π― The core idea
Lux wins from range. Land Light Binding or Lucent Singularity first, then cash in the mark with an auto attack or Final Spark, and you get far more damage than the spells alone. Her kit last changed on Summoner's Rift in patch 26.4, so Eternal Hero's January 2026 gameplay still holds up, with a few rune and quest updates for patch 26.21.
- free costs nothing
- cheap small cost
- setup needs preparation
- grind pays off slowly
- skip the thing to stop doing
This Lux guide is built on Eternal Hero's January 2026 video, a full mid lane game against Viktor in which Lux reaches 32/0/5 by 30 minutes. The video calls it Season 16; Riot calls the current year Season 2026. Every ability number, rune and item below was checked against the official League of Legends Wiki and the patch notes up to 26.21. Where the video is out of date or wrong, we say so in the text. The build and rune numbers for patch 26.21 come from an op.gg stats snapshot and are labelled as such.
Why Lux is worth learning in patch 26.21
free Lux is a long-range burst mage. She has a root that hits two targets, a slowing zone that clears waves, a shield for herself and allies, and an ultimate that reaches 3,400 units. The wiki lists her as a Burst and Artillery mage for Middle and Support, with damage 3, control 2 and mobility 1 out of 3. She hits hard from far away but has no dash, so positioning is the whole job. That's why she makes a good Lux beginner guide champion and appears as a mid lane backup pick in our best beginner champions guide.
Her 2026 changes on Summoner's Rift are short:
| Patch | Change |
|---|---|
| 25.24 hotfix | Passive ratio to 35% AP, Light Binding ratio to 75% AP (before the video) |
| 26.4 | Base mana 480 to 440, base mana regen 7 to 9; Light Binding cooldown a flat 10 s (was 11 / 10.5 / 10 / 9.5 / 9); Prismatic Barrier cooldown 12 / 11.5 / 11 / 10.5 / 10 s (was 14 / 13 / 12 / 11 / 10) |
| 26.5 to 26.21 | No Summoner's Rift changes to Lux |
The 26.4 change came after the video, which was recorded on patch 26.1. You can see the old 480 mana on his level 1 HUD. The patch 26.16 and 26.17 notes also list Lux buffs (340 move speed, a different Final Spark, an earlier shield), but those are for League Classic, the separate mode with older champion versions. They don't change normal or ranked Lux. On the op.gg snapshot for patch 26.21 (Emerald and above, all regions), Lux mid sits at a 51.0% win rate and tier 1, while Lux support sits at 49.0% and tier 3.
Lux abilities with current numbers
free These are the wiki's current values. If you want to know how to play Lux, learn three numbers first: Light Binding roots two targets for 2 seconds, Lucent Singularity slows by up to 45%, and Final Spark has a 3,400 range.
| Ability | What it does | Key numbers |
|---|---|---|
| Illumination (passive) | Abilities mark enemies for 6 s; an auto attack or Final Spark pops the mark | 30β200 (+35% AP) bonus magic damage |
| Q, Light Binding | Sphere roots and damages the first two enemies hit | 80 / 120 / 160 / 200 / 240 (+75% AP), 2 s root, 1300 range, 10 s cooldown |
| W, Prismatic Barrier | Wand goes out and comes back, shielding Lux and every ally it passes | 40β100 (+40% AP) per pass, up to 80β200 (+80% AP), 2.5 s, 12β10 s cooldown |
| E, Lucent Singularity | Zone that slows and gives vision for 5 s; recast to detonate | 65 / 115 / 165 / 215 / 265 (+80% AP), 25β45% slow, 1100 range, 310 radius, 10β8 s cooldown |
| R, Final Spark | 1 s cast, then a huge beam in a line; reveals enemies hit for 1.5 s | 300 / 400 / 500 (+120% AP), 3400 range, 60 / 50 / 40 s cooldown |
Three details from the wiki matter in real games. Light Binding is a projectile, so a minion in front takes the first hit, but it still roots one more enemy behind it. Prismatic Barrier is destroyed by Yasuo's Wind Wall. And Lucent Singularity's slow lingers for 1 second after an enemy leaves the zone, so it keeps working while you line up the next spell.
Lux passive: weave autos between spells
free The Lux passive is the part new players forget, and it's where Eternal Hero puts most of his attention. Every ability that hits marks the target. Your next basic attack on that target pops the mark for 30β200 (+35% AP) extra magic damage. At level 1 that is a big share of your burst, and the video points out that it also helps you last-hit.
The video's habits:
- Auto between spells. He lands Q on two targets, auto attacks one, casts E for a second mark, then auto attacks again. Two marks popped means two passive procs in one trade.
- Space out your spells. Later he says he held his abilities a moment longer so each one could be followed by an auto, and that way he triggered his passive twice.
- Let Final Spark pop it for you. Final Spark consumes the mark just like an auto attack. He uses this on Evelynn, who still had a mark from his Q, to get the passive damage without walking into range.
The wiki adds a useful detail: casting Final Spark refreshes marks that are about to expire on every enemy near the beam, so an old mark still counts when the beam lands.
Lux combos, from poke to the one shot
free Every Lux combo starts from the same idea: land the root or the slow first, because everything after it hits a target that can't dodge. These are the Lux combos worth learning:
| Combo | Keys | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Safe poke | E, recast E, auto if in range | Any time the enemy walks near the wave |
| Slow into root | E, Q, recast E, auto | The slow makes Q easier to land |
| Lux one shot | Q, E, recast E, auto, R, auto | After level 6 when Q lands |
| Max range execute | R alone | Enemy is low and outside your other spells |
| Flash root | Q, then Flash during the cast | Q fires from where you end up after Flash |
For the Lux one shot, the key is that Light Binding roots for 2 seconds and Final Spark only takes 1 second to cast. Eternal Hero says the best moment to ult is right after a Q hits, because the beam is then almost guaranteed to land. The flash root works because the wiki says Light Binding casts from wherever Lux stands when its 0.25 second cast time ends.
He also gives the opposite tip for when you're not sure. Try to reach the enemy with E and Q first instead of opening with Final Spark, and keep the ultimate as a last resort for when they escape your basic abilities. If an ally has crowd control, wait for it. He shows a beam on Volibear without any crowd control first, and it misses.
Lux poke and laning against Viktor
setup Eternal Hero takes E at level 1 (the HUD shows one rank in Lucent Singularity) and starts with Doran's Ring. His level 1 health is 680, which matches Lux's 580 base plus Doran's Ring and the health shard. He calls Lux a great pick into Viktor because of her range, and his lane shows why.
His Lux laning rules:
- Stand outside the wave. He keeps his distance so Viktor has to choose between farming and walking into a skillshot.
- Hit the wave and the champion with one E. When Viktor stands near his minions, E damages both. That's mana well spent, and it is how the video gets ahead in creep score.
- Use E for max-range poke. The video says E has the best range. The wiki's numbers are more precise: Q's range is 1,300 and E's cast range is 1,100, but E's 310 radius means its edge reaches about 1,400 units. So for Lux poke on a target standing behind minions, E does reach further.
- E first, then Q. The slow makes Q easier to land, and the zone's large hitbox is easier to hit than the narrow sphere.
- Hold the shield for real damage. Early on he skips W on purpose to save mana for poke.
cheap Mana is still Lux's limit in lane. Patch 26.4 lowered her base mana to 440 but raised her mana regen to 9, so you have a little less at the start of a fight and more over time. That's one reason the video calls Lost Chapter the ideal first back.
Wave control with Lucent Singularity
free Lucent Singularity is Lux's wave clear. One E with a passive pop on the cannon clears most of a caster wave by the mid game. Here he detonates it on a full wave under Viktor's turret at 9:56.
Eternal Hero's priorities are simple: push the lane first, then help elsewhere. He takes turret plates every time Viktor leaves lane, and he points out that a pushed wave forces Viktor to clear it instead of following him. One tip from the video is easy to copy: when you're being chased, hold the E zone on the ground longer before you detonate it, because the slow keeps working the whole time.
For freezing, slow pushing and crashing, see our wave management guide. For general mid lane trading and recall timing, see the mid lane guide.
Lux runes: Dark Harvest, Comet or Scorch
cheap The video's rune page is called "One-Shot Lux". It's Domination first, which most Lux players don't use:
| Slot | Video's rune | What it does (wiki) |
|---|---|---|
| Keystone | Dark Harvest | On a champion below 50% health, deal 30 (+11 per Soul) (+5% AP) bonus damage and collect a Soul; 35 s cooldown, reset to 1 s on a takedown |
| Domination | Cheap Shot | 10β49 bonus true damage to champions who are rooted or slowed, 4 s cooldown |
| Domination | Grisly Mementos | Trinket haste for every champion takedown |
| Domination | Ultimate Hunter | Lower ultimate cooldown, more with each unique takedown |
| Sorcery | Manaflow Band | +25 max mana per ability hit on a champion, up to 250 |
| Sorcery | Scorch | Burns a champion hit by an ability for 20β42 after 1 s, 10 s cooldown |
| Shards | 2 Γ adaptive force, scaling health |
Cheap Shot fits Lux well, since Q roots and E slows, and both count as impairing. Eternal Hero says Dark Harvest is especially good against melee champions, who walk into range for the auto attacks that collect souls. He names Arcane Comet as the other keystone. Note that in this game he took Gathering Storm instead of Scorch for more AP later, while still recommending Scorch if you poke a lot.
Lux runes for patch 26.21. Arcane Comet changed after the video. Patch 26.9 removed its cooldown refund and made it deal up to double damage based on the distance the comet travels, with the maximum at 750 units. For a long-range mage like Lux that's a buff, and it shows. On the op.gg snapshot for 26.21, about three in four Lux players in both roles take Arcane Comet with Manaflow Band, Transcendence and Scorch, plus Cheap Shot and Ultimate Hunter from Domination. Dark Harvest is still the video's choice for a snowball game. If you're new to Lux, start with Comet, which pays off on every poke.
Best Lux build for 26.21: Luden's into Stormsurge
grind The video's item graphic shows Luden's Echo, Sorcerer's Shoes, Stormsurge, Shadowflame, Rabadon's Deathcap and Void Staff. In the game he follows it: Luden's Echo first (he calls Lost Chapter the ideal first component), boots before the mid quest, then Stormsurge at 13:05 (this shop frame), Shadowflame, Rabadon's and Void Staff as the sixth item. Prices and stats are from the wiki, and none of these items changed on Summoner's Rift in patches 26.2 to 26.21.
| Order | Item | Cost | Why Lux wants it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Luden's Echo | 2750 | 100 AP, 10 ability haste, 600 mana; your next ability hit deals 75 (+5% AP) bonus damage and splashes to nearby enemies |
| 2 | Sorcerer's Shoes | 1100 | 12 magic penetration; becomes Spellslinger's Shoes when the mid quest completes |
| 3 | Stormsurge | 2800 | 90 AP, 15 magic penetration, 6% move speed; dealing 25% of a champion's max health within 2.5 s strikes them for 125 (+10% AP) 2 s later |
| 4 | Shadowflame | 3200 | 110 AP, 15 magic penetration; magic damage crits for 120% on targets below 40% health |
| 5 | Rabadon's Deathcap | 3500 | 130 AP and +30% total AP |
| 6 | Void Staff | 3000 | 95 AP, 40% magic penetration |
The best Lux build in LoL right now is almost the same. The most common three-item path on op.gg for 26.21 is exactly Luden's Echo, Stormsurge and Shadowflame, with Rabadon's as the usual fourth item. Malignance into Stormsurge is the second most common path. Zhonya's Hourglass (3250) is the standard swap for Rabadon's or Void Staff when an assassin is fed.
Stormsurge is the item the video praises most. A Lux combo easily deals 25% of a target's health, so the lightning hit follows almost every trade. He also says it works well with Dark Harvest, since the strike often lands just as the target drops below 50% health.
Final Spark: Lux ult tips that win fights
setup Final Spark is the reason people pick Lux. Here are the Lux ult tips from the video, checked against the wiki:
- It can't be interrupted. The video says the cast can't be stopped once it starts. The wiki confirms that only death interrupts it. If you see Viktor's stun or Evelynn's charm coming, start the ultimate just before it lands. The beam still fires.
- Cast it right after Q lands. A 2 second root against a 1 second cast is the safest Lux one shot.
- Use it for vision. The beam reveals enemies hit for 1.5 seconds and gives sight around it. Eternal Hero swaps to the blue trinket (Farsight Alteration) for the same reason: vision makes long range snipes easier.
- Aim where they're going. Late in the game he advises predicting enemy movement with your ultimate rather than firing at where they stand.
- Low cooldown means use it. At rank 3 the cooldown is 40 seconds, and Ultimate Hunter lowers it further. He fires it often to keep pressure on the enemy.
Two limits to know: Lux can't move during the 1 second cast, and Flash during the cast doesn't move the beam on Summoner's Rift.
Mid quest and snowballing a lead
free Before the mid quest completes he buys boots so the quest can upgrade them, and the scoreboard at 10:21 shows Lux at 5/0/0 with 93 creep score. The mid role quest needs 1,350 points. When it completes, Sorcerer's Shoes upgrade for free into Spellslinger's Shoes (8% plus 20 flat magic penetration, with the flat pen raised from 18 in patch 26.16), and you get 8% bonus AD and AP for the rest of the game. Since patch 26.9 the mid quest no longer gives an empowered recall. Our mid lane guide explains how the points fill up.
His snowball habits after the quest:
- Stay mid while you're ahead. After a few kills he says he has to stay in mid more, push and take plates, because that's where his lead turns into gold.
- Take turrets when the jungler shows elsewhere. He pushes harder when Evelynn is seen in bot lane, and plays safer when he expects her to come mid.
- Let teammates farm. Late in the game he leaves a wave so Jinx can farm and come back into the game.
skip Chasing kills into the fog without vision. Lux has no escape, and a dead Lux with Dark Harvest stacks gives up a large shutdown.
Lux support guide: shield, root and vision
setup The video only plays mid, so this Lux support guide section is ours, built from the wiki, the op.gg snapshot and our support guide. Support Lux plays the same spells with a different job: you root for your ADC, shield them, and use your long range to poke without taking farm.
- Support item. You start with World Atlas, the support item the game buys for you. On op.gg, 88% of Lux supports upgrade it into Zaz'Zak's Realmspike, which adds 200 health and a Void explosion when your ability damage hits a champion.
- Runes and spells. Most support Lux players use the same Comet, Manaflow, Transcendence and Scorch page as mid. Flash with Heal or Ignite are the usual spells.
- Items. The common path is still Luden's Echo, Stormsurge and Shadowflame. Lux support is a damage support, not an enchanter.
- Shield. Prismatic Barrier shields every ally the wand passes going out and coming back, and it can stack twice. Throw it in a line through as many allies as you can, as the video advises.
- Vision. E gives vision for 5 seconds wherever you throw it. That's a free way to check brush before your ADC walks in.
Expect a harder lane than mid. Her worst support matchups on op.gg are engage champions such as Blitzcrank, Rell and Galio, who can reach her after a single missed Q.
Lux matchups and counters
setup The video covers one lane matchup, Viktor, and Lux wins it by out-ranging him. For other Lux matchups, the kind of champion matters more than the name:
| Enemy type | How it goes | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Melee champions (Irelia, Sylas, Yasuo) | Lux can poke them freely before 6, but they kill her if they reach her | Stay behind your wave, save Q for their engage; the video suggests Dark Harvest here |
| Long-range mages (Vel'Koz, Ziggs, Hwei, Xerath) | They match or beat her range | Farm with E, poke only when their key spell is down |
| Assassins (Talon, Zed, Fizz) | Dangerous after 6 | Keep Q for self-defense, buy Zhonya's earlier |
| Tanky engage supports (Blitzcrank, Rell, Galio) | Hard in bot lane | Stand behind minions, keep Flash for the hook or engage |
Op.gg's list of Lux counters in LoL for 26.21 roughly agrees: mid Lux struggles most against Gwen, Vel'Koz, Ziggs, Hwei and Talon, and does best against Irelia, Kayle, Sylas, Jayce and Azir. These are small samples that change every patch, so take them as a guide and not a rule. Yasuo is a special case: his Wind Wall blocks Light Binding and Lucent Singularity, and destroys Prismatic Barrier.
Late game Lux teamfights
setup By 30 minutes Lux is 32/0/5 in a fight at the Baron pit. In teamfights Lux is a backline mage: stay far back, use E to zone the entry, throw Q at whoever walks in first, and fire Final Spark through as many enemies as you can.
The video's late-game Lux tips:
- You're the target. He notes that when you're far ahead, the enemy team will try to catch you, so he tracks Blitzcrank's hook and Volibear's engage before he walks forward.
- Play off your team's crowd control. He calls his Amumu a great partner, because Amumu's crowd control locks enemies in place for Lux's skillshots.
- Don't over-chase. He stops himself from entering a pushed lane or dark jungle without vision, even when he's ahead.
- Set up Baron with a pick. He wants to kill the enemy jungler before starting Baron, and later sets a trap with his team in the jungle.
How this guide was fact-checked
- Video: Eternal Hero, "SEASON 16 LUX HOW TO PLAY & CARRY S+ | Best Build & Runes S16", uploaded in January 2026 during patch 26.1. The One-Shot Lux rune page, item order, level 1 E, Doran's Ring start (read from the level 1 health), item timings, the Viktor lane and the combo and ultimate tips come from the video's screens and commentary.
- Official League of Legends Wiki: every ability number (Lux page, last changed in patch 26.04), the Final Spark interrupt rule, Prismatic Barrier stacking and Wind Wall interaction, rune text for Dark Harvest, Cheap Shot, Grisly Mementos, Ultimate Hunter, Manaflow Band, Scorch, Gathering Storm and Arcane Comet, and item stats and prices for Luden's Echo, Sorcerer's Shoes, Stormsurge, Shadowflame, Rabadon's Deathcap, Void Staff, Zhonya's Hourglass, Lost Chapter, Doran's Ring, Malignance and Zaz'Zak's Realmspike.
- Patch notes 26.1 to 26.21: Lux's Summoner's Rift change in 26.4; the 26.16 and 26.17 Lux changes are League Classic only; Arcane Comet rework and Deathfire Touch in 26.9; mid quest changes in 26.9; Spellslinger's Shoes flat penetration from 18 to 20 in 26.16. No Summoner's Rift changes to the video's items in 26.2 to 26.21.
- Stats snapshot: op.gg, patch 26.21 (op.gg labels it 16.21), Emerald and above, all regions, taken on October 23, 2026. Win rates, the most common runes, items, spells, skill order and counters for mid and support come from there.
- Corrections to the video: Lux's base mana is now 440 with 9 mana regen, not the 480 on the video's HUD. Light Binding's cooldown is now a flat 10 seconds and Prismatic Barrier's is lower. "E has the best range" is true for reach, but Q has the longer listed range (1,300 vs 1,100). Arcane Comet is not the same rune the video describes. The video says Season 16; Riot's name is Season 2026.
- Ours, not the video's: the combo table, the support section and the matchup table by champion type.
What this guide doesn't answer
- ARAM Mayhem and Arena Lux: those modes use augments and their own Lux numbers.
- League Classic Lux: that mode uses an older kit with its own 26.16 and 26.17 changes.
- Matchup-by-matchup win rates: they move every patch, and the video shows only one lane opponent.
- Skins: cosmetic choices are out of scope for a gameplay guide.
- Other mid mages: for a mobile burst mage with a different playstyle, see our Ahri guide.
Frequently asked
What is the best Lux build in 2026?
For patch 26.21 the most common Lux build is Luden's Echo, Sorcerer's Shoes, Stormsurge and Shadowflame, then Rabadon's Deathcap and Void Staff. That matches Eternal Hero's video order. Swap in Zhonya's Hourglass when an assassin is fed. Support Lux uses the same items after upgrading World Atlas, usually into Zaz'Zak's Realmspike.
What runes should I take on Lux?
Most Lux players on patch 26.21 take Arcane Comet, Manaflow Band, Transcendence and Scorch, with Cheap Shot and Ultimate Hunter from Domination. Comet got stronger for Lux in patch 26.9, dealing up to double damage from long range. Eternal Hero's video uses Dark Harvest with Cheap Shot, Grisly Mementos, Ultimate Hunter, Manaflow Band and Scorch for a snowball game.
How does Lux's passive work?
Illumination marks enemies hit by Lux's abilities for 6 seconds. Her next basic attack or Final Spark on that target pops the mark for 30 to 200 (+35% AP) bonus magic damage. Weave an auto attack between spells, for example Q, auto, E, auto, to trigger it twice in one trade.
What is Lux's one shot combo?
Land Light Binding (Q), which roots for 2 seconds, then throw and detonate Lucent Singularity (E), auto attack to pop the passive, fire Final Spark (R) and auto again if you can. Final Spark's cast takes 1 second, so it lands while the target is still rooted, and it also pops the passive mark.
Can Lux's ultimate be interrupted?
No. Once Final Spark starts its 1 second cast, only Lux's death stops it, according to the League of Legends Wiki. If you see a stun or charm coming, start the ultimate just before it hits and the beam still fires. Lux can't move during the cast, and Flashing doesn't move the beam.
