Adapted from WARDOGS Assault Rifles Ranked: The S-Tier Picks + Loadouts

🎯 The core idea

The best WARDOGS loadout is the one your wallet can lose. Run the free starter rifle or the $800 AK74 until you can afford to die, then step up to the Galil with 50-round magazines, and save the full M4 kit with 60-round magazines and AP ammo for when you can survive long enough to earn back about $20,000. Put money into one good sight, one grip and one muzzle before anything else.

  • free costs nothing
  • cheap small cost
  • setup needs preparation
  • grind pays off slowly
  • skip the thing to stop doing

This loadout guide is built on Maplewood's 41-minute video "WARDOGS Assault Rifles Ranked: The S-Tier Picks + Loadouts" (uploaded 28 September 2026), where he builds a full vendor kit around every assault rifle in the game. The video was recorded in Season 01. Season 02 (Update 0.2.0, live 15 October 2026) moved more than 100 attachment unlocks, changed rifle prices and cut damage on high-calibre rounds, so every build below is checked against the official Season 02 patch notes from 14 October, and each change is named where it applies.

WARDOGS best loadout for every budget

Maplewood ranks the rifles by more than raw stats: what a full kit costs, how easy the ammo is to find on the battlefield, and how well each rifle covers close, medium and long range. These are his six builds. The kit totals are the values his vendor screen showed in Season 01; the rifle prices are the current Season 02 ones.

BuildRifle price nowHis kit total (Season 01)Core attachmentsBest for

FAL$6,000 (was $6,500)$28,8242x or 2.5x, TDG grip, brake or AR suppressor, .308 APMoney-is-no-object kit

If you only want one answer to "what is the best assault rifle in WARDOGS right now": the M4 is the strongest kit once you have its 60-round magazines, the Galil is the best value, and the AK74 is the best cheap rifle. That matches our WARDOGS tier list, which ranks every gun for Season 2; this page is about how to build the kit around them.

What Season 02 changed for rifle loadouts

setup The video predates Season 02, so here is what the patch notes changed for each rifle and the parts Maplewood uses:

ItemSeason 01Season 02
AK74Assault level 3, $10k to unlock, $1,600Default unlock with its 30-round magazine, $800
T-21Default unlock, $600Assault level 3, $10k to unlock, $1,200; the STANAG 30-round magazine now comes free with it

FAL$200k to unlock, $6,500$250k to unlock, $6,000

5.56mm hollow point (HP)WARDOG level 10WARDOG level 13
5.56mm APWARDOG level 83WARDOG level 84
Level 3 armor / helmet$2,000 / $1,500, WARDOG level 60$2,500 / $2,000, WARDOG level 70
Basic Parachute$100$500
Binoculars / Monocular$75 / $150$180 / $350
Ruck Backpack$2,400$1,600
DefibrillatorMedic level 11, $50kMedic level 22, $110k

Two damage changes matter for these builds. Assault rifle body shots now do slightly less damage across the board, and .308 lost 25% of its base damage, which hits the FAL hardest. The AK74's 5.45x39mm round was not on the calibre-cut list. On the money side, kills with an assault-archetype weapon now pay $2,000 instead of $1,500, while spotting pays about 30% less and scales with the value of the target. That last change weakens one of Maplewood's favourite ways to pay off a kit, covered further down.

Free starter rifle kit: Bushmaster, A-91 or KH-2002

free Each faction starts with its own free rifle: the Bushmaster for Lonestar, the A-91 for Valkyra and the KH-2002 for Manticore. All three fire 5.56, shoot semi-auto with a burst mode (B on PC by default) and start with 20-round magazines. Maplewood treats them as the same gun with different iron sights: the Bushmaster has the cleanest sights, the A-91 is acceptable, and the KH-2002's sights block so much of the view that he won't use it. He puts all three around C tier.

His "zero to hero" kit for when you are broke:

  • Smallest magazines, FMJ rounds, a scout bag, one backup magazine and one stack of loose ammo.
  • Bandages, the free Emergency Resuscitator, and a flex slot for two smoke grenades.
  • Tier 1 armor if you have it, a parachute, and binoculars for spotting on the way in.

He prices this at about $1,700 to $2,000. In Season 02 the same kit costs more: the Basic Parachute went from $100 to $500 and binoculars from $75 to $180. The 5.56 round is the reason these rifles work: it is the most common ammo on the field, so you can pick up magazines from dead T-21, Galil and M4 players.

T-21 budget build

cheap The T-21 is the first full-auto step up from the starters. It still fires 5.56 with 20, 30 and 60-round magazines, but has a lot of recoil. Maplewood rated it B tier in Season 01 and warns against over-investing in it: attachments can cost about half the price of the rifle, and a full attachment set takes the kit from about $5,100 to about $7,000 without making it much better. He would rather spend that money on an AK74.

If you do add parts, pick the one with the biggest effect: a cheap tactical foregrip or a muzzle brake. For a sight he prefers the Tricon 1.5x or the CQ-2x over 1.2x optics, because he puts the typical rifle fight in WARDOGS at around 75 m, where a little magnification helps. Inside 100 m, tap-fire in semi-auto or crouch and spray. The rest of his kit: a field pack, a small tac vest, tier 1 or 2 armor, two 30-round magazines, two stacks of loose ammo, five bandages, smokes and binoculars.

Season 02 makes this build harder to justify. The T-21 is no longer free (Assault level 3, $10,000 to unlock), its price doubled to $1,200, and the TopComp Brake he suggests as an early muzzle moved from Assault level 5 to level 21. On the plus side, the STANAG 30-round magazine now comes free with the rifle. Our Season 2 rankings now put the T-21 in C tier, below the AK74.

AK74 loadout: now the cheapest strong rifle

cheap Maplewood calls the AK74 controllable, easy to use and good at stopping power, and recommends it over the T-21 as the first rifle worth investing in. He placed it at the bottom of A tier. With a 2x sight, a rubberized grip and the early muzzle brake it feels like "a bit of a laser beam", and in semi-auto it works as a makeshift marksman rifle despite poor iron sights. Its weakness is ammo: it fires 5.45, which fewer players carry after the first days of a wipe.

His AK74 kit: a 2x sight, a rubberized grip (or the cheaper RK6), the CQB 74 Brake, a field or operator backpack, tier 2 armor, two or three 30-round magazines, two stacks of ammo, 10 bandages and smoke grenades in the flex slot. He puts it at about $8,600. He also finds the AK's biggest magazine awkward: the 75-round drum takes a 2x2 inventory space for only 15 more rounds than the 60-round magazine, which fits in 3x1.

Season 02 changes are mostly good news here. The AK74 is now a default unlock with its 30-round magazine and costs $800 instead of $1,600. 5.45x39mm hollow-point ammo unlocks at WARDOG level 6 instead of 16, and the 75-round drum moved from Assault level 40 to 36. The CQB 74 Brake moved later, from Assault level 8 to 16, with its unlock cost up from $12,500 to $15,000, so you no longer get the whole kit "close together" as he describes. He says the 60-round magazine came at about level 30; the patch notes don't list it.

Galil medic loadout

setup The Galil was Maplewood's favourite rifle and "an easy A+ pick": AK-like fire rate, 35-round magazines out of the box and 50-round magazines a few levels later. He prefers it to an M4 on 30-round magazines because each Galil round does more damage and a 50-round magazine lasts through two or three kills without a reload. With the horizontal recoil tamed and a good sight, he sprays reliably out to about 100 m while crouched.

His Galil build:

  • Sight: the 2.5x, or the Tricon 1.5x or a 2x if you don't want the ADS slowdown.
  • Grip: the RK6 or rubberized grip for vertical recoil, or the Mini Angled Foregrip if horizontal kick bothers you more. He estimates 80 to 90% of the recoil you notice is vertical.
  • Muzzle: the Hexagon Brake for strong horizontal recoil reduction.
  • Kit: two or three 50-round magazines, loose ammo, a side pack full of bandages to heal teammates, defibrillators, adrenaline pens, two smokes and a small tac vest with tier 2 armor.

His screen shows $16,082 and 29.1 kg before he jumps. Once the parachute is used he lands at 26.6 kg, which he says is just under the heavy threshold, so he can still tactical sprint.

For Season 02, the Galil is $200 cheaper, the Hexagon Brake moved from Assault level 2 to level 5 with its unlock cost up from $5,000 to $12,500, and the 2.5x Combat Optic is now an Assault level 17 unlock (it was WARDOG level 26). The Tricon 1.5x went the other way, from Assault level 12 to WARDOG level 26. The defibrillators in this kit now need Medic level 22 and $110,000, so check our WARDOGS medic guide before planning around them.

M4 loadout with 60-round magazines

grind Maplewood calls the M4 a laser and the DPS king, with a clearly faster time to kill than the AK and Galil. His problem with it is the unlock order: on 30-round magazines it runs dry mid-fight, so he kept going back to the Galil until he had the M4's 60-round magazines. With them he rates it S tier, and by his numbers the rifle costs only about $400 more than the Galil.

His full M4 kit:

  • 5.56 AP ammo, three backup 60-round magazines and four stacks of loose ammo, because the M4 eats ammo.
  • Level 3 armor, a tac vest and a parachute. This pushes the kit into heavy, and he says staying medium is not realistic, so commit to heavy and carry stims for movement.
  • AP rounds also go through Humvee and helicopter windows, which he uses to kill drivers and pilots.

His screen shows $19,732. For a cheaper version, drop to 30-round magazines, standard grips and barrels, and FMJ instead of AP; he estimates FMJ alone saves about $4,000. Play your first minutes safe to earn back the kit value before you get aggressive.

Season 02 makes this kit a longer grind. The M4 moved from Assault level 20 to 28 and its unlock cost rose from $100,000 to $150,000. 5.56mm AP now sits at WARDOG level 84, and level 3 armor and helmets moved from WARDOG level 60 to 70 and cost $500 more each. The good part: assault-archetype kills now pay $2,000, so an M4 that gets kills pays back faster. Our WARDOGS assault guide covers the fastest road to Assault level 28.

FAL high-roller loadout

skip In Season 01 the FAL was Maplewood's money-no-object pick: full-auto .308 that melts at close range, matches the M4 and Galil at mid-range and still threatens at long range when you tap-fire. He placed it above the AK74 but not in S tier, because the kit is so expensive and .308 is hard to find on the field.

His FAL build: a 2x or 2.5x sight, the TDG grip if you spray (an angled foregrip if you mostly tap-fire), and either a recoil brake or the AR suppressor, which he prices at about $1,300 and likes for hiding your position and muzzle flash. Add three 20-round .308 AP magazines, lots of loose ammo, meds, stims and a high-capacity defib battery. His screen shows $28,824 and 42.0 kg, which is super heavy; he drops both smoke grenades or the suppressor to get back under the limit.

Season 02 hit this build harder than any other. .308 lost 25% of its base damage. The FAL keeps the highest per-shot damage of any assault rifle, but the patch notes say it now sits closer to the TCX-SPR and M4, and it now ranks B in our Season 2 rankings. The rifle is $500 cheaper, but it costs $250,000 to unlock. The AR Multi-Caliber Suppressor moved from Assault level 21 to 29 ($22,500 to unlock), and the Recon brakes he mentions moved later too: the Constrictor Brake from level 23 to 34 and the Three Port Brake from 36 to 49. He says the TDG grip unlocks around level 56; the patch notes don't list it. Unless you are rich and your squad keeps you supplied, the M4 build gives more for less.

Best optics for assault rifles

setup Maplewood's sight rule is simple: a little magnification beats a red dot in WARDOGS, because most rifle fights happen around 75 m. His picks, with where they unlock in Season 02:

OpticWhy he uses itSeason 02 unlock
2.5x Combat OpticHis favourite on the Galil and FAL; 100 to 300 m zeroing, moderate ADS speed penaltyAssault level 17 (was WARDOG 26)
CQ-2x Prism Combat ScopeBudget 2x for the T-21 and AK74Assault level 12 (was 17)
Tricon 1.5x Compact Prism ScopeNo ADS slowdown worth worrying aboutWARDOG level 26 (was Assault 12)
3x Tactical Prism ScopeSome players run a 3x on the AK74Assault level 33 (was WARDOG 31)

The 2.5x tooltip on his screen lists 2.5x magnification for close to mid-range and a 100 m to 300 m zeroing range. If you want a reflex sight, Season 02 moved the Kobra Reflex down to WARDOG level 4 and the Holographic Sight to Medic level 6.

Best grips: vertical or horizontal recoil

cheap Grip choice comes down to which kick bothers you more. Maplewood's estimate is that 80 to 90% of the recoil you notice is vertical, but the horizontal share is what ruins long sprays.

  • RK6 Tactical Foregrip: moderate vertical recoil, spread and sway reduction, moderate ADS speed penalty. The default answer for most players.
  • Mini Angled Foregrip: strong horizontal recoil reduction, plus faster ADS and equip speed, at 0.08 kg. Best if you pull down well with the mouse.
  • TDG: his spray grip on the FAL and Galil, but a late unlock.
  • Rubberized grip: his pick on the AK74.

Season 02 made two Assault grips easier to reach: the CQR Tactical Front Rail Grip moved from level 38 to 14 and its unlock cost fell from $25,000 to $10,000, while the AFG Angled Foregrip moved to Medic level 11. The RVG Vertical Foregrip went the other way, to Assault level 38 at $25,000. Most grips and muzzles also got up to a third cheaper per purchase.

Best muzzles and suppressors

cheap This is the closest thing to a WARDOGS attachments tier list the video gives, grouped from Maplewood's calls:

TierAttachmentWhy
Top pickHexagon BrakeStrong horizontal recoil reduction, minor spread reduction, small ADS penalty
Top pick2.5x Combat OpticBest all-round rifle sight for 75 m fights
StrongRK6 Tactical Foregrip, Mini Angled ForegripCover vertical or horizontal recoil
StrongCQB 74 Brake (AK74)Makes the AK74 a laser with a 2x
SituationalAR Multi-Caliber SuppressorHides your position and flash; heavy and expensive
SituationalThree Port Brake, Constrictor BrakeGood on the FAL but late Recon unlocks
Skip early1.2x optics, large magazines on cheap riflesToo little benefit for the cost or weight

On suppressors, he says they make a gun harder to pinpoint and keep the sound from travelling as far, though he doesn't know the exact distances. They are heavy and expensive, and on the FAL he would skip one before giving up smokes. Season 02 muzzle unlocks for rifle users: Birdcage Flash Hider Assault level 2 ($5,000), Hexagon Brake 5, 3 Prong Flash Hider 8, CQB 74 Brake 16, PBS-4 Suppressor 19, TopComp Brake 21, RC-556 Suppressor 24 (now $1,310), TGP-A Suppressor 5.45 level 27 and AR Multi-Caliber Suppressor 29.

Backpack, tac vest and weight limits

setup Weight decides how far you can push a kit. On every build Maplewood checks the weight bar, and he points out that the Basic Parachute is a big part of it: once you jump, the parachute is gone and you can drop from heavy back to medium.

He recommends the small tac vest over bigger vests. The Medium Tac Vest tooltip lists quickslots 5 to 8 and a moderate reload speed increase, but he says the faster reload is only animation speed, and with the bigger vest he kept hitting a bug where the rifle reloads over and over after a sprint or mantle. He hoped it would be fixed in Season 02; the Season 02 patch notes don't mention it, so treat the small vest as the safe pick until you see otherwise.

For backpacks, Season 02 cut the Ruck Backpack from $2,400 to $1,600, the Gunner Backpack + Sling to $2,400 and the Arsenal Backpack + 2 Slings to $4,000. Remember the parachute rule changed too: it opens slower and won't open below about 10 m, so don't wait until the last second.

Paying back the kit: defib battery, healing and spotting

cheap Maplewood builds his expensive rifle kits around medic income, and says M4 medic loadouts are "money printers" if you stay with your team.

  • High-capacity battery: after buying, drop the standard battery and pay for the high-capacity one in the vendor. It is 2 kg, but in his kit it holds 250 charge against 100 for the standard battery, which at 25 charge per revive means 10 revives instead of 4.
  • Healing: he fills a side pack with bandages and heals anyone who takes a shot, because healing pays.
  • Spotting: he buys binoculars or a monocular on every kit and spots everything from the helicopter. Spotting the same thing pays up to three times with diminishing rewards.

Season 02 weakens the spotting part: rewards are about 30% lower and now scale with what you spot, while binoculars cost $180 and the monocular $350. His line that you can make back half your kit by spotting alone was a Season 01 claim. Kills with assault rifles now pay more, so the balance has moved toward fighting. Our WARDOGS money guide compares the current ways to earn.

How this guide was fact-checked

  • Official patch notes (win over the video): the Season 02 patch notes (14 October 2026) for every unlock level, unlock cost and vendor price in this guide, the .308 damage cut, the assault rifle body-shot change, the $2,000 assault kill reward, the spotting reward cut and the parachute changes. Update 0.1.2 and the two October hotfixes were also checked; none of them touch rifles or attachments.
  • Steam announcements: the faction starter rifle names (Lonestar Bushmaster, Valkyra A-91, Manticore KH-2002).
  • WARDOGS Wiki on Fandom: its weapons page confirms the Bushmaster M17S as a 5.56 semi/burst rifle. It has no attachment or progression data, so attachment stats come from the in-game tooltips shown in the video.
  • From the video's own demonstration: every build, the kit totals and weights on his vendor screens, the attachment tooltips (2.5x Combat Optic, RK6, Mini Angled Foregrip, Hexagon Brake, Medium Tac Vest, high-capacity battery) and his tier calls. These are his Season 01 opinions.
  • Corrections and changes named in the text: the AK74 is now a free default at $800 and its 5.45 round was not part of the calibre cut; the T-21 is no longer free and costs $1,200; the M4 now needs Assault 28 and $150,000; the FAL lost damage with the .308 cut; the TopComp, CQB 74 and Hexagon brakes and the Tricon 1.5x now unlock later; parachutes and binoculars cost more; spotting pays about 30% less. His claims about the TDG grip unlocking around level 56 and the AK74 60-round magazine around level 30 are not in any official source and are attributed to him.

What this guide doesn't answer

  • Exact damage and time-to-kill numbers. The patch notes give percentages, not damage tables, and the video doesn't measure TTK.
  • Full Season 02 kit prices. The kit totals are Season 01 vendor values; we list each price change rather than guess new totals.
  • TCX-SPR builds. The new Season 02 assault rifle isn't in the video, so there is no tested build to report.
  • SMG, LMG and sniper loadouts. This page covers assault rifles only.
  • Unlock levels for the Galil, its 50-round magazine and the M4 60-round magazine. Neither the patch notes nor the wiki list them, and the video only gives rough estimates.

Frequently asked

What is the best loadout in WARDOGS right now?

It depends on your budget. In Season 2 the strongest full kit is the M4 with 60-round magazines, 5.56 AP ammo and level 3 armor (about $19,700 in Maplewood's build). The Galil with 50-round magazines, a 2.5x sight, a grip and the Hexagon Brake is the best value at about $16,000, and the $800 AK74 is the best cheap rifle.

What is the best assault rifle in WARDOGS?

The M4 is the strongest assault rifle once you have its 60-round magazines, but it now unlocks at Assault level 28 for $150,000. The Galil ($2,000) is the best value and the AK74 ($800, unlocked by default) is the best budget pick. The FAL lost ground after Season 2 cut .308 damage by 25%.

What are the best attachments in WARDOGS?

For assault rifles: a 2x to 2.5x sight such as the 2.5x Combat Optic or CQ-2x (most fights are around 75 m), the RK6 Tactical Foregrip for vertical recoil or the Mini Angled Foregrip for horizontal recoil, and the Hexagon Brake for strong horizontal recoil reduction. Suppressors are situational because they are heavy and expensive.

What is a good cheap loadout in WARDOGS?

Run the free faction starter rifle (Bushmaster, A-91 or KH-2002) with FMJ, one backup magazine, bandages, the free Emergency Resuscitator, a parachute and binoculars. Or buy the AK74, now a default unlock at $800, with a 2x sight, a grip and the CQB 74 Brake for an early-game kit.

What did Season 2 change for WARDOGS loadouts?

Season 2 (Update 0.2.0, 15 October 2026) made the AK74 a free default at $800, moved the M4 to Assault level 28 and the T-21 to level 3 at $1,200, cut .308 damage by 25%, moved over 100 attachment unlocks (for example the Hexagon Brake to Assault 5 and the 2.5x Combat Optic to Assault 17), raised the Basic Parachute to $500 and cut spotting rewards by about 30%.
