🎯 The core idea
Kai'Sa has no fixed build. She picks a direction by her third item, AD crit, AD on-hit, AP or hybrid, and each direction evolves a different ability first. Kraken Slayer or Statikk Shiv, then Guinsoo's Rageblade, is the core on patch 26.21. After that, look at your own team's damage and the enemy's tankiness and choose from there. Learn the 100-point evolve thresholds and you can plan your power spikes before the game starts.
- free costs nothing
- cheap small cost
- setup needs preparation
- grind pays off slowly
- skip the thing to stop doing
This Kai'Sa guide follows the itemization flowcharts from collionLoL's March 2026 video ("How to itemize Kai'Sa like an OTP"). He was the top Kai'Sa one-trick on a public leaderboard when he recorded it. We checked every number against the official League of Legends Wiki and the patch notes up to 26.21. The build choices come from the video. The ability numbers, evolution thresholds and patch changes come from the wiki and Riot. The rune and matchup data is a labelled op.gg/LoLalytics snapshot.
Kai'Sa's kit in 2026: abilities and what changed
Kai'Sa is a 525-range marksman with a dash ultimate. Her damage comes from Plasma, a stacking mark on enemies. Basic attacks add 1 stack and Void Seeker (W) adds 2, or 3 when evolved. When an ally roots, stuns or otherwise immobilizes an enemy champion near her, that also adds a stack. The fifth stack detonates for 15% (+6% per 100 AP) of the target's missing health as magic damage. That is why a hard-CC support like Leona or Nautilus makes her so much stronger (see our support guide for how those supports play the lane).
| Ability | What it does (patch 26.21, per wiki) |
|---|---|
| Passive: Second Skin | Each Plasma stack applied deals 4–30 (+12% AP) magic damage, plus 1–8 (+3% AP) per stack already on the target. The 5th stack detonates for 15% (+6% per 100 AP) missing health (capped at 400 vs monsters) |
| Q: Icathian Rain | 6 missiles split among nearby enemies, 40–100 (+55% bonus AD) (+20% AP) each. After the first missile, extra missiles on the same non-minion deal 25%. Minions under 35% health take double. Cooldown 10–6s |
| W: Void Seeker | 3,000-range bolt, 30–130 (+130% AD) (+45% AP) magic damage, applies 2 Plasma and reveals the target for 4s. Cooldown 20/18.5/17/15.5/14s |
| E: Supercharge | Charge 1.2–0.6s (shorter with bonus attack speed) while ghosted and fast, then 40–80% bonus attack speed for 4s. Each attack cuts its cooldown by 0.5s |
| R: Killer Instinct | Dash near an enemy champion you hit with Plasma in the last 4s. Range 2,000/2,500/3,000. Shield 100/150/200 (+90/135/180% AD) (+120% AP). Resets your attack timer. Cooldown 130/100/70s |
Changed since the video (patch 26.5 to 26.21):
- 26.9: Killer Instinct now correctly counts as an attack reset for Hail of Blades.
- 26.13: W cooldown cut from 22–14s to 20–14s, and R base shield raised from 70/90/110 to 100/150/200.
- 26.15: Passive damage raised to 4–30 base and 1–8 per stack (it was 4–24 and 1–6). Riot said she was weaker than expected late game.
- 26.16: Base magic resist changed to 33 (+1.1 per level), part of a change to every marksman.
None of these changes the build logic, but together they make W poke and R dives more forgiving than they were in March.
Kai'Sa evolutions: thresholds and evolve order
Each basic ability evolves once you reach 100 of its stat. You choose when to evolve. It takes a 2-second cast, so do it after a fight or in base, not in the middle of a skirmish. The wiki says only stats from items and level growth count. Adaptive force from items does not count toward evolutions.
| Evolution | Requirement | What it adds |
|---|---|---|
| Q evolve | 100 bonus AD from items + level growth (100 at level 1, 56 from items at level 18) | 12 missiles instead of 6 |
| W evolve | 100 AP from items only | 3 Plasma instead of 2, and 75% of the cooldown refunded when it hits a champion |
| E evolve | 100% bonus attack speed from items + level growth (70% from items at level 18) | 0.5s of invisibility when you start the cast |
Kai'Sa evolve order by build. The table below is our arithmetic from the wiki's item stats. Kai'Sa gains 2.6 AD and 1.8% attack speed per level.
| Build | First evolve | When the others come |
|---|---|---|
| Kraken/Statikk → Rageblade → Terminus (on-hit) | Q at 3 items (45 + 30 + 30 = 105 AD) | E as soon as you have Berserker's Greaves and two attack-speed items. W only with Zhonya's (105 AP) |
| Kraken → Rageblade → Nashor's (AP) | W at 3 items (30 + 80 = 110 AP) | E at 3 items (40 + 25 + 50 = 115%). Q at about level 12 (75 AD from Kraken + Rageblade) |
| Statikk → Rageblade → Dusk and Dawn | W at 3 items (45 + 30 + 60 = 135 AP) | E soon after with Berserker's Greaves |
| Kraken → Rageblade → Dusk and Dawn | W is not done: 30 + 60 = 90 AP | Needs another AP item (the video names Shadowflame) |
| Crit (Kraken → Rageblade → PD or Fiendhunter Bolts) | E first, W never | Q at 4 items, or at about level 12 with only Kraken + Rageblade (75 AD from items + about 25 from levels) |
setup The kaisa q evolve checkpoint from the video: finish your first item, then buy Rageblade's Pickaxe first. The video says that with your first item and a Caulfield's Warhammer as well, the Q evolve comes at level 8. The math checks out: 45 + 25 + 20 = 90 AD from items, plus about 15 AD from levels, is past 100. Caulfield's is not part of Rageblade's recipe, though, so it is a detour. Without it, the first item plus Pickaxe (70 AD) reaches the threshold around level 14.
Kai'Sa runes, starter and first item: Kraken Slayer or Statikk Shiv
The video's first-item question: is every enemy squishy? If any enemy can build tanky, buy Kraken Slayer, his "universal choice". Every few attacks it deals bonus physical damage that grows against low-health targets. If all five are squishy, build whatever you like, because they can't stack resistances. If you have no preference, buy Statikk Shiv when you want waveclear and Kraken when you don't.
The video adds that Statikk is "better with AP builds" because it is cheaper, which leaves more gold for AP. That reason no longer applies. Patch 26.9 reworked Statikk Shiv: it now costs 3,000 (the same as Kraken) and gives 45 AD, 45 AP and 30% attack speed. Its chain lightning also spreads on-hit effects to extra targets. The conclusion still holds for a better reason: Statikk's 45 AP counts toward the W evolve. Riot's 26.11 notes name Kai'Sa when raising Statikk to 45 AD.
Runes, spells and skill order (op.gg Emerald+ snapshot, patch 26.21, labelled "16.21" on the site; not from the video):
| Choice | Most picked on 26.21 |
|---|---|
| Primary (Precision) | Lethal Tempo, Presence of Mind, Legend: Bloodline, Coup de Grace (Cut Down second) |
| Secondary (Inspiration) | Magical Footwear and Biscuit Delivery (Cash Back is close) |
| Shards | Attack speed, adaptive force, health scaling |
| Summoners | Flash + Barrier (about 73%), Flash + Exhaust (about 18%) |
| Starter | Doran's Bow (about 88%): 8 AD, 15% attack speed, 1.5% omnivamp for 400 gold, added in 26.9 |
| Boots | Berserker's Greaves (30% attack speed since 26.16) |
| Skill order | Q first, then E, max Q > E > W |
Runes and shards don't help you evolve on Summoner's Rift. The tooltip counts only items and level growth, and the wiki lists shards counting as an Arena-only difference.
Second item Guinsoo's Rageblade and the Zhonya's check
free The second item is always Guinsoo's Rageblade in the video: 30 AD, 30 AP and 25% attack speed. Once fully stacked, its Phantom Hits re-apply your on-hit effects, and Plasma comes from on-hit attacks. Since 26.18 its attack-speed stacks last 4 seconds instead of 3, so it is easier to keep stacked in on-and-off fights. Build its Pickaxe first for the Q evolve checkpoint above.
Before the third item, the video asks one survival question. Is there a fed assassin, such as Rengar or Shaco, that you can't play against without Zhonya's? If so, buy Zhonya's Hourglass third: 105 AP, 50 armor and a 2.5-second stasis. Its 105 AP alone also completes the W evolve. If you're safe, buy an offensive item and choose it by the damage type your team is missing.
AD third item: Terminus on-hit or crit with PD or Fiendhunter Bolts
If your team is mostly AP, go AD. The video then splits AD into two branches:
- On-hit (Terminus): choose this if a teammate is likely to build crit (Yasuo, Yone or Gangplank in the video). Two crit carries make Randuin's Omen far more valuable for the enemy. It is also the pick against HP stackers like Mundo, Sion or Cho'Gath, followed by Blade of the Ruined King fourth. Terminus gives 30 AD and 35% attack speed, and its on-hit alternates bonus resistances with up to 30% armor and magic penetration. Since 26.15 that on-hit damage also scales with 10% bonus AD and 10% AP.
- Crit (default AD build in the video): choose Phantom Dancer if movement speed matters more to you, or Fiendhunter Bolts if your ultimate does. Fiendhunter gives 30 ultimate haste and empowers 3 attacks after you use R. The video's player prefers Fiendhunter. PD (65% attack speed, 10% move speed, permanent ghosting) is better in long fights against bruisers and tanks.
skip Don't plan Terminus with Lord Dominik's Regards or Mortal Reminder in the same build. The wiki lists all three as "Fatality" items, and you can only own one.
AP third item: Nashor's Tooth or Dusk and Dawn
The kaisa ap build is for games where your team is mostly AD. The video asks one question here: are the enemies tanky or squishy?
- Nashor's Tooth against tanks and bruisers: 80 AP, 15 ability haste, 50% attack speed and 15 (+15% AP) magic damage on-hit. The video's player found he missed its damage in long fights.
- Dusk and Dawn against squishies: 60 AP, 20 ability haste, 20% attack speed and 300 health. After you cast an ability, your next attack deals bonus magic damage and applies on-hit effects again (1.5s cooldown). The video calls it "the much stronger item at the moment".
What changed: patch 26.9 cut Dusk and Dawn to 60 AP (from 70) and 20% attack speed (from 25%), and gave it a small heal. On the 26.21 op.gg snapshot, Kraken → Rageblade → Nashor's (about 24% of games) and Statikk → Rageblade → Nashor's (about 9%) are the common AP cores. Dusk and Dawn is not in the top five core builds there. Treat Nashor's as the safer default today, and Dusk and Dawn as the pick against squishy teams.
Hybrid third item: Terminus or Hextech Gunblade
When your team needs mixed damage, the video goes hybrid. Buy Terminus against tanky teams and Hextech Gunblade against squishy ones. Gunblade is 40 AD, 80 AP and 10% omnivamp, with a 175–253 (+30% AP) damage and slow active on a 60s cooldown. It came back to Summoner's Rift in 26.1. The video's player says Gunblade third against squishies is something he hadn't tested yet, so treat that branch as his suggestion, not a proven line. He also says he rarely builds hybrid any more.
Kai'Sa crit build: final items
The crit build in the video, after the core:
- 4th: Lord Dominik's Regards. Without it the video's player found crit Kai'Sa's damage "falls off very hard". It gives 35 AD, 35% armor penetration and up to 15% bonus damage against high-HP targets. Swap it for Mortal Reminder only if you need anti-heal and no teammate is building it, or for QSS/Zhonya's when you can't survive otherwise.
- 5th: Infinity Edge: 75 AD, 25% crit and 30% crit damage.
- 6th: a defensive slot. Zhonya's, Mercurial Scimitar or Randuin's when you need them, otherwise Guardian Angel, Bloodthirster or Immortal Shieldbow. The video credits coaching stats from coachless.gg for calling Shieldbow and GA underrated on Kai'Sa.
The defensive sixth slot exists because of the 2026 ADC role quest. When it completes, your boots move to a separate Role Quest slot, so you keep six item slots plus boots, as explained in our role quests guide. The same quest pays 40 bonus gold per takedown (patch 26.9 cut it from 50), plus 300 gold on completion.
Kai'Sa on-hit build: final items
The kaisa on hit build doesn't need Wit's End. The video puts the choices for slot four and later like this:
- Blade of the Ruined King, "often the best 4th item". It deals 9% of current health on-hit (6% for ranged) and slows on the third hit.
- Dusk and Dawn "goes very well with all other items". After four attack-speed items, more attack speed has diminishing returns. Dusk and Dawn instead re-applies every on-hit you own (Kraken, Rageblade, Terminus, BotRK, Plasma) and adds 300 health, which pairs with Terminus' resistances.
- Wit's End only if you need tenacity and can't fit Mercurial Scimitar.
- Zhonya's Hourglass: besides the stasis, its 105 AP gives you the W evolve and scales your passive, which this build triggers constantly.
- Finish with any defensive item. The video prefers Jak'Sho, The Protean over GA, because Terminus already gives you resistances that Jak'Sho multiplies.
Kai'Sa AP build: final items
After a Nashor's or Dusk and Dawn third, the video's AP options are:
- The other one of the two fourth. He says it "will never be wrong" and that win rates back it, even though it feels wrong to him.
- Shadowflame, his favourite fourth: 110 AP, 15 magic penetration, and magic or true damage crits for 120% against targets under 40% health. That fits Plasma's magic damage. It has less value if your team already has executes.
- Rabadon's Deathcap only together with Shadowflame, when you don't need a defensive item.
- Banshee's Veil is, in his view, one of the best fifth items against AP threats (105 AP, 40 MR, spell shield).
- Hextech Gunblade into bruisers and tanks, for the omnivamp.
skip Zhonya's fourth by default. The video calls this "a huge mistake" because you lose a lot of damage, but it is right against specific threats. Void Staff and Cryptbloom are left out on purpose. If an ADC needs Void Staff, the AP build was usually the wrong choice. His rule of thumb: when ahead, build defensive and play aggressive; when behind, build offensive and play safe.
Kai'Sa hybrid build: final items
The hybrid build revolves around Terminus: its armor and magic penetration, plus the resistances it stacks, make both damage types and your passive hit harder. From there the video lists Shadowflame (its flat magic penetration pairs with Terminus), Zhonya's, Hextech Gunblade ("the true hybrid item"), Dusk and Dawn and Banshee's Veil. It also lists Jak'Sho, The Protean, but jokingly calls it "a worse Kog'Maw" cosplay, and the player avoids it because he doesn't deal enough damage with it.
skip One wiki rule to remember: Terminus is also a Blight item, like Void Staff, so you can't own both. That's one more reason the video never builds Void Staff here.
Kai'Sa combos, laning and ult tips
Kai'Sa combos and tips that follow from the kit:
- free Isolation matters for Q. Missiles spread across all nearby enemies, so firing Q into a minion wave wastes most of them. Use Icathian Rain when the enemy is alone, or after the minions around them are dead, and it hits several times harder. Near low-health minions it also clears waves, since they take double damage. Our wave management guide covers when to push and when to hold the wave.
- Basic trade: attack, then Q, then attack. Each attack and missile adds Plasma, so short trades build toward the 5-stack missing-health pop.
- W is your laning poke and your ult setup. A W hit applies 2 Plasma and makes the target valid for R for 4 seconds, at up to 3,000 range. That's how Kai'Sa follows an engage across the map.
- Ult tips: Killer Instinct needs a Plasma-marked champion within range, and any ally CC on a champion applies Plasma too. When your support lands a hook or stun, you can dash in. The shield scales with AD and AP, and since 26.13 its base is 100/150/200. The ult resets your attack timer, so attack right after the dash. You can also cast Q or E during the dash.
- E to reposition: Supercharge makes you ghosted and fast while it charges. Evolved, it also gives 0.5s of invisibility at the start of the cast.
skip Kai'Sa laning mistake to stop making: evolving abilities in the middle of lane. The 2-second cast leaves you standing still. The wiki lists a way to skip it (start Recall or Supercharge right as the evolve begins), but it is marked as a bug, so don't count on it staying.
Kai'Sa matchups and counters (26.21 snapshot)
The video doesn't cover matchups, so this section uses stats sites (patch 26.21, Emerald+, checked 2026-10-23). Treat it as a snapshot. Several matchups have only a few hundred games, and the numbers move every patch.
| op.gg (Emerald+) | LoLalytics (Emerald+) | |
|---|---|---|
| Overall | 50.0% win rate, 20.3% pick rate | 51.35% win rate, S- tier, 4th of 53 bot laners |
| Hardest lanes | Karthus, Nilah, Swain, Aurelion Sol, Yasuo | Nilah, Kog'Maw, Swain |
| Easiest lanes | Mel, Corki, Ziggs, Ezreal, Viktor | Corki, Ezreal, Jhin |
Our reading of the pattern (not from the video): Kai'Sa wants a short fight she can start with W into R, or end with the Plasma pop. Kai'Sa counters lol players tend to pick are champions that win extended all-ins at her range (Nilah) or punish her for stepping up (bot-lane mages like Swain and Karthus). Long-range poke marksmen like Ezreal, Corki and Jhin tend to lose to her once she has the items to dash onto them. In teamfights, wait for the enemy's key crowd control to be used, then use R to dive onto a marked backliner. The shield usually covers the first burst.
How this guide was fact-checked
- Source video: collionLoL, "How to itemize Kai'Sa like an OTP | S16 Kai'Sa Build Guide", uploaded 2026-03-06 (patch 26.5 era). The item decision trees, final-item lists and the "when ahead / when behind" rule are his. They are credited in the text and read from the on-screen slides. The captions mangled many item names ("Kha'Zix" for Kai'Sa, "Duskblade" for Dusk and Dawn), so we used the slide text.
- Official League of Legends Wiki (Kai'Sa page and patch history, plus item pages): ability numbers, evolution thresholds, item stats, Fatality/Blight limits. All values are the patch 26.21 versions.
- Official patch notes 26.5–26.21: Kai'Sa changes in 26.9, 26.13, 26.15 and 26.16; Statikk Shiv rework (26.9) and AD buff (26.11); Dusk and Dawn nerf (26.9); Doran's Bow (26.9/26.10); Terminus (26.15); Berserker's Greaves (26.16); Rageblade (26.18).
- Corrections to the video: Statikk Shiv is no longer cheaper than Kraken Slayer (both 3,000 since 26.9), but it now gives 45 AP. Dusk and Dawn was nerfed after the video. The video says "Season 16", while Riot calls the current season Season 2026. Evolve timings in the tables are our arithmetic from wiki stats, not the video's.
- Stats-site data: runes, spells, skill order, starter, core build share and matchups are an op.gg and LoLalytics snapshot for patch 26.21 (sites label it 16.21). They are not from the video.
What this guide doesn't answer
- Exact matchup-by-matchup lane plans: the video has none, and a few hundred games per matchup is too few to write firm advice.
- Arena and ARAM: Mayhem builds: Kai'Sa's numbers differ in those modes (for example, stat shards count toward evolutions in Arena).
- A tier list or "best ADC" ranking: win rates shift every patch; we only quote the 26.21 snapshot.
- Duo lane strategy in depth: see the support guide and role quests guide for how bot lane plays around quests and support items.
- The video's example games: the creator links separate gameplay videos for those, and we didn't analyse them.
Frequently asked
What are Kai'Sa's evolution thresholds?
Q (Icathian Rain) evolves at 100 bonus attack damage from items and level growth and fires 12 missiles instead of 6. W (Void Seeker) evolves at 100 ability power from items only, applying 3 Plasma and refunding 75% of its cooldown on a champion hit. E (Supercharge) evolves at 100% bonus attack speed from items and level growth and adds 0.5 seconds of invisibility. Evolving is a 2-second cast.
What is the best Kai'Sa build in 2026?
There is no single best build. On patch 26.21 the core is Kraken Slayer (or Statikk Shiv for waveclear) into Guinsoo's Rageblade. The third item picks the direction: Terminus for on-hit, Phantom Dancer or Fiendhunter Bolts for crit, Nashor's Tooth or Dusk and Dawn for AP, and Terminus or Hextech Gunblade for hybrid. Choose based on your team's missing damage type and how tanky the enemy is.
What is Kai'Sa's evolve order?
It depends on the build. An on-hit build with Terminus usually evolves Q first at three items (45 + 30 + 30 AD). AP builds with Nashor's Tooth evolve W at three items. Crit builds evolve E first and Q around the fourth item. Kraken Slayer, Rageblade and Dusk and Dawn only reach 90 AP, so that path needs one more AP item for W.
What runes does Kai'Sa take?
The op.gg Emerald+ snapshot for patch 26.21 has Lethal Tempo, Presence of Mind, Legend: Bloodline and Coup de Grace (Cut Down second), with Inspiration secondary (Magical Footwear and Biscuit Delivery). Shards are attack speed, adaptive force and health scaling. Flash with Barrier is the most common summoner pair, and Doran's Bow is the usual starter.
Is AP Kai'Sa still good?
Yes, when your team is mostly AD. Nashor's Tooth is the safe AP third item against tanks and bruisers, and Dusk and Dawn suits squishy teams, though patch 26.9 trimmed it to 60 AP. Statikk Shiv now gives 45 AP since its 26.9 rework, which speeds up the W evolve. Shadowflame is a strong fourth item, while Void Staff is rarely worth building on an ADC.
