Valheim 1.0 Update: Everything New and Changed

Everything the Valheim 1.0 update added and changed, from the Deep North and Kall to pocket upgrades, the Forge of Potential and older-biome rebalances, plus what patches 1.0.10 to 1.0.20 fixed and whether you need a new world.

Adapted from So...Valheim 1.0 Changed EVERYTHING

🎯 The core idea

The Valheim 1.0 update (released 9 September 2026) adds the Deep North biome, the final boss Kall Fimbulbringer and three new gear lines. It also changes the older biomes: bigger inventories, a forge that pushes gear past its normal max level, alternate biome variants, a new Swamp creature, longer-lasting Mistlands and Ashlands gear, and a rebuilt hammer menu. Live patch is 1.0.20.

  • free costs nothing
  • cheap small cost
  • setup needs preparation
  • grind pays off slowly
  • skip the thing to stop doing

This page is the overview: what the Valheim 1.0 patch notes actually contain, what changed in the biomes you already know, which 1.0.x patches have changed things since launch, and whether you need a new world. For the deep dives, follow the links to the Deep North guide, the Deep North gear guide and the Kall boss guide.

Sources: SnazzyGames' launch-day video (played on a review build before release) and Xaine's World's video on everything outside the Deep North. Where Iron Gate's official Steam patch notes or the Fandom wiki disagree with either video, they win, and the text below says so.

Valheim 1.0 release at a glance

free Valheim's full release came out of Early Access on 9 September 2026. If you already own the game, 1.0 is a normal free update. Iron Gate's FAQ puts the new price at $29.99, keeps the 1 to 10 player limit, and adds crossplay between all platforms (PC, Mac, Linux, Xbox, PlayStation 5 and Switch 2).

The headline counts from the official 1.0 notes:

WhatCount in the 1.0 notes
New biome1 (Deep North), plus 2 new dungeon types
New weapons40+ (12 Nord, 12 Frostfire, 12 Thunderblood, 4 staffs, plus shields)
New armour sets4 (Protector, Vanguard, Caller, Lox Fur)
Capes / trinkets2 / 2
New creatures10+, plus the boss Kall Fimbulbringer
Build pieces80+
Food items20+
New systemsUpgradeable pockets, achievements, Forge of Potential idols, alternate biomes, Jotun events, cinematics

The FAQ also states plainly that 1.0 brings no Ocean changes and no official mod support.

The Deep North biome in brief

setup The Deep North is the snowy band at the far north of the map. Unlike the Ashlands, you don't need a special ship to reach it. The SnazzyGames video points out that a raft would do, but the biome freezes you like the Mountains, so bring frost resistance (most late-game capes have it). Ice sheets float off the coast, and deep snow covers the ground. Snow doesn't slow you down, but you have to clear it before you can build, which is what the new Snow Shovel is for.

New creatures, using the official names (the video's auto-captions mangle several):

CreatureWhereWhy you care
Seal, Baby SealCoastSeal pelt and blubber (babies drop nothing, per the video)
Moose, Moose CalfOverworldTameable and rideable with the Moose Saddle; hide, meat, sinew
BarkaForestsFrozen Branch; 2,200 HP per the wiki
GammeltrollOverworld above altitude 10Petrifies on death; break it with Ember Charges for Petrified Tissue, smelted into Bloodgold
Elaking, Eyeless OneWinding TunnelsHair bundles, Long Claws, Intricate key moulds
Hexen, Krigen, Hexahedric/Shapeless/Tiny PulpMörkhallaNornathread, armour moulds, Dead Pulp
Fallen WarriorMemorial sitesFrostfire and Thunderblood essence

The wiki lists the Gammeltroll at 3,000 HP. It is immune to fire, spirit and chop and resists frost, so frost and fire weapons do little to it. The Deep North guide covers the route, the dungeons and the bases.

New Deep North gear lines and stations

grind The Deep North doesn't use the usual "find the metal, unlock the recipe" loop. You collect moulds: weapon moulds from debris in the Winding Tunnels, and armour moulds from the Jotun warriors in Mörkhalla. You turn a mould into a cast at the Black Forge or Galdr Table, then fill the cast at the new Frost Foundry using Liquid Frost from the Frigid Kiln. Both stations need Frostcores from the Winding Tunnels.

Gear lineWhat it is
Nord (12 weapons)Base Bloodgold line: sword, greatsword, atgeir, mace, sledge, axe, greataxe, spear, dagger, knucklechains, bow, crossbow
Frostfire (12)Nord upgrade that adds fire and frost damage
Thunderblood (12)Nord upgrade with bonus damage at low health and a chance to deal lightning damage (per the video)
StaffsEcho Spike, Spirit Caller, Northern Vengeance, Lightning Strike
ShieldsNord Buckler, Nord Shield, Nord Greatshield
ArmourProtector (heavy), Vanguard (medium), Caller (magic)
ExtrasMoose Hide Cape, Cape of the Caller, Neckstabber and Witch Crown trinkets, Bloodgold arrows, bolts, missiles and payload

There are also three new station extensions: the Smith's Aprons (Black Forge), the Standing Loom (Galdr Table) and the Smoker (Cauldron). The video calls armour moulds a "3% drop". Patch 1.0.15 raised that: both Jotun warrior types now drop both medium and heavy armour moulds. Recipes and stats are in the Deep North gear guide.

Jotun events and Kall Fimbulbringer

setup 1.0 adds a new kind of world event. At the bottom of a Mörkhalla dungeon you break Malicious Ice. According to the video, that triggers a Jotun invasion somewhere else in the world: a frozen zone where Krigen, Hexen and Elakings fight whatever lives there, and it stays active until you get to its centre and destroy the ice. Each cleared event gives Malicious Blood. You need three to summon Kall Fimbulbringer, the final boss. The official notes name the two events "The Jotun have found you" and "They emerge from below…".

The memorial sites are the other new loop. The video shows you offering 3 Memorial Coal to summon a Fallen Warrior, which can drop the essence for Frostfire or Thunderblood upgrades. The fight itself (three phases, arena, loadout) is in the Kall boss guide. Patch 1.0.16 fixed adds that could spawn outside the boss arena.

New valuables you can sell to traders

free Mörkhalla adds four new gems and the Ancient Coin. The official notes name them Solryth, Grimvarn, Veydris and Draumyx. Like Amber or Rubies, their only use is selling them to a trader for coins.

ValuableSell priceSource of the number
Veydris135In-game tooltip in the video (stack of 20 = 2,700)
Draumyx175Spoken in the video only
Solryth95Spoken in the video only
Grimvarn55Spoken in the video only
Ancient Coin10Spoken in the video only

The wiki's Valuables table doesn't list the 1.0 gems yet. The captions garble two of the names ("Soul Wisp", "Dromex"), so treat every price except Veydris as unconfirmed. In the frame above the gem is marked "summoned through cheating means", which shows the reviewer spawned it in. Don't read the tooltip as a drop rate.

Forge of Potential and idols

grind This is the biggest change for players who never go north. Idols turn up around the world, and you take them to the Forge of Potential, a unique Mountain station that can raise gear one quality level, including past the item's normal maximum. The wiki gives these details:

  • One forge per world. World generation reserves up to ten possible Mountain sites at least 400 m apart, and the first one a player loads becomes the forge. A map marker appears when you get close.
  • Sixteen idols: Battle and Protection versions in eight tiers (Wooden, Bronze, Iron, Silver, Black Metal, Black Marble, Flametal, Bloodgold). Each item's recipe decides which idol it needs.
  • Every attempt is 65% success / 35% failure. A failure destroys the item and gives back only some of its materials. The idol and the upgrade materials are spent either way.
  • Example from the wiki: Shield of Roots from quality 3 to 4 costs 20 Finewood, 8 Writhan Roots and an Iron Protection Idol.

The video says the forge goes "beyond the standard max of four". That is only true for items whose normal cap is 4. The forge works from each item's own cap (the Shield of Roots stops at 3, for example). Patches 1.0.12 and 1.0.20 fixed a recipe-unlock bug and an exploit at the forge, so videos showing either are out of date.

Wider and Deeper Pockets: bigger inventory

cheap Haldor now sells two permanent inventory upgrades. Each one adds a full row:

UpgradeCost (wiki)Unlocks after
Wider Pockets1,000 coinsDefeating Moder
Deeper Pockets2,000 coinsDefeating The Queen

Of everything in 1.0 that works in old worlds, this is the best deal: 3,000 coins for two extra rows, kept for good on that character.

The Writhan and what its roots unlock

setup The only new creature before the Deep North is the Writhan, in the Swamp. The SnazzyGames captions call it "the ridden". The wiki gives it 400 HP at 0 stars. Its bite does 40 pierce and 30 poison, it is weak to slash, and it is immune to poison. When it dies it explodes: 6 m radius, 60 blunt plus poison, chop and pickaxe damage, enough to hurt your buildings. The blast can be dodged but not blocked.

According to the wiki, it spawns 2,000 to 8,000 m from the world centre, always drops Writhan Roots, and drops its trophy 10% of the time. Patch 1.0.15 increased its spawn rate and areas. The roots go into:

  • Shield of Roots: round shield, no movement speed penalty, -10% attack stamina (wiki). Pick its style before you craft it.
  • Lox Fur set (Plains): hood, jacket, trousers. The 3-piece bonus is Sneak +30, Bows +15 (wiki). Xaine notes it means giving up the Root Harnesk's pierce resistance.
  • Birds' Nest: makes feathers on its own (more on that in the last section).
  • Crown of Roots: a cosmetic the Bog Witch sells for 3,000 coins once you've killed a Writhan.

Grappling hook from Dvergr chests

setup The new Grappling Hook makes cliffs much easier to climb. Its key material, the Hook, comes from Dvergr treasure chests in the Mistlands' Infested Mines, the sealed rooms behind the glowing blue doors. The frame shows the "New material: Hook / New crafting recipe: Grappling Hook" pop-up right after looting one. The video says you'll want it in the Deep North to climb out of Mörkhalla after breaking Malicious Ice. The wiki has no page for the hook yet, so the recipe isn't included here. Patch 1.0.14 fixed errors with its secondary attack on creatures.

Alternate biomes at the map edges

free The far edges of the map can now generate alternate versions of earlier biomes. Examples from the video: a barren, rock-only Black Forest, patches packed with mushrooms or berries, and a Black Forest full of sleeping ghosts (shown above) that wake up when you get close. SnazzyGames counts over 30 variants from the Meadows to the Mistlands. The official notes only say they're found "at the outer edges", and the wiki has no page on them yet. They only generate in terrain you haven't explored yet (see the last section).

Building changes: 67° pieces, drawbridges, stacks

free Building gets its biggest update in years:

  • 67° pieces for Wood (beam, wall, inverted wall, roof cross), Ashwood, Thatch and Shingle roofs, plus 67° Log, Darkwood and Iron Wood beams. Steep roofs are possible from the Meadows onward.
  • Drawbridges: the Rustic Drawbridge (Mountain-tier according to Xaine) and the Timber Drawbridge from the Deep North. Patch 1.0.12 made it easier to fit a cart through the Timber one.
  • Stacks and piles for every metal bar plus flint and obsidian. They work as decoration and as compact storage.
  • New gates and fences (Roundpole Gate, Stone Fence), two placeable hoe boulders (1.0.14 made them persist and give support; 1.0.16 stopped rain damage), the Grausten Chest and the Wardrobe.
  • The hammer and serving tray menus were rebuilt with Categories, Materials, Recent and Favourites tabs and a search filter. An optional HUD window shows who built each piece.

The video says the Snow Lantern raises max comfort to 21. The wiki's comfort table puts both the Ashlands and the Deep North cap at 22 using the Lava Lantern, so don't count on the Snow Lantern for extra comfort. It also melts outside cold biomes.

Balance changes in the older biomes

free These changes reach your existing gear and worlds right away. Iron Gate didn't publish numbers for most of them, so none are made up here:

AreaChange in the 1.0 notes
Mistlands and Ashlands gearIncreased durability
MistWisp Light, Wisp Torch and Mistwalker clear mist over a longer range, and every Mistlands weapon now clears mist
Black Forest bears (Bjorn)Spawn less often and have less health (the wiki now lists 800 HP at 0 stars)
AshlandsLower chance of multiple enemies spawning together. The same notes also say the time between Charred spawns was reduced
Rare dropsPseudo-random logic so long dry streaks are less likely
FoodPulled Bear (Cauldron: 1 cooked bear meat, 1 blueberries, 2 carrots; 37 HP / 16 stamina for 30 min per the wiki)
OtherAll hair and beard styles in the character creator, a new chunked save format, a Draw Distance setting, and a Unity engine upgrade

The Mistlands guide and Ashlands guide are written for 1.0 and cover these in context.

1.0.x patches since launch, up to patch 1.0.20

free Iron Gate has shipped seven patches since launch. These are the ones that change what the launch videos show:

PatchDateWhat matters
1.0.1011 SepDeep North heavy armour can be repaired; Deep North Greydwarf Shamans' damage and healing fixed
1.0.12 (Steam first)11 SepFixed the Forge of Potential unlocking wrong recipes; fixed items on armour and item stands losing level and variant in worlds not yet loaded in 1.0; added an achievement opt-in for devcommand/mod users
1.0.1417 SepNew keybinds (alternate dodge, hotbar, radial), toggle-block option, skip-intro option; player-base effect of some pieces increased; Deep North battleaxes can chop every tree; ballista accepts the new trophies; Jotun Puffs and Magecaps no longer respawn
1.0.1518 SepTerrain duplication fixed; both Jotun warrior types drop medium and heavy armour moulds; more Writhans
1.0.1625 SepDeep North terrain edits no longer revert; fixed too many enemies spawning, especially in raids; several achievement fixes
1.0.176 OctFixed a rare bug that could erase all objects in parts of the world when a save chunk was split
1.0.2015 OctTrophy drop chance now goes up with a monster's star level; rare-drop luck no longer resets between sessions; Forge exploit fixed; wrongly applied "cheated" flags cleared from all items

The achievements (shown above) only count progress made after you install 1.0, so pre-1.0 boss kills don't count. Using most dev commands locks achievements for that character and world. The 1.0.20 cleanup removed the "cheated" flags a launch bug had put on legitimately earned items.

Valheim 1.0 new world or old world?

setup Iron Gate's official answer: your old world does get the new content, but "biome generation will only work properly on areas that have not yet been explored", and they recommend starting over anyway. In practice:

Works in your old worldNeeds unexplored terrain
Pockets, achievements, cinematics, all new build pieces and the hammer menuDeep North: northern terrain you explored before 1.0 keeps its old placeholder generation
Durability, mist, bear, Ashlands and drop-rate changesAlternate biomes: outer-edge only
Writhans (a creature spawn, so expect them in Swamps 2,000 to 8,000 m from centre)Forge of Potential: per the wiki, new fixed locations only generate in previously unexplored areas, and loaded terrain around your old routes counts as explored even if your map doesn't show it
Birds' Nest, Lox Fur, Shield of Roots, Pulled BearMörkhalla, Winding Tunnels, villages and memorial sites in the north

The Birds' Nest above is a good example of something that works right away in an old save. The wiki says it makes one feather about every 20 minutes, holds 4, and needs the Meadows, Black Forest or Plains with open sky. It costs 2 Writhan Roots, 3 Acorns and 5 Thistle.

skip If your old world has a fully explored north, don't expect a proper Deep North there. Start a fresh world, or at least sail to unexplored northern coast. Starting over? The beginner guide and world modifiers guide help you set it up. If you keep an old world, make a backup first, and make sure you're on 1.0.17 or later before converting a large save.

How this guide was fact-checked

  • Official sources first: Iron Gate's Steam announcements (the "Valheim 1.0 Has Arrived!" notes and the 1.0.10, 1.0.12, 1.0.14, 1.0.15, 1.0.16, 1.0.17 and 1.0.20 patch notes) and the official Valheim 1.0 FAQ on valheim.com. They provide every count, name and patch entry above.
  • Fandom wiki (checked 22 October 2026): Forge of Potential odds and idol tiers, Haldor pocket prices, Writhan stats and drops, Shield of Roots, Lox Fur set bonus, Birds' Nest, Gammeltroll, Bear, Pulled Bear, the comfort cap, and the Fader item now being called Kindled Ribs.
  • Video only: valuable prices other than Veydris, the alternate-biome examples and the 30+ variant count, the Jotun event walkthrough, the Memorial Coal offering, and the Rustic Drawbridge tier.
  • Corrections to the videos: caption names fixed (Writhan, Elaking, Gammeltroll, Nornathread, Mörkhalla, Solryth, Draumyx, Veydris). Mould drops were improved in 1.0.15, after the "3%" quoted from the review build. The Forge cap depends on the item, not a fixed level 4. The video's comfort cap of 21 conflicts with the wiki's 22. Writhans were made more common in 1.0.15, and trophy odds changed in 1.0.20.

What this guide doesn't answer

  • Exact Deep North recipes and stats: they're in the Deep North gear guide, to keep this page short.
  • Kall's attacks and phases: covered in the Kall boss guide.
  • A full list of alternate biomes: neither the official notes nor the wiki list them yet.
  • Exact durability and mist-range numbers: Iron Gate's notes give none, and the wiki hasn't documented them.
  • Mod compatibility: mods break with every major update and Iron Gate offers no official support, so check each mod's own page.

Frequently asked

What's new in the Valheim 1.0 update?

Valheim 1.0 (9 September 2026) adds the Deep North biome with the final boss Kall Fimbulbringer, 40+ weapons in the Nord, Frostfire and Thunderblood lines, four armour sets (Protector, Vanguard, Caller and Lox Fur), 10+ creatures, 80+ build pieces and 20+ foods. It also adds Haldor's pocket upgrades, achievements, the Forge of Potential with idols, alternate biomes at the map edges and Jotun invasion events.

Do I need a new world for Valheim 1.0?

Not strictly. Iron Gate says old worlds get the new content, but biome generation only works properly in areas you haven't explored yet, and they recommend starting over. Pockets, build pieces, balance changes and Writhans work in old saves. The Deep North, alternate biomes and the Forge of Potential need terrain that hasn't been generated yet, so explored northern areas stay as they were. Back up your world before converting it.

What changed in Valheim 1.0 for the older biomes?

Mistlands and Ashlands gear got more durability. Wisp Light, Wisp Torch and Mistwalker clear mist over a longer range, and every Mistlands weapon now clears mist. Bears spawn less often and have less health. The Ashlands spawn fewer multi-enemy groups. Rare drops use pseudo-random luck. The Swamp has a new creature, the Writhan, whose roots unlock the Shield of Roots, the Lox Fur set and the Birds' Nest.

What did Valheim patch 1.0.20 change?

Patch 1.0.20 (15 October 2026) makes trophy drop chance go up with a monster's star level and stops rare-drop luck from resetting between sessions. It also fixes a Forge of Potential exploit, clears the "cheated" flag a launch bug put on legitimately obtained items, and stops dedicated servers from running at an uncapped frame rate.

How do I get the bigger inventory in Valheim 1.0?

Buy the upgrades from Haldor, the Black Forest trader. Wider Pockets costs 1,000 coins and unlocks after you defeat Moder. Deeper Pockets costs 2,000 coins and unlocks after you defeat The Queen. Each adds a permanent extra inventory row, and both work in existing worlds.
