🎯 The core idea
Top lane is a long solo lane where you win by spending health and minions well. Pick a champion type you understand, control the wave (crash, freeze or slow push), ward the river pixel brush, and trade only in clear windows. Finish the 1,200-point top role quest for level 20, bonus XP and a free Unleashed Teleport, then use side lane pressure to pull the enemy apart.
- free costs nothing
- cheap small cost
- setup needs preparation
- grind pays off slowly
- skip the thing to stop doing
What top lane asks of you in Season 2026
This guide on how to play top lane in League of Legends builds on a short April 2026 video from the channel 3 Minute League of Legends, recorded on patch 26.8. Its laning basics still hold, but the top role quest was rebalanced in patches 26.9, 26.12 and 26.19, so every quest and Teleport number below comes from the official League of Legends Wiki and the patch notes up to 26.21, and each place where the video is now out of date is named in the text.
Top is one of the two long side lanes, and you play it alone. Your jungler visits less often than bot lane gets help, your support never comes, and a lost trade can snowball because nobody is there to cover. That is why top laners are the most self-reliant champions in the game, and why so many players search for top lane tips 2026 after a bad lane: most of what decides it is in your hands.
Your jobs change with the phase of the game:
| Phase | Your main job | What usually decides it |
|---|---|---|
| Laning (0 to about 14:00) | Gold, experience and quest points | Wave control, trades, vision |
| Early objectives | Voidgrubs, Rift Herald, sometimes Dragon | Who has lane priority |
| Mid and late game | Side lane control, split pushing or grouping | Teleport, map awareness |
Players type the role as "toplane" as often as "top lane"; it is the same lane, and the same lol toplane tips apply either way.
Top lane champion types: tank vs bruiser vs tank-killer
free The video splits top laners into three types. Tanks absorb pressure and survive bad situations. Fighters (bruisers) win by fighting their way out. A third group exists specifically to beat those two, usually with percent-health damage or kiting. The icons on its slide are all tanks: Malphite, Ornn, Sion and Shen.
| Type | Plays like | Examples (ours, not the video's) | Usual weakness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tank | Survives lane, wins teamfights with engage | Malphite, Ornn, Sion, Shen | Low kill pressure, can be split-pushed on |
| Fighter (bruiser) | Wins extended trades, strong side lane | Darius, Garen, Mordekaiser | Kited or out-sustained |
| Tank-killer | Shreds health bars, punishes tanks | Fiora, Vayne, Gwen | Bursts or crowd control from fighters |
Tank vs bruiser in top lane mostly comes down to who wants the long fight: bruisers want extended trades early, tanks want to reach the late game and engage for the team. That is the core of top lane matchups and top lane counters. A tank-killer counters tanks; a fighter with crowd control often counters the tank-killer; a tank shuts down a fighter that relies on auto-attacks. Learn which category your champion falls into before you learn individual matchups.
The video adds a second axis: some top laners are better teamfighters and some are better split pushers. It does not change how you play the lane, but it changes your plan after it.
The best top laners for beginners are the forgiving ones. Our beginner champions guide picks Malphite first, with Garen and Mordekaiser as backups, because their kits work even when you play them imperfectly.
How to win top lane: gold, experience and the quest
free In the laning phase the video sets three goals: maximize gold, maximize experience and finish your quest as soon as possible. All three come from the same two skills, keeping the wave where you can farm it safely and trading only when it pays off.
How to win top lane is rarely about a solo kill. A lane where you have 20 more CS, never missed an experience wave and finished your quest first is a won lane even at 0/0. Plates count too: every lane turret has five plates, and each one grants 120 local gold to the champions who destroy it.
Hard pushing: when to crash the wave
cheap Hard pushing (crashing) means killing the enemy minions as fast as you can so your wave runs into their turret. Do it when you want to:
- recall and buy items without losing minions,
- have priority to roam or join a fight or objective,
- deny the enemy your minions while they are not in lane.
The cost is position. A fully pushed top laner stands far from their own turret, which is how most top lane deaths happen to ganks or simply being run down. And if you fail to crash the wave fully under the enemy turret, the opponent can set up a freeze on the bounce. Season 2026 helps a little: after recalling, the Homeguard speed buff reaches much further down your lane, so a crash-and-recall loses less time than it used to.
How to freeze top lane
setup A freeze holds the wave just outside your own turret range. The video's rule is that the enemy wave should have three or four more minions than yours, so it keeps pushing toward you but never quite reaches the turret. Last hit only.
While it holds, you farm safely, your jungler can punish anyone who walks up, and the opponent has to overextend to get CS. The downside, as the video notes, is that you give up priority: the enemy can roam freely while you babysit the wave, and some champions break a freeze easily by clearing your minions.
Freezes are harder to keep in 2026 than in older guides, because minions now deal bonus damage to each other and waves push faster when one team out-levels the other. Our wave management guide covers that change and the full top lane wave management toolkit, including how to hold a wave and when to give it up.
Slow pushing to set up recalls and roams
setup Slow pushing means last hitting only, so your wave grows a little each time and several waves stack into one big crash at the enemy turret. The video calls it one of the best defaults, and the payoff is large: when the big wave crashes, you have plenty of time to recall or roam, and the minion pile makes it hard for the opponent to fight you near it.
The catch is time. A slow push needs several waves (waves spawn every 30 seconds from 0:30, and every 25 seconds from 14:00), so start it early. A good habit is to slow push the two waves before you want to recall, crash on the third, and back.
Warding top lane and how to deal with ganks
cheap The video's warding advice is short: always ward the river pixel brush at the top end of the river, and buy a Control Ward for your own jungle entrance. In Season 2026 that pixel brush is also a Faelight, so a ward there gets 45 seconds of bonus vision. Patch 26.3 shrank that bonus area so it stops before the Scuttle pad, so do not expect it to show the whole river. Our warding guide maps every Faelight.
A Control Ward costs 75 gold, sees 900 units, and reveals and disables enemy Stealth Wards in range. You can carry two and have one placed at a time.
How to deal with ganks top lane comes down to three habits:
- Know where the jungler is. If they showed bot side at 3:30, the next top gank is likely around 4:30 to 5:00. Our jungle guide explains how junglers path and when they come.
- Push only when you have vision. With no ward up, keep the wave on your side.
- Hold your escape. A Flash or dash kept for the gank matters more than one more trade.
Top lane trading: when to fight your opponent
free Top lane trading is the idea that your health bar is a resource. Every fight costs you health and costs them health; a good trade is one where you finish ahead. The video lists the windows to look for:
| Trading window | Why it works |
|---|---|
| You hit level 2, 3 or 6 first | One extra ability or your ultimate |
| They use abilities on minions | Their cooldowns are down for several seconds |
| They are low on health or mana | They cannot answer the trade |
| You have an item advantage | Your stats win the exchange |
After the fight you want to be in a better position: usually more health, or enough of a lead to kill them in the next fight. If the trade leaves you lower and with no wave advantage, it was a bad trade even if you dealt more damage.
The top role quest in 2026: points, rewards and Teleport
grind The video's point is right: you complete the top role quest just by playing the game, since everything above earns points. Its slide lists the point sources, and most still match the wiki: 15 per champion takedown, 2 per minion, 50 per turret, 40 per plate and 30 per epic monster. The quest needs 1,200 points.
One line on the slide is wrong for the current patch. It says you gain 1 point every 3 seconds while top; per the wiki, that is the rate outside your lane. In lane you earn 7.5 points every 5 seconds (90 a minute) from 1:05. Its note that minions and turrets in other lanes give half points is also out of date: since patch 26.9 the penalty starts at 75% and shrinks as your quest progress rises. Patch 26.9 also added roam grace (time in lane banks up to 60 seconds of roaming at the in-lane rate) and a 12-second pause in passive points after every recall.
Passive points alone finish the quest at roughly 14:25; with normal farming, plates and a takedown it lands around 12 to 14 minutes. The reward, checked against the wiki and patch 26.21:
| Top quest reward | Current value |
|---|---|
| Instant experience | 600 XP |
| Bonus experience | 11% from all sources, plus 80 XP per champion takedown |
| Level cap | 20 instead of 18 |
| No Teleport taken | Free Unleashed Teleport in the Role Quest slot, 390-second cooldown |
| Teleport taken | 35% max health shield for 10 seconds after the channel, Unleashed Teleport 30 seconds shorter |
How to use Teleport top lane in 2026: the summoner spell has a 3-second channel, a 300-second cooldown, and turns into Unleashed Teleport at 10:00. It lands on an allied turret, minion or ward. Because the quest hands you a Teleport anyway, many top laners now take Ignite or Ghost instead to win lane, as Riot itself noted in the 26.19 patch notes. Our role quests guide covers the full point system and every patch change.
Top lane objectives: Scuttle, Voidgrubs, Herald and Dragon
setup Your other early obligation is objectives, and the video ranks them in a sensible order: help your jungler with Rift Scuttler if needed, push out for Voidgrubs and Rift Herald, and only sometimes join a Dragon, when you can Teleport back to lane after.
| Objective | Spawns | Top lane's role |
|---|---|---|
| Rift Scuttler | 2:55 (moved from 3:30 in patch 26.01) | Help only if your wave is safe |
| Dragon | 5:00 | Rarely; needs Teleport or a crashed wave |
| Voidgrubs | 8:00, once; gone at 14:45 | Push first, then rotate; top side fights |
| Rift Herald | 15:00, once; gone at 19:45 | Push first, then rotate |
| Baron Nashor | 20:00 | Group or pressure the opposite lane |
Every epic monster takedown is worth 30 quest points wherever it happens, so a top laner who joins a grub fight from a pushed wave loses very little. One who leaves an unpushed wave loses minions, plates and passive points. "Push out first" is the whole rule.
Side lane control in the mid and late game
setup After laning, the video gives top a clear job: side lane control. Go to a side lane and push the wave as far as you safely can, usually just past the river. That wave then pressures the enemy's turret while you are free to act.
Safe distance depends on vision and on how many enemies are missing. With your team's wards in the enemy jungle you can push further; with three enemies off the map, stop at the river. This is most of what top lane macro means: always know whether the wave you just pushed buys your team time or puts you in danger.
How to split push in LoL, or when to group instead
setup From a pushed side lane you have two choices, and the video draws both arrows. You can group with your team to look for fights and objectives, or keep pushing, which is split pushing: you force the enemy to answer you before you take turrets.
How to split push lol well:
- Push while your team stands near an objective, so one or two enemies must leave to stop you.
- Leave when more enemies come than you can fight; your team should then have the numbers advantage.
- Keep Teleport or Unleashed Teleport up so you can join the fight your pressure created.
Split pushers (Fiora, Darius) should split; teamfighting tanks (Malphite, Ornn) usually do more by grouping with the team. The top quest's 80 bonus XP per takedown since patch 26.9 also rewards top laners who join fights, not only pure split pushers.
Top lane mistakes that cost games
skip The slide above lists the two downsides of a hard push: unsafe positions and a wave that can help your opponent. Most top lane mistakes lol players make come from the same habits:
- Pushing with no ward. Crashing into the enemy turret with the pixel brush dark is the most common way to give a gank.
- Trading on equal terms. Fighting when neither side has a window costs health for nothing.
- Leaving lane for a lost cause. A Dragon fight you cannot reach costs minions and quest points; leaving lane early in the quest also costs more, since the out-of-lane penalty is biggest then.
- Wasting Teleport. Teleporting to a fight already lost, or using it only to walk back to lane, leaves you without it when your side lane pressure creates a real fight.
- Never switching between split and group. Split all game and your team fights 4v5; group all game and nobody pressures the side.
How to climb as top laner: pick two or three champions from one type, learn their main matchups, and review your deaths for the mistakes above. Our ranked climbing guide covers the rest of the plan, and the mid lane guide shows how the neighbouring lane plays its own quest. For everything else new this year, see our Season 2026 changes guide; players still searching for a top lane guide season 16 will find the same patch here, since Season 2026 and "Season 16" are one and the same.
How this guide was fact-checked
- From the official League of Legends Wiki: Teleport and Unleashed Teleport (3-second channel, 300-second cooldown, upgrade at 10:00, 390-second free quest Teleport, 35% shield for 10 seconds), the top role quest point values, penalty and roam grace, Minion (waves at 0:30, 25-second waves from 14:00), Turret (five plates, 120 local gold each), Control Ward (75 gold, one placed per player), Rift Scuttler (2:55 since 26.01), Voidgrub (8:00, once, despawn 14:45) and Rift Herald (15:00, despawn 19:45, Baron at 20:00).
- From the official patch notes: 26.9 (top XP changed to 11% plus 80 per takedown, quest penalty and roam grace), 26.12 (Teleport shield), 26.19 (free Teleport 390 seconds, Riot's note on top laners skipping Teleport) and 26.3 (smaller pixel brush Faelight). Patches 26.20 and 26.21 have no top quest changes.
- From the video's own screen: the champion type slide, the wave control slides, the pixel brush ward, the trading windows and the quest point list.
- Corrections to the video: the 1-point-every-3-seconds rate on its quest slide is the out-of-lane rate, not the in-lane rate (7.5 every 5 seconds); the out-of-lane minion and turret penalty is 75% shrinking with progress, not a flat half. The video does not give quest reward numbers; the table above uses current values.
- Our own additions: the example champions per type (except the four tank icons on the video's slide), the objective table, the split-push checklist and the mistake list are general guidance, not from the video. The quest completion times are our arithmetic from the wiki's rates.

Frequently asked
How do you play top lane in League of Legends?
Pick a champion type you understand (tank, fighter or tank-killer), keep the wave where you can farm it safely by crashing, freezing or slow pushing, ward the river pixel brush, and trade only in clear windows such as reaching level 2, 3 or 6 first. Finish the top role quest, then use side lane pressure to split push or group with your team.
What does the top lane role quest give in 2026?
The top quest needs 1,200 points. It gives 600 XP instantly, 11% bonus experience plus 80 XP per champion takedown, and raises your level cap to 20. Without Teleport you get a free Unleashed Teleport on a 390-second cooldown; with Teleport it shields you for 35% max health for 10 seconds after the channel and Unleashed Teleport's cooldown drops by 30 seconds.
How do you freeze top lane?
Keep three or four more enemy minions than allied minions on your side of the lane, just outside your turret's range, and only last hit. The bigger enemy wave keeps pushing toward you without reaching the turret. You farm safely while the enemy must walk up to get CS, but you give up priority to roam, and freezes break faster in 2026 because minions deal bonus damage to each other.
Should top laners still take Teleport in 2026?
Often not. The top role quest hands you a free Unleashed Teleport with a 390-second cooldown at around 12 to 14 minutes, so many top laners take Ignite or Ghost to win lane instead, as Riot noted in the 26.19 patch notes. Teleport is still useful if you want it before the quest finishes; the quest then adds a 35% max health shield for 10 seconds on arrival.
How do you deal with ganks in top lane?
Ward the river pixel brush at the top end of the river, where a ward also gets 45 seconds of Faelight bonus vision, and put a Control Ward at your jungle entrance. Track where the enemy jungler last showed, only push when you have vision, and keep Flash or your dash for the gank instead of spending it on a trade.
