🎯 The core idea
WARDOGS rewards patience more than aim in your first hours. Your cash carries over between matches, so every life is a purchase you want to earn back: join a busy server, buy a cheap kit you can afford to lose, get into the control zone, stand in the hot zone, and earn from spotting, healing and reviving while you learn the gunfights. Season 02 moved several starter unlocks, so the checklist below is current as of October 2026.
- free costs nothing
- cheap small cost
- setup needs preparation
- grind pays off slowly
- skip the thing to stop doing
This WARDOGS guide for beginners follows Arekkz Gaming's 51-minute new player walkthrough (recorded in Season 01, uploaded 24 September 2026) and checks every number against the official Season 02 patch notes from 14 October 2026. Where the game changed since the video, the text says so in place. If you only want to know how to play WARDOGS in one sentence: up to 100 players split into three teams fight over one zone, and the team with the most bodies in it scores.
Picking a server and a team
free Hit Deploy and you now choose between Official, Community, Infantry Mode and Low-Level servers (the Low-Level and Infantry Mode options were added in update 0.1.2 to point newer players at gentler lobbies). In the server list, switch on the two orange quick filters that hide full and empty servers, then click the Players column twice to sort high to low. The video's trick is to pick a server sitting around 80 to 90 out of 100: busy enough for a real match, but not so full that you wait in a queue. Season 02 also added maximum-ping tags and filters to the browser, and official servers now kick players who stay above the region's ping limit for a sustained period, so filter by ping as well.
On the faction screen you pick Valkyra, Lonestar or Manticore. If a server is just starting and the team you want shows as greyed out, keep clicking it; the video's creator got in that way. In Season 01 the developers said the blue team had the lowest average win rate. Season 02 answers that with a one-season experiment: Lonestar gets a cash and XP win bonus plus teamplay multipliers, and any team that falls at least 40 points behind second place gets 20% off at the vendor. Late team switching is now restricted too: once a team is more than 10 points ahead you cannot switch again for 15 minutes after joining one, and if you join mid-match your map stays obscured until you first reach the control zone.
Joining an empty server and helping it fill up also pays now: Season 02 gives seeding players rewards and a vendor discount once the match begins.
How a match is won: control zone and hot zone
free Press M to open the map. Each team spawns in its own corner, and the large circle is the control zone (the wiki puts it at 2×2 km). Every 30 seconds, the team with the most players inside the zone earns one point, and the first team to 100 points wins. The score sits in the bottom-right corner along with how many players each team has in the zone. Matches can run long; the video mentions games going past an hour.
The smaller circle inside the zone is the hot zone. Every player standing in it counts as two for the headcount, and the wiki notes it also pays double cash. Ten teammates in the hot zone count as twenty. Towers you hack and drill rigs built at a FOB can drag the hot zone toward them, which is why late-game fights collapse onto fortified positions. You don't need to run any of that yet. Your job as a new player is simpler: get into the zone, stay alive, and stand in the hot zone when you safely can.
Persistent cash and your first gun
cheap Next to your spawn is a vendor with a gun icon (weapons, gear, attachments) and, usually a bit further away, one with a vehicle icon. Almost everything costs cash: guns, magazines, ammo, bandages, vehicles. You start with $10,000 according to the wiki, and whatever you earn in a match (kills, time in the zone, revives, destroying enemy gear) goes into one bank balance that persists between matches. Anything you die with in the field is lost. So the main rule from the video holds: try to leave each match with more cash than you brought. The full picture of earning is in our guide to making cash fast; here, the point is just to keep your early kits cheap.
You start with the first weapon in most categories. The free assault rifle (the Bushmaster M17S, $0 per the wiki) is semi-auto or burst only, which makes it a no-risk learning gun but not a strong one.
Season 02 correction: the video's headline recommendation, the AMP-9 SMG for $900, no longer applies to a fresh account. The AMP-9 now unlocks at Medic level 20 ($75,000 to unlock) and costs $1,375 per purchase. The guns that now come unlocked by default are the PP-19 Bizon SMG ($1,000, with a 53-round magazine) and the AK74 assault rifle (its price dropped from $1,600 to $800, and its 30-round magazine is included). Either fills the role the AMP-9 filled in the video: a cheap automatic gun you can afford to lose while you learn.
skip Don't spend on a sidearm early. The video only recommends one if you run a bolt-action sniper rifle. Its favourite, the fully automatic GGX 18, moved from WARDOG level 70 to level 85 in Season 02 and now costs $125,000 to unlock.
Magazines, loose ammo and ammo types
cheap After you pick a gun, you also pick a magazine and an ammo type. There are three ammo families:
| Ammo | What it's good at | Downside |
|---|---|---|
| FMJ | All-rounder, available from the start | Struggles against heavy armor |
| Flesh damage (HP) | Very strong against unarmored players and limbs | Does almost nothing to armor and helmets |
| Armor piercing (AP) | The answer to level 3 and 4 armor | Weaker against unarmored body parts, unlocks late |
Start with FMJ. The video suggests trying flesh ammo while aiming at legs and arms if you're used to that habit from other tactical shooters. Season 02 shuffled the unlock levels: 9x19mm flesh ammo now unlocks at WARDOG level 10 (was 6), and 5.56mm AP at level 84 (the video shows 83).
A good starting setup from the video is three magazines (one in the gun, two in the backpack) plus a stack of loose ammo. On the weapon screen, hover over your ammo and Ctrl+click to add loose rounds to your backpack; a 9mm stack holds 100 rounds and takes far fewer slots than extra magazines would. After a fight, press C in your inventory to "combine ammo" and refill empty mags from the loose stack, reload, then press C again to fill the one you just took out.
You'll need a backpack for the spare mags. New players start with the pouch and the scout backpack; bigger packs have a large one-off unlock cost and then a much smaller purchase price. Season 02 cut several backpack prices: the Ruck from $2,400 to $1,600, the Gunner Backpack + Sling from $3,500 to $2,400.
Armor, vests and the parachute
cheap On the Gear tab you'll find helmet, armor, vest, backpack and a traversal slot for a parachute. Armor and helmets go from level 1 to level 4; buy what you have unlocked. Tactical vests don't add storage. They add quick slots and speed up reloads and equipping, which is useful once you carry grenades or a hammer.
Higher armor got a little weaker in Season 02: level 3 armor and helmets now reduce damage by 50% (was 55%), level 4 by 60% (was 65%), and the level 3 helmet and armor moved from WARDOG level 60 to 70. The level 4 helmet now muffles audio and proximity chat, narrows your field of view and fogs up when you sprint. Level 3 and 4 helmets do resist suppression much better (68% and 80%).
The video's habit of always carrying the $100 basic parachute is still sound, but the price is not: the basic parachute now costs $500 (the sport parachute dropped from $1,000 to $700). More on why you still want one below.
Bandages, smokes and other items
free Check the Recommended tab under Items. In the video it offers an emergency resuscitator for free, which revives downed teammates much faster than doing it by hand. Take it.
cheap Bandages stack up to five. The video recommends at least five per life: each heals only around 40, and you'll use them after nearly every fight. The individual first aid kit is a full heal in about the same time as a bandage, at $800 instead of $200 in the video; it now unlocks at Medic level 10. The adrenaline pen (unlimited tactical sprint, lower weight class) moved to Medic level 16.
Smoke grenades confuse a lot of new players. The white smoke is the real cover smoke. The coloured ones are signal grenades that drop a marker on the map for your whole team: red for hostiles, others for friendlies, damaged vehicles or alerts. Don't buy a coloured smoke expecting cover.
skip Skip the Forward Operating Base item for now. It fills most of a backpack and cost $7,500 at the Season 01 launch, and you don't get that back by placing it. When and where a forward base is worth it is covered in the building section below.
Role tracks and how unlocks work
grind Press Tab and open Progression. WARDOGS has no fixed classes: you have an overall WARDOG level plus six role tracks (Assault, Medic, Recon, Support, Pilot, Driver), and each one levels from the things you actually do.
| Track | How the video levels it | Season 02 notes |
|---|---|---|
| Assault | Kills with assault rifles | Now also gets XP for destroying buildables and IED/C4 use; C4 and the remote detonator moved here at level 4 |
| Medic | Healing and reviving other players | Healing yourself gives nothing; defibrillator moved from level 11 to 22 ($110,000 unlock) |
| Recon | Snipers, marksman rifles, spotting | Scout Rifle headshots now one-shot a target with no helmet |
| Support | Supply runs with trucks | Artillery XP now goes to Driver instead |
| Pilot | Flying people into the zone, then attack helicopters | Repair XP for aircraft now lands here |
| Driver | Logistics runs in a Ural truck | New Wolf-110, T-72B3 and Flakpanzer Gepard unlocks |
Season 02 made the early grind much shorter: reaching role level 20 now takes 111,500 XP instead of 250,000, and level 10 takes 25,000 instead of 35,000. Many attachments also moved to earlier levels. The video calls levelling slow; that's less true now, but expensive items like helicopters still take a while.
Getting to the control zone without walking
setup The zone can be several kilometres from your base (3.3 km in the video). Walking takes ages. Your options:
- Spawn vehicle. In the video, once any team passes 20 points an armored spawn vehicle appears. Every base has a station with a spinning satellite dish; if it's spinning, the vehicle is alive and you can press F to spawn on it after a 10-second timer. It has a personal cooldown of around 10 minutes in the video, so dying fast means finding another way in. After a team switch or a mid-match join, Season 02 locks you out of the spawn vehicle until you've reached the zone once.
- A ride. Teammates with helicopters ferry players in, and pilots honk with H. When you jump, watch the altitude bar on the right and press Space before it reaches red. Season 02 made this stricter: parachutes take longer to open, won't open below about 10 m, and opening below roughly 50 m at speed means fall damage. Pull earlier than the video does.
- Drive. The vehicle vendor sells quad bikes, Kodiak trucks and the Ural. A vehicle you buy spawns locked; press L to cycle between locked, unlocked and squad-only.
The video's tip for Driver and Support XP is a Ural supply run: press B in base, buy pallets, drive to a friendly FOB in the zone, drop the pallets with G, then hold F to unload them. Season 02 halved the base pallet reward ($2,500 to $1,250) but added delivery streaks worth +$250 and +100 XP per consecutive pallet, up to 10. Only the building pallet is still unlocked by default: the mechanical, ammo and fuel pallets now unlock at WARDOG levels 5, 9 and 16. The video's warning still applies: if four trucks are already doing runs, a fifth one is hurting your team.
Your first fights: refilling mags and moving quietly
free Footsteps are loud in WARDOGS. In the video, even walking near an enemy gives the creator away, and one fight ends against a five-player squad he never had a chance against. Move between cover, and check the map for nearby teammates before taking a fight you can't win alone. Season 02 rain helps attackers here: heavy thunder is loud enough to mask footsteps, and every player on the server hears the same strike at the same moment.
Shoot from cover, then refill your mags with C before moving on. The video's creator likes flash hiders and suppressors because the muzzle flash gives you away; Season 02 made several flash hiders much earlier unlocks (the Birdcage Flash Hider is now Assault level 2, the Eclipse Flash Hider Medic level 1) and cut most muzzle and grip prices by up to a third. Near-miss suppression was also rebuilt and is much stronger from small and medium calibres, so shots that miss you still matter.
Bandage others when you can. In the video, healing a teammate earns cash and Medic XP, while healing yourself earns nothing, so swapping bandages with a nearby teammate pays you both.
When you go down: bribes, drags and the damage log
free Going down isn't the end. A bleed-out bar decays slowly, and you can wait a long time for a revive. While you're down, enemies can loot your body, including your bandages and gun. Your options, as shown in the video:
- F1 bribes your team: each press adds $50 to a reward, up to $500, paid to whoever revives you. It shows on the map for everyone on your team. On controller, Bribe moved to X in Season 02.
- E calls for help; hold F to give up and respawn.
- B opens the damage log: every hit you gave and took, with body location, damage and distance. Use it to work out where a sniper was.
When a teammate goes down in the open, press F (or use the scroll wheel) to drag them into cover before reviving. A revive takes a while without the resuscitator, and reviving in the open is how you both die. Once you're back up, F1 also tips whoever revived, healed or transported you.
After respawning, the Rebuy Last Loadout button at the vendor restocks your previous kit in one click. Season 02 replaced the old pop-up with the full vendor screen, so you can add or remove items before paying.
Spotting with binoculars
cheap The video's best early earner is a pair of binoculars. Look through them and hold left click on enemy soldiers, helicopters, vehicles, crates or FOBs to mark them on the map for your whole team. If a marked target dies, you get cash and Recon XP. That makes spotting the easiest way to level Recon early, especially since the starting sniper rifle is weak.
Two Season 02 corrections: binoculars now cost $180 (was $75), and spotting rewards are about 30% lower and now scale with the value of what you spotted. A tank or a helicopter pays more than a rifleman. The video shows $400 from a few seconds of spotting; expect less for infantry now. It's still worth carrying binoculars in your utility slot on every life.
Test gear free in the firing range
free Under the Deploy button is Firing Range. Everything at its vendor is free, including weapons you haven't unlocked yet, so you can try guns, optics and ammo types without spending a cent. Levers move the targets and change their armor level.
The video's test shows why armor matters: unarmored targets (players have 100 health) drop almost immediately, level 2 armor takes about seven body shots, and level 4 armor soaked around 11 to 12 FMJ rounds from an SMG. Level 4 armor is a little weaker since Season 02, but the lesson stands: once players have level 3 and 4 armor, AP ammo is what you're working toward. Controller players can also tune aim assist on the range dummies now; the strength slider is in Settings > Controller > Advanced.
Small-hammer building basics
setup A small hammer and some build supplies let you place sandbags, barbed wire, hedgehogs and recon tents anywhere. Bigger items like Hesco blocks need a FOB radius. Hold right click to open the build menu, place an item, then hit it. Each item shows an X critical spot; hitting the X builds much faster than hitting anywhere else, and the video recommends backing off as far as you can while swinging so the X stays within reach.
Season 02 rebalanced building: critical spots give a smaller bonus, the medium hammer contributes less per swing, doors cost 80 build supplies (was 22) and gates 200 (was 85). Barbed wire no longer gives cash or XP on kills. Hammers can no longer breach doors and gates, while the Halligan bar now breaches both (the video says it struggles with gates; that's no longer true).
A cheap trick the video likes: a recon tent built inside a bush is nearly invisible from a few metres away, a good hide for a marksman. And whenever you walk through a friendly FOB gate, close it behind you. Season 02 even pays $75 for closing a friendly FOB door. Airlocks, wall types and C4 counts are covered in our forward operating base guide.
What the October update changed since this video
The video was recorded in Season 01. Season 02 (update 0.2.0) went live on 15 October 2026, and these are the changes that matter most to a new player:
| In the video (Season 01) | Now (Season 02) |
|---|---|
| AMP-9 unlocked by default, $900 | Medic level 20, $75,000 unlock, $1,375 to buy; PP-19 Bizon and AK74 are the default picks |
| Basic parachute $100 | $500, opens slower, fails below about 10 m |
| Binoculars $75, high spotting payouts | $180, spotting about 30% lower and scaled to target value |
| Pallet run $2,500 base | $1,250 base plus up to 10 streak bonuses of $250 |
| Ammo, fuel and mechanical pallets free | WARDOG levels 9, 16 and 5 |
| Defibrillator Medic level 11, $50,000 | Medic level 22, $110,000 |
| C4 and detonator in Support | Assault level 4 |
| Role level 20 at 250,000 XP | 111,500 XP |
| Level 3/4 armor 55%/65% reduction | 50%/60% |
| Halligan bar weak against gates | Breaches doors and gates; hammers can't |
| Free team switching | Locked for 15 minutes once a team leads by 10+ points |
Season 02 also added four weapons (TCX-SPR, PP-19 Bizon, Evo-3 Ultra, M14), four vehicles, the Molotov, rain weather, a team-kill forgive or punish vote, and a Wager vendor that opens later in the season. The full list is in our WARDOGS Season 2 patch notes breakdown.

How this guide was fact-checked
- Official patch notes (win over the video): Season 02 patch notes (14 October 2026) for every price, unlock level, armor value, parachute, spotting, logistics, building and team-switching change named above; update 0.1.2 (30 September 2026) for the Deploy server types; the Season 01 changelog (9 September 2026) for the $7,500 FOB price.
- WARDOGS Wiki on Fandom: control zone size, 100-point win condition and 30-second scoring, the hot zone's double headcount and double cash, the $10,000 starting cash, the three faction names and the free Bushmaster M17S. The wiki's Progression and Equipment pages are still stubs, so unlock levels come from the patch notes only.
- From the video's own on-screen demonstration: server browser filters, vendor flow, Ctrl+click loose ammo and C to combine, smoke colours, the spawn vehicle appearing after 20 points and its roughly 10-minute cooldown, F1 bribes ($50 per press, $500 cap), the B damage log, the firing range test results, the build X critical spot and the recon tent trick. These were not in any official source and are attributed to the video.
- Corrections made: the AMP-9 is no longer a default unlock or $900; the basic parachute costs $500, not $100; binoculars cost $180, not $75; spotting and pallet payouts are lower than shown; the defibrillator moved to Medic 22; the Halligan bar now breaches gates; 5.56mm AP moved to WARDOG 84; the GGX 18 moved to WARDOG 85; level 3/4 armor reduction dropped by 5 points.
- Dropped: the video's rough guesses at flesh and AP damage multipliers, and its exact backpack unlock costs, because no official source confirms them.
What this guide doesn't answer
- Which gun is best overall. Weapon rankings shift every patch and belong in a tier list, not a first-day primer.
- Flying helicopters. Piloting needs its own controls setup and practice; this guide only covers riding along and jumping safely.
- FOB layouts, drill rigs and tower hacks. These are team-level strategy; the forward base guide linked above covers them.
- Graphics and performance settings. Not covered by the source video.
- The Wager vendor. It hasn't opened yet in Season 02, so there's nothing to test.
Frequently asked
How do you play WARDOGS as a beginner?
Up to 100 players split into three teams fight over a control zone. Every 30 seconds the team with the most players inside it scores a point, and the first to 100 wins. As a beginner, buy a cheap kit, get into the zone, stand in the hot zone (each player there counts double) and earn by spotting, healing and reviving teammates.
What is the best starting weapon in WARDOGS Season 2?
The AMP-9 that older guides recommend now unlocks at Medic level 20 and costs $1,375. On a new account, the default PP-19 Bizon SMG ($1,000, 53-round magazine) and the AK74 rifle ($800) are the cheap automatic options. The free Bushmaster M17S rifle is semi-auto or burst only, so use it for no-risk learning lives.
Does money carry over between matches in WARDOGS?
Yes. Cash you earn in a match goes into one bank balance that persists between matches, and you start with $10,000. You pay for nearly everything, including magazines, bandages and vehicles, and you lose whatever you die with, so try to leave every match with more cash than you brought.
How do you get to the control zone fast in WARDOGS?
Spawn on your team's spawn vehicle from the base station when its dish is spinning, catch a helicopter ride from a teammate, or buy a vehicle. If you parachute in, open early: since Season 2 parachutes open more slowly, won't open below about 10 m, and opening below roughly 50 m at speed causes fall damage.
What changed for new players in WARDOGS Season 2?
The AMP-9 is no longer a default unlock, the basic parachute costs $500 instead of $100, binoculars cost $180 and spotting pays about 30% less, pallet runs pay less base cash but add streak bonuses, and role level 20 now needs 111,500 XP instead of 250,000. Late team switching is also restricted.
