AION 2 Best Class for Beginners: Which Class to Play

Gladiator, Ranger and Templar are the safest first classes in AION 2. This guide explains all eight classes, the Gladiator's Overhead Slam catch on Global, and how to pick by playstyle.

Adapted from Aion 2: Best Beginner Class | What Should You Play?

🎯 The core idea

For solo levelling, the most forgiving AION 2 class is the Gladiator: heavy armour, life steal and a short rotation. It starts weak in Global group dungeons until Overhead Slam reaches level 16, so the Ranger (easy ranged damage) and Templar (always wanted as tank) are equally safe picks. Your class is permanent, so choose the playstyle you enjoy.

  • free costs nothing
  • cheap small cost
  • setup needs preparation
  • grind pays off slowly
  • skip the thing to stop doing

All 8 classes and their roles at a glance

free AION 2 has 8 classes, and all of them are available at character creation on Global. Your class choice costs nothing: the class-specific items in NCSOFT's patch notes so far are weapon skins, so the best class for F2P players is simply the one you will enjoy levelling. This class overview uses the weapon each class carries in the official Halloween skin list (October 13/14 patch notes) and the roles described in the source video. The class roles are the classic MMO split: one dedicated tank (Templar), two supports (Cleric and Chanter) and five damage dealers, with the Gladiator doubling as an off-tank.

The video calls the pet class "Summoner or Elementalist"; on Global the class is named Spiritmaster, which is the name used in the official patch notes and in the rest of this guide. If you are brand new to the game, read our AION 2 beginner guide alongside this one for servers, factions and the first-day systems.

Why the Gladiator is the easiest class to start with

free The Gladiator is the video's top recommendation and the easiest class to learn in AION 2. It hits hard with a two-handed greatsword while wearing real armour, so it can absorb mistakes that would kill a cloth-wearing class. Its kit mixes area damage, plenty of crowd control and life steal, which together cover almost everything you meet while levelling.

That mix matters most in the open world, where new players spend most of their time alone. The video rates the Gladiator as top tier for open-world play and S tier for solo content such as Nightmare dungeons and Ascension Trials. If you want the best solo class for your first character, this is it.

The honest downside: the first few hours are plain. Your skill list is short at low level, and the class only gets flashier as you unlock faster leaps onto targets and skills that launch enemies into the air. Stick with it past the early levels before judging it.

Gladiator rotation and the Overhead Slam reset

setup The rotation is short. Turn on your buffs before the pull, leap onto the target, unload your burst, then keep an eye on your HP, heal back with life steal when needed, build mana and refresh your buffs. A few extra crowd-control skills help, but nothing about it is complicated.

Overhead Slam is the core damage skill. The tooltip in the video (an Overhead Slam at +5) shows 3,984 to 4,122 damage to up to 4 enemies within 4 m of a knocked-down target, always landing as a critical hit, on a 5-second cooldown. Its Specialty options include life absorption, an AoE version, an Upward Strike chain and guaranteed crits.

One correction to the video: it describes a 10% chance for Overhead Slam to trigger even on bosses and reset its cooldown. The tooltip on screen says 7% chance to trigger on targets with Incapacitated Immunity (the bosses), and "Remove cooldown" is a separate Specialty that stays locked until the skill reaches level 16. That level-16 unlock is the reason Gladiators feel much stronger once Overhead Slam is levelled, so put your skill points there first.

Other useful buttons named in the video: Mocking Blade for crowd control, which can also take a life-steal Specialty for open-world play, a leap to close distance, and Aerial Snare to lift enemies and hold them in place.

Rage Burst and the Gladiator stigmas

setup Stigmas open at level 22 (see the beginner guide for the slot levels). For PvE the video's picks are the plain, effective ones: Lunge Stance for attack speed, Zikel's Blessing for damage, and Lifestealing Blade to heal yourself back up, which matters a lot in solo instances. Lifestealing Blade is also a popular choice for solo play and PvP because it returns HP based on the damage you deal.

Rage Burst is the burst stigma to know. At level 5 its tooltip shows 4,950 to 5,135 damage to one target within 4 m on a 30-second cooldown, inflicts Wounded (enemy attack down 10% for 10 seconds), raises your PvE damage boost by 10% and PvP damage boost by 5%, and triggers Overhead Slam on the target. The tooltip also notes that Wounded does not stack with the Templar's Taunt.

If bosses or the open world keep killing you, the video's advice is to swap a damage stigma for a defensive one until your gear catches up. You can switch back at any time.

Gladiator stats for PvE and PvP

grind For PvE, the video says to go all-in on damage when choosing gear and upgrades:

ContentStats to prioritise
PvEAttack, Critical Hit, Combat Speed, Damage Boost, Critical Damage
PvPThe same damage stats plus more defence, with Accuracy mattering more

Treat this as a direction, not exact breakpoints. The video was recorded on the Taiwanese build before the Global launch and does not give target numbers, and NCSOFT has not published any.

Where the Gladiator falls behind in groups

skip Don't plan to main-tank endgame dungeons as a Gladiator. In easy group content it can stand in as a tank and often clears faster than a Templar because it deals far more damage, but endgame groups want a real tank. On the pre-launch Taiwanese build the video placed the Gladiator around A or B tier for PvE, with its damage trailing the Ranger and Assassin at the top end.

Global changes that picture for group play. Our AION 2 class tier list, based on Fubgun's Global ranking for the 1,400 to 2,400 item level range, puts the Gladiator in the bottom row for PvE groups until Overhead Slam reaches level 16 and its stigmas reach level 20, partly because it has no real taunt and holds threat poorly before its damage is high. Once it gets there it becomes one of the best classes, and the best-geared Gladiators already sit third on the Global DPS chart. So treat the Gladiator as the best class to main if you level solo and will invest in it, not as a quick alt for dungeons. Expect a slower start in groups, not a bad class.

PvP is where the class shines: survivability, crowd control and damage together mean you rarely need to fear a one-on-one encounter while travelling, and in large fights you don't melt to area damage the way an Assassin or Sorcerer does. The video puts it at S or A tier for PvP.

Ranger: the ranged alternative

free The Ranger fights from range, deals heavy damage and has skills to disengage and back away from enemies. That makes it excellent for open-world mobs and general solo play, and it handles most content well. Our tier list puts it in A tier on Global as one of the best farming classes, strong at every stage.

The weak spot in the video is story bosses: the creator struggled with them much more on Ranger than on Gladiator. He notes that higher latency on the Taiwanese servers may have made it worse, so Global players on a local server may find this less of a problem. If you prefer to stay out of melee range, the Ranger is just as valid a beginner class as the Gladiator.

Templar: the tank pick

grind The Templar takes an enormous amount of damage, which makes story boss fights much easier, and tanks are in high demand for endgame dungeons. Every party wants one, so you never struggle to find a group.

The trade-off is pace. The Templar kills more slowly and feels heavier in solo play than the Ranger or Gladiator, and new players spend most of their early hours alone. That is why the video ranks it third for beginners rather than first. If you already know you want to tank, start here; if you are unsure, a Gladiator gives you a taste of front-line play with faster solo levelling.

Assassin: big burst, many deaths

skip Skip the Assassin as your first character unless you already play melee burst classes in other MMOs. Its damage potential is huge, but it takes a beating, especially in boss fights: one mistake against a boss and you are on the floor. The video says many players found it exhausting to level.

Global data agrees: the Assassin needs a lot of stigma levels and skill points before it comes online, so our tier list has it at B tier at low gear, rising close to the top only with heavy investment.

Spiritmaster: summons to manage

setup The Spiritmaster fights alongside elemental spirits it summons. The video calls it relatively complex because of those summons and not ideal for a first character.

Global players see it more kindly, and our tier list calls it the most comfortable solo class of the three ranged damage dealers: the spirits help tank, it has plenty of self-healing and steady area and single-target damage, and it is one of the few classes that can run most of its rotation from one macro. The October 13/14 patch also fixed a bug where Ancient Spirit summons at level 15 or below did not use their skills properly, so early-level spirit problems you may have read about are addressed. If the idea of a pet class appeals to you, it is a reasonable choice; just expect more to learn than on a Gladiator.

Sorcerer, Cleric and Chanter

setup The Sorcerer sits in the middle. It deals good damage and is strong in a lot of content, but the video points to its lack of crowd control as the common complaint. On Global it sits in A tier, but it is the squishiest ranged class in solo play and its area damage depends on cooldowns, while it is very good in groups and rewards players who like pressing many buttons. Both Global patches since launch (October 13/14 and October 20/21) fixed Sorcerer bugs where Fire Wall's Embers and Cold Storm's Frostbite bonus damage did not apply correctly.

The Cleric (healer) and Chanter (support) are always in demand for endgame groups, but the video finds them tedious to level solo in the early game. On Global the Chanter currently performs far above expectations: it tops the Global DPS chart and gives the best party buffs, which puts it alone in S+ on our tier list, with Cleric and Templar in S tier because every group needs a healer and a tank. That makes it tempting, but it still asks for buff management and support awareness that a new player has to learn, and an overperforming class is the most likely to be adjusted later.

Which class should I play? Pick by playstyle

free The most important advice in the video is not to pick your class from a tier list alone. The playstyle has to fit you, because a player who masters their class outperforms someone on a meta pick they don't enjoy. If you are still asking which class to play, match it to how you like to fight:

You wantPick
The most forgiving solo levelling and strong PvPGladiator
To fight from range and farm fastRanger
To tank and always find a groupTemplar
Lots of buttons and big ranged damageSorcerer
A pet class you can partly macroSpiritmaster
To heal or buff and be wanted by every partyCleric or Chanter
High risk, high burst meleeAssassin

As of the October 20/21 patch notes, NCSOFT has made no balance changes to any class on Global, only bug fixes, so this beginner class advice still holds today. Whatever you choose, the Gladiator, Ranger and Templar are the three choices you can't really go wrong with.

How this guide was fact-checked

  • Source video: NoChatBot's "Aion 2: Best Beginner Class | What Should You Play?" (September 13, 2026), recorded on the Taiwanese build before the Global launch. The class rankings, rotation description, stat priorities and stigma picks are the creator's opinion and are attributed as such.
  • Official sources: NCSOFT's Steam patch notes for October 6/7, October 13/14 and October 20/21 were checked for class changes. They contain only bug fixes (Spiritmaster Ancient Spirit summons, Sorcerer Fire Wall and Cold Storm, Chanter Spinning Strike visuals) and no balance changes. Class weapons come from the official Halloween weapon skin list. The class is named Spiritmaster on Global, not "Summoner or Elementalist" as in the video.
  • On-screen tooltips: Overhead Slam and Rage Burst numbers come from the skill tooltips shown in the video. Correction: the video says Overhead Slam has a 10% chance to proc on bosses and reset; the tooltip shows a 7% chance on targets with Incapacitated Immunity, and cooldown removal is a separate level-16 Specialty. The video's "rend blow" is not a skill name we could find; the burst skill it shows is Rage Burst. Stigma names follow the in-game spelling used in our beginner guide.
  • Global perspective: how classes perform on Global at early item levels comes from our AION 2 class tier list, built from Fubgun's Global tier list video and the Global DPS chart it shows. Where the pre-launch video and Global results differ (Gladiator in early groups, Chanter's strength, Spiritmaster's comfort), this guide says so.

What this guide doesn't answer

  • Full builds for each class: skill levels, Specialty picks and Daevanion paths need their own class guides.
  • Exact stat breakpoints: neither the video nor NCSOFT gives numbers, so we don't invent them.
  • Endgame raid rankings: raids were not out when the sources were recorded, and the balance may change before they arrive.
  • Faction and server choice: covered in the beginner guide, since it does not change which class is good.
  • Future balance patches: if NCSOFT adjusts the Chanter or any other class, rankings here may shift.

Frequently asked

What is the best class for beginners in AION 2?

For solo levelling, the Gladiator is the most forgiving AION 2 class: it wears heavy armour, uses a greatsword, heals itself with life steal and has a short rotation. The Ranger is the best ranged alternative and the Templar the best pick if you want to tank. On Global the Gladiator is weak in early group dungeons until Overhead Slam reaches level 16, so pick it as a main you will invest in.

What is the easiest class in AION 2?

The Gladiator is the easiest to learn: buff up, leap in, use Overhead Slam and your burst, and heal back with life steal. The Ranger is also easy because it fights from range and can disengage, though it can find story bosses harder. The Assassin, Spiritmaster, Cleric and Chanter ask more of a new player.

How many classes are in AION 2 and what are their roles?

AION 2 has 8 classes. Templar is the tank, Cleric the healer and Chanter the support and buffer. Gladiator (greatsword) is a melee damage dealer and off-tank, Assassin (dagger) a melee burst class, and Ranger (bow), Sorcerer (spellbook) and Spiritmaster (orb, with summoned spirits) are the ranged damage dealers.

What is the best solo class in AION 2?

The Gladiator is rated top tier in the open world and S tier for solo content such as Nightmare dungeons and Ascension Trials, thanks to armour, crowd control and life steal. The Ranger is also excellent solo and one of the best farming classes, and the Spiritmaster is comfortable alone because its spirits help tank. The Sorcerer is the weakest of the ranged classes solo.

Should I play Chanter in AION 2 as a new player?

Chanter is currently the strongest class on Global: it tops the DPS chart and gives the best party buffs, and every group wants one. It is a support class, though, so it asks for buff management, and the source video finds it tedious to level solo early. Overperforming classes are also the most likely to be adjusted, so only pick it if you enjoy the support playstyle.
