ARAM Mayhem Guide: Augments, Rules and Tips to Win

How ARAM Mayhem works in October 2026: when you pick augments, how tiers and rerolls work, what the new Journey to Stardom Headliners change, and practical tips on Flash, last hitting, health relics and closing games. Checked against the wiki and patch notes up to 26.21.

🎯 The core idea

ARAM Mayhem is regular ARAM plus augments: you pick one at spawn and more at levels 7, 11 and 15, with one reroll per card. As of patch 26.21 (October 2026) the mode is live, runs the "Journey to Stardom" release with a random Headliner rule every game, and is on Howling Abyss only until 26.22. Win by picking augments that fit your champion, tracking Flash, last hitting and closing games fast.

How ARAM Mayhem works and whether it's live right now

ARAM Mayhem launched on October 22, 2025 as a limited Featured Game Mode and was kept because players loved it. It's still in the queue in October 2026: patch 26.21 (released October 20–21, 2026) brought a new Mayhem release called "Journey to Stardom". If you are reading this after 26.21, check the latest patch notes before queuing, because Riot has changed this mode almost every patch.

Everything from normal ARAM still applies. You get a random champion, everyone fights down one lane, you can't recall, the fountain doesn't heal you, and you can only shop at spawn or after dying. If you want to know how classic ARAM and ARAM Mayhem differ, these are the changes the wiki lists for Mayhem:

RuleClassic ARAMARAM Mayhem
RunesNormal rune pagesDisabled; some keystones only come from augments
AugmentsNoneOne at spawn (level 3), then at levels 7, 11 and 15
ExhaustAllowedDisabled
Extra base statsNoneBonus health, armor and magic resist that grow with level
Nexus health5,5003,000
Nexus turret health1,8003,000
Health relic beam heal16% of missing health and mana22% of missing health and mana
Crowd controlNormalCombo Breaker: stacking tenacity, and a cleanse plus 3s CC immunity after 5 of the last 7 seconds spent immobilized

Maps in 26.21: Mayhem normally rotates between Howling Abyss, Butcher's Bridge and Koeshin's Crossing. Riot's 26.21 notes say Butcher's Bridge and Koeshin's Crossing are out of Mayhem queues for this patch while their concert stages are built, and should return in 26.22. Most of the video's clips were recorded on Koeshin's Crossing (the pink-tree map above), so expect the snowy Howling Abyss for now.

Augment picks: levels, tiers and rerolls

free The first augment screen opens the moment you spawn at level 3, so you choose before the first minion wave arrives. After that you get one screen each at levels 7, 11 and 15. That's how ARAM Mayhem works at its core: four main augment slots, plus a fifth slot that only a few special augments use.

Rules for each pick, from the wiki:

  • Three cards per screen. Each card can be rerolled once to another augment of the same tier, so you see up to six options.
  • Tiers are Silver, Gold and Prismatic. Every player gets the same tier on a given screen, but which tier is random each time. Your first two screens can't both be Silver.
  • No repeats. Once an augment has appeared on one of your screens, it won't come back later in that game.
  • Picks need shop access. The screen only opens when you're dead or standing in your spawn's shop range. If you hit level 11 mid-fight, you get the pick when you next die or walk back. Since 26.06 it also won't open while you're in combat.

skip Don't stay out at low health on purpose to avoid a pending pick. A level 7 augment you haven't taken is power you're leaving on the table. When a fight is lost, dying fast and picking is often better than a long walk back.

Augment set bonuses are gone. Earlier in 2026, some augments belonged to themed sets (Archmage, Firecracker, Dive Bomb and others) that gave an extra set bonus for holding two or more. Patch 26.12 removed this trait system and added ability-upgrade and quest augments instead. Older ARAM Mayhem set bonus and "aram augment sets" combo lists no longer match the game.

Journey to Stardom: the Headliner rules in patch 26.21

Since 26.21, every Mayhem game has one random Headliner, a band that adds a twist to the rules. Riot's patch notes list these:

HeadlinerWhat changes
K/DACollect 4 K/DA Cards to earn an extra augment
HEARTSTEELAugments can roll with special modifiers that make them stronger
True DamageTakedowns and destroyed towers can drop Anvils for your team
PentakillPower up one of your abilities at the start and again at level 18
DiscoDancing under the disco ball earns gold for your whole team
Cafe CutiesHealth relics are especially strong
BeesPick up honey pots and dodge the bees flying across the map
Command LineEvery selection lets you reroll one augment into a higher tier

The K/DA Headliner is the nearest thing to an ARAM Mayhem free augment: collect four cards and you get an extra pick. Under Disco, dancing at mid is a real gold source and not just etiquette, so read the Headliner banner before you decide whether to "break the dance" (more on that below).

26.21 also removed 13 augments, including High Roller, Dropkick, Ult Bot, DropBear, Poro Stampede and Hide on Bush. If a tier list or combo guide recommends one of those, it was written before October 2026.

Best augments and combos by champion type

We're not publishing an ARAM Mayhem tier list here on purpose. 26.21 swapped dozens of augments and Riot is re-tuning which augments each champion gets offered (26.18–26.20). A ranking made today would be out of date within one or two patches. A sturdier way to pick the best augments in ARAM Mayhem is to match the card to how your champion actually deals damage:

Champion typeLook forExample augments (wiki text)
Spell-spamming magesAbility haste, refunds, ability critsArchmage (Prismatic: casting refunds 30% of another ability's cooldown), Arcane Axiom, Jeweled Gauntlet
MarksmenAttack speed, on-hit, rangeBig Shot, Third Times The Harm, Hands Off The Talent
Tanks and engageHealth, value from crowd controlGoliath (35% bonus health, 15% adaptive force), Courage of the Colossus (shield when you immobilize)
EnchantersHeal and shield powerAll For You (30% stronger heals and shields on allies), Group Hug, Enchanting Butterflies
Dash-heavy fightersDash cooldowns, resistsDashing (175 haste for dash abilities), Outlaw's Grit

ARAM Mayhem combos come from stacking two augments that feed the same stat. Flashy (three Flash charges) unlocks Flashbang (Flash explodes and slows). Ability-upgrade augments stack well with haste augments on the same spell. If a card says "converts" (ADAPt, Tickle Monster, No Mana No Problem), check that your items actually give the stat it converts first.

skip A correction to the video: its creator mocks the "become bigger" and "become 77% smaller" picks as joke augments. The real ones aren't jokes. Goliath is a Prismatic augment that adds 35% bonus health and 15% adaptive force on top of the 50% size increase. Giant Slayer is a Gold augment that makes you 75% smaller (not 77%), gives 20% bonus movement speed and up to 30% bonus damage against larger champions. Take them when they fit your champion, not because they look funny or because someone said not to.

For the best ARAM Mayhem champions: everyone is random, so learn a few simple kits that work in any team. Our easiest champions for every role list doubles as a good ARAM comfort pool.

Champion select: rolls, bench swaps and the blessed third card

free Champion select is the same as regular ARAM. In the first 15 seconds you get two random champion cards from your pool, and sometimes a "blessed" third card. Then there's a 45-second finalization phase where anyone can swap to a champion on the shared bench, as long as they own it. Your pool is your unlocked champions plus the current and last four free rotations, up to 100 champions.

Practical ARAM tips for champ select:

  • Swap toward at least one engage tool and one ranged poke champion. ARAM fights happen in one lane, so a team with no way to start fights loses slowly to poke.
  • Mayhem changes some champion numbers on top of ARAM's. 26.20, for example, buffed Bard's Meeps (67% AP ratio, 5-second recharge). Champions like Garen, K'Sante and Lee Sin also have Mayhem-only ability tweaks on the wiki.
  • If you're new to League itself, play classic ARAM a few times first. Mayhem's augments make it harder to learn what a champion does on its own.

The mid-lane dance and the opening all-in

The video's first "rule" is to break the dance: when both teams are dancing at mid at the start, you all-in. The creator shows a Jinx bait where the enemies were dancing, his team was still in base, and the play only worked once Pantheon followed up.

What the clip actually shows is the practical lesson. A level 3 all-in with no follow-up is a coin flip, and every early death hands the enemy kill gold and a numbers advantage. If you want to fight at 0:30, ping first and make sure your team is out of the base gate. Otherwise dancing is a free way to watch who burns Flash.

The video's option B is to dance along and track any Flash the enemy wastes. That one holds up. It's also polite, and Disco Headliner games even pay gold for it. Whether you break the dance is your call. It's an unwritten ARAM Mayhem rule, not a game rule, and nothing in the game punishes either choice.

Tracking Flash: it's about 2:56 in ARAM, not 5 minutes

setup Flash has a 300-second cooldown on Summoner's Rift. Every ARAM map gives all champions +70 summoner spell haste, which cuts that to about 176 seconds, roughly 2 minutes 56 seconds. The video's advice to treat Flash as a 3-minute timer is close enough to use. It doesn't mention where the number comes from, though, and some Mayhem augments change it:

  • Flash 2 (Silver) swaps a summoner spell for Flash and adds another 70 summoner spell haste.
  • Flashy (Silver) gives Flash 3 charges with a 120-second recharge.

So a player with Flashy has Flash back much sooner than any timer you're keeping. Look at the enemy's augments on the scoreboard (hold Tab) before you dive on a "no Flash" target. When you spot one, the best window is when your team has its ultimates up, not just "when you hit level 6". In Mayhem, everyone starts at level 3 and gains 5 XP per second, so level 6 comes quickly for everyone.

Portals, dives and shutdown gold

skip The video's third rule is about map portals: don't take every one just because someone says "you have to go through". It's right that a portal isn't a free engage. On Koeshin's Crossing the Bloom Portals behind your Nexus only go one way, toward your own outer turret (or inhibitor turret once the outer one falls), and the side portals are a fixed route the enemy can watch. On Howling Abyss the frost-gates in front of spawn work the same one-way way, and Butcher's Bridge uses Cannon Launchers.

The video gives two conditions for using a portal to dive: a guaranteed kill with a way out, or a target worth a big shutdown. It names 700 gold. That figure fits the wiki's bounty rules. An ARAM champion kill is worth 180 gold, and a fed player's bounty can grow up to 600 above that, so a big shutdown can be worth up to about 780. Early on, all bounties are cut to 50–100% depending on game time, so early shutdowns are worth less.

The goal is to win ARAM, not to die alone. A death means 11 to 40 seconds of respawn time, depending on your level. Your team then plays 4v5 for that long.

Last hitting: the 6-gold rule

grind The video is right that you should last hit in ARAM, but one number in it is wrong. According to the wiki, when an enemy minion dies within 1,250 units of you and you didn't land the killing blow, you get 6 gold. The video says you get "a third" of the minion's value. That's roughly true for a caster minion (17 gold in ARAM) but far off for a siege minion (52 gold), where 6 is about a ninth.

Its "2,000 to 2,500 gold lost per game" figure shows on screen with the caption "I made it up", and the wiki has no number like that, so treat it as a guess. The direction is right, though. On top of the passive 60 gold every 10 seconds (from 1:00) and the 1,400 starting gold, last hits are the gold you control. Siege minions spawn every second wave from the third wave on, so those are the last hits to prioritize.

Every champion should last hit when it's free, tanks and supports included. Just don't take a cannon from your marksman when they're standing right there.

Health relics: when to take them and when to wait

free Health relics replace fountain healing in ARAM. The video gets the timing right but misses how the heal works. From the wiki:

  • The first outer relics spawn at 1:45 and the first inner relics at 2:30. Each one respawns 90 seconds after its beam strikes, and the scoreboard shows the timers.
  • The player who picks it up heals 8% of missing health and mana right away.
  • 2.5 seconds later, a beam heals everyone in an 850-unit area. That's 16% of missing health and mana in classic ARAM and 22% in Mayhem. The beam heals champions of both teams.

So you don't have to wait for teammates to "take it with you". They only need to be inside the circle when the beam lands. Ping the relic (the video does this, and the frame shows the "Allied Outer Relic – spawning in" pings), take it when the hurt allies are close, and be careful with relics near enemies, since the beam heals them too. Take it in front of a low-health ally only if they're already in the circle. The "show dominance" grab from the video just wastes 90 seconds of healing for your own team.

Under the Cafe Cuties Headliner, relics are even stronger, so timing them matters more in those games.

Ending the game: the Nexus has only 3,000 health

free The video's fifth rule is to end when you can, and it holds up. In Mayhem the Nexus has 3,000 health, down from 5,500, and the two Nexus turrets have 3,000 instead of 1,800. Once the turrets fall, a few seconds of full-team damage ends the game. Champions also deal up to 25% bonus damage to structures as the game goes on. ARAM respawn timers top out around 40 seconds, so a team that waits at the fountain gives the enemy a free fresh teamfight.

If you're losing instead, surrender opens at 8:00 and needs 4 of 5 votes.

How this guide was fact-checked

The source is "The UNSPOKEN Rules of ARAM Mayhem" by Is that jg diff, uploaded October 5, 2026. It's a short, deliberately provocative video of six etiquette "rules" with clips from several maps and some clips credited to a fails channel. We kept the parts that hold up as strategy and checked every number against the official League of Legends Wiki (ARAM, ARAM: Mayhem, ARAM: Mayhem/Augments, Health Relic, Flash, Howling Abyss, Butcher's Bridge and Koeshin's Crossing pages) and Riot's patch notes for 26.13 through 26.21 (October 20, 2026).

Corrections and additions:

  • Minion gold: the wiki gives a flat 6 gold for nearby minion deaths, not "a third" of each minion's value. The video's 2,000–2,500 gold figure is captioned "I made it up" in the video itself, so we don't repeat it as fact.
  • Flash: the 3-minute timer is about right because of ARAM's +70 summoner spell haste (300s down to about 176s). The video doesn't mention that Flash 2 and Flashy change it.
  • Health relics: the beam heals everyone in the area, including enemies, 2.5s after pickup. It's 22% of missing health in Mayhem. Respawn is 90s from the beam.
  • Size augments: Goliath and Giant Slayer are real, useful augments, not joke picks. Giant Slayer shrinks you by 75%, not 77%.
  • Shutdowns: the 700-gold example fits the wiki's bounty cap of 180 plus up to 600.
  • Added from the wiki and patch notes: augment levels, tiers and reroll rules; Mayhem stat changes; Nexus health; set bonuses removed in 26.12; the 26.21 Headliners, new augments, removed augments and map availability.

We describe example augments in our own words from the wiki's text, and the wiki's augment list can lag a patch behind.

What this guide doesn't answer

  • A full ARAM Mayhem tier list or augment ranking. 26.21 replaced a large part of the pool, so any ranking now would be guesswork. Check live stat sites a week or two into the patch.
  • ARAM build guide for every champion. LoL builds change with each champion's Mayhem modifiers and your augments. Item choice per champion is out of scope here.
  • Battle pass and cosmetic details. Players searching for an ARAM Mayhem battle pass usually mean the Mayhem progression. 26.21 replaced the old 32-level Mayhem Progression Track with band missions and Superstar Ranks that unlock augments, emotes and orange essence. The notes don't list a paid tier or the full reward list, so we don't guess at them.
  • When Mayhem leaves the queue. Riot hasn't announced an end date. The For the Win "Journey to Stardom" challenge runs October 22 to November 13, 2026.
  • Summoner's Rift and the 2026 season. For what changed on the main map this year, read our League of Legends Season 2026 changes guide.

Frequently asked

How does ARAM Mayhem work?

ARAM Mayhem is regular ARAM (random champions, one lane, no recall, shop only at spawn or when dead) plus augments. You pick one augment from three cards when you spawn at level 3, then again at levels 7, 11 and 15, and each card can be rerolled once. Runes and Exhaust are disabled, champions get bonus health and resistances, and the Nexus has only 3,000 health.

Is ARAM Mayhem still available in 2026?

Yes. As of patch 26.21 (October 2026) ARAM Mayhem is live with the Journey to Stardom release, which adds a random Headliner rule to every game. For patch 26.21 it is played on Howling Abyss only; Riot says Butcher's Bridge and Koeshin's Crossing return to Mayhem in 26.22. No end date has been announced.

Do ARAM Mayhem augment set bonuses still exist?

No. Augment sets such as Archmage, Firecracker and Dive Bomb, which gave a set bonus for collecting two or more augments from a group, were removed in patch 26.12 together with the whole augment trait system. Riot added ability-upgrade and quest augments instead, so older set bonus combo lists no longer apply.

What are the Headliners in ARAM Mayhem?

Since patch 26.21 each Mayhem game has one Headliner band that changes a rule: K/DA gives an extra augment for 4 K/DA Cards, HEARTSTEEL adds augment modifiers, True Damage drops Anvils on takedowns and towers, Pentakill powers up an ability at the start and at level 18, Disco pays gold for dancing, Cafe Cuties boosts health relics, Bees adds honey pots and Command Line lets you reroll an augment into a higher tier.

How long is the Flash cooldown in ARAM?

About 176 seconds, roughly 2 minutes 56 seconds. Flash has a 300-second cooldown, but every ARAM map gives all champions 70 summoner spell haste. In ARAM Mayhem the Flash 2 augment adds another 70 haste, and Flashy gives Flash 3 charges with a 120-second recharge, so check the enemy's augments before trusting a timer.
