer stew, Minced meat sauce, Carrot soup | — |
| Swamp | Serpent stew or Sausages, Black soup, Turnip stew | — |
| Mountains | Wolf skewer, Sausages, Eyescream | — |
| Plains | Lox meat pie, Fish wraps, Blood pudding or Bread | — |
| Mistlands | Misthare supreme or Honey glazed chicken, Fish wraps, Salad or Fish 'n' bread | Seeker aspic, Yggdrasil porridge, Mushroom omelette |
| Ashlands | Piquant pie, Mashed meat, Scorching medley | Marinated greens, Sparkling shroomshake, Scorching medley |
| Deep North | Meat in bread, Smoked moose meat, Kale chips or Pancakes | Oatmeal, Smoked fish, Meatballs and Poteitr |
skip Don't eat three stamina foods for a boss. If you're going to take a hit, eat for health. Eat for stamina when you're exploring, building or running. Use eitr foods only if you actually fight with magic. If you want a food tier list, use the rule above: the best food is the highest-stat recipe in your current biome that you can keep making.
The Serving Tray and feasts. The wiki says the Bog Witch sells the Serving Tray for 140 coins. You use it to set food, meads or feasts down on the ground or on a table, where anyone can eat them. Feasts can only be eaten after they've been placed this way. Feasts come from the Food preparation table. Each one gives 10 servings, lasts 50 minutes and gives balanced stats (Plains pie picnic gives 55 health and 55 stamina, Ashlands gourmet bowl 75/75 plus 38 eitr). That makes them good for group play. The keyword notes for this guide say 1.0 reworked the Serving Tray menu, but the wiki's Serving Tray page was last edited before 1.0 and says nothing about that, so we can't confirm what changed.
How this guide was fact-checked
- Source: ShySloth's video "Most Efficient Foods for EVERY Biome", uploaded 2026-09-11, two days after Valheim 1.0 and the Deep North launched. The live patch is now 1.0.20.
- All food stats, durations, healing and recipes come from the Valheim Fandom wiki's Food page (last edited 2026-10-18) and the separate food pages. Cauldron levels come from the wiki's Cauldron page. Seed, Haldor, Egg and Jotun puff facts come from their wiki pages.
- Corrections to the video: Stuffed mushroom gives 25 health, 12 stamina and 75 eitr, not the 28/14/85 on the video's card. Sparkling shroomshake, not Sizzling berry broth, is the second-highest Ashlands eitr food. Smoke puffs respawn every 4 hours, not about 5. Haldor's icon shows up at 320 to 453 m, about twice the minimap range rather than three times. Oatmeal's third ingredient is Oat milk.
- Deep North: the wiki's Deep North table was still being filled in when this was written. Kale chips and Fish soup aren't on it, and there are no wiki pages for Kale, Oats, Poteitr, Lingonberries or the Smoker. Kale chips stats come from the video's on-screen card. Where to find seeds and the petrified-troll Smoker come from the video only. The wiki's Meat in bread recipe (1 Moose meat) doesn't match the video's card (2).
- Our own picks: the "wiki alternative" rows and the combo table are our suggestions based on the wiki's numbers. They aren't in the video.
What this guide doesn't answer
- Meads and potions: healing, stamina, eitr and resistance meads are a separate system from food, so they're left for their own guide.
- Comfort and the Rested buff: Rested affects stamina regeneration, not food stats, and it's covered in a separate comfort guide.
- Full farming layouts: this guide says which crops to grow, not how to set out or protect a farm.
- Every food in the game: raw ingredients and weaker foods that are better used in recipes (Yellow mushrooms, Cooked fish, Muckshake and others) aren't covered.
- Fish soup stats: neither the video nor the wiki shows them yet.
- Changes after patch 1.0.20: Deep North numbers may still change with later 1.0 patches.
