League of Legends Role Quests: Rewards for Every Role

How League of Legends role quests work in Season 2026: the points each role needs, how the lane penalty and roam grace work, and what top, jungle, mid, ADC and support get for finishing. Updated for patch 26.9 and later changes.

🎯 The core idea

Every Summoner's Rift role in Season 2026 has a role quest. Laners earn points from passive time in lane, minions, plates, turrets and takedowns; junglers feed pet treats; supports earn quest gold. Finishing pays off big: Teleport and level 20 for top, Primal Smite for jungle, free Tier 3 boots plus 8% AD and AP for mid, a seventh item slot for ADC, and a free support upgrade with 40-gold Control Wards.

  • free costs nothing
  • cheap small cost
  • setup needs preparation
  • grind pays off slowly
  • skip the thing to stop doing

This League of Legends role quests guide starts from Polypuff's January 2026 season overview, recorded on the day patch 26.1 went live. Role quests have been rebalanced several times since then, most of all in patch 26.9 (Season 2). Every number below comes from the official League of Legends Wiki and the patch notes up to 26.21, and each place where the video's 26.1 numbers no longer apply is named in the text.

How do role quests work in League of Legends

free Role quests are tied to the position you are assigned in champion select. Queue mid and you get the mid quest; swap roles in champ select and the quest swaps with you. They exist in every Summoner's Rift queue with assigned positions, and custom Summoner's Rift lobbies now make you pick a role for the same reason.

The quest bar sits next to your items. When it fills, you get your role's reward right away: a particle with your role icon appears over your health bar, everyone who can see you hears the sound cue, and your team chat announces it. If the reward is something you can cast (top lane's Unleashed Teleport), it lives in the Role Quest slot on the V key by default.

Jungle and support worked like this in 2025 already. The new part of Season 2026 is that top, mid and bot lane got quests too, and that the three laner quests are built around one idea: stay in your lane.

RolePoints neededMain way to progress
Top1,200Time in lane, minions, plates, turrets
Jungle35 treatsFeeding your jungle pet
Mid1,350Lane time, minions, plates, plus damage to champions
Bot (ADC)1,350Lane time, minions (3 points each), plates
Support800Gold earned through the support item quest

Role quest progress: where the points come from

grind The three laner quests share one point system. From 1:05 you earn quest points passively: 1 point every 3 seconds anywhere on the map, raised to 7.5 points every 5 seconds while you are in your own lane. The video shows the 26.1 rate of 8 per 5 seconds; patch 26.9 trimmed it to 1.5 points per second.

ActionTopMidBot
Passive, in your lane90 per minute90 per minute90 per minute
Passive, outside your lane20 per minute20 per minute20 per minute
Minion kill (in your lane)223
Turret plate (your lane's turrets)404040
Turret takedown (your lane)505050
Champion takedown152515
Epic monster takedown303030
Extranone3% of damage to champions (melee) or 1.5% (ranged)none

Two numbers matter most. First, passive points alone finish a quest: from 1:05, 90 points a minute completes top at roughly 14:25 and mid or bot at roughly 16:05 if you never leave lane. Second, the point values for minions, plates and turrets drop when you earn them outside your lane, while champion takedowns and epic monsters (Dragon, Voidgrubs, Rift Herald, Baron) count in full wherever you are.

The wiki's own time-value table still uses the old 96-points-a-minute rate, so its 13:35 and 15:08 completion times are slightly early for the current patch.

The lane penalty, roam grace and recall rule

setup This is why the video says lane swaps are over. Outside your assigned lane, passive gain falls from 90 to 20 points a minute, and minions, plates and turrets give reduced points. Since patch 26.9 that penalty is 75% at the start of the quest and shrinks to nothing as your quest progress rises, so leaving lane at 90% progress costs far less than leaving at 20%.

Patch 26.9 also made roaming possible without wrecking your progress:

  • Roam grace: after level 3, every 2 minutes you spend in lane bank 1 minute of roaming (up to 60 seconds) during which you keep earning the in-lane passive rate.
  • Recall pause: passive points stop for 12 seconds after every recall, so a recall costs you about 18 points on top of walking time.
  • Bigger lane zone: "in lane" now means anywhere in your lane outside your base. In 26.1 it meant near or past your outermost turret, which is what the hand-drawn zone in the video shows.

That last change makes two of the video's tips obsolete. The bush bug it describes (only the bottom half of the top-lane bush counting) came from the old zone, and its remark that proxy farming behind the enemy turret keeps the passive buff now matters less, because the whole lane counts.

skip Swapping top and mid for a bad matchup in the first 10 minutes. Both players fall behind on their quests, and neither reward comes on time.

Top lane role quest: Teleport, XP and level 20

grind Top lane needs 1,200 points, the lowest of the three laners. The reward is the strongest late game swing in the patch:

Top lane rewardCurrent value
Instant experience600 XP
Bonus experience11% from all sources
Takedown bonus80 extra XP per champion takedown
Level cap20 instead of 18
No Teleport takenFree Unleashed Teleport in the Role Quest slot, 390-second cooldown
Teleport takenTeleport shields you for 35% max health for 10 seconds on arrival, and Unleashed Teleport's cooldown drops by 30 seconds

Three numbers in the video are out of date. It says 12.5% bonus XP; patch 26.9 changed that to 11% plus 80 XP per takedown, which favours top laners who join teamfights over pure split pushers. It says a 7-minute free Teleport; patch 26.19 cut that to 390 seconds. And it says the Teleport shield is 30% for 30 seconds; patch 26.12 made it 35% for 10 seconds. The video's joke about teleporting in front of an ally just for the shield is less useful with a 10-second shield, and the wiki notes the shield no longer applies if the channel is interrupted.

The top lane role quest teleport is why many top laners now skip Teleport for a combat summoner spell, as Riot itself noted in the 26.19 patch notes: the quest hands you a Teleport at around 12 to 14 minutes anyway.

Jungle role quest: pet treats and Primal Smite

grind The jungle role quest is the 2025 pet quest with lower thresholds. You feed your jungle pet treats by clearing camps, and Smite grows in three stages. The video's numbers here are still correct according to the wiki:

Treats fedSpellDamage to monsters
0Smite600 true damage
15Unleashed Smite1,000 true damage, can slow champions
35 (quest complete)Primal Smite1,400 true damage, also hits nearby monsters

Finishing at 35 treats also gives 10 bonus gold and 10 bonus XP per jungle camp, and 4% bonus movement speed in the jungle or river (8% out of combat). Primal Smite adds your pet's passive: Gustwalker's Gait, Mosstomper's Courage or Scorchclaw's Slash.

The jungle quest has no lane penalty, so junglers are free to path anywhere. That is also why the video's advice "unless you're jungle or support, do not roam" holds.

Mid lane role quest progress: damage counts

free Mid lane needs 1,350 points. It is the only quest that rewards trading: you earn points equal to 3% of the damage you deal to champions on a melee champion, or 1.5% on a ranged one. A melee mid who deals 1,000 damage in a trade earns 30 points, the same as an epic monster. Champion takedowns are also worth 25 points for mid, against 15 for top and bot.

One early-game catch applies only to mid: until level 3, minion kills outside the mid lane give you 25% less gold and experience. In the video this penalty is shown on the 26.1 slide and described as something that starts after you finish the quest; the wiki lists it as an early-game rule during the quest.

If you want mid lane role quest progress faster, the order is simple: stay in lane for the passive, last-hit every minion, and look for trades that cost your opponent more health than they cost you.

Mid quest rewards: Tier 3 boots and 8% AD and AP

free Completing the mid quest upgrades your Tier 2 boots into exclusive Tier 3 boots at no cost. If you finish without Tier 2 boots, they upgrade the moment you buy them. Since Feats of Strength were removed in 26.1, only the mid laner can get these:

Tier 2 bootsMid-only Tier 3 upgrade
Berserker's GreavesGunmetal Greaves
Boots of SwiftnessSwiftmarch
Gluttonous GreavesImmortal Path
Ionian Boots of LucidityCrimson Lucidity
Mercury's TreadsChainlaced Crushers
Plated SteelcapsArmored Advance
Sorcerer's ShoesSpellslinger's Shoes

The second half of the reward is where the video is outdated. It describes an empowered recall every 5 minutes, shortened by 1 minute per takedown. Patch 26.9 removed the empowered recall and replaced it with 6% bonus AD and 6% bonus AP, and patch 26.11 raised that to 8% each. The current mid quest rewards in LoL are boots plus a flat damage boost, not faster resets.

ADC role quest: 300 gold and the seventh item slot

grind The bot lane quest also needs 1,350 points, but each minion is worth 3 points instead of 2, which makes it the most farm-driven quest. On completion the ADC gets:

  • 300 gold immediately.
  • 2 bonus gold per minion kill for the rest of the game.
  • 40 bonus gold per champion takedown (the video and its 26.1 slide show 50; patch 26.9 lowered it to 40).
  • A Role Quest slot reserved for boots. Any boots you own move there, so your six normal slots are free for six other items.

That last point is the ADC seventh item slot League of Legends players talk about (the 26.1 patch notes call it a 7th item slot): boots plus six full items. The video is right that the reward is modest at 15 minutes and huge in a 40-minute game, when the extra slot is a whole legendary item. Patch notes since then confirm bot laners have "significantly increased gold income thanks to role quests".

Support role quest: Control Ward slot and a free upgrade

cheap The video says nothing changed for support, and the core of the quest is the same as 2025: your support item earns gold through Shared Riches (hitting champions or turrets, or killing minions near an ally) and its gold-per-10-seconds stat. The support role quest needs 800 points, and you earn one point for each gold your support item makes through that quest. Completing it is what upgrades Runic Compass (which World Atlas turns into after its own first 400 gold) into Bounty of Worlds.

Shared Riches charge spent onWorld AtlasRunic Compass
Damaging a champion or turret18 points21 points
Killing a minion18 points21 points
Gold per 10 seconds3 points5 points

Rewards when the quest completes:

  • Runic Compass upgrades into Bounty of Worlds, which you can turn into Bloodsong, Celestial Opposition, Dream Maker, Solstice Sleigh or Zaz'Zak's Realmspike for free.
  • Control Wards cost 40 gold instead of 75.
  • Control Wards are stored in the Role Quest slot, not your inventory, so the support control ward slot never costs you an item slot. You can still carry 2 and place 1.

One change the video predates: patch 26.16 made supports pay for early roaming. Until level 5, minion kills outside bot lane give 33% less gold and experience, and that penalty also hits your support item's quest gold.

How to complete role quests faster

free The fastest way to complete a role quest is the boring one: be in your lane for the passive and kill everything. Some simple arithmetic shows how much farming adds. A mid or top laner averaging 8 CS a minute adds 16 points a minute on top of the 90 passive; a bot laner adds 24. That pulls a mid quest to roughly 13:50 and a bot quest to under 13:00, before a single plate or kill.

  • free Take plates. Each plate on your lane's turrets is worth 40 points, close to half a minute of passive. Plates no longer fall off at 14:00, so they stay a quest source all game.
  • free Join epic monsters. A takedown or assist on Dragon, Voidgrubs, Herald or Baron is 30 points with no lane penalty.
  • setup Bank grace before you roam. Two minutes in lane buys one minute away at full passive rate.
  • cheap Recall on purpose. Each recall pauses passive points for 12 seconds, so combine resets with item spikes instead of recalling twice.
  • skip Farming another lane's wave early. At low progress it is worth only a quarter of the points.

For mid, trades are points too, so a lane where you can poke safely finishes faster than a passive farm lane.

What changed in patch 26.9 and later

free The video was recorded for patch 26.1, so its reward slides are the original versions. Here is every role quest change since then, from the wiki and the official patch notes:

PatchChange
26.9In-lane passive 1.6 to 1.5 points a second; lane zone widened to the whole lane outside base
26.9Out-of-lane penalty on CS, plates and turrets now 75%, falling to 0% with progress
26.9Roam grace (1 minute per 2 in lane) and a 12-second passive pause after recall
26.9Top: 12.5% XP replaced by 11% XP plus 80 XP per takedown
26.9Mid: empowered recall removed, replaced by 6% bonus AD and AP
26.9Bot: takedown bonus gold 50 to 40
26.11Mid: bonus AD and AP raised to 8%
26.12Top: Teleport shield 35% max health for 10 seconds (was 30% for 30 seconds)
26.16Support: progress values changed; minion penalty outside bot lane now 33% until level 5
26.19Top: free Teleport cooldown 420 to 390 seconds; upgraded Unleashed Teleport 30 seconds shorter

Patches 26.20 and 26.21 did not change role quests. The other Season 2026 basics in the video still hold: Feats of Strength are gone, Baron spawns at 20:00, minions spawn at 0:30, and the Homeguard speed buff now reaches much further down your lane.

Role quests in ranked: lane swaps and objectives

setup Role quests change how a ranked game flows in the first 15 minutes. Laners are rewarded for staying put until their quest is done, so early lane swaps and long mid-lane roams cost real power. After completion the penalty is gone, which is why mid-game lane swaps around 14 to 16 minutes make more sense than swaps at 5 minutes.

Objective timers line up with this. Drake spawns at 5:00, Voidgrubs at 8:00, Rift Herald at 15:00 and Baron at 20:00, and every epic monster takedown counts as 30 quest points for anyone involved. A laner who joins a Voidgrub fight from a pushed wave loses little; one who leaves an unpushed wave loses minions, plates and passive time.

For how this fits into a full climbing plan (lane control, syncing with your jungler and mid-game lane swaps), see our League of Legends ranked climbing guide, which uses the same 2026 objective timers and quest penalty rules.

How this guide was fact-checked

  • From the official League of Legends Wiki: the Role Quests page (points required, point sources, lane penalty, roam grace, recall pause and all rewards), Smite (600/1,000/1,400 damage at 0/15/35 treats), Teleport (390-second free Teleport, 35% shield for 10 seconds), Control Ward, World Atlas, Runic Compass and Bounty of Worlds, Homeguard, and Turret (plates no longer removed at 14:00).
  • From the official patch notes: 26.9 (quest progression rework, top XP, mid empowered recall removed, bot gold), 26.11 (mid 8% AD and AP), 26.12 (Teleport shield), 26.16 (support penalties) and 26.19 (Teleport cooldown). Patches 26.20 and 26.21 were checked and have no role quest changes.
  • From the video's own screen: the 26.1 patch note slides and the hand-drawn top-lane zone, shown as the original version of each rule.
  • Corrections to the video: top XP is 11% plus 80 per takedown, not 12.5%; free Teleport is 390 seconds, not 7 minutes; the Teleport shield is 35% for 10 seconds, not 30% for 30; mid's empowered recall no longer exists and mid now gets 8% bonus AD and AP; ADC takedown gold is 40, not 50; in-lane passive is 7.5 per 5 seconds, not 8; the bush bug and turret-based lane zone were replaced in 26.9. The completion times in this guide are our arithmetic from the wiki's rates, not official numbers.

What this guide doesn't answer

  • Which champions or builds suit each quest: balance changes every two weeks, and builds belong in champion guides.
  • Aegis of Valor, autofill LP and ranked queue rules: covered in the video but not part of role quests.
  • Faelights, objective health and turret changes in detail: separate Season 2026 systems that deserve their own guide.
  • Swiftplay and other modes: role quests apply to Summoner's Rift queues with assigned positions; other modes are outside this guide.
  • Pro play lane swap strategy: this guide is written for solo queue.

Frequently asked

How do role quests work in League of Legends?

Each Summoner's Rift role gets a quest based on the position you are assigned in champion select. Top needs 1,200 points, mid and bot 1,350, support 800 (gold earned through the support item quest) and jungle 35 pet treats. Laners earn points passively from 1:05 (90 a minute in their own lane, 20 elsewhere) plus minions, turret plates, turrets, takedowns and epic monsters. When the bar next to your items fills, you get your role's reward immediately.

What are the role quest rewards for each role in LoL?

Top gets 600 XP, 11% bonus XP, 80 XP per takedown, a level cap of 20 and a free Unleashed Teleport (or a 35% max health shield on Teleport if you took it). Jungle gets Primal Smite (1,400 damage) and bonus gold, XP and movement speed in the jungle. Mid gets free Tier 3 boots and 8% bonus AD and AP. ADC gets 300 gold, extra gold per minion and takedown, and a boots slot that frees a seventh item. Support gets a free Bounty of Worlds upgrade and 40-gold Control Wards in their own slot.

Does the ADC role quest give a 7th item slot?

Yes, effectively. When the bot lane quest completes, your boots move into the Role Quest slot, leaving all six inventory slots for other items. You also get 300 gold, 2 bonus gold per minion kill and 40 bonus gold per champion takedown (lowered from 50 in patch 26.9). The slot matters most in long games where it becomes a full extra legendary item.

Can you lane swap or roam with role quests?

You can, but it slows your quest. Outside your lane passive points drop from 90 to 20 a minute and minions, plates and turrets are worth up to 75% less, a penalty that shrinks to zero as your progress rises. Since patch 26.9, every 2 minutes in lane banks 1 minute of roaming at full passive rate, and epic monster takedowns and champion takedowns count fully anywhere. Swaps after your quest is done cost nothing.

What is the fastest way to complete a role quest?

Stay in your own lane for the passive points, last-hit every minion (3 points each for bot, 2 for top and mid), take turret plates on your lane's turrets for 40 points each, and join Dragon, Voidgrubs, Herald and Baron for 30 points. Avoid extra recalls, since each one pauses passive points for 12 seconds. Mid laners also earn points from damage to champions, so safe trades speed up the mid quest. A laner farming 8 CS a minute finishes around 13 to 14 minutes.
