π― The core idea
Boars are the easiest Valheim tame and the cheapest steady source of boar meat and leather scraps. Build a small walled pen with a hidden lookout, lure in a starred boar, feed it red mushrooms or berries while you stay out of sight, and it is tame in 30 real minutes. Then let the pen breed up to five and keep only the highest-star piglets.

What a boar farm gives you in 1.0
grind A boar drops boar meat and leather scraps, and nothing else apart from a 15% trophy chance. A zero-star boar drops 1 of each, a one-star drops 2 and a two-star drops 4, so the video's "double for one star, quadruple for two" matches the wiki exactly. That is why a farm full of starred boars is worth more than any amount of hunting: once the pen is running you walk in with a Butcher knife and walk out with a stack of both materials. This guide follows a 1.0 video by 04AM (uploaded 21 September 2026, after the 9 September 1.0 / Deep North launch) and checks every number against the Valheim wiki on Fandom. Nothing about boar taming or breeding was reworked in the 1.0 patches up to the current 1.0.20, so this is effectively the Valheim boar 1.0 state of play. If you are brand new, read the Valheim beginner guide first; boars are usually the first animal you tame.
Where to find boars and why the world centre has no stars
free Boars live in the Meadows, the starting biome. The wiki lists three sources: the normal Meadows spawn zones (up to 4 at a time, common), one-time spawn points near boar runestones (1 to 9 boars, as the video says) and one-time spawn points at abandoned Meadows farms (0 to 2). During the "Eikthyr rallies the creatures of the forest" raid, before you kill Eikthyr, extra boars appear, but event boars never have stars.
One detail the video skips: boars from the regular Meadows spawn zones have a 0% chance of stars within 800 meters of the world centre. If you keep finding plain boars around your spawn stone, that is why. Head further out, or check the runestone boars, which roll stars normally.
Star boars and the real 10% and 1% odds
setup A star shows under the name bar; the frame above is a wild one-star boar caught in the pen. The video says one-stars appear "about 10%" of the time and two-stars 1%. The wiki's level rules make that slightly more precise: every eligible spawn rolls a 10% chance to reach one star, then another 10% to reach two. So roughly 9% of boars end up one-star and 1% two-star. Stars also double the boar's health and raise its damage (the wiki gives 10 / 15 / 20 blunt for the gore attack at 0, 1 and 2 stars), so a two-star boar is still harmless to anyone in early armor.
skip The video mentions the old advice to hunt at night for better star odds and says it can't confirm it after 1.0. The wiki's level page lists no night bonus for boars and says star chance does not depend on world progression or day count; only some night creatures, such as wolves, spawn with stars at night. Treat it as a myth and hunt whenever it suits you.
Building the boar pen
cheap The video's pen costs only wood. Pick a flat patch of Meadows, flatten any bumps with the hoe's Level Ground tool, drop a workbench, then place wood walls in a ring: place one, rotate one notch, place the next, and repeat until the circle closes. On two opposite sides, swap a wall section for a wood door so you have a gate on each side; that makes luring much easier later.
A good valheim boar pen does not need to be big. Breeding only counts animals within 10 meters, so a ring a few walls across is plenty. The wiki also suggests a cheaper alternative: dig a pit with a pickaxe and lure the boar into it, since a deep hole keeps it out of your line of sight. For nicer looking enclosures, the Valheim building tips guide covers walls, roofs and stability.
The lookout platform that keeps you hidden
setup The most useful extra in the video is a small lookout built against the pen: a few walls, a staircase, a thatch roof and, most importantly, a half-height wall at the front. Crouch behind that low wall and the boars inside can't see you, while you can still drop food over the edge. The wiki agrees with the idea: keeping the animal out of your line of sight lowers the chance it gets frightened, and every fright delays taming. Taming also only progresses while a player is within roughly 64 meters, so you need somewhere to wait that is close by.
The boar trap: luring one through the gate
free Find a boar, let it notice you, and run back through one of the gates. Wild boars charge and then back off, which the wiki notes makes them easy to lead. Once it is inside, shut the door behind you or jump the wall, then climb to the lookout and start sneaking. The second gate is your escape route if the boar is between you and the first one. This simple valheim boar trap works for every boar you add later, too.
Runestone and abandoned-farm boars come with a catch. The wiki says they keep their anchor to their spawn point even after taming and always try to walk home, often sitting in a corner staring at it, which hurts breeding. Either tame and breed them where they spawned and move the piglets, or keep the original only until it has produced offspring.
Fire scares wild boars, so put out the campfire
skip Don't build a campfire, standing torch or other fire source near the pen. Wild boars are afraid of fire, including a torch in your hand, and a nearby flame flips them into the "Frightened" state shown above. A frightened or alerted boar does not eat and gains no taming progress. If you do spook one, stay crouched and out of sight; the video shows that after a while they calm down again and you can keep feeding. Once tamed, boars lose this fear completely.
Boar food and taming time
cheap The wiki's list of valheim boar food is short: raspberries, blueberries, carrots, onions, turnips and red mushrooms. Boars ignore everything else, including yellow mushrooms, so the video's "berries and mushrooms" means the red ones. Raspberries and red mushrooms grow right where the boars are, which makes them the natural early pick.
| Rule | Value from the wiki |
|---|---|
| Eating range | 1 m (food within 10 m must be reachable by walking) |
| How long one meal lasts | 10 minutes |
| Taming time, uninterrupted | 30 real minutes (600 ticks) |
| Food needed, uninterrupted | 3 items |
| With Brew of animal whispers | 15 minutes |
Drop a small stack instead of single items; a boar eats only one item from a stack at a time. The hover text shows progress, like the "Tameness 28%, Acclimatizing" in the frame above. The video's "one snack every 10 minutes, about 30 minutes in total" is exactly right. Don't sleep to speed it up: the wiki says sleeping doesn't advance taming and only burns the food.
If you have reached the Mountains, the Brew of animal whispers doubles taming speed for 10 minutes for animals within 60 meters. Its mead base takes 5 onions, 10 carrots and 1 pungent pebbles in a Mead ketill and ferments into six brews.
What changes once a boar is tamed
free When taming finishes you get a "Boar has been tamed" message, a burst of hearts and a sound cue, handy if you are alt-tabbed. A tamed boar joins your faction, no longer fears fire, can be renamed with LShift + E and needs feeding for passive health regeneration. It will fight wild creatures that wander near it, and you can only hurt it with a Butcher knife or with friendly fire on. Tamed boars also love an open gate: the wiki notes they run for any opening in the fence, so keep doors shut once the herd is in.
Valheim boar breeding and the five-boar limit
grind Breeding needs two tamed, well-fed boars within 3 meters of each other. Every 30 seconds each boar has a 33% roll to gain a love point, shown by pink hearts, as long as it isn't hungry or alerted and the area is active. The video says three bursts of hearts produce a baby. The wiki's own pages disagree with each other here: the Boar page says 3 love points, the general Taming table says 4, so expect three or four bursts. The pregnancy itself is invisible and lasts one minute, then a red cloud marks the birth about a meter away. Either boar can get pregnant, so both parents can give birth from the same pairing.
The cap is the number that matters: breeding stops once there are 5 boars within 10 meters, piglets included. The video's tip for boars that keep wandering apart works: hug the pen wall and push them together until the hearts start. Births happen a meter from the parent, so a piglet sometimes lands just outside the wall; you can push it back in.
Piglets, culling and breeding for stars
setup A valheim piglet is tame from birth, can't be renamed or commanded and takes 50 minutes to grow into an adult. Piglets drop nothing, so never kill them for loot. Unlike taming, piglets keep growing while you sleep or are away.
Because of the five-boar cap, the farm only keeps producing if you clear space. The wiki says offspring inherit the stars of the parent that gives birth, so a one-star mother gives one-star piglets. The video's approach is the right one: once a starred line is going, kill the zero-star adults with a Butcher knife (Forge, 2 wood and 4 tin) and replace them with starred offspring until the whole pen is one-star or two-star. That is the real boar tip of this guide; four starred adults plus a growing piglet out-produce a pen of plain boars two to four times over.
Using the meat and leather scraps
cheap The internal item ID for boar meat is RawMeat, so a boar pen is effectively a valheim raw meat farm and a valheim leather scraps farm in one. What the materials turn into, per the wiki:
| Output | Recipe | Effect or use |
|---|---|---|
| Cooked boar meat | 1 boar meat on a Cooking station | 30 health, 10 stamina, 20 min |
| Boar jerky (x2) | 1 boar meat, 1 honey, Cauldron | Black Forest balanced food |
| Minced meat sauce | 1 boar meat, 1 neck tail, 1 carrot, Cauldron | Black Forest health food |
| Whole roasted Meadow boar | 5 cooked boar meat, 2 cooked deer meat, 4 dandelion, 1 woodland herb blend | Feast: 35 health, 35 stamina, 50 min |
| Leather scraps | from every boar | Tanning rack, raft, rag armor, bronze and iron weapons, Fenris armor, Lox saddle, many banners |
Leather scraps feed so many recipes, from the first bow to Mountain armor, that a modest pen saves hours of hunting. For where boar dishes rank against later biomes, see the Valheim food guide.
How this guide was fact-checked
The source is 04AM's video "Valheim 1.0 EASY Boar Farm Guide! How to Tame & Breed Boars The RIGHT Way" (21 September 2026). The pen build, gates, lookout with a half wall, luring, the "Tameness" hover text, the tamed message and the named breeding boars are taken from what the video shows on screen. Every number was checked against the Valheim wiki on Fandom (the Boar, Taming, Level, Butcher knife, Brew of animal whispers, Boar meat, Leather scraps and Whole roasted Meadow boar pages). Confirmed by the wiki: 1 / 2 / 4 drops by star, 1 to 9 runestone boars, 30-minute taming, a meal every 10 minutes, fear of fire, the five-boar cap. Corrections and additions made:
- Star odds: the video's 10% and 1% are close; the wiki's rolls give about 9% one-star and 1% two-star, and 0% for spawn-zone boars within 800 m of the world centre (not in the video).
- Night hunting for stars: the video couldn't confirm it; the wiki lists no night bonus for boars, so this guide calls it a myth.
- Mushrooms: only red mushrooms work; boars ignore yellow ones.
- Love points: the video says three; the wiki's Boar page says 3 but its Taming table says 4.
- Added from the wiki: runestone and farm boars keep their spawn anchor, the 33% love-point roll, the Butcher knife recipe, the Brew of animal whispers and the food table.
There is no separate Fandom page for piglets; their behaviour comes from the breeding sections of the Boar and Taming pages.
What this guide doesn't answer
- A fully automatic boar farm. Self-feeding or self-killing designs depend on precise pathfinding (the wiki warns that creatures standing on poles or small floors won't eat); they deserve their own build guide.
- Wolf, Lox, hen and Asksvin taming. The rules are similar but the foods and caps differ; this is a boar-only valheim taming guide.
- Deep North animals. The video and the wiki pages used here cover nothing from the new biome.
- Server or mod settings that change spawn rates or taming speed, since those vary by world.
Frequently asked
How do you tame a boar in Valheim?
Trap a boar in a small pen, stay crouched and out of its sight, and drop raspberries, blueberries, carrots, onions, turnips or red mushrooms within its reach. Each meal keeps it fed for 10 minutes, and taming finishes after 30 real minutes without interruptions, using about three pieces of food. Keep fire away, because a frightened boar stops eating and taming pauses.
What food do boars eat in Valheim?
Boars only eat raspberries, blueberries, carrots, onions, turnips and red mushrooms. They ignore yellow mushrooms and every other item. Drop a small stack near them; a boar eats one item at a time from a stack and stays fed for 10 minutes per meal.
How many boars can you breed in one pen in Valheim?
Breeding stops once there are five boars, piglets included, within 10 meters. Two tamed, fed boars must stand within 3 meters of each other to earn love points (pink hearts). After three or four bursts one becomes pregnant and gives birth a minute later. Kill plain zero-star adults with a Butcher knife to make room for starred offspring.
How rare are one-star and two-star boars in Valheim?
Each eligible boar spawn rolls a 10% chance for one star and then another 10% for a second, so about 9% of boars are one-star and 1% are two-star. Boars from the normal Meadows spawn zones within 800 meters of the world centre never get stars, and the wiki lists no night bonus. A one-star drops 2 meat and 2 leather scraps, a two-star drops 4.
Do baby boars inherit stars in Valheim?
Yes. A piglet inherits the stars of the parent that gives birth to it, so a one-star mother produces one-star piglets. Piglets are tame from birth, drop nothing and take 50 minutes to grow into adults, so breed from your highest-star boars and replace the plain ones.
