HOI4 Achievements

Hearts of Iron IV hides some of its best campaigns behind achievements: play Sinkiang, nuke Denmark as Sweden, hold France to 1948 without capitulating. This page lists every one of them, grouped by the expansion that added it, with what each asks for and the starting point that makes it manageable.

How achievements work

Achievements have no effect inside the game — the pop-up appears and the entry lands on your Steam or Xbox profile, and nothing in the campaign changes. What matters is the conditions around them.

Three rules that decide everything

Ironman has to be on, because Steam achievements only unlock with ironman enabled. Console commands are disabled in ironman by design, so there is no cheating one open. And any mod that changes gameplay switches ironman off, which takes the achievements with it.

The list below is per expansion. If an achievement belongs to a DLC you do not own, it will not appear in your game at all — the base-game set is the only one everybody has.

Six worth starting with

None of these need a war plan or a perfect opening. They are the ones to clear while you learn where the buttons are.

The Where to start column is the practical half: which country makes it easy, and the opening that gets you there. Where the wiki's editors gave no route, the requirement is the whole story.

Germany is an ideal choice if one goes Democratic, given that on top of a bonus to nuclear weapons, it can get an ahead of time bonus on nukes.
Wunderwaffen	Has completed the Special Projects Nuclear Fission Bomb, Rocket Interceptor and Jet Engines.	Follow the strategy for Poland Can Into Space achievement and simply research additional technologies.
United Netherlands	Conquer Belgium and Luxembourg as Netherlands.	As Netherlands. 2\|\|5px}} }}
Vive la France	Reach 1948 as France without capitulating or surrendering.	As France. Flip to fascism through an advisor or national foci, and join the Axis. Do not join any wars.
Master of War	Fully research a land, air and naval doctrine tree.	—
Mine is bigger than yours	Lead a faction with at least 20 members.	Just play as the United Kingdom and go down the Revisit Colonial Policy branch to release all occupied land as puppets.
No country for old men	Reach 0 manpower with Scraping the Barrel as Conscription Law.	On historical mode, start as Luxembourg and do absolutely nothing. Save up 750+ political power.
Poland Can Into Space	Has completed the Special Project Rocket Interceptor.	As Poland. Concede territory to avoid wars and just research. Even when you get overrun and conquered by Germany and/or the Soviet Union, you will continue the game as a government-in-exile hosted by the United Kingdom and remain eligible for the achievement.
True Blitzkrieg	As Germany have both Poland and France surrender before January 1st 1940.	As Germany. Both nations need to be either capitulated or annexed. Neither of them can be a puppet.
Northern Light	As a Scandinavian country form your own faction, and have Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland in it.	As Denmark. * 22px Is a faction leader * 22px In faction with: Norway Denmark Sweden Finland
Nobody expects...	As Nationalist Spain in Axis manage to take Paris before the Germans.	As Spain. Go down the Unify the Nationalist Front path, win the civil war, and head for Join the Axis. Join the war once Germany attacks the Benelux and gain enough war score for Germany to give you control of state 16.

The Revolution Triumphant	Have Germany as a puppet of Soviet.	As Soviet Union. Follow the historical route, or immediately declare war on Poland and then Germany.
Once More Mate	Occupy Gallipoli as Australia.	As Australia. You need to move your fleet into the Black Sea before Turkey remilitarises the Bosphorus Strait. You can increase its range by basing it in Cyprus.
Forge of Victory	Have 50 factories as Belgium.	As Belgium. nics count toward total factories. Simply go Fascist and conquer Netherlands and Luxembourg.
Sunset Invasion	Occupy a coastal province in Europe as Mexico, and if in a faction have it contain only South American members or puppets.	As Mexico. You only need to occupy the state. Turn fascist and justify on Denmark.
Duce Nuked'em	Nuke Los Angeles as fascist Italy.	As Italy. After securing the Mediterranean, it can easily be done with a small 1944 strategic bomber fleet (without any escort) by taking control of states 118, 698, 696.
Operation Sea Lion	Control British mainland as Germany.	As Germany. 2\|\|5px}} }}
One Empire	Unite the entire world under the British Empire.	As United Kingdom. This is achievement requires a lot of grinding. Go Fascist and keep the empire from falling apart.
Party like it's 1520	Occupy Stockholm as communist Denmark.	As Denmark. —
Med plutonium...	Nuke Denmark as Sweden.	As Sweden. The nuked state must be both owned by and a core of Denmark. With Arms Against Tyranny, Denmark becomes a puppet of Germany instead of capitulating.

Big Entente	As France, complete the "Little Entente" National Focus, and have all German cores owned by you or someone in your faction.	As France. —

Together for Victory

Achievement	What it asks for	Where to start
Braaaaains!	As Canada, complete the Send in the Zombies focus.	As Canada. Play historical and rush down economic focuses. When Germany declares war on Poland, join the war and rush down to Send in the Zombies.
District 9	As South Africa, have 9 civilian factories in Transvaal.	As South Africa. Convert military factories into civilian factories in Transvaal. Follow the Focus tree for free civilian factories.
Our Words Are Backed With Nuclear Weapons	As India, develop and deploy a nuke. You must have the Quit India Movement national spirit.	As British Raj. With Graveyard of Empires disabled, head for Quit India Movement and develop, build and deploy a nuclear bomb (remember to get some strategic bombers and fighters for air superiority). Potential targets include Romania once Turkey joins the Allies or Siam once they join Japan.
Crusader Kings	As South Africa, finish the A King for our People focus and take Jerusalem.	As South Africa. —
Crusader Kings 2	As South Africa, finish the Anti-Colonialist Crusade focus, release all European colonies via the focus, and take London.	As South Africa. The countries need to be released via event, not manually through the occupied territories screen.

It's 1812 All Over Again	As Canada, take and hold Washington D.C.	As Canada. Pick Patriation and Swastika Clubs as your first focuses. Go for Support a Synarchist Baja when you switch, get Mexico in your faction and attack the United States on the East Coast.
The weapons of the Third Emu War	As Australia, use a nuclear bomb on core Australian territory.	As Australia. Invent and build fighters, strategic bombers and nukes. Wait for Japan and let them conquer one state, which you should nuke.
I Am the Tong Master	As South Africa, break free from the UK and puppet another nation.	As South Africa. Release Namibia as your puppet when the game starts.
The Empire Strikes Back	As Britain, declare war on one of your former subjects.	As United Kingdom. Go for any sub-branch of the tree under A Change in Course branch. The Dominions will break ties with you.
The Puppetmaster	Have at least 51 subjects.	Play as Communist United Kingdom and declare war on France. Puppet as many of their colonies as possible.
Freegypt	As Egypt, go from puppet to a free nation using the autonomy system.	Start as the United Kingdom and build up Egypt as much as possible. Once completely full of military factories, release Egypt as a puppet (check "Play as" when the checkbox appears).

Death or Dishonor or Cake	As Romania, own a slice of all your starting neighbors.	As Romania. —
Neither Death nor Dishonor	As Romania, make it to 1942 with all the states you started it with and control either Moscow or Berlin.	As Romania. —
The Munich Disagreement	As Czechoslovakia, occupy Munich while at war with Germany.	As Czechoslovakia. —

Huge-oslavia	As Yugoslavia, occupy all your neighbouring countries (Austria, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, Italy and Greece).	As Yugoslavia. The achievement only requires control of the state, so it can be gained while at war.
The Balkan Powder Keg	As Yugoslavia, start the Second World War (i.e. be part of either the Axis or the Allies and at war with the other faction in a war you started).	As Yugoslavia. Choose fascist demagogue as your first Political Power spending, turn fascist (skip civil war option), complete Invite German Military Mission and join the Axis. Justify and declare war on the United Kingdom.
En Svensk Tiger	As Sweden, acquire a production license for a Tiger or Tiger II tank from Germany.	As Sweden. Choose the fascist demagogue as your first advisor and turn fascist. Avoid civil war if possible.
Lethal Straight	Have a production license from at least 5 of the 7 major powers.	It is recommended to play as a non-aligned nation to avoid the diplomatic penalty from different ideology which may block the “Request License Production” option. Improve relations with five of the seven major powers then license the basic infantry weapons.

Waking the Tiger

Sun Tzu Reborn	As Any Chinese Nation, have a level 9 field marshal.	As China. Any army leader: Is a field Marshal Skill Level more than 8
The People Have Stood Up!	With Mao as your leader, win the Chinese Civil War.	As Chinese Soviet Republic. 2\|\|5px}} }} }}
Made in China	As Communist China, have over 100 military factories.	As Chinese Soviet Republic. Simply follow the guide for The People Have Stood Up! and build a lot of military factories in your territory.
Tojo Shot First	As Japan, Nuke a core territory of the US before the US develops nuclear weapons.	As Japan. Follow the strategy for Sunrise Invasion. When you have nukes, release the United States and go to war with them.
Sunrise Invasion	As Japan, conquer Mexico then Europe before 1945.	As Japan. —
The Dragon Swallowed the Sun	As Manchukuo, Break free from Japan and annex your former Overlord without being in a faction.	As Manchukuo. Note: To get the achievement_the_dragon_swallowed_the_sun country flag, you must annex Japan without being in a faction. The "not in a faction" check is done when Japan gets annexed, so theoretically you are free to join factions during the game if you want to, as long as you leave before you annex Japan.

Monarchy is Back in Fashion	As Germany, Bring back the Kaiser and ensure that Italy is controlled by Victor Emmanuel by killing Mussolini.	As Germany. (This guide requires GTD disabled.) Follow the Return of the Kaiser and the Focus on the True Enemy path in the Oppose Hitler branch until you get to the Assassinate Mussolini B focus (AI will always agree to assassinate Mussolini). Australia-Hungary	As Australia, own all core territory of Hungary.	As Australia. Note: Only Easy before patch 1.12!
My Ships Don't Lie	As Colombia, form Gran Colombia and have 10 Carriers and 10 Battleships.	As Colombia. Requires the Restore the Bolívar Union decision.
I Swear I'm Not a Byzantophile	As Greece, Form Byzantine Empire.	As Greece. Easiest to follow the Byzantine path in the Greek focus tree introduced in Battle for the Bosporus, see Istanbul is Constantinople. Again.

Man the Guns

Achievement	What it asks for	Where to start
Team America	As the U.S.A., drop a nuclear bomb on Paris.	As United States. As a democratic nation, build a lot of planes, namely strategic bombers and fighters, and rush nuclear technology. Germany will control Paris.
History Repeated Itself	As the U.S.A., Win against the Confederate States. Again.	As United States. Completing either Full desegregation or Union representation Act will trigger a civil war with the Confederacy. To help the United States win the war, complete the WPA branch and Guarantee the American Dream beforehand.
Georgia On My Mind	As the U.S.A., own and fully control all three Georgias.	As United States. Collaborating with the Axis is the simplest route to achieving this. Help the Axis capitulate the Allies and the Comintern, and grab United Kingdom state 720 and Soviet Union state 231.
To Arms in Dixie!	As the U.S.A., start a new civil war as the South.	As United States. Complete America First and hire the fascist advisor. When ready and possible, complete Ally With the Silver Shirts to trigger the event chain leading to the civil war.
Arsenal of Democracy	As the U.S.A., have more than 300 military factories.	As United States. The easiest way to earn this achievement is to simply play on historical as the United States and build as many mics as possible. The Arsenal of Democracy branch of the focus tree gives mics for free, so make sure you complete it, along with the WPA branch to boost your industry.
Underpaid, Undersexed, and Under Eisenhower	As the U.S.A., assume faction leadership of the Allies, and have over 50 expeditionary divisions from the United Kingdom.	As United States. Simply play historical and join the Allies. You need 50% more factories and fielded manpower than the United Kingdom, which shouldn't be a problem after a few years of buildup.
Last for a Thousand Years	As the United Kingdom, accomplish the federation of the entire British Empire.	As United Kingdom. Can be done as any ideology. Make sure to improve relations and save up a few hundred political power before starting Hold the Imperial Conference.
Britzkrieg	As the United Kingdom, put Edward VIII in power, ally Germany and fully control Paris.	As United Kingdom. Follow the focus tree to Alliance with Germany. Justify against France and launch a naval invasion of Normandy.
Nothing Wrong with our Bloody Ships	As the United Kingdom, have at least 9 battlecruisers.	As United Kingdom. Battlecruisers are built with "Heavy Ship Hulls" and "Battlecruiser armor". Make the cheapest battlecruisers you can and build 6 at the same time (United Kingdom start with 3) with all your dockyards assigned, build more dockyards to speed up construction.
William Wallis	As the United Kingdom, put Edward VIII in power, enforce an American monarchy, and have both it and Scotland as subjects.	As United Kingdom. —
Crush the Dream	As a Communist United Kingdom, crush the American Dream by puppeting the U.S.A.	As United Kingdom. —
Treading the Narrow Path	As the Netherlands, do not cave to the Germans, continue the Zuiderzee works, and do not lose control of any of your continental European states until 1945.	As Netherlands. Note: Losing control of a state means losing control of a majority of its victory points. It is possible to lose a few provinces without invalidating the achievement.
Putting the Raid on the Medway to Shame	As the Netherlands, ensure the United Kingdom has no capital ships (carriers, battleships, battlecruisers, or heavy cruisers).	As Netherlands. Probably easier to fully annex the UK instead of trying to hunt down every single capital ship, as this will also count for the achievement to unlock.
Bevrijding	As the Netherlands, liberate the continental Netherlands after relocating the government to the East Indies.	As Netherlands. Simply play as Netherlands on Historical, and go down the Continue the War in Batavia branch. There is no point in trying to defend your European lands (as Continue the War in Batavia requires you to have capitulated), so build up your Asian possessions.
Mi Casa es tu Casa	As Mexico, host a government-in-exile.	As Mexico. To host a government in exile you need to be the leader of a faction which has the rule "allows hosting exiled governments". This is set by default on only a small handful of base factions, and the easiest ways to get this achievement (one of which is outlined in the next paragraph) require No Compromise, No Surrender to be enabled.
The New Home of the Revolution	As Mexico, put Trotsky in power and puppet the Soviet Union	As Mexico. Choose to invite Trotsky in the "Trotsky seeks refuge" event. Follow the rightmost side of the focus tree to become communist and put Trotsky in charge.
Assuming Direct Control	Starting as a minor power, assume faction leadership of the Allies, the Axis, or the Comintern.	As United States. Play as Romania and go down the Balkan Dominance branch. Increase your power as much as possible, by focusing on army, industry and by taking out Kingdom of Hungary and Bulgaria.
Vive la Jeune Ecole	As France, have at least 150 Destroyers and research the maximum torpedo launcher technology, before 1945.	As France. Turn fascist by going down the National Regeneration path. Join the Axis but not any war, and rush research towards Modern Ship Torpedo Launcher.
30 Minutes of Hel	As Poland in the 1939 “Blitzkrieg” scenario start, inflict over 1,800,000 casualties to Germany to beat the 2018 PDXCON HOI4 challenge. Extra bragging rights if you do it in 30 minutes or less!	As Poland. —
Pride and Extreme Prejudice	Sink the British Pride of the Fleet.	As United Kingdom. It can be done quickly as Japan. The Japanese fleet is immediately capable of sinking not just the HMS Hood, but the entire Royal Navy if played properly.
Do You Mined?	Lay at least 1,000 mines on the coastline of an enemy nation.	As Italy, remove your divisions from state 550 or state 559(keeping your ports for maximum efficiency). Lay mines on the Ethiopian shore with your starting navy until you reach 1000 mines.

La Résistance

Achievement	What it asks for	Where to start
BFFs	As Portugal, join the same faction as Great Britain.	As Portugal. Just go democratic and wait for world tension to rise. If La Résistance is enabled, you can rush towards Join the Allies as well.
Go Ahead, Macau My Day	As Portugal, create a collaboration government in Macau and have it own all Chinese states.	As Portugal. Note: This achievement requires states 326, 728 to be taken in a peace deal.
Play It, Sam	Have a spy network of at least 50% strength in Casablanca.	At game start, establish an agency and set your operatives on "Establish Spy Network" mission in state 461. The achievement will trigger once the network strength is over 50%.
Spies Trade	As India, become the spymaster for the Allies.	As British Raj. Increase your autonomy towards dominion. Meanwhile, create an intelligence agency and upgrade it three times with any upgrade.
Why Die For Danzig?	As Germany, turn France fascist and occupy Danzig without going to war with France.	As Germany. Boost fascism in France from the start of the game, then complete Danzig for Slovakia to gain control of state 85 without going to war with France. If France hasn't flipped by the time you get state 85, start a fascist coup in France.
I SEE EVERYTHING	Get over 90% intel in each category on a major without using code cracking.	In order for the achievement to fire, the decryption must not be complete or cracked, but if the player selects it and waits the 30 days, the achievement will fire.
Shaken, Not Stirred	Successfully stage a coup in any nation using a spy with the Seducer trait.	Start as any non-aligned country and get a spy with the seducer trait. Dutch East Indies is the easiest target as they have a high non-aligned popularity at the start and won't be building a spy agency until later.
Listen Very Carefully, I Shall Say This...	Have a French and British spy work together on the same Operation.	Check happens upon operation completion. At least 1 participating operative requires France, and at least 1 participating operative requires UK nationality.
Man of a Thousand Faces, Every One the Same	Have the same spy get captured twice.	The Soviet Union has the highest chance of capturing operatives, so expand your operative slots and send them all to the Soviet Union. After an operative gets captured, rescue them and send them to the Soviet Union again.
Turing Complete!	Fully decrypt all nations in the Axis.	As United Kingdom. At the start of the game create your spy agency and unlock all cryptology tech, you only need to decrypt Germany as they are the only member of the Axis.
One King, Two Crowns	As Bourbon Spain, hold all Spanish and French core states.	As Spain. —
We Will Rock You	As Spain, own Gibraltar.	As Spain. Turn historical AI off, since the United Kingdom may take the Revisit Colonial Policy branch of its focus tree containing the focus Withdraw from Contested Territories which will give state 118 to Spain for free along with it becoming a core state. If this occurs during the civil war, state 118 may not be given to the player's Spain but will be transferred once the civil war is won.
Well, I Didn’t Vote for You	Win the Spanish Civil War as the Anarchists.	As Spain. Anarchist Spain is created from either Masters of Our Own Fate focus or the Government Crackdown event. At the start of the game focus on building military factories in Valencia.
Our Chief Weapon is Surprise...	As Spain, have at least 5 spies and stage 5 coups against other nations.	As Spain. Join a major faction with a large number of members to be able to get enough spy slots. Do not join in the faction's wars so you can continue to trade with all countries and focus on spies to build up spy networks faster and stage coups more often.
Die, Perfidious Albion!	As Fascist France or Vichy France, occupy all of Great Britain.	As France. Rush the fascist focuses. Upon taking Utilize the Leagues, you will have access to decisions of boosting fascist and non-aligned popularity.
Second Time’s the Charm	As France, occupy Moscow while Napoleon VI is your country leader.	As France. Rush towards Proclaim the Third Empire focus to get Napoléon VI. Wait until Germany declares war on Poland and then declare war on the United Kingdom.
Don’t Die for Your Country	As Germany in a 1939 start, occupy all of Poland and France without taking more than 475 casualties.	As Germany. Note: Paradropping troops sets country flag "has_paradropped_flag" which prevents this achievement.

The AI's behaviour is yours to set. A run aimed at an achievement usually wants historical focus mode on, so the countries you are counting on do the things you are counting on.
Some achievements are easier on a country nobody plays. The wiki's notes name them constantly — Sinkiang for a faction, Haiti for waiting out the clock — because the requirement never says the run has to be hard.
Xbox has fewer. The Steam list is the longer one, and a few entries do not exist on the console version at all.
Achievement conditions move between patches. A note written for an older version can describe a focus that has since been renamed, so check the tree before committing forty hours to it.

Do I need ironman for achievements in Hearts of Iron IV?

Yes. Steam achievements only unlock with ironman enabled, so a normal save earns nothing. Ironman also disables console commands, which is why there is no way to cheat an achievement open.

Do mods disable achievements?

Any mod that changes gameplay turns ironman off, and without ironman no achievement can unlock. Cosmetic mods that do not touch gameplay are the exception.
