WARNO divisions sort into four playstyle buckets — airborne, heavy tank, mech or medium tank, and reservist spam — rather than into NATO and Pact. This guide gives each bucket its named example divisions, the units and armour numbers behind it, and the opening plan it wants, so you can pick a deck that matches how you like to play and read what you are facing across the table.
Quick answer
| What | Answer |
|---|---|
| Sort decks by | Division category, not NATO vs Pact |
| The four buckets | Airborne, heavy tank, mech or medium tank, reservist spam |
| Most prevalent category | Mech and medium tank builds |
| Start here if new | Mech or medium tank builds, or heavy tank builds |
| Heavy tank threshold | Roughly 18+ armor (sometimes 17), guns usually 18 to 19 penetration or more |
| Hardest category | Reservist spam — fewest divisions, very micro intensive |
| Playing against armor | Play wide; the armor blob cannot cover every lane with AA |
WARNO deck archetypes: judge divisions, not NATO vs Pact
| Sorting approach | What it means |
|---|---|
| NATO vs Pact | Do not sort playstyle by side. There is no clean-cut playstyle divide between NATO and Pact, because playstyle differences depend on individual divisions. |
| Division category | Use four broad buckets for WARNO deck archetypes: airborne, heavy tank, mech or medium tank, and reservist spam. Each bucket changes how you take ground, how many units you micro, and how forgiving losses are. |
| Overlap | Treat the buckets as guidelines, not strict rules. Many divisions overlap between two categories, and SED is a clear overlap example because it has spam characteristics and airborne elements. |
Airborne deck types: fast ground grabs, infantry, and air control
WARNO heavy tank decks: narrow pushes with elite armor
Use narrow armor, or play wide against it
Choose this style when you want slower, narrower gameplay built around fewer elite units. Heavy tanks are treated here as roughly 18 or more armor, sometimes 17 armor, with guns usually at 18 to 19 penetration or more. Examples include Third Armored, First A Cav, 79th, and 119th.
Use conservative openers, then blob in one area and push a narrow front. These divisions concentrate AA because their armor can be exposed to aircraft.
Respect the penetration numbers. The M1A1 has 20 penetration, and the M1A1 Abrams is given as a 21-penetration example.
Play wide against this style when you are facing it. A wide game is usually ideal because the armor blob cannot cover every lane with AA.
Do not assume every armor division has the same air defense weakness. Third Armored and First A Cav have weaker AA, but Third Armored compensates with the F-15 fighter. 119th also has poor AA but superb fighters.
WARNO mech decks and medium tank builds: the flexible middle ground
| Mech and medium tank decks | What it means |
|---|---|
| Middle-ground identity | Mech and medium tank builds are the most prevalent category in WARNO. They sit between infantry, airborne, and full tank builds, with examples such as 39th, 27th, Second Panzergren, Eighth, and 5E. |
| Unit mix | These divisions are not airborne and not full heavy tank decks. They often run M1 Mons, Leopards, Leopard 2A3s, T-55s, AMXs, and BMP-2 or BMP-3 IFVs. |
| Why they forgive mistakes | They are more forgiving than heavy tank decks because losing a 130-point tank is less costly than losing a 275-point tank. They can play aggressively across the board, blob in one area, or play wide, so one strong division can translate well into a new division, even though division types still vary. |
If you are new, start with mech or medium tank builds, or with heavy tank builds. Those are the categories the speaker recommends for new players, and getting good with one of these divisions usually translates pretty well to a new division.
WARNO reservist spam: cheap units, wide pressure, and high micro
Expect casualties and constant micro
Use the reservist style only if you are ready to fight across the whole map. This category has the fewest divisions, with Berlin Gruppe, Rügen AR KDA, 35th US, Div Mod, and 303 named as examples.
These divisions use cheap T-34s, T-55s, or M-60s with lots of disheartened infantry. Their plan is to play wide, spam across the entire map, and win with numbers rather than quality.
Do not play this like a conservative armor deck. You have to expect casualties and play hyper aggressive, because the style is very hard and micro intensive.
The payoff is tempo. These decks can overwhelm opponents and can run over heavy tank decks quickly when those decks do not have enough units on the board to shoot everything.
If you are new or mid-level, avoid this category until your micro improves. Even the aircraft are micro intensive: cheap aircraft are easy to lose, but you still should not throw them away carelessly.
They are not necessarily weaker, but they take more time and understanding to play well.

Frequently asked
Is there a NATO vs Pact playstyle difference in WARNO?
No. There is no clean-cut playstyle divide between the two sides, because playstyle differences depend on individual divisions. Sort by division category instead, and treat the categories as guidelines — SED, for example, has both spam characteristics and airborne elements.
Which WARNO deck type should a new player start with?
Mech or medium tank builds, or heavy tank builds. Getting good with one of those divisions usually translates pretty well to a new division. Avoid reservist spam until your micro improves.
What counts as a heavy tank deck in WARNO?
Heavy tanks are treated here as roughly 18 or more armor, sometimes 17 armor, with guns usually at 18 to 19 penetration or more. Examples include Third Armored, First A Cav, 79th and 119th.
How do you play against a heavy tank division?
Play wide. The armor blob cannot cover every lane with AA, so a wide game is usually ideal. Do not assume every armor division shares that weakness — Third Armored has weaker AA but compensates with the F-15 fighter, and 119th also has poor AA but superb fighters.
