Valheim Trader Locations: Haldor, Hildir and Bog Witch

Where Haldor, Hildir and the Bog Witch spawn in Valheim 1.0, how to find them with your world seed and no console, and what each one sells, including Haldor's new Wider and Deeper Pockets inventory upgrades.

Adapted from How To Find All 3 Traders in Valheim 1.0 (Haldor, Bog Witch, Hildir)

🎯 The core idea

Valheim has three traders and each one sits in a fixed biome: Haldor in the Black Forest at least 1,500 m from the world centre, Hildir in the Meadows 3,000 to 5,100 m out, and the Bog Witch in a Swamp 3,000 to 8,000 m out. Search those rings, or put your seed into a seed map to see every candidate spot. In 1.0, Haldor also sells two inventory upgrades, Wider Pockets and Deeper Pockets.

  • free costs nothing
  • cheap small cost
  • setup needs preparation
  • grind pays off slowly
  • skip the thing to stop doing

All three Valheim traders at a glance

Every Valheim trader (players often say merchant) works the same way. You buy with Coins, you sell valuables for Coins, and their stock grows as you kill bosses. Each camp sits inside a shimmering dome that creatures can't enter and you can't destroy, so it makes a safe place to set up a portal. The table below is the whole trader map in one place, taken from the Valheim wiki on Fandom.

TraderBiomeDistance from world centreMap iconBest reason to visit
HaldorBlack Forestat least 1,500 mBagMegingjord, Ymir flesh, Wider and Deeper Pockets, eggs
HildirMeadows3,000 to 5,100 m in practiceDressStamina-saving clothing, quests for her three chests
The Bog WitchSwamp3,000 to 8,000 mCauldronFeast spices, serving tray, mead ingredients

free Each trader has up to 10 possible spawn spots, but only one of each type ever exists in a world. Haldor is usually the first trader you meet because his ring starts closest to the centre, while Hildir and the Bog Witch sit in the outer half of the map.

How trader spawns work and why one isn't showing

The most common "trader not showing" problem has a simple cause. Your world doesn't have a trader until you walk or sail near one of their candidate spots. According to the wiki, the first candidate location you approach becomes that trader's permanent home, and every other candidate for that trader is dropped. The camp loads when you get within roughly 320 to 453 m, which is about twice the default minimap range. Once it loads, the trader's icon is added to your map for good.

The seed map in the video shows all the candidates at once, which is why this frame has two "Bog Witch" labels. They're possible spots, not two witches. If you've searched a whole biome and still found nothing, check these causes:

  • Wrong distance ring. A Meadows biome close to your spawn can never hold Hildir, and a Swamp closer than 3,000 m can never hold the Bog Witch.
  • You passed too far away. Sailing past a coast 600 m away won't load a camp that sits further inland.
  • skip Don't spawn a trader with console commands. The trader you already have is placed at a fixed spot, and a seed map will find it in two minutes without cheating.

Haldor's location in the Black Forest

Haldor is a Dvergr trader who camps with his Lox, Halstein. The wiki lists 10 possible Black Forest spots for him, all at least 1,500 m from the world centre, so the Black Forest next to your spawn is almost never the right place. Sail along coasts that border large dark-green forests past that distance and keep the map open: his bag icon shows up as soon as his area loads.

His camp has a wagon, a canopy, barrels and display racks of weapons and food. Since the 1.0 update it also has a bearskin rug that you can break for a guaranteed Bear Trophy. cheap Drop a portal right outside the dome the first time you arrive. You'll be back several times as your boss kills unlock more of his stock, and coins (0.1 weight, stacks of 999) are allowed through portals.

Haldor's items: Megingjord, pocket upgrades and more

Haldor's stock grows with your progress. Two items new in 1.0 are the main reason to come back: Wider Pockets and Deeper Pockets, each of which adds one line of inventory slots. The 1.0 patch notes list them as "upgradeable pockets", with the note to visit Haldor for inventory upgrades. Prices and unlocks below come from the Haldor page on the Fandom wiki (last edited 2026-10-19).

ItemPrice (Coins)UnlocksWhat it does

Wider Pockets1,000After ModerAdds one line of inventory slots
Egg1,500After YagluthStarts chicken farming
Deeper Pockets2,000After The QueenAdds one line of inventory slots

grind Buy the Megingjord first: 150 extra carry weight changes every ore run. The pocket upgrades are this trader's big late-game coin sink. Together they cost 3,000 Coins for two extra inventory rows. The Fandom wiki has a short page for Deeper Pockets but no page yet for Wider Pockets, so its price and unlock come only from Haldor's shop table.

Coins and the valuables every trader buys

All three traders buy the same four valuables at the same prices, so it doesn't matter where you sell:

ValuableCoins eachStack sizeCoins per full stack
Amber520100
Amber pearl1050500
Ruby2020400
Silver necklace3020600

Coins also drop from Trolls, Fulings and Dvergr, and you find them in chests in Burial Chambers, Sunken Crypts and abandoned buildings. The 1.0 patch notes add four more valuables (Ancient Coin, Draumyx, Grimvarn and Solryth), but the Fandom wiki has no pages for them yet, so this guide doesn't list prices for them.

Hildir's location in the Meadows

Hildir is Haldor's sister. She camps with two Lox, Blåbär and Hallon, around a big wagon, tents, divans and her own Iron Fire Pit. Like her brother she has 10 possible spots, each at least 1,000 m apart. The game tries to place her 3,000 to 8,000 m from the centre, but Meadows only reach out to about 5,100 m, so in practice you're looking for outer Meadows between 3,000 and 5,100 m. Those are often the grassy edges of islands you'd otherwise sail past. Her dress icon appears once her area loads.

free Her basic stock is open from day one: simple dresses and tunics in natural colour (250), red and purple simple caps (150), a headband (175), a sparkler (150), an iron pit (75) and the barber kit (600). Every clothing piece she sells reduces stamina use: shirts lower base item stamina usage by 20% and hats by 15%. That makes them good to wear on long building or travel sessions where armour isn't needed.

Hildir's quests and the three chests

Hildir's real draw is her quest map. Use the map table in front of her and three dungeon types are marked on your map, each with a miniboss holding one of her stolen chests. In the seed map in the video, these same spots show under the "Quests" layer.

Quest dungeonBiomeMinibossChestWhat it unlocks in her shop
Smouldering TombsBlack ForestBrennaBrass chestColoured simple dresses and tunics (350), Harvest tunic and dress (550), Straw hat (300), blue headscarf and brown fur cap (200)

Sealed TowerPlainsZil (of Zil & Thungr)Bronze chestBeaded dresses and tunics (550), red headscarf, grey fur cap and orange cap (300), basic fireworks (50)

setup Plan the trip home before you open each Hildir chest dungeon. Each chest weighs 200, and wood portals won't take it, but a stone portal will. You can return only one chest of each type. Each return also starts a new raid event where that miniboss and its minions can attack your base, so build defences first. The Harvest tunic, Harvest dress and Straw hat give a +25 Farming set bonus, which is the most useful set of Hildir's clothes.

The wiki puts the quest dungeons at up to three of each per world: Smouldering Tombs 3,000 to 8,000 m out, Howling Caverns 1,000 to 8,000 m out above 200 m altitude, and Sealed Towers anywhere above 8 m altitude.

The Bog Witch's location and items

The Bog Witch is a Greydwarf trader who lives in a hut decorated with potions, with a Greydwarf at the door and a Kvastur sweeping inside. She has up to 10 candidate spots, all in Swamps, each at least 1,000 m apart and 3,000 to 8,000 m from the centre. Look for the cauldron icon. Her hut counts as comfort level 3 and gives every relevant shelter buff, so she's a safe place to rest in the middle of a Swamp.

setup She sells everything you need for Feasts: the serving tray (needed to eat a Feast) plus one spice per biome. That makes her a key stop for the feast recipes in our Valheim food guide. Bog Witch items from the wiki:

The Crown of Roots is new in 1.0. The wiki lists it as unlocking after you defeat a Writhan, an undead Swamp creature added in 1.0, not a boss.

How to find your world seed

From here the guide covers the video's method. It skips the long search by showing every trader location on a map built from your world seed. You need the seed first, and it's in plain sight. On the Select World screen, each world in the list has its seed code on the right of the row; in the video it's the 10-character code next to the world named "Guide".

If you play on a friend's dedicated server, that world isn't in your local list, so ask the host for the seed. The video doesn't show this step.

Using a seed map to find all traders without cheats

The video uses the unofficial Valheim World Generator at valheim-map.world. The auto-captions mishear the address, but it's shown on screen and in the video description. Enter the seed, leave the world version on the 1.0 setting ("1.0.7 (or newer)" in the video), press Go, and in the Locations list tick Traders (Haldor, Hildir and Bog Witch). The map then shows every candidate camp, with coordinates when you hover over a spot.

free This is the fastest no-console answer to "where's the trader", with two caveats from the site's own notes in the video:

  • Worlds made before 1.0 can be different. The site says predictions are only accurate for new worlds. For an older world, you have to open and save it in Valheim 1.0 first, then upload the world file instead of only typing the seed.
  • Candidates, not confirmed camps. If you've already discovered a trader in-game, that's their only spot. The other markers for that trader are unused. Go to the candidate nearest your base or portal network first.

It's a spoiler tool. If you enjoy exploring, sail the right distance rings from the sections above instead. If you've lost a whole evening to Swamps without a cauldron icon, this is the time saver the video promises. For the late-game regions beyond the traders, see our Valheim Deep North guide and the full progression guide.

How this guide was fact-checked

  • Source video: MrCoreRPG, "How To Find All 3 Traders in Valheim 1.0 (Haldor, Bog Witch, Hildir)", uploaded 2026-09-18 (after 1.0 launched on 2026-09-09). It is a 56-second short covering only the seed-map method. It does not cover Haldor's Deeper and Wider Pockets or any shop contents, so everything about items, prices and unlocks comes from the wiki, not the video.
  • From the Valheim wiki on Fandom (checked 2026-10-20): spawn rules, distances and map icons on the Haldor, Hildir and The Bog Witch pages. The Haldor and Hildir pages were last edited 2026-10-19 and the Bog Witch page 2026-10-06, all after the 1.0 launch. Also checked: the Trader, Coins, Megingjord, Deeper Pockets and Writhan pages, and the 1.0.00 to 1.0.20 entries on the Version history page (pockets, Crown of Roots, new valuables).
  • From the video's screen: the seed's position on the Select World screen, the generator's version setting, the Traders and Quests layers, the "possible locations" tooltip and the note about pre-1.0 worlds.
  • Corrections: the video's captions give the site as "valheim.thismap.world"; the on-screen title and the video description both say valheim-map.world. The wiki says the trader spots the site shows are only candidates, and the first one you approach becomes permanent. The video doesn't make that clear.
  • Gaps stated plainly: the wiki has no Wider Pockets page, and no pages or sell prices for the 1.0 valuables (Ancient Coin, Draumyx, Grimvarn, Solryth).

What this guide doesn't answer

  • Exact coordinates for your world: every seed is different. Use your own seed in the generator.
  • How to beat Brenna, Geirrhafa and Zil & Thungr: each miniboss fight deserves its own guide. This one only covers where the chests come from and what they unlock.
  • Feast recipes and food values: covered in the food guide. Here we only list which Bog Witch spice each feast needs.
  • Sell prices of the new 1.0 valuables: not documented on the wiki yet, so they're left out rather than guessed.
  • Modded or dedicated-server trader tweaks: mods and server-side settings can move or add traders. This guide covers the unmodded game on patch 1.0.20.

Frequently asked

Where is the trader in Valheim?

There are three. Haldor camps in a Black Forest at least 1,500 m from the world centre (bag icon), Hildir in a Meadows biome roughly 3,000 to 5,100 m out (dress icon), and the Bog Witch in a Swamp 3,000 to 8,000 m out (cauldron icon). Each has up to 10 candidate spots; the first one you approach becomes permanent.

Why is the Valheim trader not showing on my map?

A trader only appears once you come within roughly 320 to 453 m of one of their candidate spots, about twice the default minimap range. Searching too close to spawn is the usual mistake: Hildir and the Bog Witch never spawn closer than 3,000 m, and Haldor never closer than 1,500 m. Putting your world seed into a seed map shows every candidate spot.

How do I get Deeper Pockets and Wider Pockets in Valheim?

Both are bought from Haldor and were added in the 1.0 update. Wider Pockets costs 1,000 Coins and unlocks after you defeat Moder; Deeper Pockets costs 2,000 Coins and unlocks after The Queen. Each adds one extra line of inventory slots.

What do Hildir's chests unlock in Valheim?

Her map table marks three quest dungeons. Brenna in the Smouldering Tombs drops the brass chest, Geirrhafa in the Howling Caverns the silver chest, and Zil in the Sealed Tower the bronze chest. Each returned chest unlocks more clothing in her shop, such as the Harvest set with +25 Farming, but also starts a raid event by that miniboss. Chests weigh 200 and need a stone portal, not a wood one.

How do I find Valheim traders without cheats?

Copy your world seed from the Select World screen, enter it in an unofficial seed map such as valheim-map.world, set the world version to 1.0 and tick the Traders layer. It shows every candidate camp for Haldor, Hildir and the Bog Witch. Worlds made before 1.0 should be opened and saved in 1.0, then uploaded, for accurate results.
