🎯 The core idea
Season 2026 moved League of Legends away from fighting over big monsters and toward pushing turrets. Atakhan and Feats of Strength are gone, turret plates never fall off, every turret builds Crystalline Overgrowth, Faelights boost wards, games start 35 seconds sooner and every role has a quest. Learn those six changes and a returning player can follow any game on Summoner's Rift today.
- free costs nothing
- cheap small cost
- setup needs preparation
- grind pays off slowly
- skip the thing to stop doing
This page explains the League of Legends Season 2026 changes for players coming back after a break. It starts from a 3-minute preseason overview by 3 Minute League of Legends, uploaded on 1 December 2025 while the changes were still on the PBE. We checked every claim against the patch 26.1 notes (live 7 January 2026), every patch since then up to 26.21 (20 October 2026), Riot's /dev: Ranked 2026 blog and the official League of Legends Wiki. Where the video is wrong or out of date, we say so in the section. Some players still call this Season 16, because the old count would make 2026 the sixteenth season, even though Riot now numbers patches by year (26.x). Treat this as a living "what changed in 2026" page: the systems below are how the game works as of patch 26.21.
Every 2026 change at a glance
free If you only read one part of this page, read this table. The left column is what you remember from 2025, and the right column is what you will find on the Rift today. The new map is themed after Demacia, so expect more blue and gold, but the layout of lanes and jungle camps is the same.
| Area | Before 2026 | Season 2026 (patch 26.21) |
|---|---|---|
| Game start | Minions at 1:05 | Minions at 0:30, buff camps at 0:55 |
| Atakhan, Blood Roses, Feats of Strength | In the game | Removed in 26.01 |
| First Blood and first turret | Folded into Feats | +100 gold and +300 gold again |
| Baron Nashor | 25:00 | 20:00 |
| Epic monster stats | Mix of game time and level | Scale with level like champions, tougher to kill |
| Vision | Wards and trinkets | Faelights turn wards into superwards |
| Turret plates | Outer turrets only, gone at 14:00 | Outer, inner and inhibitor turrets, permanent |
| Turret damage tool | Demolish rune | Crystalline Overgrowth on every lane turret |
| Minion waves | Every 30 seconds all game | Every 25 seconds from 14:00, every 20 from 30:00 |
| Roles | Jungle and support quests only | Role quests for all five roles |
| Critical strikes | 175% damage | 200% damage |
| Ranked | Autofill felt like a loss | Aegis of Valor, autofill parity, Climb Indicator |
Faster game start and earlier jungle camps
free Patch 26.1 cut the dead time at the start of every game. Minions now spawn at 30 seconds instead of 1:05, so the claim in the video about minions spawning 30 seconds into the game is correct. The video's "35 seconds earlier" for jungle monsters is also right for the buff camps.
| What spawns | Season 2026 time |
|---|---|
| Minion waves | 0:30 |
| Blue Sentinel, Red Brambleback, Murk Wolves, Raptors | 0:55 |
| Krugs, Gromp | 1:07 |
| Rift Scuttler | 2:55 |
| Ambient gold | starts at 1:05 |
Other start-of-game timers moved with it: remakes are possible from 0:55 to 2:25, and an early surrender with an AFK player opens at 2:55. Level-one invades still work, but you have less time to set them up before your laners have to leave for their waves.
Atakhan and Feats of Strength removed
skip Atakhan, his Blood Roses and Feats of Strength were all removed in patch 26.01. Riot's reasoning was that they added complexity without enough value and pushed every game toward the same objective fight. If an old guide tells you to play around Atakhan's spawn or the Feat of Warfare, ignore that part.
Because Feats are gone, two gold rewards came back:
- First Blood grants +100 gold to the killer.
- The first turret destroyed grants +300 gold, shared by nearby players.
Kill gold also changed. A champion who keeps dying loses bounty value faster, so camping the same lane all game pays less. Patch 26.3 softened the first version of this: a death now cuts base kill gold by 1 per 3.5 gold given away instead of 1 per 2.5.
Epic monsters: Baron at 20 minutes, level-based scaling
setup With Atakhan gone, Baron Nashor spawns at 20:00 again instead of 25:00. That part of the video is right. The "+15% health" on the slide is a simplification. Patch 26.1 made epic monsters tougher mostly through armor and magic resist: Riot says a team takes 10–30% longer to kill them, Elemental Drakes have up to 35% more effective HP, and Elder Dragon about 20% more. Smite and the jungle pet deal true damage, so junglers taking objectives alone are hurt much less than full teams.
The bigger change is how they scale. Every epic monster now has base stats and level-ups like a champion, plus a minimum level, so a level 15 Baron fight feels the same whatever the game clock says. That is why "epic monsters scaling with champion level" shows up in patch discussions.
| Objective | First spawn in 2026 | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Elemental Drake | 5:00 | Local rewards went up; Dragon Soul takes longer to secure |
| Voidgrubs | 8:00 | Gold goes to whoever kills each grub |
| Rift Herald | 15:00 | Its charge also triggers Crystalline Overgrowth (26.6) |
| Baron Nashor | 20:00 | Gold reward halved (+150 instead of +300), buff and experience kept |
Most epic monsters also stopped paying players who are simply nearby, so laners can stay on their waves instead of walking to the pit. The timers match our ranked climbing guide, which covers how to use them.
Faelights: rings that turn wards into superwards
cheap Faelights are rings of glowing mushrooms on the map (the video spells them "Feylight"). Put any ward on one and it becomes a superward: +25% vision radius, plus a bonus vision area that lasts 45 seconds. The bonus area is the same whatever ward you use, so a Control Ward does not make it bigger. Enemies only find out they are inside it if they have a sweeper or Control Ward in the area, or if they ping your ward.
Where Faelights spawn:
| When | Locations |
|---|---|
| Game start | 4 near the base gates (vision into your own jungle), 2 in the pixel brushes at each end of the river, 2 in the river wall brushes near mid |
| After the Elemental Rift transformation | 4 more near the side lanes, one per jungle quarter |
Patch 26.3 made the pixel brush Faelights smaller (they now stop before the Scuttle pad and the pit entrance) because they were making early jungle pathing too easy to read. The video's "yellow wards will come up more often" is only half true today: 26.1 cut the Stealth Ward trinket cooldown to 170–90 seconds, but 26.3 put the early-level value back to 210 seconds, so it is now 210–90 seconds by level. The extra Scryer's Blooms the video mentions are real. More appear at 15:00, including behind each side-lane inner turret, and they respawn every 90–120 seconds.
Crystalline Overgrowth: free turret damage for everyone
free Crystalline Overgrowth is the change returning players notice least and should use most. Every targetable lane turret slowly grows crystals. The next enemy champion who attacks it bursts the crystals for bonus true damage. The damage depends only on how long the crystals have grown and your team's average level, not on your items, so any champion can use it.
- Crystals first appear 90 seconds after the turret becomes eligible (about 1:40 game time), then again after each burst.
- They stay at minimum damage for 60 seconds, grow for 240 seconds, then stay at maximum.
- At team level 1 a burst deals 2–3.3% of the turret's max health; at level 18 it deals 8.8–18.9%.
- Melee champions get extra attack range on a crystallized turret.
- It does not trigger while the turret's early Reinforced Armor (backdoor protection) is up, and it waits if enemies are standing near the turret when it should appear.
In practice: whenever you shove a wave and the turret has crystals, hit the turret once before you leave. A single auto attack is enough, and it adds up to free plates over a game.
Demolish is now a three-hit rune
setup Since Overgrowth now does what Demolish used to do, Riot simplified the rune. The video is right that it is now a three-hit effect: every third basic attack against a turret deals bonus physical damage. Current wiki values:
| Demolish | Melee | Ranged |
|---|---|---|
| Bonus damage on the 3rd hit | 85 + 28% of your max health | 50 + 20% of your max health |
| Cooldown | 30 seconds | 30 seconds |
You no longer stand next to the turret to charge it up. Demolish is still worth taking on tanky split-pushers, but it is no longer the only way to make progress on turrets.
Turret plates are permanent now
grind Turret plates no longer fall off at 14 minutes. Outer, inner and inhibitor turrets all have plates now, and you see them as segments of the health bar, not as 3D models. The video gets one number wrong here: it says inner turrets have three plates, but the patch notes and wiki give them five, the same as outer turrets. Every plated turret pays its gold out at 10%, 25%, 45%, 70% and 100% missing health.
| Turret | Plates | Gold in plates |
|---|---|---|
| Outer | 5 | 120 each (600), falling by 10 per minute from 11:00, down to 80 each |
| Inner | 5 | 600 total |
| Inhibitor | 5 | 600 total |
| Nexus | none | respawns at 40% health instead of 100% |
Outer turrets also lose 15 armor and magic resist per minute from 11:00 (60 at most), so they get softer as the laning phase ends. Turrets take 20% more damage from melee champions. The video is right about Nexus turrets: when they respawn they have only 40% health, so there is never a reason to leave one alive on purpose.
Minion waves every 25, then 20 seconds
free To give teams more chances to push, waves arrive faster later in the game. The video's numbers match the official wiki:
| Game time | Wave interval | Composition change |
|---|---|---|
| 0:30 to 14:00 | 30 seconds | Cannon on the 3rd wave (was the 4th), then every 3rd wave |
| 14:00 to 30:00 | 25 seconds | One fewer melee minion on cannon waves |
| 30:00 onward | 20 seconds | One fewer caster minion per wave |
Minions also move faster (350 base speed), deal a bit more to turrets, and each wave is worth slightly less gold. Patch 26.9 made melee minions a little tankier so waves take longer to die and roaming windows open up. In short, a side wave you ignore after 14 minutes builds up faster than you are used to.
Role quests for all five roles, in short
grind The biggest change for players who pick a role is role quests. Junglers (pet treats) and supports (World Atlas) already had quests. Since 26.1, top, mid and bot have them too, and all five fill up by playing your assigned lane: minions, plates, turrets, takedowns and time in lane. Points earned outside your lane are cut, which is why the old "LANE SWAP DETECTED" pop-up is gone: the quest now does that job.
The video describes the 26.1 version. Several rewards have changed since, so here are the current ones (as of 26.21):
| Role | Quest reward now | Changed since the video? |
|---|---|---|
| Top | Level cap 20, 600 XP, +11% XP and +80 per takedown, free Teleport (390 s) or a shielding upgraded Teleport | Yes: XP and Teleport retuned in 26.9–26.19 |
| Jungle | Primal Smite (1,400 damage) | Same idea |
| Mid | Tier 3 boots plus 8% bonus AD and AP | Yes: empowered recall removed in 26.9 |
| Bot (ADC) | 300 gold, extra gold income, boots move to a 7th slot | Takedown gold cut from 50 to 40 |
| Support | Control Wards in the quest slot from the start, cheaper after completion | Yes: wards moved to the slot in 26.3 |
Point values, the out-of-lane penalty and how to finish each quest fast are in our role quests guide, so we will not repeat them here.
Homeguards, crits and lane swaps
free Homeguard no longer has a fixed duration. It lasts until you reach the action, enter combat or step into the jungle. The video says it lasts "until your tier 2 turret", but the patch notes say it takes you at least to your outermost living turret in that lane. After 14:00, or once any turret in that lane has fallen, it follows the furthest minion wave and ends about 2,000 units before it. It gives 80% move speed (falling to 40%) before 14:00 and 150% (falling to 65%) after.
Critical strikes deal 200% damage again, up from 175%. To compensate, Riot cut the crit scaling on many marksman and crit-heavy abilities in the same patch. Yasuo, Yone, Jhin and Senna still crit for less than the full 200%.
Lane swaps are not banned. There is just no warning pop-up any more, because role quests already reward staying in your own lane.
New and returning items for 2026
cheap The video skips items, so here is the short version. Patch 26.1 added at least one item for every class, brought back two old favourites and removed Aegis of the Legion.
| Item | Type | For |
|---|---|---|
| Dusk and Dawn | New | AP fighters who auto attack between spells |
| Fiendhunter Bolts | New | Marksmen with strong ultimates |
| Endless Hunger | New | AD caster fighters who want sustain |
| Bastionbreaker | New | AD assassins who need to end games |
| Actualizer | New (active) | Mana-stacking mages |
| Hexoptics C44 | New | Long-range crit marksmen |
| Bandlepipes | New | Tank supports, team attack speed aura |
| Protoplasm Harness | New | Tanks, a lifeline item |
| Whispering Circlet / Diadem of Songs | New | Enchanters who stack mana |
| Hextech Gunblade | Returning, 3,000 gold | AD/AP hybrids, active slow |
| Stormrazor | Returning, 3,200 gold | Crit marksmen; attack speed raised to 25% in 26.17 |
The Season 2 update (26.9) added more: Doran's Bow and Doran's Helm as starting items, Gluttonous Greaves (omnivamp boots), and two returning runes, Deathfire Touch and Stormraider's Surge. Phase Rush, Opportunity and Trailblazer were removed. Hextech Gunblade returns with a 60-second active that slows, and Stormrazor returns as a second item that gives marksmen attack damage, attack speed and crit in one slot. Item numbers change most patches, so check the in-game shop before you copy an old build.
Ranked in 2026: Aegis of Valor and autofill
setup Most of the ranked changes in the video come from Riot's /dev: Ranked 2026 blog and went live with 26.1:
- Autofill parity: matchmaking first tries to put an autofilled player against another autofilled player in the same role, then tries for the same number of autofilled players on each team.
- Climb Indicator: shows when someone's visible rank is behind their MMR, so the "Silver player in a Plat lobby" is easy to explain.
- Flex and Solo/Duo: Flex rating is pulled toward your Solo/Duo rank, but Flex never pulls Solo up.
- Champion select: you can no longer ban a champion an ally is hovering, and champ select is about 30 seconds shorter.
- Dodging: dodging no longer clears your autofill status, and from Master upward a dodge counts as a full loss.
Aegis of Valor has changed since the video. At launch, an autofilled player who got a C mastery grade or better either lost no LP on a defeat or got double LP on a win, and players in often-autofilled roles got the same reward now and then. Since Season 3 (patch 26.15), Aegis only applies to wins: a win gives double LP, there is no mastery requirement, and losses are no longer protected. Duo queue also changed. 26.1 allowed duos up to Challenger in most regions, but since 26.15 Master players can only duo with players close to their rank, and Grandmaster and Challenger players cannot duo. WASD movement has been allowed in ranked since 26.9.
Season 2026 timeline: Season 2, Season 3 and Act 2
free 2026 is split into three ranked seasons. Each one brought a gameplay update on top of the 26.1 overhaul:
| Patch | Date | What changed for Summoner's Rift |
|---|---|---|
| 26.1 (Season 1) | 7–8 January | Everything above: role quests, Faelights, Overgrowth, permanent plates, new items, Swiftplay overhaul |
| 26.3 | 3 February | First follow-up: kill gold, turret resists after a plate, Faelight and trinket nerfs, Control Wards start in the support slot |
| 26.5 | 3 March | Last-hit indicators (on by default for new accounts) |
| 26.9 (Season 2) | 28 April | Role quest rework (wider lane zone, roam grace), new starting items and boots, Deathfire Touch and Stormraider's Surge, Phase Rush removed, WASD in ranked |
| 26.15 (Season 3) | 28 July | Aegis of Valor now win-only, Apex duo limits, League Classic mode added |
| 26.16 | 11 August | Support quest penalties for early roaming |
| 26.19 | 22 September | Top lane Teleport cooldowns cut; Team Voice delayed |
| 26.21 | 20 October | Season 3 Act 2 battle pass, replay downloads limited to 10 per hour |
About Team Voice: Riot's September dev update said Season 3 Act 2 would add Team Voice, voice chat with your whole team (not only your premade), starting in North America and Oceania with patch 26.20, with speaking tied to your Honor level. The 26.19 patch notes then delayed it, and as of patch 26.21 there is still no release patch. If you read that Team Voice arrived in 26.20, that is out of date. The Act 2 battle pass itself came with 26.21, not 26.20.
Swiftplay got its own overhaul in 26.1. Champions start at level 3 with 1,400 gold, and it uses the faster Homeguards, but it has no role quests.

- From the video's own screen: the slides on game start, Atakhan and Feats, minion timers, quest rewards and the Aegis of Valor screen, shown as the preseason version where they have since changed.
- Corrections to the video: inner turrets have five plates, not three; epic monsters are 10–35% tougher mostly through resistances, not a flat +15% health; Homeguard lasts to your outermost living turret, not the tier 2 turret; yellow trinket buffs were partly reverted in 26.3; mid's empowered recall was replaced by 8% bonus AD and AP; Aegis of Valor no longer protects losses; Team Voice did not ship in 26.20.

Frequently asked
What changed in League of Legends Season 2026?
Patch 26.1 removed Atakhan, Blood Roses and Feats of Strength, moved Baron back to 20:00, made turret plates permanent on outer, inner and inhibitor turrets, added Crystalline Overgrowth and Faelights, started minions at 0:30, gave all five roles a role quest, raised crit damage to 200% and added new items such as Bastionbreaker and Bandlepipes plus returning Stormrazor and Hextech Gunblade.
Is Atakhan removed from League of Legends?
Yes. Atakhan and his Blood Roses were removed in patch 26.01 along with Feats of Strength. Because of that, Baron Nashor spawns at 20:00 again instead of 25:00, First Blood gives +100 gold and the first turret gives +300 gold again.
What are Faelights in League of Legends?
Faelights are rings of glowing mushrooms on Summoner's Rift. A ward placed on one becomes a superward with 25% more vision radius and reveals a bonus area for 45 seconds. Eight exist at game start (base gates, river pixel brushes and river wall brushes) and four more appear near the side lanes after the Elemental Rift transformation.
How does Crystalline Overgrowth work on turrets?
Every lane turret slowly grows crystals. The next enemy champion to attack it bursts them for bonus true damage based on how long they grew and the attacking team's average level, from 2-3.3% of the turret's max health at level 1 up to 8.8-18.9% at level 18. Crystals regrow 90 seconds after each burst, so hit the turret once whenever you shove a wave.
What changed in League of Legends Season 2 and Season 3 of 2026?
Season 2 (patch 26.9) reworked role quests with a wider lane zone and roam grace, replaced mid's empowered recall, added Doran's Bow, Doran's Helm and Gluttonous Greaves, brought back Deathfire Touch and Stormraider's Surge and removed Phase Rush. Season 3 (patch 26.15) made Aegis of Valor give double LP on wins only and limited Apex duos. Team Voice was planned for 26.20 but has been delayed.
