Valheim Farming Guide: One Farm for All Crops (1.0)

How to build one Valheim 1.0 farm that grows every crop by tilling across the Plains and Mistlands border, with the wiki's crop table, spacing rules, fixes for plants that won't grow, and where the new oats, kale and Poteitr fit.

Adapted from Valheim 1.0 - How to make a single farm for all crops

🎯 The core idea

Every food crop in Valheim 1.0 except two grows in the Plains, and the two exceptions, Jotun puffs and Magecap, grow only in the Mistlands. Find a flat spot where those two biomes touch, till across the border and you have one farm for all crops: barley, flax, carrots, turnips, onions, the new oats and both Mistlands mushrooms, with sap roots and bees next door.

  • free costs nothing
  • cheap small cost
  • setup needs preparation
  • grind pays off slowly
  • skip the thing to stop doing

This Valheim farming guide is built on Asteroid Chan's short video from 2 October 2026, which was made after the 1.0 / Deep North launch (9 September 2026). Crop rules, grow times and spacing come from the Valheim wiki on Fandom. Where the two disagree, or where the wiki hasn't caught up with 1.0, we say so in the section.

Why the Plains and Mistlands border grows every crop

free Every crop in Valheim has a list of biomes it accepts. Plant it anywhere else and it shows "Can't grow in this environment" and never grows. The wiki's crop list breaks down like this:

  • Plains only: Barley and Flax.
  • Mistlands only: Jotun puffs and Magecap.
  • Plains and other biomes: Carrots and Onions (Meadows, Black Forest, Plains), and Turnips, which also grow in the Swamp and the Mistlands.

So no single biome takes all of them, but the Plains takes everything except the two Mistlands mushrooms. That is the whole trick behind the video. A farm that sits on the line between the two biomes can grow the complete list. The video suggests roughly a 20/80 split: a small Mistlands corner for the mushrooms and most of the field on the Plains side. Mistlands usually sit close to the Plains, so a border like this is easy to spot on the map.

Picking the farm site: flat ground, roots and cloudberries

setup The hardest part is finding the spot. Even the video's own field isn't perfectly flat. Here's what to look for, in order:

  • A long, open stretch of border. You need room for the Plains crops and a strip of Mistlands soil. Avoid places where giant Mistlands rocks hang over the soil, because crops under them get "Needs an open sky".
  • Ancient roots inside or next to the field. The video's site has two, so sap extractors can run while the crops grow (see the sap section below).
  • Cloudberry bushes. The video's spot turned out to have some. Cloudberries can't be planted. The wiki says the bushes refill every 300 minutes and won't come back if destroyed, so keep them when you clear the ground.
  • A Black Forest patch nearby is a bonus. The video's site has one between the two biomes, which gives corewood close by.

The video treats this as a farm, not a home base. You drop in, harvest and leave. Mistlands fog and flying enemies make it a poor place to live, and the video's creator wears a crown with a "Royalty" effect on the HUD that keeps creatures from attacking, which hides how busy the area really is. The wiki has no page for that crown, so take the video's word on it.

The Cultivator: how to plant seeds and till soil

cheap Every food crop needs cultivated soil, and the Valheim cultivator is the only tool that makes it. You craft it at the Forge from 5 Corewood and 5 Bronze once you've picked up both. It has 200 durability at level 1 (400 and 600 after upgrades), and each use costs 1 durability.

How to plant seeds in Valheim:

  • Equip the Cultivator and choose Cultivate to turn grass into dark tilled soil.
  • Open the Cultivator menu again and pick the crop. The menu shows only the seeds or plants you carry.
  • Place the crop on the tilled soil. Its name shows a status until it's fully grown: Healthy means it is growing.

Carrots, Turnips and Onions are grown from seeds. Barley, Flax, Jotun puffs and Magecap are planted directly from the crop itself, so keep a stack back when you harvest. To make more seeds, plant the Seed-carrot, Seed-turnip or Seed-onion option from a whole vegetable. Each one grows into 3 seeds instead of food.

Which crop grows where: the crop table

free This is the wiki's crop data (Cultivator, crop and seed pages, checked 20 October 2026). Grow times are real-time minutes. All of them need tilled soil and an open sky.

Where the seeds come from, per the wiki:

  • Valheim carrot seeds lie on the ground in the Black Forest.
  • Valheim turnip seeds come from yellow-flowered turnip plants in the Swamp. They're rarer than carrot seeds because so much of the Swamp is water.
  • Valheim onion seeds are in chests in Mountain towers and abandoned cabins. Coral cod can also drop 1 or 2.
  • Barley and Flax grow in Fuling village plots in the Plains. Flax is the rarer one, so replant it as soon as you find some.

The wiki disagrees with itself on a few numbers. The Jotun puffs page says 1.6 m spacing, while the Cultivator table says 1 m. Plant puffs 1.6 m apart and you can't go wrong. The Vineberry seeds page gives 100 to 200 seconds to grow, while the Cultivator table says 200 to 300.

The Mistlands corner: Jotun puffs and Magecap

setup Valheim Jotun puffs and Valheim Magecap are the reason the farm sits on the border. Both are gathered wild in the Mistlands and replanted with the Cultivator. Each planting yields 3, and neither grows anywhere else. In the video, the planted puffs show up as "Jotun Puffs Primordia" while they grow.

  • Give them room. Magecap needs 1.6 m. Use the same for Jotun puffs (see the wiki note above).
  • Watch the rocks. The wiki warns that the huge Mistlands rocks can block the sky. In the video, a puff planted under a tree gets "Needs an open sky".
  • Harvest by hand. The wiki says the Scythe doesn't work on Jotun puffs or Magecap, so walk the mushroom rows yourself.

Turnips are the one vegetable that grows in the Mistlands too. If the Mistlands corner is bigger than you need for mushrooms, fill the rest with turnips.

Finding the exact biome line with a test plant

free The biome border isn't drawn on the ground, but you can find it to within a step. The video shows two ways:

  • Look at the soil. Tilled Mistlands soil looks slightly glossier than tilled Plains soil, so the line often shows once you've cultivated across it.
  • Plant a test crop and read its label. Put a Jotun puff down and walk it towards the Plains. Where the label changes to "Can't grow in this environment", you've crossed the line. In the video, two puffs a short step apart get different results: one is fine, the next can't grow.

If a crop lands on the wrong side, just destroy it and replant it a step back. Then mark the line with a path or a row of stones so you don't have to test again.

The Plains side: barley, flax and vegetables

grind Everything except the two mushrooms goes on the Plains side. That makes this one field your Valheim barley farm, Valheim flax farm and vegetable patch at the same time. In the video, Flax planted a step over the line into the Mistlands shows "Can't grow in this environment". Barley does the same. Plant Plains crops from the Plains side and stop at the line.

  • Barley goes through the Windmill for Barley flour. Barley is also an ingredient of Yggdrasil porridge and Barley wine base.
  • Flax goes through the Spinning wheel for Linen thread.
  • Carrots and Onions grow fine here and in Meadows or Black Forest bases too. Raise their seeds here so you only maintain one field.
  • Turnips grow on either side of the line.

For what to cook from all of this, our Valheim food guide has the best recipes for each biome.

Crop spacing, open sky and why a plant is not growing

free If a plant is not growing, the Cultivator page lists exactly three causes, and the plant's label tells you which one it is:

LabelCauseFix
Can't grow in this environmentWrong biomeMove it to a biome on its list in the crop table
Needs more room to growSomething inside its spacing radius: another crop, a building piece, a rock (even one buried under terrain)Replant further away, or clear the object
Needs an open skyAnything above it: a roof, a tree, an overhang, at any heightClear the cover or plant elsewhere

For Valheim crop spacing, most crops need 1 m between plants. Magecap and Jotun puffs need 1.6 m, and Ashvine needs 3.6 m. The video's example is a Jotun puff planted under a tree. It shows "Needs an open sky" while the puffs around it are healthy.

About a Valheim greenhouse: a roofed greenhouse doesn't work. Any roof over a crop stops it, however high the roof is. The wiki points to the Shield generator instead. It blocks rain and incoming projectiles over the farm, the wiki recommends it for exactly this, and it runs on bone fragments or charred bone.

New 1.0 crops: oats, kale and Poteitr

setup Valheim 1.0 added three plantable crops from the Deep North: Oats, Kale and Poteitr. The wiki lists them in the 1.0 patch notes. Its Deep North page lists Kale seeds as a resource, but as of 20 October 2026 the wiki has no pages for the crops themselves. That means no wiki data on their biomes, grow times or spacing.

What the video shows is enough to plan a Valheim farm 1.0 layout around. An oat plant labelled "Oat Straw (Healthy)" grows on the Plains side of this farm. The creator also names kale among the crops he grows here, but kale and Poteitr aren't shown with readable labels. Plant one of each first and read the label before you commit a whole row.

Seeds come from Deep North settlements. Our Deep North guide covers where to look. Oats are worth the effort. The wiki's Food page lists Oats and Oat flour in several 1.0 dishes, including Oatmeal and Meat in bread.

Vineberries on the farm fence

cheap The video doesn't plant Ashvine, but its fence is the ideal spot for it. Valheim vineberry clusters come from Ashvine, which you grow from Vineberry seeds. The wiki's rules for it:

  • It doesn't need the Ashlands. It grows in every biome except the Mountain and the Deep North, so it's fine in both the Plains and the Mistlands.
  • It needs a wall to climb. Plant it about 0.75 to 2 m from a flat built wall. The Cultivator page says fences and decorative panels count as walls. It can't turn corners and won't grow under an overhang.
  • It refills by itself. Each ripe cluster gives 3 Vineberries, plus a 20% chance of 1 to 4 seeds. The vine grows new clusters every 3 hours 20 minutes and never needs replanting.

That makes the field's perimeter fence a free trellis for Ashlands-tier food.

Beehives belong on the Plains side

cheap You can keep bees on this farm, but only on the Plains side. The video's creator first put hives on the Mistlands side and they wouldn't work. On the Plains side, his hive shows "The bees are happy". The wiki agrees. Bees are happy only in the Meadows, Black Forest or Plains, and only with less than 60% cover over the hive.

Each hive costs 10 Wood and a Queen bee. It makes one Honey roughly every 20 real minutes and holds up to 4. Unlike crops, a hive doesn't need tilled soil, so put the hives along the edge of the Plains field.

Sap extractors on the ancient roots

setup The ancient roots in the Mistlands corner are the farm's other crop. A Sap extractor placed on a root pulls 1 Sap every 60 seconds and holds up to 10. It costs 10 Yggdrasil wood, 5 Black metal and 1 Dvergr extractor, and it must be within range of a Workbench.

The catch, per the wiki, is that a root refills much more slowly than an extractor drains it: 1 Sap every 6 minutes 40 seconds. Several extractors on one root just empty it faster. Spreading them across more roots helps. A border farm with two roots, like the video's, roughly doubles your sap, and you collect it on the same trip as your crops.

The video builds a small hut right on top of a root. It works, but the creator warns that one Mistlands flyer can wreck it in seconds. For sturdier builds, see our Valheim building tips.

Farm design, harvesting and the Farming skill

grind Once the line is found, the rest of the Valheim farm design is up to you. The video's version is a fenced field with the root and its extractors in the middle, mushrooms on one side and Plains crops on the other. The creator notes you could keep extending it along the border. Some tips:

  • Fence the field. It keeps wandering creatures out of the rows, and the fence doubles as an Ashvine trellis.
  • Use a Scythe for the Plains crops. You make it at a level 2 Forge from a Scythe handle (a trader item added with the Bog Witch update) and 6 Silver. It speeds up harvesting, but it doesn't work on Jotun puffs or Magecap.
  • Hand-pick or scythe, don't smash. Area attacks from a sledge or atgeir do harvest Barley and Flax, but the wiki says they give no Farming XP and skip the bonus-yield roll.
  • Level the Farming skill. The wiki's Skills table puts the top-level bonus at a 25% chance of extra harvest, half the stamina and durability cost on the Cultivator and a longer, cheaper Scythe swing. You gain XP from every Cultivator use, every Scythe swing and every crop picked by hand.
  • Replant as you harvest. Barley, Flax and the mushrooms are replanted from the harvest itself, so a farm that yields 2 or 3 per planting keeps growing as long as you keep some back.

If you also want a steady meat supply, a boar farm pairs well with this field.

How this guide was fact-checked

  • From the Valheim wiki on Fandom (pages read 20 October 2026; live patch 1.0.20): crop biomes, grow times (4,000 to 5,000 seconds), yields and spacing from the Cultivator page (last edited 24 February 2026, before 1.0) and the Barley, Flax, Carrot, Turnip, Onion, seed, Jotun puffs and Magecap pages. Also from the wiki: the three "won't grow" statuses, the Cultivator and Scythe recipes, Ashvine and Vineberry rules, Beehive biomes and output, Sap extractor rates, Shield generator farming note, Cloudberry respawn, Farming skill bonuses and the 1.0 patch notes listing Kale, Oats and Poteitr.
  • From the video's own footage: the Plains–Mistlands border site, the glossier Mistlands soil, the "Can't grow in this environment" labels on Jotun puffs and Flax across the line, "Needs an open sky" under a tree, "Oat Straw (Healthy)" on the Plains side, "The bees are happy" on the Plains side, and the hut and extractors on the root.
  • Corrections and gaps: the video names kale as growing on this farm, but only oats are shown with a readable label, so kale and Poteitr biomes are unconfirmed. The wiki has no Kale, Oats or Poteitr pages yet. The wiki gives Jotun puffs both 1 m and 1.6 m spacing, and Vineberry seeds both 100 to 200 s and 200 to 300 s; we use the safer number and name both. The aggro-preventing crown the video mentions has no wiki page. The Cultivator table also lists the Ashlands for Carrots and Onions, but its own footnote says crops that can't take heat only grow there under an active Shield generator, so we left the Ashlands out of the crop table.

What this guide doesn't answer

  • Exact seeds with a ready-made border spot: world seeds differ and the video doesn't give one, so you'll need to scout your own map.
  • Kale and Poteitr growing rules: not shown in the video and not on the wiki yet; test one plant first.
  • Full recipes for every crop: that's the job of the Valheim food guide.
  • Raising Lox, hens or other animals on the farm: taming is a separate topic; the boar farm guide covers the basics.
  • Defending the farm from raids: event rules and base defense are outside a farming layout guide.

Frequently asked

Where can you grow every crop in Valheim?

On the border between the Plains and the Mistlands. Barley and Flax grow only in the Plains, Jotun puffs and Magecap grow only in the Mistlands, and Carrots, Turnips and Onions all grow in the Plains. Till a field across the line, put the two mushrooms on the Mistlands side and everything else on the Plains side.

Why is my plant not growing in Valheim?

Read the plant's label. "Can't grow in this environment" means the wrong biome, "Needs more room to grow" means another crop, building piece or rock is inside its spacing radius, and "Needs an open sky" means a roof, tree or overhang is above it at any height. Healthy means it is growing normally.

How far apart should you plant crops in Valheim?

Most crops need 1 m between plants. Magecap needs 1.6 m and the Jotun puffs page also says 1.6 m (the Cultivator table says 1 m, so 1.6 m is the safe choice). Ashvine for Vineberries needs 3.6 m and must be planted about 0.75 to 2 m from a wall or fence.

Can you grow crops in a greenhouse in Valheim?

No. Any roof over a crop gives it "Needs an open sky", however high the roof is. The wiki suggests a Shield generator instead: it blocks rain and incoming projectiles over the farm and runs on bone fragments or charred bone.

Where do you plant kale, oats and Poteitr in Valheim 1.0?

The wiki has no pages for the three Deep North crops yet. In the video, an oat plant grows healthy on the Plains side of a Plains and Mistlands border farm. Kale and Poteitr aren't shown with labels, so plant one of each first and check that it says Healthy before you plant a full row.
