You will be able to identify the best tank technologies to research, build practical and cost-effective tank variants, and assemble division templates suited for both multiplayer and single player in Hearts of Iron IV. This guide explains which tank roles are optimal, how to design and place support tanks, and how to maximize breakthrough and durability with the current meta.

Quick answer

This page covers tank research order, a design for each tank role and the tank division template they assemble into; for the general division-width and support-slot rules behind any template, see HOI4 division templates after the Thunder at Our Gates rework. For the SPG and heavy tank destroyer divisions these tanks go into, see HOI4 meta division templates and tank designs.

Set your tank research priorities

Aim for the following technology targets to build competitive tanks and divisions throughout the mid-game:

  • 0:03
  • 0:32
  • 0:32
  • 0:32
  • 1:01
This is the research baseline that the rest of the builds assume.

Keep research up-to-date for guns and support companies. Earlier armor techs are less impactful than keeping your gun and support tech up.

Build the cheapest armored support vehicle

Armored support vehicles should be produced as cheaply as possible, since stats rarely matter for their support role.

  • 1:28
  • 1:57
Armored support vehicle production uses the lowest-cost option, as shown in the selected setup.
Careful

A cheaper outdated armored support vehicle exists if you use the version from earlier research. Check the equipment list for hidden variants.

Choose between garrison tanks and recon light tanks

Light tanks in the current meta are specialized: either for garrison duty or as support recon units. Here’s how they compare:

RoleProduction CostStats NeededMaterials NeededUsage RecommendationSpeed Target
Garrison tankCheapest possibleHardness > 80%Only steelUse when cheaper than support equipment; avoid MPNot relevant
Recon light tankModerateMaximize breakthroughStandard plus steelUsed for special forces and tank division support5.3–5.5 km/h
Military police (MP)HigherNot recommended (meta rejects)StandardNot used in current meta for garrisonsN/A
The Division Designer shows a garrison light tank template with stripped-down stats and steel-only cost, suitable for cheap occupation.
  • Garrison tanks: Only use when they cost less than support equipment and need only steel. Their main stat is hardness: aim for 80% or higher.
  • Military police and motorized MPs: Not recommended in vanilla metagame for occupation roles; meta strongly favors the garrison tank instead.
  • Recon light tanks: Built around high breakthrough. Target a speed of 5.3 km/h; can push to 5.5 km/h for certain designs. These are support units, not line combatants.
Edge cases

Military police might see niche use in mods, and some two-width garrison templates may be sufficiently optimized. Consider MP only in modded or specialized play.

Attach recon tanks to the right divisions

Recon tanks deliver breakthrough to divisions, but their cost means they should be used selectively. Placement matters:

  • 4:20
  • 4:50
  • 5:18
The Division Designer screen shows support slots where recon tanks can be attached, with breakthrough bonus stats visible.

Recon tank stats scale with doctrine and upgrades. Monitor speed to match your line units, especially for encirclement builds.

Use flame tanks for special forces and tank divisions

Medium flame tanks operate under the same principles as recon tanks: prioritize breakthrough and place them in the divisions where their cost justifies their impact.

A flame tank should always retain a radio module for additional bonuses. Optional modules include stabilizer (for increased hit chance), armor skirt (for extra defense), and dozer blade (for further entrenchment). These choices depend on your doctrine and intended division role.

The tank designer screen shows a medium flame tank intended for special forces and tank divisions, with various breakthrough-focused modules clearly visible.

Do not place flame tanks in line infantry divisions — their production cost is wasted, and the stats do not fill the needed role. Use them only in special forces (marines, paratroopers, mountaineers) and armored divisions where their breakthrough is essential.

Decide whether amphibious tanks are worth the cost

Amphibious tanks are considered meta for naval invasion setups but are often seen as overpriced and less efficient compared to alternatives. Their niche is in divisions intended for assaulting ports from the sea, but you should weigh their considerable production cost against their actual impact.

A stronger amphibious tank uses a medium cannon (preferably level 2 or higher), and the practical invasion template is 8 battalions of amphibious tanks and 8 amtraks. This mix allows for effective naval invasions, but you pay a high IC price and use rare resources.

Heavy tanks, especially SPGs, are presented as a cheaper alternative for landing forces. Instead of investing in amphibious tanks, you might create a heavy tank — or a heavy SPG template — and combine it with amtraks for the actual landing. This builds a division that is cheaper and often more powerful for the limited use-case of naval landings.

Alternatives

Landing next to a port with marines or attacking the port directly often replaces the need for dedicated amphibious tanks. Most single-player AI can be defeated without them.

Pick a heavy tank role for multiplayer or single player

Heavy tanks are the line battalion meta for both single and multiplayer. Medium tanks are rejected for standard line use; focus instead on the variants below:

ModeRecommended VariantDesign FeaturesStat EmphasisTypical Gun ChoiceWhy This Is Meta
MultiplayerTank DestroyerImproved heavy cannon, three small cannons, radioHard attack, armorHigh velocity cannonDoctrine buffs hard attack
Single playerSPGMedium tower, heavy/medium howitzer for soft attackSoft attack, breakthroughMedium howitzer/turretAI is vulnerable to soft attack
The heavy tank destroyer build is shown as the optimal multiplayer choice, with strong hard attack and appropriately chosen modules.
The SPG tank designer screen demonstrates the optimal soft attack and breakthrough setup for single-player heavy tank battalions.
  • Multiplayer: Use tank destroyers in line battalions for maximum hard attack; doctrines and support companies boost this further. Medium tanks are suboptimal here.
  • Single player: Use heavy SPGs with a medium turret and howitzer for exceptional soft attack and breakthrough. If heavy howitzers are not available, favor improved medium howitzers.
  • Medium tanks: Only viable in specific non-meta builds (e.g., German D-Day SPGs) but generally not recommended for line tank battalions.
Alternative builds

Heavy tank SPGs may not always be optimal for single player. Improved medium howitzers fit in a medium turret and cost less, offering nearly as much soft attack for their IC.

Design armor meme tanks for extra armor and piercing resistance

The "armor meme" strategy uses a single battalion of extremely well-armored tanks to make a division nearly impossible to pierce and highly durable. These tanks stack armor and, optionally, hard attack if anti-air modules are added.

  • setup investment required
  • grind higher IC, can be reduced
  1. 12:10
  2. 12:56
Example of a single-battalion armor meme tank design maximizing armor and anti-air modules for durability and piercing resistance.

Production cost can be reduced via easy maintenance or cheaper modules if your industrial base is weaker.

Assemble the final tank division template

Putting all the pieces together, your armored division should mix tank battalions, supporting companies, and mechanized as appropriate. The exact template will depend on your available tech, doctrine, and whether your focus is multiplayer, single player, or amphibious landings.

  • 14:27
  • 14:52
  • 15:20
  • 15:48
  • 16:47

Single-player tip

For SPG and artillery-heavy templates, fine-tune armor so you are not pierced rather than stacking it far beyond needed. Take advantage of AI weaknesses and minimize IC spent where possible.

Also worth knowing

Before you build
  • A cheaper armored support vehicle is often hidden as outdated equipment. Review the available equipment list after research to select the lowest possible cost variant.
  • Military police may be useful in modded play, and two-width templates might suffice for garrison roles; in vanilla, the meta strongly disfavors MP for garrisons.
  • Improved medium howitzer fits the medium turret and is more cost-effective for single player SPGs than heavy SPGs, with nearly equal soft attack.
  • Amphibious tanks can often be replaced by marine landings adjacent to a port: attacking the port directly with marines is usually more efficient than building expensive amphibious tanks.
  • Reliability should never drop below 80%. Lower reliability leads to excessive equipment loss. Balance modules and design features to keep reliability above this threshold.
  • Diesel engines are preferable on SPGs and heavy TDs in multiplayer. Speed is less important than production cost and reliability in those roles.
  • Tank division combat width may now be 36 instead of 34. Check division designer calculations and adjust your battalion counts accordingly.
  • Medium tanks have a niche use for Germany producing medium SPGs in D-Day scenarios; general meta still favors heavies for line roles.

Frequently asked

What should I research before building tanks?

The core research targets are 1940 or 1941 tank weapons, mechanized, 1939 support companies, and 1938 radio. The point is to stay on strong gun tech and modern support tech instead of spending on outdated armor lines. If you can reach 1940 guns early, that is the main benchmark.

What is the best tank for garrisons?

A dedicated garrison light tank is the intended low-cost option when it is cheaper than support equipment and built from steel only. It is meant to replace military police in large occupation setups. For most situations, cavalry remains the cheaper and simpler choice.

Should I use light or medium tanks in line battalions?

No. The plan rejects normal light and medium line tanks and points to heavy tanks as the main line-battalion choice. Light designs are treated as niche support or recon pieces, not as the core combat division.

Are amphibious tanks worth building?

They are described as expensive and not the preferred choice. Their niche is a naval invasion setup with amphibious tanks plus amtraks, but the alternative suggested is a heavy SPG-style landing force. The practical takeaway is to skip them unless you specifically need that naval invasion role.
