🎯 The core idea
Venator is a slow, very tanky gun carry whose whole kit scales with weapon damage. Take Gutshot to tier 2 first so the wall stun lasts long enough for a free heavy melee, then max Ira Domini for its three execute stakes. Build weapon and sustain items in lane, add Rapid Recharge and Ricochet later, and play near walls, cover and your own traps.
- free costs nothing
- cheap small cost
- setup needs preparation
- grind pays off slowly
- skip the thing to stop doing
Who Venator is in the current patch
Venator (Father Quinn Rourke, a Vatican monster hunter) joined Deadlock on February 5, 2026. He plays as a gun carry who is also hard to kill. The wiki lists 820 base health with 2 health regen, 3 stamina and 6.4 m/s move speed, but only 1 m/s of sprint speed, so he is one of the slowest heroes to rotate. His gun, 51:20, is a 33-round SMG: 8 damage per bullet, 7.94 bullets per second, a 2.8 s reload and 63.5 DPS at base. Falloff starts at 18 m and ends at 47 m, so he wants to fight at mid range or closer.
Three of his four abilities deal weapon damage, which is why this deadlock venator guide treats him as a pure gun hero. Every weapon item you buy also powers up the grenade, Gutshot and the crossbow ultimate. Only the trap scales with spirit power. As the newer source video puts it, every soul you put into gun items raises the damage of almost every ability in his kit.
Which patch this covers. The row's original source is VPESPORTS DEADLOCK's guide from September 1, 2026, which mostly watches a top-100 player's full match. It came out before the September 16 balance patch and the September 29 City Never Sleeps map rework. So the build here comes from a newer video: Elliottgiga's "How to Play VENATOR", uploaded October 17, 2026, which shows a current build. Venator's own wiki history lists no changes since September 16, 2026, when Ira Domini started working with Ricochet and Split Shot. The October 5 and October 14 patches did not touch him or the items below. That makes this the current venator build for City Never Sleeps and for October 2026.
Consecrating Grenade: poke and anti-heal
Consecrating Grenade fires a grenade that bounces once, then explodes in a 4.5 m radius. It deals 35 damage (x1 weapon scaling) and sets enemies on fire for 3.5 s at 10 damage per second. Burning heroes take -30% incoming healing. While they burn, they also deal pure damage to their own teammates standing nearby. Base cooldown is 25 s.
| Tier | Upgrade | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | -5 s cooldown | Grenade every 20 s |
| 2 | +1.5 m radius, +1 s burn | 6 m blast, 4.5 s of burn |
| 3 | -20% incoming healing, allows charges | -50% healing in total; works with charge items |
free Both videos give the same aiming tip: throw the grenade at the floor in front of a target and let it bounce up into them. It is much easier to land than a direct hit on a moving hero, and it can hit two lane troopers at once. One correction to both videos: the tier 3 "charges" do not add extra grenades by themselves. The wiki notes that it only lets the grenade use charge items such as Rapid Recharge. So it becomes strong once you own those items.
Gutshot: the wall stun that sets up everything
Gutshot fires a 10 m shotgun cone for 60 damage (x0.7 weapon scaling) and knocks enemies back. If the target lands within 7 m of a wall, they are stunned for 0.6 s and take 30 bonus damage (x0.8 weapon scaling). Base cooldown is 23 s.
| Tier | Upgrade | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | +25 damage | 85 base damage |
| 2 | -10 s cooldown, +0.4 s stun | 13 s cooldown, 1.0 s wall stun |
| 3 | On wall stun: next heavy melee is blessed | +115 pure damage, executes under 8% health |
Tier 2 is the breakpoint both videos stress. A 0.6 s stun is too short to land a heavy melee before the target recovers and parries it. At 1.0 s you can follow every wall stun with a heavy melee. That matters because a parried heavy melee stuns you for 2.75 s, according to the wiki's melee page. The VPESPORTS video adds a detail: fire Gutshot from close range and then melee. If you cast it from a side dash, the target flies too far away for the heavy melee to connect.
The tier 3 blessed melee lasts 5 s, is not used up if you miss, and is cancelled if the target parries. Elliottgiga shows a single blessed heavy melee hitting for about 400 in the sandbox, which is why some players build Venator around melee.
setup Gutshot is also movement. If you cast it while airborne, the wiki confirms it pushes you away from where you are aiming, both up and back. Jump, turn toward a wall or the enemy, and fire it to escape a gank. The VPESPORTS video warns that the cast animation is longer than similar tricks on other heroes, so press it right after the first jump.
Hex-Lined Snap Trap: catch, reveal, amplify
Hex-Lined Snap Trap kicks out a trap that arms after a short delay. The first enemy hero to step on it takes 80 spirit damage (x2.2 spirit scaling), is immobilized for 1.25 s and is revealed for 6 s. You hold 2 charges with 8 s between charges and a 28 s cooldown, and each trap lasts 30 s. Elliottgiga's tooltip shows 87 damage because his trap already had some spirit scaling. The wiki's base value is 80.
| Tier | Upgrade | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | -11 s cooldown | 17 s cooldown |
| 2 | +1 s immobilize | 2.25 s root |
| 3 | +1 charge, +30% damage vs revealed targets | 3 traps; the caught target takes more damage |
Traps only trigger on heroes, never on troopers or Haunts. Enemies can shoot them out with a single bullet, and since September 29 Graves can destroy them with her gun too. Abilities, items and melee do not break them. So hide them: behind corners, around the jungle camp you are farming, at the bottom of a drop the enemy has to take. VPESPORTS shows a top player trapping the spot next to a Secret Shop, and another time turning his back on a trap so a teleporting Drifter landed in it.
free The trap combo with Gutshot: kick a trap behind your target, then Gutshot them into it. If the wall stun misses, the trap still roots them. Elliottgiga says the tier 3 bonus applies to your teammates' damage too. The wiki only describes it as "+30% damage against revealed targets", so treat the team-wide part as the video's claim.
Ira Domini: the execute ultimate
Ira Domini swaps your SMG for a crossbow loaded with 3 stakes for up to 15 s. Each stake deals 120 damage with x1.5 weapon scaling. The last stake is blessed: it adds 115 pure damage (x3 scaling) and executes heroes it leaves under 8% health. Cooldown is 160 s, and since July 28 it starts as soon as you cast, not after the crossbow is put away.
| Tier | Upgrade | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | +1.2 m/s move speed while active | Helps a slow hero chase |
| 2 | -15 s cooldown, +65 blessed damage | 145 s cooldown, harder final stake |
| 3 | All stakes are blessed | Every stake deals bonus pure damage and can execute |
The stakes are hitscan, pierce through enemies, deal 30% critical headshot damage and do not lose damage over distance. There are timing costs to plan around. Switching to the crossbow and back takes about 1 s, each stake reload takes about 0.8 s, and you cannot throw the grenade while it is out. Since September 16, Ricochet makes every stake bounce and Split Shot fires 3 bolts per stake. That is the main reason Ricochet is in the current late game build.
cheap Use it to finish fights, not to start them. Hold it until a target is low or caught in a trap, then spend the stakes. With tier 3, each stake did close to 450 damage in Elliottgiga's test with no items.
Venator skill order and ability upgrades
Ability points cost 1, 2 and 5 for tiers 1, 2 and 3 of each ability. This venator skill order combines both videos:
- Gutshot to tier 2 as soon as you can. The 1.0 s wall stun is your lane kill threat.
- Ira Domini tier 1, 2, then 3. The VPESPORTS replay shows the top player maxing his ultimate around the first Soul Urn. Elliottgiga suggests rushing it right after the lane so every teamfight has an execute.
- Consecrating Grenade tier 1, 2, then 3, timed with your charge items (Recharging Rush and Rapid Recharge), so the tier 3 charges actually work.
- Hex-Lined Snap Trap upgrades last. Elliottgiga calls the trap's tier 3 a second-to-last or last pick.
- Gutshot tier 3 fits wherever you want it if you go for a melee build. Otherwise it is a late pick.
These venator ability upgrades follow one idea: first the stun that makes your melee safe, then the ultimate that scales hardest with gun items, then the cooldowns that make your grenade spammable.
Best Venator build for City Never Sleeps
The build shown in Elliottgiga's October 17 video is Parzelion's public build. It is bought left to right and is mostly weapon items with a few strong defensive picks. Item costs follow the shop tiers (800, 1,600, 3,200, 6,400 souls).
| Phase | Items in buy order | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Lane (0 to about 10 min) | Restorative Shot, Close Quarters, Intensifying Magazine, Weakening Headshot, Battle Vest, Bullet Lifesteal, Titanic Magazine, Fleetfoot, Spirit Resilience | Weapon damage boosts every ability; lifesteal and resists keep you in lane |
| Mid game | Berserker, Warp Stone, Siphon Bullets, Rapid Recharge, Ballistic Enchantment (imbue on an ability) | Fire rate, a gap-closer for a slow hero, and charges for grenade and trap |
| Late game | Ricochet, Vampiric Burst, Silencer | Ricochet makes every Ira Domini stake bounce; Silencer cuts spirit damage |
| Situational | Glass Cannon, Inhibitor, Crippling Headshot, Armor Piercer, Spellbreaker, Plated Armor, Unstoppable; Counterspell, Dispel Magic or Metal Skin when needed | Swap in for the threat in front of you |
The wiki supports the core choices. Battle Vest gives +18% bullet resist plus +18% weapon damage and +7% fire rate while you are above 65% health. Weakening Headshot cuts the target's bullet resist by 12% for 12 s, a debuff your whole team benefits from. Fleetfoot gives +3 m/s move speed and +40% slow resist for 5 s on a 16 s cooldown, so it helps the slowest part of Venator's kit.
setup The September VPESPORTS replay used an older build that still works. It starts with Monster Rounds and Weakening Headshot (both visible as purchases in the replay), then Extra Health, Battle Vest before 8 minutes, Hollow Point, Enduring Speed, a lifesteal item, Recharging Rush, Rapid Recharge and Ballistic Enchantment. Both builds agree on the basics: buy your first weapon item early, and get bullet resist and lifesteal before the first big fight.
Venator late game build and swap items
Your venator late game build depends on how the game is going. These venator items come from Elliottgiga's suggestions, with numbers checked against the wiki:
- grind Glass Cannon (6,400): +80% weapon damage for -13% max health. Venator's base health and his health items make the trade cheaper for him than for most carries. Each kill also adds +7% fire rate (up to 8 stacks, and you lose one when you die).
- Inhibitor (6,400): bullets build up to -30% outgoing damage and -40% incoming healing on the target. It stacks with the grenade's healing cut against healers and tanks.
- Silencer (6,400): +12% spirit resist, and every bullet cuts the target's spirit damage by 25% for 6 s. Buy it over Inhibitor when the enemy has a lot of spirit damage.
- Fortitude (3,200): +375 health and +1.5 m/s move speed while you are above 75% health. A good way to offset Glass Cannon.
- Spellslinger (6,400): every ability or item cast gives a stacking fire rate buff (+11% per stack, up to 6). Strongest once grenade and trap have charges.
- Melee build: Melee Charge and Lifestrike, together with Gutshot tier 3, turn every wall stun into a blessed heavy melee. Elliottgiga calls it fun but harder to pull off.
skip Don't buy spirit power to boost the trap. Only the trap scales with spirit, so every soul spent on spirit is a soul your grenade, Gutshot and crossbow don't get.
Venator laning: walls, cover and traps
These venator tips for the lane come from both videos. Stand near walls, pillars and corners. Gutshot only stuns when there is a wall within 7 m behind the target, so you want trades where the enemy has a wall behind them. Your hitbox is big and you are slow, so don't stand in the open. Peek, shoot and step back behind cover. Your SMG is hitscan, so players who are good at tracking will like it.
free Kick traps behind the cover you are fighting near. When the enemy backs off to reset, they walk into them. Elliottgiga also likes waiting in the side-lane veils, where the enemy can't see you, to push the wave and catch heroes. On the City Never Sleeps map the wiki adds Steam Vents near Secret Shops, Haunts and the Mid-Boss. They hide you and give regen until you take damage.
The VPESPORTS replay shows why Venator wins lanes. His base stats let him keep trading, and his first weapon item comes early. Pick Restorative Shot against very aggressive lanes for extra sustain. Then farm whenever there is nothing to fight. Elliottgiga's main rule is to never fall behind on souls, because the whole kit runs on weapon items. Cultist Sacrifice is a fine pick if you plan to farm a lot, though since September 16 it gives 170% bonus souls, down from 180%.
Teamfights and the comeback-resist trap
Venator is not an engager. In the VPESPORTS replay the top player keeps his spot behind his frontline. He throws grenades into groups, kicks traps on flank routes, and only steps forward with Gutshot when an enemy dives him. With a 4,000-health late game build he still avoided taking needless risks. Use the grenade early in a fight: burning heroes spread pure damage to their teammates and heal less. Save Ira Domini for the cleanup, when the execute matters.
skip Don't fight inside the enemy's comeback zone. The VPESPORTS video warns about a flat 35% resist bonus when the losing team takes a comeback objective. That number is out of date. The wiki now says the Unstable Rift's comeback resist (bullet, spirit and debuff resist within 35 m) scales with the match, from 10% at minute 0 plus 1% per minute, up to 40% at 30 minutes. It is also tied to how far behind in souls the team is. The Soul Urn courier on a trailing team gets a similar scaling bonus. The advice still holds: when you are ahead, fight before they claim it or after the buff runs out, or farm the enemy jungle instead.
Venator counter: what beats him and what he beats
If you are looking for a venator counter, start with his weak spots:
- Shoot the traps. One bullet disarms a trap, and Graves can destroy them too. Check corners before you chase him.
- Parry after the wall stun. Before Gutshot tier 2 the stun is too short to follow with a heavy melee, so a parry punishes him with a 2.75 s stun.
- Unstoppable and Indomitable. The wiki notes that both Gutshot's stun and the trap's immobilize are blocked by these, and debuff resist shortens them.
- Plated Armor and disarm. Plated Armor can deflect even blessed stakes, and Ira Domini is affected by disarm.
- Kite him. With 1 m/s sprint speed and no mobility ability, Venator struggles against fast heroes who can stay out of Gutshot range and away from walls.
- Anti-heal. His sustain comes from lifesteal items, so anti-heal like Inhibitor or Healbane cuts into it.
In turn, Venator does well against tanks and healers (grenade plus Inhibitor cut their healing hard) and against heroes who have to stand next to walls. This guide does not rank deadlock venator tier placement, because no current tier list was checked for this patch.
How this guide was fact-checked
Every ability number, cooldown, upgrade and interaction comes from the deadlock.wiki Venator page and his update history, both read on October 19, 2026. There is no separate Venator/Abilities page on the wiki; the numbers are on the main hero page. Item stats come from each item's wiki page, and patch changes from the September 16, September 29, October 5 and October 14, 2026 update pages. The build in the table is the one shown on screen in Elliottgiga's October 17, 2026 video (Parzelion's build), so it is current for City Never Sleeps. The older build steps and the replay tips come from VPESPORTS DEADLOCK's September 1, 2026 video, with Monster Rounds and Weakening Headshot confirmed as purchases on screen.
Corrections and clarifications:
- The newer build is used because the original video predates the September 16 patch and the September 29 map rework. Venator himself has not changed since September 16.
- Grenade tier 3 does not add uses by itself; the wiki says it only lets the grenade work with charge items.
- The trap's base damage is 80 on the wiki, not the 87 on Elliottgiga's tooltip. The difference comes from his spirit scaling.
- The 35% comeback resist in the VPESPORTS video is out of date. The wiki now has it scaling from 10% up to 40% over 30 minutes.
- Elliottgiga's claim that the trap's tier 3 bonus applies to teammates' damage is not stated on the wiki and is credited to the video.
- The wiki's infobox lists 820 base health, while its May 22, 2026 update entry mentions 830. This guide uses the infobox value. The video's 1,000-plus health figures at a given level are not used.
What this guide doesn't answer
- A tier ranking: no current tier list was checked, so Venator is not placed on one.
- Per-hero matchups for the new City Never Sleeps heroes (Rat King, Baba, Solomon, Deadman Danny, Violet, Nurse Harrow): neither video tested against them.
- Full map routes and Haunt camp locations on the reworked map: those belong in a map or farming guide.
- A full spirit-power Venator build: only the trap scales with spirit, so this guide does not cover one.
- Exact damage numbers with items: they depend on boons and item stacks, so only base values are listed.
Frequently asked
What is the best Venator build in Deadlock right now?
For the City Never Sleeps patch, build weapon items. In lane: Restorative Shot, Close Quarters, Intensifying Magazine, Weakening Headshot, Battle Vest, Bullet Lifesteal, Titanic Magazine, Fleetfoot and Spirit Resilience. Mid game: Berserker, Warp Stone, Siphon Bullets, Rapid Recharge and Ballistic Enchantment. Late game: Ricochet, Vampiric Burst and Silencer, with Glass Cannon or Inhibitor as swaps. Every weapon item also powers up his grenade, Gutshot and Ira Domini.
What is Venator's skill order?
Take Gutshot to tier 2 first: it cuts the cooldown to 13 s and raises the wall stun to 1.0 s, long enough for a heavy melee the target can't parry. Then take Ira Domini tiers 1 to 3 (tier 3 blesses all three stakes), then Consecrating Grenade timed with charge items like Rapid Recharge. Leave the Hex-Lined Snap Trap upgrades and Gutshot tier 3 for last unless you play a melee build.
How do you counter Venator in Deadlock?
Shoot his traps: one bullet disarms them, and Graves can destroy them too. Fight away from walls, because Gutshot only stuns within 7 m of a wall. Parry his heavy melee after an early Gutshot, and use Unstoppable or Indomitable against the stun and immobilize. Plated Armor can deflect Ira Domini stakes and disarm stops the ultimate. He only has 1 m/s sprint speed, so fast heroes can kite him.
Does Ira Domini work with Ricochet?
Yes. Since the September 16, 2026 patch, every Ira Domini stake bounces with Ricochet, and Split Shot makes each stake fire 3 bolts. The stakes are hitscan, pierce through enemies, deal 30% critical headshot damage and do not lose damage over distance. The blessed stake executes heroes it leaves under 8% health.
How do you lane as Venator?
Play near walls and corners so Gutshot can stun, and peek from cover because Venator is big and slow. Kick traps behind the cover you fight around so retreating enemies step on them. Buy your first weapon item early, take Restorative Shot against aggressive lanes, and farm Haunts and crates whenever there is nothing to fight, because his whole kit scales with souls spent on gun items.
