🎯 The core idea
Coordinating ultimate abilities is one of the biggest gaps between a ranked lobby throwing ults out separately and a team that chains them into a clean team wipe. This guide walks through five ultimate combo pairings pulled from a coaching breakdown — but the source video is from December 2024, close to two years old against the current game, and Marvel Rivals has restructured its team-up system since then. Every pairing below has been checked against the current Marvel Rivals Wiki, and one of the five no longer works at all.
Two of these five pairings are official in-game Team-Up abilities; the other three are just general combo tech (one hero's kit setting up another hero's ultimate) that doesn't depend on any team-up bonus existing. Both kinds are useful, but they carry different risk from patches — see each entry below.
- free costs nothing
- cheap small cost
- setup needs preparation
- grind pays off slowly
- skip the thing to stop doing
What's changed since this video was recorded
This is the actual Team-Ups screen from when the source video was recorded. Several of the pairings on it — Ragnarök Rebirth (Hela + Thor), Metallic Chaos (Scarlet Witch + Magneto), Gamma Charge (Doctor Strange/Iron Man + Hulk), and Ammo Overload (Rocket + Punisher/Winter Soldier) — are now explicitly marked unavailable in the current season by the wiki. Team-ups get rotated, reworked, and replaced as the roster grows, so a combo guide this old needs each pairing re-verified individually rather than trusted as a set. That's what the rest of this guide does.
Combo 1: Groot's Strangling Prison into a follow-up ultimate
This isn't an official Team-Up ability — it's general setup-into-payoff combo tech, so it doesn't depend on any team-up bonus and can't be patched away the way a formal team-up can. Groot's ultimate, Strangling Prison, is a crowd-control (CC) ability: it launches an orb that sprouts vines and pulls every nearby enemy to its center, dealing 70 damage on impact and 40 per second while they're trapped, for 3.5 seconds. The moment it lands, follow up with a high-burst ultimate — Namor or Moon Knight both work well — to capitalize on a cluster of enemies who can't reposition.
One detail worth knowing: Strangling Prison only restricts movement. Trapped enemies can still attack and use their own abilities, so this is a burst-damage setup, not a full lockdown — keep your own follow-up damage coming rather than assuming the trap alone wins the fight.
Combo 2: Loki transforming into a second ultimate
Loki's own ultimate, God of Mischief, lets him transform into a targeted ally for 12 seconds, copying their full non-team-up kit with their ultimate instantly charged. That makes Loki a wildcard who can effectively add a second copy of someone else's ultimate to a fight — still core to his kit today, unchanged from when this video was made.
Combo 3: Doctor Strange's portal repositioning a damage dealer
Doctor Strange's Pentagram of Farallah is base kit, not a team-up, so it isn't at risk of being patched away the way an official pairing is. It links two points on the map with a pair of portals for 20 seconds, on a 180-second cooldown that persists through respawns.
Combo 4: Rocket + Punisher — no longer available
This is the one combo on this list that doesn't work anymore. The wiki explicitly marks Rocket's "Ammo Overload" team-up with Punisher (and Winter Soldier) as unavailable in the current season — the device that used to grant infinite ammo and attack speed near it is gone. Rocket's ultimate itself has also changed since this video: it no longer grants the flat "double damage" the video describes, and instead grants a 25% damage boost plus a bonus health generation effect for nearby allies over its 12-second duration. Skip this one as described; it's kept here so you know why you might see it referenced elsewhere and shouldn't go looking for it in your current loadout.
How this guide was fact-checked
Every hero and team-up named in this guide was checked individually against its current Marvel Rivals Wiki page (marvelrivals.wiki.gg), since the source video is from December 2024 and the wiki confirms several team-ups have been added, reworked, or retired since then. Two corrections matter most: Rocket + Punisher's "Ammo Overload" team-up is explicitly flagged unavailable in the current season, and Rocket's ultimate no longer grants flat double damage. One correction runs the other direction — Scarlet Witch's ultimate was buffed from 750 to a guaranteed 9999 damage with a new pull effect in a later season, after this video was recorded, so that combo is stronger today than described. Groot's Strangling Prison, Loki's transformation ultimate, Hela's Goddess of Death, Winter Soldier's Kraken Impact chain mechanic, and Doctor Strange's Pentagram of Farallah portal all matched current wiki data with no changes needed. Also corrected throughout: the source video's auto-generated captions consistently mishear the hero Namor as "Neymar" (the footballer).
What this guide doesn't answer
This guide doesn't cover every possible ultimate combo in the game — it's built from the five pairings the source video demonstrates, not an exhaustive combo list, and the current roster has team-ups this video predates entirely (it was recorded before several recent hero releases). It also doesn't give exact patch-by-patch ultimate charge rates or ult-economy numbers, since those shift with balance passes more often than this guide is meant to track — see this catalogue's hero-specific guides for current ability numbers. And it doesn't cover solo-queue reliability: every combo here assumes voice or text coordination with at least one teammate willing to time a coordinated ultimate, which isn't guaranteed in an uncoordinated lobby.
Frequently asked
What are the best ultimate combos in Marvel Rivals?
Coordinated ultimate combos that chain crowd control into burst damage include Groot's Strangling Prison followed by a high-burst ultimate like Namor or Moon Knight, Loki transforming into Hela or Winter Soldier to add a second copy of their ultimate, and Doctor Strange portaling a Punisher or Scarlet Witch into position for their own ultimate. Not every combo from an older guide still works, since team-ups get reworked between seasons — always check whether a specific pairing is still live.
Does Groot's ultimate combo with other ultimates still work?
Yes. Groot's Strangling Prison ultimate immobilizes enemies in place for 3.5 seconds, dealing damage the whole time, and it isn't an official Team-Up ability, so it can't be removed by a team-up rework. Following it up with any high-burst ultimate, like Namor's or Moon Knight's, while enemies are trapped is a reliable team-wipe setup. Note that trapped enemies can still attack and use abilities — they just can't move away.
Can Loki use another hero's ultimate?
Yes. Loki's own ultimate, God of Mischief, lets him transform into a targeted ally for 12 seconds, copying their full kit with their ultimate instantly charged. That makes him effectively a second copy of whichever hero he transforms into — transforming into Hela or Winter Soldier for a second powerful ultimate is a common use of this.
Is the Rocket and Punisher ultimate combo still available?
No. The Marvel Rivals Wiki explicitly marks Rocket's Ammo Overload team-up with Punisher (and Winter Soldier) as unavailable in the current season. Rocket's ultimate has also changed since older guides were made — it now grants a 25% damage boost plus bonus health generation for allies, rather than the flat double damage it used to provide.
How does Doctor Strange's portal combo with Scarlet Witch's ultimate?
Doctor Strange's Pentagram of Farallah ability creates two linked portals anywhere on the map. Portaling Scarlet Witch into position lets her immediately use her ultimate, Reality Erasure, which now deals a guaranteed 9999 damage to everyone in a 15-meter radius and pulls nearby enemies toward her while charging — both the flat damage and the pull effect were added in a season after older guides to this combo were made, making it stronger today than originally described.
