🎯 The core idea
Calico is a backline assassin, not a frontliner. Travel in Ava's cat form through the vents, heal and farm crates while you rotate, then jump a low-health or squishy target with Gloom Bombs, Leaping Slash and Return to Shadows. Rush Ava to tier 2 for lane sustain, build melee lifesteal and Stalker early, and save your ultimate for the moment that wins or escapes the fight.
- free costs nothing
- cheap small cost
- setup needs preparation
- grind pays off slowly
- skip the thing to stop doing
Who Calico is and what she does in a match
Calico is a shadowy assassin who stalks the city as her cat, Ava, and ambushes enemies with bombs and a claw dash. The wiki tags her Tricksy, Slippery and Burst Damage, and her base numbers fit that: 730 health, 2 health regen, 6.8 m/s move speed and 3 stamina. Her gun, Sweetest Lie, is a close-range spreadshot that fires 9 pellets in a diamond, holds 12 shots and reloads in 2.6 s, with damage falloff from 20 m to 58 m. Her light melee hits for 63 and her heavy melee for 116 before scaling, which matters because one of her abilities deals melee damage.
This deadlock calico guide is built on Prez's video "I Spent 100 Hours Learning CALICO to PROVE she Is BROKEN", uploaded September 14, 2026. That is after the June 30 Soul Urn and Unstable Rift update but before the September 16 balance patch and the September 29 City Never Sleeps map rework. The good news for anyone reading this in October 2026: the wiki's Calico update history shows no changes to her since July 28, 2026, so every ability number below is current. What did change is the map and the tunnels she lives in, covered in the tunnels section and in the last section.
The short answer to how to play calico in deadlock is the lesson the video learned the hard way. Prez spent his first games diving the enemy frontline and lost almost every fight, even against a Drifter only about 1,000 souls ahead of him. Calico's kit is single-target. She wins by choosing the fight: finding the low-health or squishy hero in the back, killing them, and leaving.
skip Don't stand in front of your team trading shots with a tank. That's the most common new Calico mistake, and the video shows it game after game.
Gloom Bombs: the opener that softens a target
Calico Gloom Bombs throws a cluster of 4 sticky bombs that explode after a short delay for 45 spirit damage each (plus 0.644 per point of spirit power) in a 3 m radius, on a 14 s cooldown. An enemy hit by several bombs takes 65% damage from each bomb after the first. The video explains why that line confuses people: it is a reduction, not a bonus. The first bomb deals the full amount and every extra bomb deals 65% of it.
| Gloom Bombs upgrade | Effect |
|---|---|
| Tier 1 | -3 s cooldown |
| Tier 2 | -6% melee resist for 6 s per bomb that touches the enemy |
| Tier 3 | +3 bombs (7 total) |
The tier 2 debuff is the reason Gloom Bombs open every combo. It lowers melee resist, and Leaping Slash deals melee damage, so bombs first makes the slash hit harder. The video describes the debuff as "-6 melee resistance". The wiki is more precise: it is -6% per bomb that touches the target, applied on impact, and it stacks additively since the June 11, 2026 patch. Four bombs landing on one hero is a much bigger debuff than a single -6%. You can see it working by the spinning icon over the enemy's head. Note that Dispel and debuff resist reduce or remove it.
free Aim at the enemy's center of mass. The wiki notes that this guarantees all bombs connect with a single hero up to 8 m away. Past that range the spread opens up, and the video points out that the bombs blow up on their own at max range. Throwing them at the enemy's feet also works because of the explosion radius, but it's the sloppy version.
Leaping Slash: damage, healing and the melee weave
Calico Leaping Slash dashes up to 9 m in any direction, including straight up, then slashes everything in a circle around where you land. It deals 60.4 melee damage (plus 0.8 per point of spirit power) on a 13 s cooldown, and if it hits at least one hero it heals you 40 (plus 1.4 per point of spirit power). The heal grows with spirit power, as the video says.
| Leaping Slash upgrade | Effect |
|---|---|
| Tier 1 | +25 heal |
| Tier 2 | Heroes killed within 3 s of a hit grant +200 souls |
| Tier 3 | +60 damage and a 50% cooldown refund on hero hit |
Things the wiki and the video both confirm:
- The dash stops on the first enemy hero it touches. Prez found this out in his first match when he tried to dash through someone. Use it as a gap closer, not a way to slip past a hero.
- It counts as a melee attack. Melee items like Melee Lifesteal and Stalker trigger off it, which is why early Calico builds lean on them.
- Light melee right after the slash roughly doubles the burst. Tap melee the moment the slash connects. The video's warning is fair: past the lowest ranks players will parry it, and a parried Calico usually dies. Weave it in when the target is facing away or busy with someone else.
setup The video also shows a movement trick with the Arctic Blast item: cast Arctic Blast, then Leaping Slash, and the expanding ice blast travels with you instead of staying where you cast it. This is how the build Prez browses in the video opens its combo.
Most top builds level Leaping Slash last, according to the video. Its tier 2 and tier 3 are strong late but don't change the early game, and your early melee items already make the slash hit hard.
Ava: the cat form that wins the lane
Calico Ava turns you into your cat for 15 s on a 30 s cooldown. You start with 30% bonus move speed that builds to 65% over 4 s, and you are hidden on the minimap. Even if an enemy or a trooper wave sees you, you don't show up on their map. Taking damage from an enemy hero resets the speed bonus and puts Ava on a 6 s cooldown, so it's for moving between fights, not for running out of one you're already losing.
| Ava upgrade | Effect |
|---|---|
| Tier 1 | +15 s duration |
| Tier 2 | +15 health regen and +40% max move speed |
| Tier 3 | Damage amp that builds while transformed, up to 18%, lingers 6 s after you leave Ava |
free Tier 2 is the upgrade that makes Calico a strong laner, and the video says every good build prioritizes it. Fifteen health regen while moving at up to 105% bonus speed means you never have to walk back to base to heal. Turn into Ava, go farm somewhere safe, and come back full.
Other Ava details from the wiki worth knowing:
- Clicking left mouse makes Ava meow, and enemies can hear it. In the video's 1v1, the opposing Calico used the sound of her own bombs to hide the transformation noise.
- Melee as Ava does a pounce that breaks crates and statues but deals no damage.
- If Ava runs out inside a vent, activate the transformation to be pushed out to the nearest open spot. If you don't, you lose about 6.7% of your max health per second until you get out.
skip Don't pop Ava and cancel it right away. The video calls this out in its last match: it puts the 30 s cooldown on for nothing, and then you don't have it when you need to heal or escape.
Vents and tunnels on the City Never Sleeps map
Ava can enter the vents into the underground tunnels. Inside, the wiki says every hero gets a 70% move speed boost (sprint speed isn't multiplied), and crates and golden statues spawn down there. Few heroes can follow. The wiki lists four that can use vents: Calico as Ava, Mo & Krill, Rem and Rat King. The video, recorded before Rat King came out on October 2, 2026, says only Mo and Rem can follow you, so add Rat King to the list. If none of those three are in the match, the tunnels are yours.
Two vent rules from the wiki to remember:
- You can't enter a vent while in combat, which means dealing or taking damage in the last 4 s. Break line of sight first, then go in.
- You can't enter vents while carrying the Soul Urn, as Ava or otherwise.
grind Learn the routes. The video's advice is to load a private match and run the tunnels as Ava until you know them, starting with the loop around the secret shops. The map in this screenshot is the old one, though. The September 29, 2026 City Never Sleeps rework rebuilt the map and its vent network, so practice on the current map. Don't trust route memories from before the rework.
Prez's other tunnel tip still applies: when you're underground, watch the minimap, not the crates in front of you. Enemies on the surface often can't tell you're below them.
Ava's damage amp: engage from the cat
Once Ava reaches tier 3, the cat form becomes your engage tool as well as your travel. The damage amp builds the longer you stay transformed, up to 18%, and stays on for 6 s after you change back. The buff shows on the left of your HUD (it reads +12% in this frame), so check it before you commit.
setup The way the video plays it: rotate to a fight as Ava, wait until the amp is near full, transform next to a squishy target and dump the full combo inside those 6 s. You get the heal on the way in and an 18% amp on Gloom Bombs, Leaping Slash and your gun.
The tier 3 amp was 20% when it was introduced. The July 28, 2026 patch cut it to 18% and cut the tier 2 speed from +45% to +40%. The video's numbers already match the current ones.
Return to Shadows: invulnerable reset
Calico Return to Shadows, her ultimate, turns you into shadows right away. You become untargetable, gain 20% move speed, can fly up and down a bit, and deal 150 spirit damage (plus 0.609 per point of spirit power) in a 7.5 m radius. After 3 s you come back out and deal that damage again. The base cooldown is 115 s.
| Return to Shadows upgrade | Effect |
|---|---|
| Tier 1 | -20 s cooldown |
| Tier 2 | +75 damage and +20% move speed |
| Tier 3 | When it ends, heal 450 and refund all ability cooldowns |
The video gets the tier 3 right: the 450 heal is a flat number, not scaled by spirit power. The wiki adds that healing items like Healing Booster still amplify it and anti-heal still reduces it. The cooldown refund resets Gloom Bombs, Leaping Slash and Ava, but not Return to Shadows itself. Items you used, like Arctic Blast, stay on their own cooldowns, which the video also points out.
That refund is the whole reason Calico can kill a full-health target. Use everything, ult, come back out and use everything again. Without tier 3 a full-health fight turns into a long shootout that her kit isn't built for.
free Two more uses from the video. You can ult to dodge enemy ultimates, such as a Lash ultimate coming down on you. And you can ult to escape, since the untargetable window plus the move speed carries you out of most bad positions. One thing Prez learned the hard way in his first games: you can't cast Return to Shadows again while you're coming out of it.
Calico skill order and ability upgrades
This calico skill order follows the priorities in the video and the build it shows. It isn't an official ranking, so treat it as a sensible default rather than the only way. Ability upgrades cost 1, 2 and 5 ability points for tiers 1, 2 and 3.
| Priority | Ability upgrade | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ava tier 1, then tier 2 | Health regen and speed carry the lane and your crate runs |
| 2 | Gloom Bombs tier 2 | Melee resist shred makes every Leaping Slash hit harder |
| 3 | Return to Shadows tier 1 | A shorter ult means more fights you can force |
| 4 | Return to Shadows tier 3 | 450 heal and full cooldown refund: your kill and escape spike |
| 5 | Ava tier 3 | Up to 18% damage amp on every engage from the cat |
| 6 | Gloom Bombs tier 1 and tier 3 | The build shown in the video maxes bombs once Arctic Blast is bought |
| 7 | Return to Shadows tier 2, Leaping Slash upgrades | Late-game damage, last points |
When Gloom Bombs tier 3 comes in is the main thing builds disagree on. The build in the video moves it up right after Arctic Blast for more burst. Melee-heavy players leave it later.
Calico build: items by phase
The video's verdict on the calico build is that almost every good melee build looks the same right now, and that the best players in the world use melee Calico. Prez browses a public build called "Maldox Calico SPIRIT" (build ID 395218, last updated September 9, 2026), whose notes give its combo as Leaping Slash, Arctic Blast, Gloom Bombs at the target's feet, then ult. In his own games the HUD shows Melee Lifesteal, Stalker, Cold Front, Extra Spirit into Improved Spirit and Mystic Vulnerability, and in his final match he adds Dispel Magic and plans Spirit Sap into Focus Lens.
The table below is the best calico build deadlock players are running in that video, with prices and effects checked on the wiki:
| Phase | Item | Cost | Why Calico wants it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early | Melee Lifesteal | 800 | +12% melee damage; your next melee heals 100, and Leaping Slash triggers it |
| Early | Sprint Boots | 800 | +2 m sprint speed and out-of-combat regen for rotating |
| Early | Extra Spirit | 800 | +10 spirit power for bomb damage and slash healing |
| Early | Stalker | 1,600 | Melee or bullet damage within 8 m wounds the target: 17 spirit DPS, -6% bullet resist, reveal, and move speed for you |
| Mid | Cold Front | 1,600 | Ice blast that slows by 48%; upgrades to Arctic Blast |
| Mid | Improved Spirit | 1,600 | +18 spirit power (upgrade of Extra Spirit) |
| Mid | Mystic Vulnerability | 1,600 | Your spirit damage cuts enemy spirit resist by 8% |
| Mid | Spirit Sap | 1,600 | Target loses 9% spirit resist and 30 spirit power for 12 s; upgrades to Focus Lens |
| Mid | Dispel Magic | 3,200 | Removes slows and other non-ultimate debuffs, heals 250 |
| Late | Arctic Blast | 6,400 | 175 spirit damage, 1 s freeze, then slow; the combo starter |
| Late | Focus Lens | 6,400 | Silences a target, and 35% of the damage dealt during the silence hits again when it ends |
| Late | Scourge | 6,400 | Situational; the video didn't test it |
For a calico late game build, the end-of-game picks are Arctic Blast and Focus Lens: one locks the whole fight down and the other silences the one hero you want dead. Scourge gets a mention at the end of the video as an item Prez never tried, so it's listed here as an option, not a recommendation.
cheap The first 800 souls should go to Melee Lifesteal. Stalker comes next, and the video's reason is simple: both trigger every time Leaping Slash connects. That makes Calico a sustain laner who wins trades with constant healing and a damage-over-time wound. The wiki confirms Leaping Slash benefits from melee items, and Stalker's wiki page lists Leaping Slash as a melee damage ability that procs it.
Calico laning and early farming
Calico laning is about trading with Leaping Slash and never leaving the lane empty-handed. Slash in, let Melee Lifesteal and Stalker heal you and wound them, and back off before they can answer. Once you have Ava at tier 2, the lane changes:
- When you're low, don't walk back to base. Turn into Ava, go to a side spot or into the tunnels and break crates while you regen 15 health a second. Your lane partner farms the wave alone and you farm souls nobody else can reach, then you come back full or gank another lane.
- Split the lane on purpose. In his final match Prez took the tunnels while his lane partner farmed the waves, and they ended up with the most souls of any lane.
grind One change since the video: the September 16, 2026 patch increased the initial spawn time and respawn time of breakables in the tunnels. The wiki's crate rules put tunnel crates at 5:00 and a 5-minute respawn after that patch. Your crate runs still pay, but plan your loop around those timers instead of expecting fresh crates every rotation.
Calico is also good at the Soul Urn, as the video says, because Ava gets her to the urn fast and unseen. Keep the wiki rule in mind: you can't enter vents while carrying it, so the delivery itself happens above ground.
The video also mentions a mid-game slump. If you fall behind on items, your burst stops killing people. Prez's fix in his ranked game was to buy Dispel Magic earlier than planned once the enemy started building slows.
Teamfights: picks, combos and staying alive
In a teamfight, Calico's job is the backline. Wait at the edge of the fight in Ava until the amp is built, then jump the enemy carry or whoever is already low. The video's coaching session adds two points of mindset that are worth keeping:
- You are not the carry. Help your team's carry win their fights and take the soul bags, and shut down the enemy carry.
- Low damage numbers are normal. Calico's kit is single-target, so a good game can still end on a modest hero damage number. Judge your game by kills, picks and deaths, not the scoreboard damage column.
The basic combo in calico deadlock fights:
- Gloom Bombs on the target (melee resist shred).
- Leaping Slash onto them, then a quick light melee if they're not looking at you.
- Arctic Blast during or before the slash to freeze them and anyone nearby.
- Return to Shadows when they turn on you. At tier 3, come out, and use bombs and slash again.
These calico tips come from the video's conclusion: Calico is one of the best escape heroes in the game. Leaping Slash heals and moves you, Return to Shadows makes you untargetable and heals 450, and Ava plus the vents pull you out of sight. With all that, your deaths should be low. Advanced players even let themselves get focused on purpose to bait out enemy ultimates, then escape. That's a high-level move, and the video tells newer players not to worry about it yet.
skip Don't push Walkers alone with Calico. Prez says it in his last match, and the kit backs him up: her damage is built for heroes, not structures.
How to counter Calico, and how Calico handles counters
The wiki lists the strongest calico counter on each of her ability pages: Slowing Hex. It silences movement-based abilities, and the wiki says it disables Leaping Slash, Ava and Return to Shadows. A hexed Calico can't dash in, can't turn into the cat and can't use her ult to escape. Other answers that follow from her kit:
- Parry the follow-up melee. Her biggest burst is Leaping Slash into a light melee. Parry the melee and she's stuck in your face with her main ability on cooldown.
- Anti-heal. Her Leaping Slash heal and the 450 from Return to Shadows are both reduced by healing reduction effects.
- Wait out the ult. Return to Shadows always lasts 3 s and explodes again where she comes out. Back off, then hit her when she reappears.
- Group up. She hunts heroes who are alone or already low. Vent heroes (Mo & Krill, Rem, Rat King) can also chase her underground.
- Debuff resist and Dispel shorten or remove the Gloom Bombs melee resist shred.
From Calico's side, the video's answer to slows and Slowing Hex is Dispel Magic. It removes all non-ultimate debuffs, heals 250 when it removes something and gives 2 m move speed for 3 s. It can't be used while stunned or asleep, so use it on the slow, not after the stun lands.
What changed since the video was recorded
The video was uploaded September 14, 2026. Here is what has changed since then and what hasn't:
- Calico herself: no changes. Her wiki update history ends at July 28, 2026, so the ability numbers in the video and in this guide are current as of October 19, 2026.
- The map: completely changed. The September 29, 2026 City Never Sleeps update reworked the map, renamed neutral camps to Haunts and added new breakables. The streets, vents and tunnel routes in the video's footage (including this frame) are the old map. The playstyle still works, but relearn the routes. This calico build city never sleeps players run is the same melee build, because none of the items it uses were reworked out of the game.
- Tunnel crates: slower. The September 16 patch increased initial spawn and respawn times for breakables in the tunnels.
- Slows: weaker globally. The same patch reduced slow values across the game, so Cold Front and Arctic Blast slow a little less than before. The numbers in the item table are the current wiki values.
- New vent hero. Rat King, released October 2, 2026, can use the tunnels too.
If you're looking for a calico build october 2026 players can trust, the item table above is current. Check the in-game build browser for newer versions of the same melee core.
How this guide was fact-checked
- Checked against deadlock.wiki: Calico's base stats and weapon, every ability's numbers, cooldowns and all twelve upgrades, the ability notes (dash stops on the first hero, Ava's meow and pounce, the vent damage when Ava expires, the tier 3 refund not resetting the ult), her full update history through July 28, 2026, the Tunnel page (vent heroes, 70% speed, 4 s combat lockout, no Soul Urn in vents), the Soul Urn page, the Updates page for September and October 2026, and the cost and stats of every item in the build table.
- Corrections to the video: Gloom Bombs tier 2 is -6% melee resist per bomb, stacking additively, not a flat "-6 melee resistance". Rat King can also use the tunnels now, not only Mo & Krill and Rem. Tunnel crates spawn and respawn more slowly since September 16, 2026. The vents and routes shown are from the pre-rework map. The wiki also bars vent use while carrying the Soul Urn, which limits the video's urn advice to the run above ground.
- From the video only: the melee-into-light-melee weave and how often it gets parried by rank, the Arctic Blast traveling with Leaping Slash, the item build (read from the build browser and Prez's in-game HUD), the playstyle and mindset advice, and the mid-game slump. The skill order is an editorial default built from the video's priorities, not an official ranking. The wiki has no separate Calico abilities page; all ability data comes from the abilities section of her main page.
What this guide doesn't answer
- Where Calico ranks in the current meta. That belongs on the Deadlock tier list, which is kept up to date separately.
- Exact vent and tunnel routes on the new map. The video's footage predates the rework. The Deadlock map guide covers the current layout.
- A gun-focused Calico build. The video found no strong one and the top players build melee, so there's no tested gun build to recommend.
- Matchup-by-matchup advice. Beyond the general counters above, the video only shows a few lanes, and it's not enough to rate individual matchups.
- Street Brawl. Calico's ult cooldown and item draft differ in that mode, and this guide covers the standard mode only.
Frequently asked
What is the best Calico build in Deadlock?
The current Calico build is melee. Start with Melee Lifesteal, Sprint Boots and Extra Spirit, then Stalker, because Melee Lifesteal and Stalker both trigger every time Leaping Slash hits. Mid game add Cold Front, Improved Spirit, Mystic Vulnerability, Spirit Sap and Dispel Magic. Late game upgrade into Arctic Blast and Focus Lens.
What is Calico's skill order in Deadlock?
Take Ava to tier 2 first for +15 health regen and +40% max move speed, then Gloom Bombs tier 2 for the melee resist shred. Next comes Return to Shadows tier 1 and tier 3 (450 heal and a full refund of your other cooldowns), then Ava tier 3 for up to 18% damage amp. Leaping Slash upgrades usually come last.
How do you play Calico in Deadlock?
Play her as a backline assassin, not a frontliner. Rotate as Ava through the vents while you heal and farm crates, then jump a low-health or squishy hero with Gloom Bombs, Leaping Slash and a quick melee. Use Return to Shadows to dodge, escape or reset your abilities and finish the kill.
How do you counter Calico in Deadlock?
Slowing Hex is the strongest counter: the wiki says it disables Leaping Slash, Ava and Return to Shadows. Also parry the light melee she throws after Leaping Slash, buy anti-heal against her slash and ult heals, stay grouped so she can't pick you off alone, and back off during her 3 second ult, then hit her when she reappears.
Did City Never Sleeps change Calico?
Calico's abilities haven't changed since July 28, 2026, so her numbers are the same. The September 29, 2026 City Never Sleeps rework rebuilt the map and its vents, so you need to relearn the tunnel routes. Tunnel crates also spawn and respawn more slowly since September 16, and Rat King can now use the vents too.
