🎯 The core idea
Jungling in 2026 is about clearing your camps fast, ganking only when the lane and the vision allow it, and arriving first to Voidgrubs, drakes and Baron. Feed your pet 35 treats for Primal Smite, track where the enemy jungler started, and turn every lead into turrets. Faelights and cheaper Control Wards make lazy ganks fail, so planning beats aggression.
- free costs nothing
- cheap small cost
- setup needs preparation
- grind pays off slowly
- skip the thing to stop doing
This League of Legends jungle guide is for players who are new to the role or coming back for Season 2026. It starts from a January 2026 Team Liquid video in which Perry, a former pro jungler and coach, explains how the season changes hit junglers. That video covers what changed rather than the basics, so the clearing, ganking, tracking and objective fundamentals here come from the official League of Legends Wiki and the patch notes up to 26.21. Where the video's patch 26.1 numbers are wrong or have changed since, the text says so.
What a jungler actually does
free If you want to know how to jungle in League of Legends, start with the job itself. The jungler has no lane. You take Smite, buy a jungle pet, and earn gold and experience from the neutral monster camps between the lanes. The wiki lists three reasons the role exists: to collect jungle resources nobody else can use, to ambush laners from the fog of war (ganking), and to secure epic monsters with Smite.
How to play jungle in LoL comes down to balancing those three jobs every minute:
| Job | What it gives you | When it matters most |
|---|---|---|
| Clearing camps | Gold, XP, pet treats | Always; it is your income |
| Ganking and counter-ganking | Kills, lane leads, Flash burns | Levels 3 to 6, then whenever a lane is pushed |
| Objectives | Team buffs, turret damage, comeback XP | 8:00 Voidgrubs onward |
The wiki also splits junglers into two styles. Ganking junglers have crowd control and gap closers early and play for kills. Farming junglers clear faster and aim to carry later. Both are valid. Know which one your champion is before the game starts, because it decides your first clear.
Jungle pets, treats and the jungle role quest
setup Every jungler starts with one of three pets (450 gold each), and you must buy one before the shop lets you buy any other non-consumable item. Each large monster you kill feeds your pet one treat. The game also stores a bonus treat every 60 seconds from 1:30, and your next large monster kill uses it up. The jungle role quest 2026 version is simply the pet quest with lower thresholds:
| Treats | Smite upgrade | Damage to monsters |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | Smite | 600 true damage |
| 15 | Unleashed Smite | 1,000, can also hit champions for a 20% slow |
| 35 (quest complete) | Primal Smite | 1,400, also hits nearby monsters |
The video says Smite goes from "600 to 800" and from 1,200 to 1,400, and shows a "600 -> 800" graphic. That is wrong: patch 26.1 changed the tiers from 600/900/1,200 to 600/1,000/1,400, and the wiki confirms 1,000 for Unleashed Smite. Finishing the quest also gives +10 gold and +10 XP per large monster, plus 4% movement speed in the jungle and river (8% out of combat).
Which pet to pick:
| Pet | Final reward | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Scorchclaw Pup (red) | Charged attacks burn and slow champions | Ganking and dueling champions |
| Gustwalker Hatchling (blue) | Big movement speed in brushes and after large monster kills | Fast clears and roaming |
| Mosstomper Seedling (green) | A 200–360 shield that refreshes after each camp | Tanks and frontline fights |
Perry's point holds: the quest's movement speed means you no longer need Gustwalker just to get around, so red or green pet is often the better call. The full role quest rules for every role are in our League of Legends role quests guide.
Camp spawn and respawn timers
free Season 2026 starts the game 35 seconds sooner, and the video is right that camps spawn 35 seconds earlier than in 2025. These are the current timers from the wiki:
| Camp | First spawn | Respawn | Gold |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blue Sentinel, Red Brambleback | 0:55 | 5:00 | 90 each |
| Murk Wolves, Raptors | 0:55 | 2:15 | 55 and 35 for the big monster |
| Gromp, Krugs | 1:07 | 2:15 | 80 for Gromp; Krugs give the most of any camp |
| Rift Scuttler | 2:55 | 2:30 | 55–121 by level |
Two settings help a lot. The minimap already shows respawn timers for camps your team saw die. Turn on Settings > Interface > "Enable All Camp Timers" to see them as text all the time. Being at your keyboard at 0:00 also matters more now: with camps up at 0:55 there is very little time for level-one invades, as the video says.
Blue and red buffs are worth knowing in detail. Patch 26.1 removed the global buffs that used to appear late in the game. Instead, after the Elemental Rift arrives, a pet owner who kills a buff camp leaves a buff wisp on the ground for 60 seconds that one ally can pick up. Ping your mid laner or ADC to grab it. Patch 26.14 also raised Blue's ability haste to 10/15/20 at levels 1/6/11.
Clearing camps faster and safer
grind Patch 26.1 slowed early clears on purpose. Your pet's bonus damage to normal monsters dropped from 25% to 10%, but junglers now take only 50% damage from non-epic monsters, and the heal on each large monster kill was reworked. The video mentions this "small nerf" to clear speed and warns that off-meta junglers feel it most, which matches the patch notes.
What actually makes a clear fast:
- free Kite. Monsters attack slower than champions. Step away between their attacks and you take less damage, especially on ranged champions.
- free Stay inside the leash range. Pulling a camp out of its circle makes it reset to full health.
- cheap Ask for a leash only when you need one. The wiki notes leashes matter less than they used to and cost your top or bot laner lane time.
- skip Farming lane minions as a jungler. Your pet item cuts the XP you get from lane minions early on, and if your minion gold passes 40% of your monster gold, you get 13 less gold and half the XP per minion.
Your first camp always takes you to level 2. Mini Krugs and small Raptors give so little that you can skip them when you are in a hurry.
Jungle pathing basics for your first clear
setup Jungle pathing basics come down to one question: where do you want to be when the first fight happens? Monster levels are based on the average champion level when they spawn, so clearing camps in a tight loop lets them respawn sooner and gives you more income.
Three common first clears:
| Plan | What it looks like | Pick it when |
|---|---|---|
| Full clear | All six camps, then Scuttle or a gank | Your lanes have no gank setups, or your champion is a farmer |
| Three-camp | Buff, one small camp, other buff, then gank | One lane has crowd control and the enemy laner pushes |
| Invade | Start in the enemy jungle | Your team has early priority and you know where the enemy jungler is |
Before minions arrive, look at the lanes. Find the lane with a slow or stun and an enemy laner who cannot escape, and end your clear next to it. That is the core of LoL jungle fundamentals: a plan made at 0:30, not at 3:00.
The video adds one useful point for 2026. Because camps start earlier but Voidgrubs still spawn at 8:00, most junglers now reach level 6 or 7 before the grubs if they keep farming. Plan your clears so you are on the top side and healthy at that time.
How to gank in LoL, and when to gank
setup How to gank in LoL is mostly about choosing the right lane. A gank that fails costs you a camp cycle, so check these before walking into a lane:
| Good time to gank | Bad time to gank |
|---|---|
| The enemy laner is pushed past the middle of the lane | The wave is under the enemy turret |
| Your laner has crowd control or follow-up damage | Your laner is low and has no cooldowns |
| The enemy has used Flash or their escape | You can see a Control Ward or superward on your path |
| You know the enemy jungler is on the other side | The enemy jungler is unknown and could counter-gank |
| An objective spawns soon on that side | Your own camps are up and you are behind in levels |
When to gank LoL lanes in the first minutes: levels 3 to 4 after a short clear, or around level 6 when your ultimate turns a 2v1 into a sure kill. Walk in from an angle the enemy cannot see, and ping your laner before you arrive so they hold the enemy in place.
The video's view is that ganking will be harder in 2026 and that completing your quest makes clearing camps more valuable than before. Treat every gank as a trade: you are spending the gold and XP of a camp. If the lane will not win you more than that, keep farming.
Ganking around Faelights and Control Wards
skip Faelights are the main reason Perry calls jungle one of the weaker roles in 2026. A ward placed on a Faelight ring becomes a superward with a larger vision area. The video says that bonus vision stays "until the ward dies", but the patch notes and wiki say the bonus area lasts 45 seconds, while the ward itself keeps its normal vision. Patch 26.3 also shrank the pixel brush Faelights so they stop before the Scuttle pad and the epic monster pit entrance, after Riot saw early vision zoning junglers too much.
Supports matter too. Their role quest gives them Control Wards in the quest slot, and after they finish the quest those wards cost 40 gold. Expect more of your jungle to be lit up.
How to gank around this vision:
- Walk around wards instead of over them to clear them. Getting seen is worse than the ward staying up.
- Gank lanes after the enemy support has roamed or recalled, when vision is weakest.
- Use your own wards to clear a path. A Control Ward on the gank route is often worth 75 gold.
- Champions with long-range or global ultimates (the video names Nocturne, Pantheon and Briar) skip vision entirely. Evelynn and Fiddlesticks, who rely on unseen angles, struggle more.
Nocturne's ultimate was cut back in patch 26.19, so check the current patch before choosing him for map pressure.
Jungle tracking in League of Legends
setup Jungle tracking in League of Legends means guessing where the enemy jungler is from what you have seen. It is the skill that most separates good junglers from average ones, and it works for laners too.
Use these clues:
- Where they started. If an enemy laner was late to lane on one side, they probably leashed for their jungler there.
- Which camps are missing. The respawn timer appears on your minimap when you see a camp die, and you can get an exact timer by looking at a buff camp in the 60 seconds before it respawns, or a small camp in the last 10 seconds.
- Where they appeared. A gank at 3:15 bot side means they are not top side for the next 30 to 40 seconds.
- Scuttle and objectives. Both Scuttlers spawn at 2:55 and the drake at 5:00. The enemy jungler will usually try to be near one of them.
Warding a Faelight near your own base gate or in the river pixel brush at the right moment gives you a much bigger window into their path. Each time you spot them, ping it. Your laners then know they are safe to trade, and you know which side of the map you can play on.
How to counter jungle in LoL
cheap How to counter jungle in LoL: counter-jungling means taking an enemy camp to make up for one they took from you. The wiki's example: if they cleared your Raptors, you clear one of theirs to even it out.
Invade when at least one of these is true:
- You saw the enemy jungler on the other side of the map.
- Your laners on that side have lane priority and can walk in with you.
- Your champion wins the 1v1 at this level.
On Krugs, the wiki suggests killing the Ancient Krug and the Mini Krugs it splits into while leaving the medium Krug alive. You take most of the camp's value, and any Mini Krugs you could not finish despawn after a few seconds, so the enemy jungler cannot collect their experience either.
Do not invade blind. If you do not know where the enemy jungler is and your laners are pushed in, you can walk into a 2v1 and give away a kill plus your Smite.
Voidgrubs and Rift Herald
setup Jungle objective control in LoL starts at 8:00 with the Voidgrubs. Current rules:
| Objective | Spawn | Rules worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Voidgrubs | 8:00, only once | Three grubs, each spawning four Voidmites every 12 seconds in combat; they leave at 14:45 |
| Rift Herald | 15:00, only once | Leaves at 19:45; Baron spawns in the same pit at 20:00 |
Grubs give Touch of the Void, which burns enemy structures. A team with enough stacks also summons Voidmites when attacking turrets. In 2026 each grub's gold goes only to whoever kills it, and Riot lowered the camp's damage so laners can help take one and go back to lane.
The Herald is your best turret tool before 20:00. Its charge breaks turret plates and, since patch 26.6, also triggers Crystalline Overgrowth. Do it when the top or mid wave is pushing, so your laner can join the siege afterwards.
Dragons and Smite fights
setup The first drake spawns at 5:00 and the next one 5 minutes after each kill. After one team kills its fourth drake, the Elder Dragon takes its place with a 6-minute respawn.
Patch 26.1 made every epic monster tougher, mostly with more armor and magic resist. Riot says teams take 10–30% longer to kill them, and late drakes up to 35% longer. The video calls this "15% stronger", which is a simplification. The key detail is that Smite and your pet deal true damage, so junglers lose less damage than the rest of the team. The video's slide also shows drakes getting harder with each one your team already holds, which is why fewer games reach Dragon Soul.
Smite guide LoL basics for these fights:
- Smite has two charges, a 15-second cooldown between uses and 90 seconds to recharge each one. Never burn both before an objective spawns.
- Primal Smite (1,400) stops most laners' burst from stealing. Riot buffed Smite partly to protect junglers from Lux and Jinx ultimates.
- Count the monster's health against your Smite plus one more attack, not against Smite alone.
- Stealing pays more now. Losing teams get 25% more XP per level behind from Baron and dragons, up to double, so a well-timed steal can bring a game back.
Baron Nashor at 20 minutes
setup Atakhan and his Blood Roses were removed in patch 26.01, and Baron Nashor spawns at 20:00 with a 6-minute respawn. The video is right about the 20:00 spawn, but its "22 mins -> 20 mins" graphic is off: in 2025 Baron spawned at 25:00 in games that had Atakhan.
Baron's gold reward was cut in 2026 (+150 instead of +300), but the buff and experience stayed, so it is still the main game-ending tool. As the video says, an earlier Baron means games can end two or three minutes sooner.
Before you start Baron, check three things: the enemy jungler is dead or seen far away, side waves are pushing toward the enemy, and your team has vision of the pit entrances. If you cannot tick all three, take a turret or a drake instead. The full timer table also appears in our Season 2026 changes guide.
LoL jungle macro: turning leads into turrets
free LoL jungle macro is about what you do after a kill or an objective. Season 2026 rewards pushing turrets: plates no longer fall off at 14:00, outer turrets lose resists from 11:00, and minion waves arrive every 25 seconds after 14:00 and every 20 seconds after 30:00. The video says the faster waves start at 15 minutes; the wiki puts the first change at 14:00.
After every won fight, ask in this order:
- Can we hit a turret right now?
- Is an objective up within the next 60 seconds?
- Can I clear the camps that are up, then come back with Smite ready?
Homeguard boots help junglers too. After a recall you move fast towards your lane's outermost living turret, and later in the game towards the furthest minion wave. The video says Homeguard lasts until the tier 2 turret; the patch notes say the outermost living turret. Use that speed to reach the next fight first.
This is also how to carry as jungler: you do not need the most kills, you need your team to be one step ahead at every objective. Our ranked climbing guide explains how laners can sync with you around these timers.
League of Legends jungler mistakes
skip The most common League of Legends jungler mistakes, and how to get better at jungle LoL by fixing them:
| Mistake | Why it hurts | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Ganking the same losing lane again and again | Kill gold drops for champions who keep dying, and you fall behind in camps | Play to the lane that can win |
| Walking over enemy wards to clear them | Your position is revealed to the whole team | Path around them or use a Control Ward |
| Starting an objective with no wave pressure | Enemy laners arrive first | Push lanes, then start |
| Using both Smite charges on camps before a drake | No Smite for the fight | Keep one charge 60 seconds before spawns |
| Clearing slowly on an off-meta pick | 2026 clears are slower for everyone | Pick a champion with a reliable clear |
| Ignoring the enemy jungler's start | You get counter-ganked or invaded | Track their first clear every game |
These are the best jungle tips Season 16 (2026) has to offer for beginners: plan your first clear, gank with a reason, track the enemy jungler, and be first to every objective.
How this guide was fact-checked
- From the official League of Legends Wiki: Jungling (role, ganking, invading, counter-jungling, leash, camp timer display and settings), Smite (600/1,000/1,400 damage, two charges, 90-second recharge), Gustwalker Hatchling, Mosstomper Seedling and Scorchclaw Pup (450 gold, treats at 15 and 35, Primal Smite rewards, minion penalties), Blue Sentinel, Red Brambleback, Murk Wolf, Raptor, Gromp, Krug and Rift Scuttler (spawn, respawn, gold), Voidgrubs, Rift Herald, Dragon and Baron Nashor (spawn and respawn timers).
- From the official patch notes: 26.1 (jungle quest 35 treats, Smite tiers, 50% damage from non-epic monsters, monster damage bonus 25% to 10%, camp spawn times, buff wisps, Faelights, epic monster resistances, comeback XP), 26.3 (smaller pixel brush Faelights), 26.6 (Herald triggers Overgrowth), 26.14 (Blue buff ability haste), 26.16 (jungle pet scaling) and 26.19 (Nocturne). Patches 26.20 and 26.21 have no system changes to the jungle.
- From the video's own screen: the three jungle pets, the drake-stack comparison, Faelight rings and the superward vision area.
- Corrections to the video: Unleashed Smite deals 1,000, not 800; epic monsters are 10–35% tougher through resistances, not a flat 15%; Faelight bonus vision lasts 45 seconds, not until the ward dies; Baron went from 25:00 to 20:00, not 22:00; faster waves start at 14:00, not 15:00; Homeguard goes to the outermost living turret, not the tier 2 turret; mid lane's empowered recall that the video mentions was removed in patch 26.9 and replaced with 8% bonus AD and AP.
What this guide doesn't answer
- Which jungle champions are strongest right now: balance changes every two weeks, so tier lists go stale quickly.
- Full builds and rune pages: these belong in champion guides.
- Exact clear routes and times per champion: they depend on the champion, the pet and the leash, and no official source lists them.
- Jungle in Swiftplay, ARAM or Classic: these modes use different jungle rules (Swiftplay finishes the quest at 25 treats, for example).
Frequently asked
How do you jungle in League of Legends as a beginner?
Buy a jungle pet with Smite, clear your camps from 0:55, and decide before minions arrive which lane you will gank or whether you will full clear. Gank pushed lanes where your laner has crowd control, track where the enemy jungler started, and be on the right side of the map for Voidgrubs at 8:00, drakes from 5:00 and Baron at 20:00.
What does the jungle role quest give in 2026?
The jungle role quest finishes when your pet has eaten 35 treats (one per large monster). At 15 treats Smite becomes Unleashed Smite (1,000 damage), and at 35 it becomes Primal Smite (1,400 damage) with your pet's bonus. Completion also gives +10 gold and +10 XP per large monster and 4% movement speed in the jungle and river, 8% out of combat.
When should you gank in LoL?
Gank when the enemy laner is pushed past the middle of the lane, your laner has crowd control or follow-up, the enemy has used Flash, and you know the enemy jungler is on the other side. Avoid lanes where the wave sits under the enemy turret or a Control Ward or Faelight superward covers your path. Levels 3 to 4 and level 6 are the usual early windows.
Which jungle pet should I pick in League of Legends?
Scorchclaw Pup (red) suits ganking and dueling because its final reward burns and slows champions. Gustwalker Hatchling (blue) gives movement speed in brushes and after large monster kills. Mosstomper Seedling (green) gives a 200 to 360 shield that refreshes after each camp, good for tanks. Since the quest now gives movement speed, red or green is often the better choice.
When do jungle camps and objectives spawn in Season 2026?
Blue, red, Murk Wolves and Raptors spawn at 0:55, Gromp and Krugs at 1:07 and both Rift Scuttlers at 2:55. Buff camps respawn after 5 minutes and small camps after 2:15. The first drake spawns at 5:00, Voidgrubs at 8:00 (once), Rift Herald at 15:00 (once) and Baron Nashor at 20:00. Atakhan was removed in patch 26.01.
