Core Idea

The whole build in one panel: near-guaranteed crits on a seven-projectile Freezing Pulse, multiplied across five crab totems.

The "CrabMan" build uses the unique staff Crustacean's Call on the Hierophant: the staff summons crab totems that cast their linked spell on their own. In this version, the totems cast Freezing Pulse, providing steady ranged cold damage and crowd control through freezing while the character positions the totems and maintains the Hierophant's aura. This is the second, fully endgame version of lytylisius's guide — the previous one was focused on leveling with 6-link gear.

1. Introduction and What This Build Is NOT

This is the per-totem number behind the roughly 13 million claim, before hypothermia, bed of frost and shock are layered on top.

Before diving into the details, it's worth clearly understanding the build's scope: this is NOT a quick leveling guide and NOT a budget league starter — it's a fully endgame version, built for a character with gear already assembled. Crab totems are summoned by the Crustacean's Call staff and independently cast Freezing Pulse, while the player controls their placement and maintains the Hierophant's aura. The video shows a live example of map farming in a snowy area, where the totems keep their distance and control the crowd through freezing.

Checklist:

  • Understand that this is an endgame guide, not a leveling version
  • Acquire the unique staff Crustacean's Call
  • Get familiar with the basic principle behind how crab totems work

2. Crab Totem Mechanics, Bugs, and Important Information

The crabs cap out below your movement speed, so outrunning them opens the dead windows where nothing is being attacked.

The hard numbers that govern the line-of-sight rule: six metres of totem range, five totems, and a 25.8 second lifetime.

Crab totems have several nuances worth knowing in advance: they inherit range and some of the player's modifiers, but there are specific bugs with debuff stacking and totem AI behavior near the edges of the arena. The guide's author specifically points out that totems sometimes get "stuck" at certain points and need to be manually re-summoned, and that their attack range depends on the specific configured spell. Understanding these quirks saves you from confusion during your first attempts at assembling the build.

Checklist:

  • Account for the totems' AI quirks
  • Watch for totems potentially getting stuck in the arena
  • Periodically re-summon totems manually as needed

3. Skill Tests on Crab Totems

Storm Call was the strongest lightning result, clearing Blight bosses without the pump taking damage.

Hex Blast posted the highest single target damage of every skill tested across fire, cold, lightning and chaos.

The author tested dozens of active skills on totems to determine the most effective combinations. The "memes" section shows amusing but weak options; next come sequential tests of lightning, cold, and chaos skills, and it all wraps up with a comparison between the best budget and best premium options. This format lets you quickly figure out which skills are worth trying first depending on your budget.

Checklist:

  • Review the lightning skill tests
  • Review the cold and chaos skill tests
  • Compare budget and premium options against each other

4. Why Freezing Pulse?

Damage alone favoured Hex Blast, but its internal cooldowns made clear feel stuttery, which is why Freezing Pulse won the slot.

After a series of tests, the author justifies choosing Freezing Pulse as the main spell for the totems: it combines steady ranged damage, natural freeze for crowd control, and good compatibility with cold-element support gems. Unlike other tested options, Freezing Pulse doesn't require rare gear to function properly, which makes it a practical choice for long-term play.

Checklist:

  • Understand the advantages of Freezing Pulse over the other tested skills
  • Choose cold-element support gems

5. Gear Choices

The staff is what makes crab totems exist at all, and this corrupted copy stacks flat cold damage on top of a 50% global crit multiplier.

Flasked armour reaches 25,501 for 90% physical reduction, and chaos resistance is capped at 75% rather than left as the usual hole.

Three extra gem levels plus reservation efficiency and attribute relief is why no other amulet is competitive.

The template for every armour piece here: flat plus increased armour and life as prefixes, regen and a resistance as suffixes.

The foundation of the gear is the unique staff Crustacean's Call, which defines the whole direction of the build. Next comes a typical Hierophant set: helmet and body armor with increased aura effect and elemental resistances, rings and amulet with increased maximum life, while belt and boots are chosen for resistance cap and movement speed. The author's key advice: don't rush straight for expensive rare items — first put together a basic setup from available options, then gradually upgrade each slot.

Checklist:

  • Acquire the Crustacean's Call staff as the foundation of the build
  • Cap your elemental resistances before improving other stats
  • Gradually upgrade slots instead of going for expensive gear right away

6. Skills

Levels beat flat added cold damage here, and the +3 amulet plus Empower is what carries the gem to 28.

This 30% more multiplier never shows in the totem tooltip, yet everything you fight is permanently chilled.

The main skill, Freezing Pulse, is socketed into the staff and cast automatically by the totems; support gems are chosen to increase cold damage, totem count, and freeze effectiveness. It's worth highlighting Ice Spear of Splitting as an alternative option for dense packs of enemies, where projectile spread provides better area coverage than standard Freezing Pulse. Additionally, the character uses support skills for the Hierophant's aura and mobility that don't depend directly on the totems.

Checklist:

  • Socket Freezing Pulse into the Crustacean's Call staff
  • Choose support gems for cold damage and totem count
  • Consider Ice Spear of Splitting for dense packs of enemies

7. Passives and Trading Warning

At 140 devotion this single jewel is worth 28% all resistances and 56% increased totem damage.

This is the pair bought for four and three divine that was instantly relisted at fifty; wait for the price to settle instead of paying the spike.

The passive tree is focused on the Staff Mastery cluster next to the totem node area, which significantly boosts attack speed, range, and the crabs' survivability. The author separately emphasizes an important trading warning: some of the build's unique items are heavily tied to the current version of the game and league mechanics, so before buying expensive items, check their current market price rather than relying on outdated screenshots or other people's build guides.

Checklist:

  • Level up the Staff Mastery cluster in the passive tree
  • Check current prices of unique items before buying
  • Don't rely on outdated data about item prices

Frequently asked

Is the crab totem Hierophant build good enough for uber bosses?

Damage lands roughly between 15 and 20 million, and the creator puts it closer to 20. The per-totem tooltip multiplied by five reaches about 13 million before Hypothermia's roughly 30 percent more, Bed of Frost and shock are layered on. That clears essentially all regular content, but it is not an uber pinnacle killer. It is also a poor Simulacrum or Ultimatum build, since its defences are not built for heavy ground effects.

Why do my crab totems stop attacking when I move?

The crabs fire off your line of sight, and their movement speed is capped rather than scaling with yours, so once you outrun them they trail behind without engaging. Dropping a fresh totem the moment you see a pack pauses you just long enough for all five to catch up and fire. Range matters too: your distance to the enemy plus your distance to the totem must fit inside the skill's range, which is why Exsanguinate fails here.

What is the best skill to use with crab totems in 3.29?

Across every element tested, Hex Blast had the highest single target damage and killed Blight bosses with no towers built. Storm Call was the strongest lightning option, and for cold on the lowest possible budget Vortex won, closely followed by Freezing Pulse. Righteous Fire totems are a trap because only one instance per totem deals damage, and Astral Projector plus Nova skills cast noticeably slower than Vortex, which looks like a bug.

Should I use Empower or Added Cold Damage on Freezing Pulse totems?

For Freezing Pulse, gem levels win: swapping Empower out for Added Cold Damage lowered the tooltip in the creator's own side-by-side. The rule reverses on skills with a low base hit, where Ice Spear went from 305 to 323 with Added Cold Damage. Without the currency for an Empower, Inspiration Support or Added Cold Damage are the fallbacks. Socket Freezing Pulse in blue too, since its damage falloff is time-based rather than distance-based.

Why did the jewels for this build suddenly cost 50 divine?

Price manipulation after a build video goes public. The creator bought his Inevitable Judgement jewels for four and three divine, and within a day traders had relisted them at 50 divine, a common three to ten times markup. By the next morning there were twelve listed at five to six divine. Wait the spike out rather than paying it. Kingmaker had genuinely risen from about nine to twenty divine, but it is not mandatory.
