WARNO Micro Control Tips for Faster Unit Management

Micro control tips for WARNO: auto cover, radar AA control groups, synchronized howitzer volleys, corrected shot, and recon openings. It is for players who already know the controls and want to spend fewer clicks keeping units covered, aimed and loaded.

Adapted from TOP 10 WARNO Tips

This guide turns a handful of WARNO habits into a checklist you can run mid-battle: when to leave auto cover on and when to override it, how to keep radar AA such as Cubs off SEAD's target list with a control group, and how to get a howitzer battery to release its shells together. It also covers corrected shot, opening the game with recon helicopters, and the order to queue load and move commands after an accidental unload or a towed artillery volley.

Core micro habits to practice first

Use these WARNO micro control tips as a short combat checklist before you add more complicated unit handling.

  • Keep auto cover on when you want units to move into cover without pixel micro.
  • Toggle auto cover off when the automatic cover move would stop you from saving a unit under fire.
  • Check AA cards for radar, because radar AA can be spotted and targeted by SEAD aircraft.
  • Put radar AA such as Cubs in a control group so you can turn radar off and on quickly.
  • Synchronize howitzers with return fire after you give the aim order.
  • Use corrected shot when you want smaller artillery dispersion and higher damage.
  • Start with at least two recon helicopters if you want early information on the opponent’s main force.
  • After accidental unloads, select the unloaded units together and right-click a unit of choice so they return to their respective transports.
  • After towed artillery fires, queue load orders first, then queue move orders.

How to choose

Auto cover choice

Use WARNO efficient combat controls by leaving auto cover on when you want to avoid pixel micro and let units move into cover automatically.

Choose auto cover off when a unit is being shot by an autocannon or tank and the automatic cover behavior would expose it or pull it into the wrong position.

If you bind the auto-cover toggle to Alt, pressing Alt can switch the unit from cover behavior to nothing, letting you pull it behind a building and stop it there.

Pressing Alt again returns the unit to auto cover, which can send it back into the building.

Frequently asked

Should I leave auto cover on in WARNO?

Leave it on when you want units to move into cover without pixel micro. Turn it off when a unit is being shot by an autocannon or a tank and the automatic cover move would expose it or pull it into the wrong position. With the toggle bound to Alt you can drop cover behavior, pull the unit behind a building and stop it there, and press Alt again to hand it back to auto cover.

How do I stop SEAD aircraft from killing my radar AA?

Put radar AA such as Cubs in a control group and toggle the group off when SEAD is a threat, then back on when you need the radar again. SEAD planes spot radar AA and hit it with anti-radiation missiles; EW planes spot it too but affect its accuracy rather than shooting at it.

How do I make my howitzers fire at the same time?

Give the aim order first, since howitzers often do not start aiming at the same moment. Then select them, click return fire so the guns wait for each other, and click return fire again to release them together. The shells land at once, which gives the target less time to retreat after the first shell warns them.

What does corrected shot do in WARNO?

It gives smaller dispersion and much higher damage, and can make artillery two or three times more powerful. Aim inside the corrected-shot circle to keep the benefit, because aiming outside it makes the circle and the dispersion bigger. Hold Control when you are inside the circle but want to mitigate the effect for fire for effect.
