Deadlock Shiv Guide: Dash Build, Rage & Killing Blow

How to play Shiv in Deadlock after the September 16 patch and the City Never Sleeps map rework: every ability with wiki numbers, a skill order, a dash-reset build by phase and how to counter him.

🎯 The core idea

Shiv is a durable diver who wins fights by keeping his rage bar full. Bleed enemies with Serrated Knives, dash through them with Slice and Dice, soak burst with Bloodletting, then finish low targets with Killing Blow. The strongest late-game Shiv build is a dash build: Torment Pulse plus Compress Cooldown on Slice and Dice, so one good dash refunds its own cooldown in every team fight.

  • free costs nothing
  • cheap small cost
  • setup needs preparation
  • grind pays off slowly
  • skip the thing to stop doing

Who Shiv is and how Busted Flush works

Shiv is a melee-range bruiser who fights in and out of the enemy team, builds rage, and cleans up kills. The deadlock.wiki infobox lists 830 base health, 6.5 m/s move speed and 3 stamina, which makes him one of the tankier divers. He is often called hard to learn, mostly because his movement relies on his gun's recoil, but the reward is a hero who can fight almost anyone once his rage is online. This Deadlock Shiv guide covers his abilities, ability upgrades, skill order, items, laning and late game, with every number checked against the wiki as of October 2026.

His gun, Busted Flush, is a shotgun. The primary fire shoots six pellets in a fixed S-shaped pattern with a tight spread, 10 ammo per clip and damage falloff from 20 m to 41 m. Because the spread is tight, it lands at medium range, so it is good for clearing waves and for hitting last hits (confirms) and denies on soul orbs.

The alt fire is the real tool. It shoots 12 pellets in a diamond and knocks Shiv backwards. The wiki says each alt-fire shot uses 4 ammo but still fires at full damage when the clip has less than that. The September 16, 2026 patch raised alt-fire base damage by 4% and its per-boon growth from +0.2 to +0.24, so it is a slightly better damage tool now than when the video was recorded.

Alt-fire recoil movement and slide tech

setup The alt-fire knockback is what makes Shiv a nimble tank, but it follows awkward rules. The video explains them well and they match what you see in game:

  • Firing in the same direction you are already moving does not speed you up. It cancels your speed in that direction, so you stop dead.
  • Fire just before you gain a lot of speed (for example, at the start of a wall jump) or fire at an angle to the direction you are travelling.
  • Firing at an angle while strafing the same way adds knockback and bends your path slightly.
  • Per the video, the alt fire resets your slide friction window for about 0.75 seconds, so chaining slide, jump and right click keeps your momentum going.

Two limits from the wiki: Slowing Hex and other movement silences remove the knockback entirely, and the knockback has been trimmed several times over 2025 and 2026. If a jump that works in an old clip falls short today, that is why.

Rage: Shiv's real ultimate

Shiv rage is the passive half of his ultimate, Killing Blow, and it only switches on once you unlock that ability. Dealing damage to enemy heroes (and to their barriers) fills a 10-point meter. Only a full bar does anything. At 80% or 90% you get no bonus at all.

At full rage, the wiki lists:

Full rage bonusValue
Damage bonus+8% (+24% total with Killing Blow tier 2)
Move speed+2 m/s, only with Killing Blow tier 1
Serrated Knives3.5% of target's current health on impact, 28% slow on bleeding targets
Slice and DiceAn echo retraces the dash and hits again
BloodlettingDefers an extra 15% of incoming damage

The video says full rage always gives move speed. The video's own on-screen card and the wiki both say that only comes with the tier 1 upgrade of Killing Blow.

Rage starts to drain after 12 seconds without damaging a hero, then drains at 0.25 points per second. Any damage resets that timer, so one bleed tick on one enemy keeps you enraged for a whole fight. Rage gain scales with your damage, so it takes about the same number of shots, knife ticks or melees to fill the bar at minute 5 as at minute 40. Headshots build rage 1.65 times as fast as body shots. The wiki also lists a few items that do raise rage per cast: Extra Charge, Rapid Recharge, Arcane Surge and Surge of Power for imbued abilities, plus Close Quarters, Point Blank, Long Range, Sharpshooter and Opening Rounds for gun damage. Melee is the fastest builder. The wiki notes a bug that gives every heavy melee a fixed 2.85 points, so roughly four heavy melees fill the bar.

Serrated Knives: bleed stacks and rage upkeep

free Serrated Knives throws a knife that applies a stacking bleed. Every knife adds its own damage-over-time effect and refreshes the bleed timer on all stacks. Wiki numbers:

Serrated KnivesValue
Charges2, with a 16 s cooldown per charge
Bleed10 DPS per knife for 5 s
Tier 1 (1 point)+2 s bleed duration
Tier 2 (2 points)+2 charges
Tier 3 (5 points)+12 bleed DPS and higher spirit scaling
Full rage3.5% current-health damage on impact, 28% slow

Changed since the video: the video (and the card in this frame) says that at full rage your knives ricochet to the nearest enemy. The September 16, 2026 patch removed the ricochet. Knives now deal 3.5% of the target's current health on impact and slow bleeding targets. That also kills the video's trick of bouncing knives off troopers, Haunts and soul wards.

How to use them:

  • Throw knives early in a fight on as many heroes as you can. A few stacks across two or three enemies is usually enough to fill rage on its own.
  • Bleed can be cleansed, so bait the enemy's dispel or cleanse with one or two knives before you dump every charge.
  • Extra knives refresh the bleed timer but do not add time to it. Spacing your throws gives more total damage and keeps rage up longer. If the target is running or hiding behind cover, just stack them fast.
  • skip Throwing knives at troopers or Haunts. At 16 seconds per charge you want them for heroes. Knives can confirm a soul orb, but the wiki says that does not refund the charge.

Slice and Dice and dash resets

Shiv's Slice and Dice is a forward dash that deals spirit damage to everything in its path and lowers their spirit resist. At full rage, an echo of Shiv runs the same path a moment later and hits again, adding another stack of resist shred.

Slice and DiceValue
Damage75 spirit damage (1.2 spirit scaling)
Dash range12 m
Spirit resist shred-6% per hit, 14 s
Cooldown16 s
Tier 1 (1 point)-6 s cooldown
Tier 2 (2 points)-4% more spirit resist shred, +2 m range
Tier 3 (5 points)+50 damage, -2 s cooldown per hero hit

Tier 3 is one of Shiv's biggest power spikes. Each hero you hit (the echo counts too) takes 2 seconds off the cooldown. The video's card shows an 8-second cap, which matches the wiki's history note from September 2025. With tier 1 and Compress Cooldown the dash sits around 8 seconds, so a dash that hits three or four heroes plus the echo comes back almost at once. That is a dash reset, and it is why the dash build is Shiv's strongest late game build.

The shred is the other reason. With tier 2, each dash hit shreds 10% spirit resist, and the echo applies another 10%. The video says these two stack to a full -20% instead of the usual multiplied total of 1 - (0.9 × 0.9) = -19% (the video's card rounds this to -18%). The wiki confirms the stacks stack and each lasts 14 seconds, but has no note on how they combine, so treat the exact total as the video's claim. Either way the shred also helps your teammates' spirit damage.

Two more tips from the video: if the dash itself fills your rage bar on its first hit, the echo still triggers. And Slice and Dice has full vertical control. With one wall jump and one air jump it lets you climb buildings, which makes it a strong escape.

Bloodletting: deferred damage and when to press it

Bloodletting is why Shiv is so hard to burst. A share of every hit you take is held back and dealt over time instead, shown as orange on your health bar. Pressing the ability clears part of that held-back damage. Only the active has a cooldown. The passive is always on.

BloodlettingValue
Damage deferred25% over 6 s (40% at full rage)
Active: deferred damage cleared30%
Cooldown25 s
Tier 1 (1 point)-15 s cooldown
Tier 2 (2 points)+40% deferred damage cleared
Tier 3 (5 points)+15% damage deferred

The wiki adds that Bloodletting counts as healing, so healing items make the active clear more (the video names Healing Booster and Healing Tempo), and enemy anti-heal makes it clear less. Damage to barriers is not deferred.

free The most common mistake is forgetting the active exists. If you see a big orange chunk on your health bar, press it. Radiant Regeneration also heals you every time you cast an ability, so with it, the Bloodletting active works like a flat heal on top of the clear.

Shiv Killing Blow: execute threshold and recast

Shiv's Killing Blow leaps forward and deals 200 spirit damage to the first enemy hero it reaches. If that hero is below the health threshold, it executes them instead (the execute counts as pure damage). A kill fully refills rage and lets you recast the ultimate.

Killing BlowValue
Damage200 (no spirit scaling listed)
Execute threshold18% of max health (28% with tier 3)
Range12 m (18 m with tier 1)
Cooldown145 s, +30% if no hero is hit
Recast after a kill16 s
Tier 1 (1 point)+6 m range, +2 m/s move speed at full rage
Tier 2 (2 points)+16% full-rage damage bonus, -25 s cooldown
Tier 3 (5 points)+10% execute threshold

Changed since the video: the narration says you get 20 seconds to recast after a kill. A patch on July 28, 2026 cut that to 16 seconds, and the video's own on-screen note says so.

Shiv passes through heroes he cannot execute, dealing the 200 damage to them, and also damages troopers and Haunts along the way. That means he cannot be body-blocked. Within about 25 m, heroes you can execute show a red aura and a cracked heart icon. The 200 damage never scales, but in lane it is a lot, and the video argues it is worth using just for damage even when no one is in execute range. skip Never ult a Victor whose own ultimate is ready. You will waste it and probably die.

What changed in the patches since the video

The video went up on August 5, 2026, after the June 30 Soul Urn and Unstable Rift update. Since then three updates matter for Shiv:

  • July 28, 2026: Killing Blow recast window down from 20 s to 16 s. The video already flags this on screen.
  • September 16, 2026: Knives lost the full-rage ricochet and now deal 3.5% current-health damage on impact. Alt fire got +4% base damage. The same patch cut Decay's damage by 25% (with 20% more duration), Radiant Regeneration's heal-on-cast growth from 2 to 1.7 per boon, and Trophy Collector from 18 to 16 souls per minute.
  • September 29, 2026 (City Never Sleeps): the whole map was rebuilt and neutral camps became Haunts. The gameplay in this video, including the Apothecary and Park Ave streets, is on the old map, so ignore any route or angle it shows. Shiv's abilities did not change in this update.
  • October 5 and 14, 2026: no Shiv changes. October 14 lowered Radiant Regeneration's spirit scaling from 0.04 to 0.035.

The overall plan (knives for rage, dash for damage and shred, ult for picks) is unchanged. A Shiv build for City Never Sleeps is the same core as the video's, with the item notes below.

Shiv skill order and ability upgrades

Ability tiers cost 1, 2 and 5 points. The video does not give an exact order. This order follows its power spikes: tier 3 knives for the mid game, then tier 3 dash for the late game.

OrderPickWhy
UnlockSerrated Knives first, then Slice and Dice and BloodlettingPoke from range, wave clear with the gun
UnlockKilling Blow as soon as you canRage does not exist until you unlock it
1Serrated Knives tier 1, then tier 2Two more charges are your lane and early fight damage
2Slice and Dice tier 1, Bloodletting tier 1Cheap cooldown cuts, more dashes and clears
3Killing Blow tier 1 and tier 2Bigger rage bonus, -25 s cooldown, longer leap
4Serrated Knives tier 3The video's mid-game spike
5Slice and Dice tier 2, then tier 3Shred, then dash resets
6Killing Blow tier 3, Bloodletting tiers 2 and 3Execute at 28%, more sustain

For a knife build, finish knives first and keep Slice and Dice at tier 1. For a dash build, push Slice and Dice to tier 3 before Killing Blow tier 3.

Shiv laning on the new map

cheap Shiv's lane is weak compared with his mid and late game, so your job in Shiv laning is to farm safely. Stay at range, throw a knife every time one is ready, and use the gun to clear waves, confirm your souls and deny theirs. Don't dive until you have unlocked Killing Blow, and build rage before you go in. Entering a fight already enraged gives you the damage bonus, the echo dash and the stronger Bloodletting from the first second.

Good early items, per the video:

  • Mystic Regeneration (800): regen whenever you deal spirit damage to heroes, which your knives do constantly.
  • Cold Front (1,600): a big burst of damage and a 48% slow for dives.
  • Healbane (1,600): 35% anti-heal on your spirit damage, plus a 275 heal when a hero dies under it. Anti-heal is good into nearly every lineup, and the heal pairs with Killing Blow.
  • Extra Charge, Mystic Burst, Extra Regen, Monster Rounds (800 each): solid early picks, mix them to taste.

The video also lists Radiant Regeneration as a lane item, but it is a 3,200 tier 3 upgrade of Mystic Regeneration, so treat it as your first big purchase rather than an early lane buy. Lane layouts, Haunts and trooper timings changed with the map rework, so read our Deadlock laning guide and map guide for the City Never Sleeps specifics.

Best Shiv build in Deadlock (October 2026)

This is the best Shiv build for Deadlock right now, based on the video's item path with the wiki's current costs and names. The video says "Mystic Reaver", but the item is Mystic Reverb.

PhaseShiv itemsNotes
Lane (800 to 1,600)Mystic Regeneration, Extra Charge, Mystic Burst, Extra Regen, Monster Rounds, Healbane, Cold FrontSustain plus early burst
Early mid (about 4,800 spirit)Radiant Regeneration + Cold Front or Mystic VulnerabilityGet these before Torment Pulse
Mid counters (about 4,800)Healbane + Warp Stone, Dispel Magic, Metal Skin or Spirit ResilienceOr any three 1,600 items you need
Dash coreTorment Pulse (3,200), Compress Cooldown on Slice and Dice (1,600)With dash tier 3, this unlocks dash resets
Knife core (alternative)Rapid Recharge (3,200), duration items, Superior CooldownFalls off earlier than the dash build
Late damageEscalating Exposure, Mystic Reverb on Slice and Dice, Arctic Blast, Scourge6,400 each
Late defenceInfuser, Ethereal Shift, Spellbreaker, Plated Armor6,400 each, pick for the enemy team

Item notes, all checked on the wiki:

  • Torment Pulse deals spirit damage to the two closest enemies within 9 m every 1.4 s and adds 100 health. It keeps your rage, Escalating Exposure stacks and anti-heal running. Decay can replace it if you struggle to build rage, but it lost 25% damage on September 16, so Torment Pulse is the better pick.
  • Escalating Exposure stacks 4.5% spirit amp per stack on your target (up to 12 stacks). Bleed ticks, the dash and Torment Pulse stack it fast, and it amps your own spirit damage only, not your team's. Combined with dash shred, it gives big burst.
  • Mystic Reverb on Slice and Dice adds a 32% slow, 22% imbued lifesteal and a delayed hit of 50% of the damage around the target. The slow makes the echo easier to land.
  • Arctic Blast is the 6,400 upgrade of Cold Front.
  • Ethereal Shift gives 4 s of invulnerability. The video says it also lets most of your orange deferred damage run out harmlessly and dodges big ultimates like Lash's or Dynamo's.
  • Trophy Collector fits Shiv because he plays for kills, but it is weak in a losing game and was cut to 16 souls per minute on September 16.

As your souls grow, buy counter items before stacking more damage. For general item logic, see the Deadlock item shop guide.

Shiv late game build and team fights

Shiv shines in the late game. After lane, his income comes mostly from kills and assists rather than farming, so join fights. In every fight the order is the same:

  1. Fill rage with knives on several heroes.
  2. Dash through the group, then let the echo follow, shredding spirit resist each time.
  3. Let Torment Pulse and bleed keep your rage and Exposure stacks up.
  4. Press Bloodletting whenever the orange bar gets large.
  5. Finish anyone in execute range with Killing Blow and recast for the next one.

Even when you don't cast it, a ready Killing Blow scares enemies into backing off early. Stay with your team and keep looking for picks: respawn timers get longer late, so each kill matters more. For the bigger picture of when to fight and push, see the Deadlock macro guide.

Shiv tips: knives, climbing and small habits

These Shiv tips come from the end of the video, checked against the wiki where it has the facts:

  • free Always build full rage in fights. It is technically your ultimate.
  • free Use the Bloodletting active. Many Shiv players forget it because the ability is mostly passive.
  • grind Keep knife charges ready. The video points out that even with Rapid Recharge and Superior Cooldown it takes over a minute to get every knife back from zero, so don't spend them on troopers or camps.
  • setup Use Slice and Dice plus one wall jump and one air jump to climb buildings and escape.
  • cheap Use Killing Blow for its flat 200 damage in lane when it would win a trade.

Shiv counter: how to beat Shiv

If you are fighting a Shiv, or worried about what shuts yours down, these are the counters the wiki and the video point to:

  • Anti-heal. The wiki says Bloodletting is affected by healing modifiers, including anti-heal, so Healbane and other healing cuts weaken his main defence.
  • Slowing Hex. It disables Slice and Dice, Killing Blow and his alt-fire knockback, which takes away most of his movement.
  • Cleanse and debuff resist. Knife bleed and dash shred can be dispelled, and debuff resist shortens them. This is why the video says knife builds fall off: a few items hard counter them.
  • Spirit resist. Spellbreaker, Spirit Resilience and other spirit resist items blunt his dash, knives and Torment Pulse.
  • Stay out of execute range. Heal or back off before you drop to 18% health (28% against a tier 3 Killing Blow). A red aura and cracked heart on your character means the Shiv can execute you.
  • Hold your Victor ult. Per the video, a Victor with his ultimate ready is a bad target for Killing Blow.

To see where Shiv sits against the rest of the cast, check our Deadlock tier list.

How this guide was fact-checked

  • From deadlock.wiki (Shiv page, Shiv update history, item pages and patch notes, read October 19, 2026): base stats, Busted Flush stats, every ability value and tier upgrade, rage decay and build rules, item costs and effects, and the July 28, September 16, October 5 and October 14 patch changes.
  • From the video's own demonstration: the alt-fire movement rules and the 0.75 s slide window, the item path and build order, the Ethereal Shift and Victor tips, the dash-echo rage trick, and the -20% combined shred claim. These are attributed in the text where the wiki has no matching note.
  • Corrections made to the video: knives no longer ricochet at full rage (now 3.5% current-health damage on impact, since September 16, 2026). Killing Blow recast is 16 s, not 20 s. Full-rage move speed needs Killing Blow tier 1. "Mystic Reaver" is Mystic Reverb, "hell blade" is Healbane, and Radiant Regeneration is a 3,200 tier 3 item, not a lane buy. Decay, Radiant Regeneration and Trophy Collector have been nerfed since recording. Knife bounces off troopers, Haunts and soul wards no longer work.
  • Map: all gameplay frames are from the pre-City Never Sleeps map. No map-specific route from the video is repeated here.

What this guide doesn't answer

  • Exact City Never Sleeps lane matchups for Shiv. The video predates the September 29 map rework and no newer Shiv-specific source covers them yet.
  • Corrupted and Enhanced item variants. The wiki lists them, but they change often and would double the length of the build table.
  • Street Brawl drafting. That mode has its own item pool, separate from this standard-mode build.
  • Hero-by-hero matchups. Beyond the Victor tip, the video doesn't test specific lane opponents, and we won't guess.
  • Patches after October 19, 2026. Any later balance change to Shiv or his core items can shift these numbers.

Frequently asked

What is the best Shiv build in Deadlock right now?

The strongest Shiv build in October 2026 is the dash build. Get about 4,800 souls of spirit items first (Radiant Regeneration plus Cold Front or Mystic Vulnerability), then Healbane and a 3,200 counter item such as Warp Stone, Dispel Magic, Metal Skin or Spirit Resilience. Then buy Torment Pulse and Compress Cooldown on Slice and Dice. With Slice and Dice at tier 3, those two items enable dash resets. Late, add Escalating Exposure, Mystic Reverb on the dash and defensive items like Spellbreaker or Plated Armor.

How does Shiv's rage work in Deadlock?

Rage is the passive half of Killing Blow, so it only exists once you unlock his ultimate. Damage to enemy heroes and their barriers fills a 10-point meter, and only a full bar gives bonuses: +8% damage (+24% with Killing Blow tier 2), stronger knives, an echo on Slice and Dice and more damage deferred by Bloodletting. Rage starts draining after 12 seconds without hero damage, so one bleed tick keeps it full. A Killing Blow execute refills it instantly.

Do Shiv's knives still ricochet at full rage?

No. The September 16, 2026 patch removed the ricochet. At full rage, Serrated Knives now deal 3.5% of the target's current health on impact and slow bleeding targets by 28%. Older guides, including Retr0's August 2026 video, still describe the ricochet and the trick of bouncing knives off troopers, camps and soul wards, which no longer works.

What is Shiv's Killing Blow execute threshold?

Killing Blow executes enemy heroes below 18% of their max health, or 28% with the tier 3 upgrade. Against anyone above the threshold it deals a flat 200 spirit damage and Shiv passes through them, so he can't be body-blocked. A kill lets you recast within 16 seconds (cut from 20 seconds in July 2026). The 145-second cooldown goes up by 30% if you hit no hero at all.

How do you counter Shiv in Deadlock?

Anti-heal such as Healbane weakens Bloodletting, because the wiki says its damage clear counts as healing. Slowing Hex disables Slice and Dice, Killing Blow and his alt-fire knockback. Cleanse items and debuff resist remove or shorten his knife bleed and dash shred, and spirit resist items like Spellbreaker blunt his damage. Above all, heal or back off before you drop to 18% health (28% against a tier 3 ult), where a red aura shows you can be executed.
