🎯 The core idea
AION 2 rewards the side content you pass on the map far more than raw story speed: Empyrean Traces, sealed dungeons and strongholds feed the Monolith, skill points and upgrade materials that make you strong. Set up your auto-potion, skill macro and flight keys on day one, never pour enhancement into quest gear except the belt and amulet, and save energy-costing rewards for content where they matter.
- free costs nothing
- cheap small cost
- setup needs preparation
- grind pays off slowly
- skip the thing to stop doing
This AION 2 beginner guide is built on FrozenCloud's video, recorded on the Advanced Access build two days before the October 5, 2026 global launch, and checked against every official patch note NCSOFT has posted on Steam since then (up to the October 20/21 patch). Where the global build or the video's own on-screen tooltips say something different from the narration, the text below says so. If you are just getting started, the sections follow the order in which the systems unlock, so beginners can use it as a starter checklist, and the two movement and combat tricks (the skill macro and the flight boost) are worth setting up on your first day.
Server, faction and region before you start
free The first decision in AION 2 is made before character creation, so it is worth getting right on your first day. The launcher asks for your region first, then your faction, then a server. On Global each server holds only one faction: every Elyos server is paired with an Asmodian server, and the players you fight in the Abyss and in Spacetime Rifts come from that paired server. NCSOFT's launch notice says the pairings are reshuffled periodically to keep the factions balanced, so don't pick a server purely because of who it is matched against today.
Play the faction your friends play. Your story zones, towns and economy are shared only with your own faction. Server transfers exist but only in announced windows with per-server caps: the transfer for launch servers is free (0 Quna) and runs until the October 27/28 maintenance, and transfers into a crowded server can close early.
The currency panel and daily Kina caps
free The currency strip in the top-left corner is clickable. It explains what each currency is for and links to the place it is spent, which saves a lot of guessing in the first hours. The tab underneath shows your daily gain limits. In the video's footage the Kina daily gain limit is 1,000,000 and the Abyss Points limit is 500,000, with Kina resetting at 03:00 server time. Once you hit the Kina cap, further Kina from that source stops for the day, so farming past it is wasted time.
Kina comes in bound and unbound forms; the tooltip confirms bound Kina is spent first. Buy nothing from third-party sellers: NCSOFT posted a dedicated warning about illicit currency at launch and publishes account restriction lists several times a week.
Hotbar, auto-potion and auto-use consumables
setup F1 to F8 on the hotbar are consumable slots, and the slot marked X is the auto-potion. Right-click the auto-potion slot to set the HP percentage at which it fires. To make any other consumable trigger automatically in combat, hold Alt and drag it onto the bar; a yellow strip on the icon means auto-use is on. The same Alt trick works on consumables sitting in your inventory. These AION 2 basics take two minutes and remove most early deaths.
Side content on the map is your free power
free The main story quest is the spine of AION 2 progression, but the map around it is where most of your early power is. Open the map often and clear what is near you: Empyrean Traces (the feather icons), the green diamond markers, strongholds and sealed dungeons. They hand out upgrade materials and skill points, which the video rightly calls free power.
There is a second reason. If you rush only the story, you hit points where the next main quest is locked behind the Ascension bar (the Journal has a separate Ascension tab), and you have to backtrack to fill it with exactly this side content. Doing it as you pass is faster than doing it later, and it is the single biggest of the beginner mistakes the video warns about.
Which skills to level and how Specialty slots work
free The skill list opens at level 4 according to the video. Put points into the skills that hit hardest, and use your basic no-cooldown attack skill as the yardstick: the video's Sorcerer compares everything to their second skill, which has no cooldown and still hits hard, and only levels skills that beat it. Leave utility and buff skills at low levels for now.
Each skill has three Specialty slots. The video says they unlock at skill levels 8, 12 and 16; the Blaze tooltip in its footage shows the second and third options locked behind levels 12 and 16, which matches. You drag a Specialty option into a slot as the skill levels up. Every class has a meta pick, so look up yours, but don't overthink it: swapping is free, you just equip a different option.
Skill rows, weaving and the macro key
setup Skill casting works by rows. Place up to four skills on the row tied to one key and pressing that key four times fires all four in order. On top of that, many skill animations can be cancelled by a basic attack (left click by default), which is called weaving and is a real damage gain.
The macro automates both. Build your rows, open the Macro tab in the skill window and select the first skill of a row; now you hold one key instead of mashing it. Then go to Settings, Gameplay, scroll to the macro key bind and bind it to right click. Holding left and right click together lets the game weave basic attacks between your skills automatically. You know it works when a shadow animation appears on your character and both the basic attack and the skill row cycle. Add more rows by selecting the first skill of each row in the macro menu. Two rules from the video worth following:
| Rule | Why |
|---|---|
| Keep self-buffs and gap closers out of the macro | You want to time those yourself |
| Put any no-cooldown skill last in the chain | Otherwise the macro spams it and never reaches the rest |
Flying faster with the flight boost
free Flying is the fastest way to travel apart from teleports, but early on the flight gauge drains quickly. The fix shown in the video: press the flight key, then sprint, then the flight key again in quick succession. Each cycle gives a burst of momentum in the direction you face, so chaining it covers distance on far less gauge.
That only works if the keys are comfortable, so set them first. In Settings, Key Settings, General, scroll to Flight Controls and bind Start Flight / Stop, then set Sprint nearby. Sprint also acts as your dodge with invincibility frames, so you will press it a lot in combat too. The October 13/14 patch added an invert Y-axis option and an HP bar toggle in Settings if those bother you.
The Daevanion board without overthinking it
grind The Daevanion board is the large node grid that adds stats and skill levels. The video says it unlocks at level 13; the node tooltip in its own footage lists Required Character Level 12 for the Nezekan board's start node, so expect it around level 12 to 13 on Global. Each board belongs to an Empyrean Lord and lists its core nodes; Nezekan's are Combat Speed Increase and Cooldown Reduction.
Your goal as a new player is simple: activate the four orange nodes in the corners. The route between them is yours to choose, so grab nodes that boost the skills your class actually uses. If you want efficiency, look up your class's meta node path. The October 20/21 patch added a new Ariel board fed by Expedition (Hard) rewards, which is endgame content and not something to plan around while levelling.
The Monolith and account-wide Empyrean Traces
grind At level 16 the Monolith unlocks. Every Empyrean Trace (the feathers on the map) is spent here, and each Monolith level grants solid stats; press Resonate to level it. The video sets level 30 as the target for a new player, which is a sensible early goal because traces are a one-time collection.
The best part: traces only need collecting once per account. On an alt, open the Monolith and press Sync Empyrean Traces to pull in everything your main already found. If a trace in Verteron seemed unreachable during the Halloween event, the October 20/21 patch moved the traces blocked by decorations at Dawn Legion Base and Zumion Village to reachable spots.
Stigmas: when they unlock and what to slot
setup Stigmas open at level 22. They are strong extra skills that customise your class further, and they level up with bonuses of their own: the Sorcerer's Element Enhancement tooltip in the video shows upgrades at levels 5, 10, 15 and 20. You can only equip a limited number, and the slots open with character level:
| Stigma slot | Character level |
|---|---|
| 1st | 22 |
| 2nd | 27 |
| 3rd | 32 |
| 4th | 37 |
The video shows a pick list per class. Treat it as a starting point; PvE and PvP picks differ, and you will often trade damage for utility.
| Class | Stigmas suggested in the video |
|---|---|
| Gladiator | Rage Burst, Zikel's Blessing, Lunge Stance, Lifestealing Blade, Focused Block |
| Templar | Doom Shield, Battlefield Banner, Shield of Protection, Taunt |
| Cleric | Earth Punishment, Prayer of Amplification, Benevolence, Light of Protection, Resurrection, Noble Aura |
| Chanter | Undefeated Mantra, Sprint Mantra, Marchutan's Wrath, Power of the Storm, Guarding Blessing |
| Spiritmaster | Flame Blessing, Summon: Ancient Spirit, Jointstrike: Corrode, Enhance: Spirit Blessing |
| Sorcerer | Element Enhancement, Fire Wall, Cold Storm, Delayed Explosion |
| Assassin | Illusive Clone, Swift Contract, Savage Fang, Throw Shadowblade |
| Ranger | Vaizel's Authority, Griffon Arrow, Bow of Blessing, Supporting Fire |
Expeditions and the energy you should not spend
skip Expeditions also unlock at level 22. They are group dungeons, and the main story requires you to clear some of them. Difficulty scales with party size: use Quick Join to find a group, or run them solo if nobody is around, which simply takes longer. Think of them as practice versions of the harder conquest dungeons later.
The tip that matters: don't claim the rewards from these story Expeditions. Claiming costs energy, and that energy is worth far more in higher-level content. This advice comes from the video, not from the patch notes. For later reference, the October 20/21 patch added Hard modes for Krao Cave and Draupnir that require item level 2600.
Dismantling gear and what not to upgrade
cheap As you level, extract old or useless gear rather than hoarding it. The game calls this Item Extraction; the confirmation in the video costs 1,000 Kina for a +5 cloak, returns materials and also unlocks the item's skin in your closet. That clears inventory and refunds part of what you spent.
skip Don't spend upgrade materials on gear from questing. You replace it within a few levels and the investment is gone.
Belt and amulet: the upgrades worth making
grind The belt and amulet are the big exception, because you keep upgrading them through Substance Morph instead of throwing them away. Enhance the piece to +10, equip it, then open Substance Morph: a +10 green item morphs into the next tier, and the next tier at +10 morphs again (blue to yellow and onward). The video's footage shows the Noble Belt recipe taking a +10 Noble Belt at a 100% success chance, limited to one morph per character, with the Revelation Amulet listed next to it.
Wings and titles for passive stats
free Whenever you get new wings, register them in the Wings menu. The video says this boosts your flight gauge, and the Lesser Daeva Wings tooltip in its footage shows why: Flight Power 2000 and HP 50 sit under Owned Effect, so you get them for owning the wings, while wearing them adds HP 200 as the Equipped Effect.
Titles work the same passive way. You can equip up to three title effects, one per category, for example a title giving a 3% PvE damage boost and 210 penetration. Don't chase titles yet; equip whatever has the best stats until level 45, then hunt the ones that suit your class. Level 45 is also where the Abyss starts to matter: the shop and event items for the Abyss in the October patch notes are gated at Lv. 45, so treat it as the end of the early game.
How this guide was fact-checked
- Source video: FrozenCloud, "Aion 2 Beginner Guide - Everything you MUST know before you play!", uploaded 2026-10-02 on the Advanced Access build.
- Official sources: NCSOFT's Steam announcements for AION 2, including the server and matchmaking notice, the illicit currency warning and the patch notes of October 6/7, October 13/14 and October 20/21, 2026. None of them changed the levelling systems this guide covers.
- From the video's on-screen UI: the Kina (1,000,000) and Abyss Points (500,000) daily limits and the 03:00 reset, the Daevanion node level requirement, the Specialty unlock levels on the Blaze tooltip, the stigma upgrade levels, the Item Extraction cost, the Noble Belt morph and the wings' Owned Effect stats.
- Corrections: the video gives level 13 for the Daevanion board, while the node tooltip in its own footage lists Required Character Level 12. The video's "equip new wings" advice is refined: the flight bonus is an owned effect, so owning the wings is what matters. The video says "Elemental Enhancement" for the Sorcerer stigma; the in-game tooltip reads Element Enhancement.
- Attributed to the video only: the level 4 skill unlock, the stigma pick list, the Monolith level 30 target and the advice not to claim story Expedition rewards.
What this guide doesn't answer
- Which class to play: class strengths need their own comparison; see a dedicated class tier list.
- Full class builds and rotations: Specialty, Daevanion and stigma meta picks differ per class and per patch.
- Abyss and PvP strategy: the Abyss is level 45 content with its own rules, entry time and rewards.
- Endgame gear and item level: Expedition (Hard), the Ariel board and item level 2600 content are beyond the first days.
- Recommended graphics and camera settings: the video points to a separate settings video, and we have not verified those values.
Frequently asked
What should I do first as a new AION 2 player?
Follow the main story, but clear the side content near you as you go: Empyrean Traces (feathers), green diamond markers, strongholds and sealed dungeons. They give skill points and upgrade materials, and skipping them leaves you stuck behind the Ascension bar later. On day one also set your auto-potion threshold, the skill macro on right click and comfortable flight and sprint keys.
At what level do the Daevanion board, Monolith and Stigmas unlock in AION 2?
The video puts the Daevanion board at level 13, though the node tooltip in its footage requires character level 12. The Monolith unlocks at level 16 and Stigmas at level 22, with stigma slots opening at levels 22, 27, 32 and 37. Expeditions also open at level 22.
How does the skill macro work in AION 2?
Place skills in rows, open the Macro tab in the skill window and select the first skill of each row you want chained. Then bind the macro key to right click under Settings, Gameplay. Holding left and right click together casts the chain and weaves basic attacks between skills. Keep self-buffs and gap closers out, and put any no-cooldown skill last.
Should I upgrade quest gear in AION 2?
No. Quest gear is replaced within a few levels, so extract it instead (Item Extraction costs a little Kina and returns materials). The exceptions are the belt and amulet: enhance them to +10 and use Substance Morph to turn them into the next tier, for example a +10 Noble Belt morphs at a 100% success chance.
Are Empyrean Traces shared between characters in AION 2?
Yes. Empyrean Traces only need to be collected once per account. On an alt, open the Monolith and press Sync Empyrean Traces to add every trace your other characters found, which levels the Monolith without re-collecting the feathers.
