Path of Exile Trading Guide: Buy, Sell and Trade Currency

🎯 The core idea

Path of Exile has no auction house. Every trade is a person-to-person handshake: you find the item on the official web trade site, the site writes a whisper for you, you paste that whisper into the game, you meet the other player in their hideout and you swap the goods by hand. Learn that one loop — search, whisper, meet, verify, accept — and both halves of trading, buying and selling, are the same five steps with the roles reversed.

Read this before you follow a single step. The source video was published in November 2021, during the Scourge league — it is roughly four and a half years old. The trade loop it teaches (search, whisper, meet, trade) still describes how Path of Exile trading works, but the trade site has been redesigned more than once since, stash tab prices have moved, and the game has since gained a Currency Exchange that did not exist when this was recorded. Treat every screenshot below as a diagram of the workflow, not a picture of your screen. Where a step is likely to have drifted, there is a note saying so.

What trading in Path of Exile actually is

New players open the game, see a Trade chat channel, and assume that is where trading happens. It is not. Trade chat is where trading goes to die. The narrator's first instruction is to turn it off — and to turn general chat off with it, which he compares to the Barrens in 2005.

The real market lives on a website. Your public stash tabs get scraped into it, other players search it, and the site hands out a copy-pasteable whisper so buyer and seller can find each other in game. That is the entire system. Everything else in this path of exile trade guide for beginners is detail hanging off that one fact.

How to buy items in Path of Exile

Buying is the half you should learn first, because you can practise it with twenty chaos and nothing to lose.

The league dropdown in that screenshot reads "Scourge" — a league that ended in early 2022. The control is still there and still the single most common beginner mistake, but the names inside it change every few months. Pick whatever league your character is actually in.

Cutting the list down with filters

The demonstration is a small one — hide corrupted items so you do not buy something you cannot modify — but it is the gateway to every other search you will ever run. The same panel is where sockets, links, item level and influence live.

Likely stale: the exact click path. In this 2021 capture the corrupted toggle sits inside a group called "Miscellaneous", alongside era-specific fields like Scourge Tier and an Ultimatum filter group. The groups have been renamed and reshuffled since. Look for the concept, not the coordinates.

Poe whisper trading: contacting the seller

Each listing gives you the price, who is selling, how long ago they listed it, and a button that copies a ready-made whisper to your clipboard. In the screenshot the button has already flipped to "Copied!" — the message is now sitting in your clipboard waiting for the game.

How to sell items in Path of Exile

Selling has a paywall in front of it, and the video is honest about that in a way most beginners find out the hard way. You cannot list anything for sale from a normal stash tab. You need a premium stash tab, and premium tabs come from the microtransaction shop.

Two routes exist: buy a fresh premium tab outright, or upgrade a tab you already own, which is much cheaper. In the recording the narrator quotes 40 points to buy and 15 points to upgrade — and the panel on screen shows an upgrade marked down from 15 to 10, because he happened to be recording during a stash sale.

Likely stale: those point prices. Stash tab pricing and bundle contents have changed since 2021, and the numbers visible in the screenshot are sale prices on top of that. Check the in-game shop rather than trusting either figure.

Poe stash tabs trading: making the tab public

Right-clicking the tab's name opens its properties. Three things matter: the Public toggle, which is what actually pushes your items onto the trade site; the name, because that name is quoted in every whisper you receive; and the pricing mode, which decides whether you price items one by one or slap a single price on the whole tab.

Likely stale: the layout of this dialog. Name, Public, colour and pricing mode are all still there, but options have been added around them since 2021. Expect the panel to look different and the toggles to be in different places.

Path of exile price check: what to charge

The pricing method is the same website you bought from, used backwards: search your own item, see what comparable ones are listed at, and pick your number. The narrator bought a pair of boots for 19 chaos, decided he did not want them, and relisted at 15 chaos specifically to move them fast. Undercutting is the price of speed.

The feedback loop is whisper volume. One whisper an hour means you priced it about right. Four whispers in ten seconds means you left money on the table, and you can pull the item, reprice it, and put it back.

Handling the whisper when someone wants to buy

The incoming whisper is more useful than it looks. It names the item, the agreed price, the league, the stash tab it came from and the exact grid position inside that tab — left 1, top 1 in the example. You never have to hunt for what somebody is buying.

Path of exile scam avoidance in two habits

There is no elaborate scam-detection section in this video, and it does not need one, because the two checks that stop almost everything are already baked into the trade loop.

The first is on the buying side: before you press accept, read the item in the window and confirm it is the item from the listing, not a similar-looking one with worse rolls. The second is on the selling side: hover the currency the buyer has placed and count it, because a stack of 19 and a stack of 9 look nearly identical in a hurry. Both checks take two seconds. Skipping them is how people lose a divine orb and write an angry forum post.

One thing the video does not cover, because it barely existed in 2021: listings that are never meant to sell. Price-fixing scripts list items far below market with no intention of answering a whisper, purely to distort the cheapest-first sort. If the two cheapest listings ignore you, that is normal — skip them rather than assuming your whisper failed.

Path of exile currency exchange: the gap in this video

The video ends with a joke that has aged into the most important thirty seconds in it. The narrator tries to swap bulk currency — "Hi, I'd like to buy your 590 Chaos Orb for my 4 Exalted Orb" — pastes it to a dozen different sellers, gets one automated do-not-disturb reply and nothing else, and signs off with "why won't anybody trade with me".

That was the state of poe currency trading in 2021: bulk swaps were the same manual whisper loop as item trading, only worse, because you were interrupting somebody mid-map for a transaction neither of you cared about.

This is the video's biggest gap, and it is a gap rather than an error. Path of Exile has since added a Currency Exchange — an actual bulk market for swapping one currency for another, with orders that fill without either player being online or typing anything. It did not exist when this was recorded, so the video cannot mention it, and nothing in the footage above tells you it is there. If you came here for path of exile bulk trading, do not copy the workflow in this section: look up the Currency Exchange first, and only fall back to whispering a human for things the exchange does not cover.

The prices in that clip are museum pieces too. Four exalted orbs for 590 chaos was a real Scourge-league rate; it tells you nothing about what anything is worth now, and the currency that anchors the high end of the economy is not the same one it was in 2021. Use live price data, never a number from a video.

What has changed since this video, item by item

The workflow survived. The pixels did not. Here is what to double-check before you follow along:

• The Currency Exchange exists now. The entire bulk-currency ending of the video describes a problem that has since been solved by an in-game market. Biggest single omission.
• The trade site has been redesigned. Filter groups have been renamed and reordered; the corrupted toggle is not guaranteed to be where the screenshot puts it, and era-specific groups like Ultimatum filters and Scourge Tier are long gone.
• The league dropdown lists whatever leagues are live today, not Scourge and Hardcore Scourge.
• The short link poe.sale is what the narrator types on camera. If it no longer resolves, go straight to pathofexile.com/trade.
• Stash tab prices quoted as 40 points to buy and 15 to upgrade are 2021 figures, and the on-screen ones are discounted sale prices.
• The stash tab options dialog has gained options since; Name, Public, colour and pricing mode are still the ones that matter.
• Trade macros go unmentioned. The top-voted correction in the comments is blunt: "You really should get a trade macro to simplify most of these steps. Almost everyone uses awakened poe trade." The manual Ctrl+V loop works, but it is the slow path, and the video never says a faster one exists.
• Live search goes unmentioned even though the button is visible on screen at 0:55 — you can have the site alert you the moment a matching item is listed instead of refreshing by hand.
• Consoles are a different game. Commenters point out that the console versions have an in-game market interface the PC version does not. And Path of Exile 2 has its own separate trade site; none of the screenshots here map onto it.

Where to go next

Trading is only useful if you have something to trade.
