🎯 The core idea

Your first Valheim days are about three things: eat well, stay Rested and build a small shelter fast. Pick up everything in the Meadows, craft a stone axe and a hammer, put a roofed workbench, campfire and bed next to the Sacrificial Stones, and upgrade your cheap tools before you chase better ones. The first boss can wait until your base works for you.

  • free costs nothing
  • cheap small cost
  • setup needs preparation
  • grind pays off slowly
  • skip the thing to stop doing

This Valheim beginner guide follows GMODISM's spoiler-free first episode, recorded on the 1.0 / Deep North release (September 2026), and checks its numbers against the Valheim wiki. Everything here still applies on live patch 1.0.20. It's written for the 2026 wave of new players, including anyone starting solo, and it stays inside the Meadows, the starting biome. Nothing below spoils later biomes.

Settings and Valheim controls to check first

free Before you load a world, open Settings. In Graphics, pick a preset that holds a steady frame rate. Many players also turn off depth of field and camera shake (falling trees shake the screen a lot). Then open the Keyboard & Mouse tab and learn the default Valheim controls. The video's game is in Swedish, so "Blanksteg" is Space and "Skift" is Shift.

When you make a world, leave the world modifiers alone on your first run. You can change them later if something turns out too hard or too easy. Your character isn't tied to one world, but a fresh character for a fresh world is more fun. The video also suggests starting a new world if you played before 1.0, so you get the new Deep North content.

What to do first at the Sacrificial Stones

free This is how to start Valheim on day one: pick up everything. Every new item you pick up unlocks recipes, and nearly everything gets used later. Turn auto-pickup on with V. Branches and stones lie on the ground around the spawn, and mushrooms and raspberries grow close to the starting area.

Open the inventory (Tab) and you can already craft without a workbench. Your first crafting basics, with costs from the wiki:

ItemCostWhy you want it
Stone axe5 wood, 4 stoneChops trees; your first real weapon (15 slash)
Hammer3 wood, 2 stoneOpens the build menu
Club6 woodBlunt weapon (12 blunt)
Torch1 wood, 1 resinLight at night; also a weak weapon

The crow that lands nearby is Hugin. Click him for tips, and read the loading screens too. In Valheim, what to do first is simple: get the stone axe, chop a few trees (they drop wood and resin), then make the hammer.

Combat basics: parry, dodge and skills

setup The first hostile creatures you meet are Greylings and Boars. You start with 25 health and 50 stamina (wiki). The HUD in the video shows the same 25, while the narrator says 22. You punch with left mouse and block with right mouse. Block just before a hit lands and you parry. The wiki puts the window at under 0.25 seconds. A parried enemy is staggered, and a staggered creature takes 2x damage from your next hit.

Rolling (block plus jump) gets you out of an attack. The video says a well-timed roll makes you briefly immune to damage. The wiki has no dodge page to confirm the timing, so treat it as the video's tip. Every attack, roll and sprint drains the stamina bar in the middle of the screen, so don't empty it in the middle of a fight. The middle-mouse special attack costs a lot of stamina, so use it only when the enemy can't punish you right away.

The Vegvisir and your first boss

free The standing stones around your spawn are the Sacrificial Stones. Later you hang boss trophies here. The glowing Vegvisir rune stone next to them marks your first boss: press E on it and the altar of Eikthyr appears on your map. Don't go yet. Hunt deer with a bow, and bring two deer trophies to summon him. His Hard Antler becomes the Antler Pickaxe, the tool that opens up mining. Our Eikthyr boss guide covers the altar, his attacks and the fight plan.

Food is your health bar

free Food in Valheim doesn't stop you from starving. It raises your maximum health and stamina and gives healing per tick. You can have three different foods active at once (wiki), so eat three different things before any fight or long work session. Right-click a food in your inventory, or put it on the hotbar and press its number.

FoodMax healthMax staminaHealingDuration
Mushroom15151 hp/tick15 min
Raspberries7201 hp/tick10 min
Cooked boar meat30102 hp/tick20 min

All three values match the wiki and the in-game tooltips in the video. Raspberries grow along the edges of open meadows. Mark good bush patches on the map: press M, double-click, type a letter such as "R", and tick "visible" if you play with friends. Right-click a pin to remove it.

grind Valheim has no skill points. Each skill rises when you use it: chopping raises Wood Cutting, blocking raises Blocking, running raises Run, and so on (open the skills tab from the inventory to see them). In co-op, split the weapon types between players so each person gets good at one instead of everyone being mediocre at all of them.

Dying costs you, too. On the default death penalty you lose 5% of your total levels in each skill (wiki), and your gear stays in a tombstone where you died. Be careful near water and Black Forest edges for that reason.

Building your Valheim starter base

cheap You can build anywhere except right on top of the Sacrificial Stones, so set your Valheim starter base a short walk away. Equip the hammer, right-click to open the build menu (the 1.0 build menu was reworked, with categories and favorites), and place pieces. Scroll to rotate. Pieces snap together, and holding Shift turns snapping off. Q and E cycle snap points, but "auto" usually works.

Every piece shows a color for stability: blue is resting on the ground, and it fades through green toward red as it gets further from support. Red pieces can't hold anything more, and an unsupported structure collapses. Middle mouse removes a piece and gives the materials back. Rain wears unroofed wooden pieces down to half health (the wiki says by 1/20 of their health per minute), but it never destroys them.

Valheim workbench, campfire and bed

setup The Valheim workbench (10 wood) lets you build and craft within 20 meters. It needs a roof and walls before you can use it. The wiki says a roof and 70% cover. Inside a sheltered workbench you can repair all your gear for free (torches can't be repaired) and craft new items such as the hoe (5 wood, 2 stone) and the crude bow (10 wood, 8 leather scraps).

Then add these:

  • Campfire (5 stone, 2 wood): removes Cold, dries you off fast, and is one of the few things you can build without a workbench nearby. Feed it wood with E. The video uses the hoe's raise-ground tool to put dirt under the fire, because its house stands on poles.
  • Smoke vents: a fire indoors makes smoke, and standing in it deals damage over time (wiki). Leave a gap in the roof or a window.
  • Bed (8 wood): place it under a roof near a fire and press E to set your spawn point. Sleep to skip the night.
  • Chest (10 wood): 10 storage slots. Hold E on a chest to drop in every stack that matches something already inside.

Pin your home on the map as soon as it stands. Middle-click a spot on the map to ping it for everyone in the session.

Rested and comfort keep you going

free Rest near a fire under a roof for 20 seconds and you get Rested: +50% health regeneration and +100% stamina regeneration (wiki). The duration depends on your comfort level. The wiki says it's 7 minutes plus 1 minute per comfort level. The video's comfort 4 shows 11:00 on screen, and the narrator rounds that to "10 minutes". Adding decorations raised it to comfort 5.

Comfort rewards decoration, so add a bed, fire, rugs and anything else you can afford. Only the best item in each category counts, though: two beds won't stack. You don't need to sleep to get Rested. Sitting near a campfire in the wild (X) also works, at a lower comfort level. Head home before Rested runs out, or everything takes longer.

Night, Cold and Wet: the debuffs that slow you down

skip One of the classic Valheim beginner mistakes is working through the night. Nights are more dangerous, and outside a fire's range you get Cold: -50% health regeneration and -25% stamina regeneration (wiki). Rain or swimming adds Wet for 120 seconds after you're dry again: -25% health and -15% stamina regeneration. Cold and Wet stack. A campfire clears Wet quickly. Jump over small streams instead of wading through them.

A lit torch keeps some creatures from caring about you. The video points out that boars in particular avoid fire. The torch is a weapon, too. The wiki lists it at 4 blunt plus 15 fire damage, so it does more than the plain blunt damage the video mentions.

Exploring the Meadows: water, flint and swimming

free This is the part of the Meadows guide most new players skip: walk the shoreline. Valheim flint lies near water (wiki), and you need it for the flint axe and the first workbench upgrade. The video recommends practicing swimming close to shore before you swim anywhere far. Swimming drains stamina, and you drown when it runs out.

Abandoned houses in the Meadows hide chests and, inside, bee nests (wiki). Put a workbench next to a ruin, then use the hammer's middle-click on its lower pieces to bring it down and collect the material. Watch out: the bees attack. Each nest gives a queen bee, and a queen bee plus 10 wood makes a beehive for honey at home. The wiki says queen bees don't respawn, so take every one you find.

Don't go into a dark forest yet. The Black Forest next to the Meadows has creatures your starting gear can't handle. Mark it on the map and come back later.

Upgrade your Valheim stone axe before chasing flint

cheap Workbench upgrades are pieces you place within about 2 meters of the bench. The chopping block (10 wood, 10 flint) raises the bench to level 2. The tanning rack (10 wood, 15 flint, 20 leather scraps, 5 deer hide) raises it to level 3. Every level unlocks a higher upgrade tier for your gear. The upgrade tab in the video shows the stone axe going to quality 2 for 2 stone, with durability rising to 130.

The video's tip is to upgrade cheap gear before making new gear. That holds for durability and slash damage, but the wiki numbers show where it stops:

AxeSlashChopDurability
Stone axe, quality 11520100
Stone axe, quality 32526160
Flint axe, quality 1 (4 wood, 6 flint)2030100
Flint axe, quality 33036160

So a fully upgraded stone axe hits creatures harder than a fresh flint axe, but it chops trees more slowly. Our take is to upgrade both, because the stone costs almost nothing.

Cooking boar meat and hunting deer

cheap Raw boar meat can't be eaten. Build a cooking station (2 wood) over your campfire, put the meat on it, and take it off when it sizzles. Leave one piece on too long and it turns into coal. The video says it's worth burning one piece on purpose, because picking up coal unlocks new recipes.

Deer bolt as soon as they notice you, so melee barely works on them. Crouch (Ctrl) to sneak up. Sneaking drains stamina, but sneak attacks deal extra damage. Then use the crude bow. Deer give the hide for the tanning rack and the trophies for Eikthyr, and a deer hide rug gives you an extra comfort level.

Taming boars and the stars on creatures

grind In the video, the narrator spares 1-star and 2-star boars on purpose. Starred creatures are bigger, drop more loot, and their offspring can inherit the stars. To tame one, lure it into a small pit or pen, jump out, and drop mushrooms, raspberries or other food it eats inside. Then stay nearby, quiet and out of sight. Keep fire away from the pen, because fire makes boars flee.

The wiki puts taming at 30 minutes of uninterrupted, fed, calm time. Each meal lasts 10 minutes, so three food items are enough if nothing interrupts it. Sleeping doesn't speed taming up and wastes the food. Leave this until your Valheim early game base is running, because it ties you to one spot for half an hour.

Valheim tips and tricks that save time

free Small habits that make the first days easier:

  • Check the build and crafting menus often. New items unlock as soon as you pick up a new material.
  • Watch your carry weight. The base limit is 300 (wiki). Over that you're encumbered and nearly stop moving. Shift-click a stack to split it and drop part of it.
  • Held items slow you. The stone axe tooltip shows -5% movement speed, and the video says most items in your hands do the same.
  • Watch for falling trees. They deal a lot of damage, especially to a 25-health character.
  • Ctrl-click moves a stack between your inventory and a chest.
  • Use the hoe to level ground, raise it (costs stone), or lay a path. Leveling the ground while you stand higher up lets you build a land bridge across shallow water without spending stone.
  • Don't rush. The video's main point is to stay in the "stone age" until your gear is upgraded and your food is solid.

How this guide was fact-checked

The source is GMODISM's "Essential Tips For Beginners! - Valheim 1.0 New Player Guide EP1 (Spoiler Free)", uploaded 10 September 2026, the day after Valheim 1.0 / Deep North launched. It's current for live patch 1.0.20. The 1.0.17 and 1.0.20 patch notes change nothing covered here.

Checked against the Valheim wiki on Fandom:

  • Starting stats: 25 health, 50 stamina, 300 carry weight. The narrator says 22 health, but the HUD in the video shows 25.
  • Food values for mushroom, raspberries and cooked boar meat, and the three-food limit.
  • Recipes for the stone axe, flint axe, hammer, hoe, club, torch, crude bow, workbench, chopping block, tanning rack, campfire, bed, chest, cooking station and beehive.
  • Workbench rules: 20 m range, needs a roof and 70% cover, free repairs, upgrades within 2 m.
  • Rested: 7 minutes plus 1 minute per comfort level. The video says "10 minutes" at comfort 4, while the wiki formula and the on-screen timer both give 11.
  • Cold, Wet, smoke damage, rain weathering to half health, the parry window, 2x damage on staggered creatures, the death penalty, flint and bee nest locations, and taming time.
  • Corrections: the torch does fire damage as well as blunt (the video only mentions blunt). The upgraded stone axe out-damages a fresh flint axe in combat, but not at chopping trees.

From the video's own footage only: the settings and key layout, the -5% movement speed on the stone axe tooltip, the stone axe quality-2 upgrade for 2 stone, and the dodge immunity window (the wiki has no dodge page to confirm it).

What this guide doesn't answer

  • How to fight Eikthyr: see the Eikthyr boss guide. This guide only shows you where the Vegvisir points.
  • The Black Forest and anything after it: the source series stays spoiler-free here, and so does this guide.
  • Dedicated servers and co-op setup: the video skips server hosting, and so do we.
  • World modifier presets: the advice for a first run is to leave them on default. Tuning them is a separate topic.
  • Farming and breeding in depth: this guide only covers taming the first boar.

Frequently asked

What should I do first in Valheim?

Pick up everything near the Sacrificial Stones, because new items unlock recipes. Then craft a stone axe (5 wood, 4 stone) and a hammer (3 wood, 2 stone). Next, build a roofed workbench, a campfire and a bed nearby, and eat mushrooms and raspberries so your health and stamina go up.

How do I get the Rested buff in Valheim?

Stay near a fire under a roof for 20 seconds. Rested gives +50% health regeneration and +100% stamina regeneration. It lasts 7 minutes plus 1 minute per comfort level, so a comfort 4 shelter gives 11 minutes. Sitting by a campfire in the open also works, at a lower comfort level.

Why can't I use my workbench in Valheim?

A workbench needs a roof and enough walls around it. The wiki asks for a roof and 70% cover. Once it's sheltered you can craft, build within 20 meters, and repair all your gear for free. Torches are the only thing it can't repair.

Is the flint axe better than the stone axe in Valheim?

At the same quality, yes. A fresh flint axe (4 wood, 6 flint) does 20 slash and 30 chop. A stone axe upgraded to quality 3 does 25 slash and 26 chop, so it hits harder in a fight but cuts trees more slowly. Upgrades are cheap, so it's worth upgrading both at the workbench.

How do I find the first boss in Valheim?

Press E on the glowing Vegvisir stone at the Sacrificial Stones where you spawn. That marks Eikthyr's altar on your map. To summon him, bring two deer trophies to the altar. He drops Hard Antler, which you craft into the Antler Pickaxe.
