🎯 The core idea
Paradox is a pick hero. She roams from mid, catches one enemy with Kinetic Carbine's time-stop and swaps them into her team or into a pulsing grenade. Start with Pulse Grenade and get Slowing Hex early so targets can't dash away. Then choose a lane: Superior Duration and Echo Shard for the bomb build, or weapon items for the Carbine build. Since June, her ultimate comes back more slowly, so make every swap count.
- free costs nothing
- cheap small cost
- setup needs preparation
- grind pays off slowly
- skip the thing to stop doing
How Paradox plays in the October 2026 patch
This Paradox guide uses two videos. The main one is a breakdown by Immajeanyus, an Eternus-rank Paradox player with over 900 games, uploaded on 26 March 2026. We use it for ability fundamentals, combos and item reasoning. The second is a DattoDoesDeadlock match uploaded on 5 October 2026, after City Never Sleeps. It shows Paradox on the reworked map with the Carbine build that Datto calls very popular right now. We checked every number against deadlock.wiki on 19 October 2026.
Paradox sits between a carry and a support. Her damage comes from her gun (Trade Secret, a 5-round burst rifle at about 51 DPS on the wiki), from Kinetic Carbine and from Pulse Grenade. Her job is to create picks: catch one hero out of position, lock them down, and give your carries the space and objectives they need. She needs fewer souls than a hyper carry and falls off later in the game, so she should be using her lead on the map, not hoarding farm.
setup The March video comes before four things that change how she plays. The 30 June update raised every ultimate's cooldown (Paradoxical Swap went from 95 s to 110 s). The 16 September patch cut Carbine's minimum damage and lowered slows globally. The City Never Sleeps update on 29 September reworked the map and turned neutrals into Haunts. Several October hero releases followed. The wiki's Paradox update history lists no changes to her after 16 September. Where the March video's numbers no longer match, we say so below.
Pulse Grenade: your wave clear and zone
Pulse Grenade is a thrown bomb that starts pulsing when it lands. If it hits an enemy hero, trooper, objective or Haunt in mid-air, it starts pulsing right there. Each pulse deals spirit damage, grows the radius and adds a stack of damage amp for Paradox on whoever it hits. On the current wiki it deals 35 damage per pulse (×0.3 spirit scaling), starts at a 5.5 m radius and grows 1 m per pulse. It pulses every 0.8 s for 3.2 s, gives 4% damage amp per stack for 8 s, and has a 32 s cooldown. Stacks have no cap, which is why throwing two grenades with Echo Shard does so much damage.
| Pulse Grenade upgrade | Ability points | Current wiki value |
|---|---|---|
| T1 | 1 | -12 s cooldown (32 s to 20 s) |
| T2 | 2 | +20 pulse damage and higher spirit scaling |
| T3 | 5 | +4% damage amp per stack and +1.6 s duration |
The video says the grenade's 20% "time slow" affects every animation, including dashes, so heroes can't dash out. The wiki disagrees. Its notes say this time slow counts as a movement slow and does not affect dashes. Unstoppable also removes it. Don't count on the bomb alone to hold a mobile target; that's what Slowing Hex and Kinetic Carbine are for. The video's point about T3 still holds: it doubles the amp per stack (4% to 8%) and the extra 1.6 s adds two more pulses at the 0.8 s interval. The grenade deals only 50% damage to objectives, so it clears waves and camps well but won't take towers down for you.
Time Wall: silence, weapon amp and zoning
Time Wall creates a wall that freezes enemy bullets and projectiles that touch it. Your team's bullets that pass through it get faster and hit harder. Enemies who walk through are slowed. The wiki lists a 25 s cooldown, 5.5 s duration, an 8 m × 4 m wall, a 0.5 s time-stop on projectiles, +30% weapon damage and double bullet speed for allies, and a 64% movement slow that lasts 2 s on anyone who crosses it.
| Time Wall upgrade | Ability points | Current wiki value |
|---|---|---|
| T1 | 1 | +3.5 s duration, +3 m width, +1 m height |
| T2 | 2 | Silences enemies for 2.3 s, +35% weapon damage |
| T3 | 5 | +2 ability charges |
The video was right that the silence moved to T2 in March, so you no longer need 5 points to get it. The wall also stopped damaging enemies in that patch. One correction: the video calls the T3 extra charge "only one" and rates it as weak. A 22 May patch raised it to +2 charges and halved the charge delay from 4 s to 2 s, so T3 is now a real upgrade. Stacking walls doesn't stack the damage bonus, because a projectile can only be boosted by one wall.
How to use it: strafe left and right while you place it so incoming fire hits the wall instead of you, then circle around it while you shoot. When someone chases you, put it in a corridor or doorway, not out in the open, so they have to walk through it and get slowed and silenced. It also blocks slow projectiles. The video's examples are Vyper's ultimate and Bebop's hook.
Kinetic Carbine: charge, time-stop and poke
Kinetic Carbine charges a single shot that deals spirit damage, scales with your weapon damage and time-stops the target. It takes 2.5 s to fully charge, after which you can hold it for 3.5 s. The wiki lists a 28 s cooldown, a maximum time-stop of 0.4 s and +25% move speed. That speed bonus only applies once the shot is fully charged. Holding alt-fire while charging in the air slows your own fall, so you can peek and take a better angle.
| Kinetic Carbine upgrade | Ability points | Current wiki value |
|---|---|---|
| T1 | 1 | +0.4 s max time-stop |
| T2 | 2 | -12 s cooldown and more move-speed scaling |
| T3 | 5 | +2 s charge hold and +55% damage scaling |
skip Don't fire it half-charged anymore. The 16 September patch cut its minimum damage multiplier from 25% to 10%, and T3 no longer raises it, so a quick, half-charged shot does very little. Either fire it fully charged or save it.
The video's numbers hold up here. T1 plus T2 gives a 0.8 s time-stop, and Superior Duration's +28% stretches that to about one second, as the video says. Ability duration lengthens both the time-stop and the hold window, but never the 2.5 s charge-up. Two more wiki notes are worth knowing: Plated Armor doesn't block Carbine, and Bullet Evasion doesn't dodge it. Disarm does stop it, though.
Paradoxical Swap: the ultimate that wins picks
Paradoxical Swap fires a projectile that swaps your position with the enemy hero it hits. Once it connects it can't be interrupted, it ignores walls and it works at any distance. The swap takes about 1.25 s, and during it neither you nor the target can act, but you can both still take damage. It deals 150 damage (×1.1 spirit scaling), which lands after the swap ends.
| Paradoxical Swap upgrade | Ability points | Current wiki value |
|---|---|---|
| T1 | 1 | 200 barrier for 8 s (scales with spirit) |
| T2 | 2 | -30 s cooldown and +13 m cast range (25 m to 38 m) |
| T3 | 5 | Also swaps every enemy within 7 m of the target, +10% max-health damage; alt-cast swaps only the target |
Cooldown correction: the video gives a 95 s base cooldown and says T2 brings it back down to 60 s. The 30 June global ultimate change raised the base to 110 s and cut T2 to -30 s, so a T2 swap is now on an 80 s cooldown. You get fewer swaps per game than the video suggests, so don't spend one on a target your team can't follow up. The video is right that range is the big gain at T2. Most players still don't expect how far a T2 swap reaches.
Two edge cases from the wiki: Indomitable and Cloak of Opportunity cleanse the swap (with T3, nearby enemies still get swapped). The swap also doesn't interrupt channeled ultimates such as Dynamo's Singularity. The video adds that you can swap Wraith during her teleport animation to cancel it. The wiki has no note on this, so treat it as the creator's experience, not a guarantee.
Paradox skill order and ability upgrades
The video's skill order still works under current costs (1, 2 and 5 points for T1, T2 and T3). Unlock Pulse Grenade first. It clears half a wave, punishes enemies who melee your troopers, and pushes people out of cover. An early Carbine is easy to see coming, and enemies just hide when they hear it charging.
| Order | Upgrade | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pulse Grenade T1 | 20 s cooldown for wave clear and camps |
| 2–3 | Kinetic Carbine T1, T2 | Early damage is gun plus Carbine; longer time-stop, shorter cooldown |
| 4 | Pulse Grenade T2 | Big jump in bomb damage |
| 5–6 | Paradoxical Swap T1, T2 | 80 s cooldown and 38 m range: more picks |
| 7–8 | Time Wall T1, T2 | The 2.3 s silence, plus weapon amp for structures |
| 9 | Pulse Grenade T3 | Two more pulses and double amp per stack: the bomb build's power spike |
| 10 | Paradoxical Swap T3 | Multi-swap and 10% max-health damage |
| 11 | Time Wall T3 | +2 charges (better than the video rated it) |
| 12 | Kinetic Carbine T3 | Longer hold window and +55% damage scaling |
setup On the Carbine build, put Carbine T3 before Pulse Grenade T3. The +55% damage scaling is where that build's big one-shot comes from. The rest of the order stays the same.
The tooltip in this frame is from the March video. The numbers above are the current wiki values.
Paradox laning and early roaming
Mid is her best lane, and after the map rework mid is Broadway (the blue lane). The wiki notes it has easy access to all four districts, so you can gank either side lane. The video's advice still holds. At around two minutes, if you aren't clearly winning your lane, push your wave, break crates, and look for ganks. You don't need the kill. Leaving an enemy at low health forces them to play far back, which lets your team take free Guardian damage or steal their camps. If you're quick, you can rotate back before the next wave arrives. A few missed creeps are fine, because those souls go to your lane partner, ideally a carry.
In lane, throw Pulse Grenade on the enemy creeps to clear the wave, then use it to push enemies out of cover. If someone runs from the bomb, Carbine them so they stay inside it. Datto's match shows how the new mid looks in practice: his duo found it more exposed to ganks around the new bridge. So keep Time Wall ready for when you need to retreat instead of using it to attack.
Paradox combos and tips
These are the video's combos, adjusted for current numbers:
- Bomb into Carbine for poke at close range. Throw the bomb first because it takes time to land, then Carbine them so they stay inside it longer. When they try to leave, swap them back in.
- Carbine into bomb when landing the Carbine matters more, for example when a teammate will follow up or you plan to swap.
- Wall, Carbine, bomb at long range. The wall's weapon amp boosts Carbine (the wiki confirms ally ability shots that deal weapon damage get the bonus) and makes the bomb fly faster. Don't use the wall this way at close range, because you'll take damage back.
- Carbine, swap, wall, then bomb at their feet or hold the bomb to block their escape. Within about 7 m the wall spawns behind them. To fix that, look straight down and cast wall, then swap so the silence is guaranteed. Wall, Carbine, swap does a little more damage.
- Delay the Carbine until after the swap if you want your team to clean up the target, at the cost of a harder-to-land swap.
free A fully charged Carbine's time-stop is long enough for two burst shots before you swap. If the Carbine isn't fully charged, swap right away or they'll dash out. On low-HP targets, swap them back into your bombs when they try to leave a corner. The video's trick of walling a closet entrance and dropping two bombs at your feet still works if someone chases you into a tight space.
Paradox build by phase: items and costs
This is the video's bomb build checked against current wiki costs. The video bought Slowing Bullets early. That's fine, but it is now a Tier 2 item at 1,600 souls, and the 16 September patch lowered slow values globally.
| Phase | Items (wiki cost) | Role in the build |
|---|---|---|
| Early | Headshot Booster (800), Extra Health (800), Extra Stamina (800), Slowing Hex (1,600) | Gun damage, health, stamina, the key anti-escape item |
| Early–mid | Slowing Bullets (1,600), Healbane (1,600), Arcane Surge (1,600), Duration Extender (1,600) | Stick to targets, cheap anti-heal, bomb damage, longer Carbine |
| Mid | Headhunter (3,200), Fortitude (3,200), Superior Duration (3,200) | Sustain and move speed, regen between fights, duration for everything |
| Spike | Echo Shard (6,400), Mystic Expansion (800) into Greater Expansion (3,200) | Double bomb, more range on every ability |
| Late | Vortex Web (6,400), Spirit Burn (6,400), situational items | Group pull into bombs, burn and anti-heal |
A few corrections from the wiki: Extra Health now gives 210 health, not the "200" the video mentions. Fortitude gives +375 health, health regen once you stop taking damage, and +1.5 m/s move speed above 75% health. Headshot Booster and Headhunter only apply to gun headshots. The wiki says they do not trigger on Kinetic Carbine, so they help your gun, not your burst. Healbane gives -35% healing for 8 s on spirit damage and heals you 275 when an enemy dies under it, and both your bomb and Carbine apply it easily.
Bomb build core: Slowing Hex, Arcane Surge and duration
cheap Slowing Hex (1,600) is the most important early spirit item on Paradox. The wiki lists -16% move speed, -26% dash distance and a silence on movement abilities and items for 3.5 s, at 25 m range. That is the difference between people walking out of your combo and dying to it. It's worth buying before your vitality items, and it builds into Vortex Web later.
Arcane Surge (1,600): after a dash-jump, your next ability gets +12% range, +15% duration and +20 spirit power for 7 s. The video says this adds 16 damage per tick to the bomb. That matches the +20 spirit power times the grenade's T2 spirit scaling. Dash-jump while charging Carbine, throw the boosted bomb, then Carbine them so they stay inside it. If you prefer movement, Stamina Mastery is a reasonable swap.
Duration Extender (1,600, +22% duration on the imbued ability) goes on Kinetic Carbine, not the bomb. The video's logic is right: a longer time-stop and hold window matter more than one more pulse. Superior Duration (3,200, +28% to all abilities and items) then stretches nearly everything you have: bomb pulses, wall and silence, Carbine time-stop, swap barrier, and the length of Slowing Hex, Slowing Bullets and Healbane. Slowing Bullets' 3.5 s slow becomes about 4.5 s, a little under the "nearly five seconds" in the video.
Paradox Kinetic Carbine build (weapon damage)
setup The other popular build right now goes all in on Kinetic Carbine. Datto uses it in his October match on the new map and says it lets you hit someone for about 1,500 damage every few seconds, as long as you land the shot. Use that number as his estimate, not a promise. The reason the build works is in the wiki's Carbine item notes:
- Weapon damage items boost Carbine. Spirit power does not. Conditional weapon bonuses apply if their condition is true at the moment you fire.
- Spirit resist shred increases Carbine damage. Bullet resist shred does not, because the shot deals spirit damage.
- Effects that do trigger on Carbine: Restorative Shot, Mystic Shot, Weakening Headshot and Crippling Headshot, and Hollow Point's bullet resist debuff.
- Effects that don't: Headshot Booster, Headhunter, Spirit Shredder Bullets, Toxic Bullets and other build-up items, Tesla Bullets, Lucky Shot, Ricochet and Siphon Bullets.
- Items that trigger on spirit damage (Spirit Burn, Tankbuster, Mystic Slow) can all go off from a single Carbine shot.
So a Carbine build looks like this: weapon damage first (Restorative Shot, Mystic Shot, Opening Rounds), Weakening Headshot into Crippling Headshot for resist shred, Duration Extender imbued on Carbine, then Spirit Burn or Escalating Exposure late. Keep Slowing Hex anyway, because the time-stop is short and Carbine has a long cooldown, so you need another way to hold the target. Carbine T2 also adds move-speed scaling, which is why Datto says it "makes you go super fast" when roaming.
Paradox late game build and 6,400-soul options
grind Echo Shard (6,400) is the bomb build's biggest power spike. It resets the imbued non-ultimate ability, and its own cooldown grows by that ability's cooldown. Because stacks have no cap, two grenades on one target roughly doubles your damage and zone control, and lets you clear Tier 3 camps quickly. After that, the video buys Mystic Expansion, Vortex Web and Greater Expansion. Vortex Web (6,400) pulls enemies into a small area and applies Slowing Hex. Greater Expansion (+30% range) makes your bombs, wall and swap range bigger, including the 7 m multi-swap radius.
For damage items, the video tested four at 6,400 souls:
| Item | Current wiki effect | Video's verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Spirit Burn | Over 500 spirit damage within 5 s causes an explosion and a burn with -70% healing for 8 s | Best overall |
| Escalating Exposure | -8% spirit resist on spirit damage, plus up to 12 stacks of 4.5% amp to your own spirit damage | Second best |
| Mystic Reverb | Imbue: lifesteal, -32% move slow and a delayed 50% damage echo in a 16 m radius | Less damage, huge slow |
| Boundless Spirit | +15% spirit power, +30 spirit power, +75 health | Worst of the four |
Two corrections. The auto-captions call the third item "Mystic Reaver"; on the wiki it's Mystic Reverb. The video says Escalating Exposure amps your whole team's spirit damage. The wiki says its stacking amp only boosts your own spirit damage; your team benefits from the -8% spirit resist shred.
Situational picks from the video, checked on the wiki: Diviner's Kevlar (6,400) gives a 1,000 barrier and +40 spirit power every time you cast your ultimate. That buff lasts 20 s, not the 30 s the video says. Infuser gives +70% spirit lifesteal and +30 spirit power for 7 s. Transcendent Cooldown (+25% ability and item cooldown reduction) gives you more uptime on bombs and Echo Shard. Crippling Headshot and Cursed Relic (the video calls it "Curse") are good when you're behind on souls. For an assassin style, Majestic Leap and Arctic Blast let you drop straight into a bomb combo. The video's author calls this setup gimmicky and says it only works when you're far ahead.
Mid-Boss, Unstable Rift and teamfights
The video's best teamfight tip is the Mid-Boss pit. After the Mid-Boss dies, the wiki says a Rejuvenator crystal takes 6 s to drop into the pit. Once it lands, players claim it with heavy melee: up to 3 credits, and the first one also fully heals the hero who took it. Either team can steal it. Put Time Wall where the crystal will land, back off, and throw two bombs into the pit as it touches down. With T3 swap, a Vortex Web, then swap, then wall combo can pull several enemies to your side of the pit.
The Unstable Rift is newer than the video, added on 30 June. Its 20 m capture point on a side-lane bridge works the same way: it's a small area enemies have to stand in. The first Rift spawns between 10 and 12 minutes and respawns about every 7 minutes. Datto's team fights over the Rift before heading mid in his October match. In fights, your job is to catch a target with Slowing Hex and Carbine, swap them into your team, and keep the rest away with bombs and wall. Fight in chokepoints near structures, where your grenade covers the whole path.
Paradox counters and how to beat her
If you're playing against Paradox, these come from the wiki's interaction notes:
- Unstoppable removes the grenade's slow, Carbine's time-stop and the wall's silence. Indomitable and Cloak of Opportunity cleanse the swap itself.
- Debuff resist shortens the grenade amp, Carbine time-stop and wall silence. Reactive Barrier triggers on the swap and on the T2 wall silence.
- Disarm (for example Cursed Relic) blocks Carbine. Plated Armor and Bullet Evasion don't.
- Spirit resist (Spirit Resilience, Spellbreaker) reduces nearly all her damage, including Carbine.
- Don't fight inside her bombs. Step out before the later pulses, because the damage amp keeps stacking for 8 s.
If you're playing Paradox, the video's counter-building advice still applies. Against high-sustain heroes like Abrams, Mo & Krill, Silver, Dynamo or Lady Geist, buy Toxic Bullets or Decay early for anti-heal. Against heavy spirit damage or abilities you can parry, such as those from Lash, Pocket, Bebop, Yamato or Shiv, buy Spirit Resilience or Counterspell. Spellbreaker helps against several burst-spirit heroes. Divine Barrier is the video's specific answer to Pocket. On where she sits on any Deadlock Paradox tier list: we don't rank her here, because the wiki doesn't publish tier rankings and pick rates change with each patch.
How this guide was fact-checked
- From deadlock.wiki (19 October 2026): every Paradox ability value and upgrade, the Paradox update history (last change 16 September 2026), item costs and effects, the Kinetic Carbine item-interaction list, the Mid-Boss and Rejuvenator rules, the Unstable Rift timings and the map layout after City Never Sleeps.
- From the March video's own footage and testing: the skill order, the combos, the build order, the Wraith teleport cancel, and the ranking of the four 6,400-soul damage items.
- From Datto's October match: that the Carbine build is popular after City Never Sleeps, his estimate of about 1,500 damage per shot, and how mid and the Rift play on the new map. His scoreboard item icons were too small to read reliably, so we don't list his exact items.
- Corrections to the March video: the swap cooldown is 110 s (80 s at T2), not 95 s and 60 s. Time Wall T3 is +2 charges, not +1. The grenade's time slow does not affect dashes. Carbine's minimum damage was cut on 16 September. Extra Health gives 210 health, not 200. Diviner's Kevlar's buff lasts 20 s, not 30 s. The item is Mystic Reverb, not "Mystic Reaver". Escalating Exposure's amp is personal, not team-wide. Slowing Bullets is now Tier 2. Headshot Booster and Headhunter don't trigger on Carbine. The video's frames show old tooltip numbers, so use the tables above instead.
What this guide doesn't answer
- Exact soul timings for each item. These depend on lane and game state, and neither video gives repeatable timings.
- Matchup-by-matchup laning. The wiki has no matchup data, and one replay isn't enough to judge.
- Datto's exact Carbine item list. His scoreboard icons weren't readable, so the Carbine build above comes from wiki interactions, not a copied list.
- Street Brawl. The wiki lists a 15% smaller grenade there, but that mode has its own item draft and is out of scope.
- A tier placement. Pick rates and win rates change with each patch, and we have no trustworthy source for them.
Frequently asked
What is the best Paradox build in Deadlock right now?
There are two good options in October 2026. The bomb build goes Slowing Hex, Arcane Surge, Duration Extender imbued on Kinetic Carbine, then Superior Duration and Echo Shard so you can throw two Pulse Grenades. The Carbine build buys weapon damage items, Weakening Headshot into Crippling Headshot and Duration Extender on Carbine, because Carbine scales with weapon damage, not spirit power. Both builds should buy Slowing Hex early.
What is the Paradox skill order in Deadlock?
Unlock Pulse Grenade first. Then take Grenade T1, Kinetic Carbine T1 and T2, Grenade T2, Paradoxical Swap T1 and T2, Time Wall T1 and T2 (for the 2.3 s silence), Grenade T3, Swap T3, Wall T3 and Carbine T3 last. On the Carbine build, take Carbine T3 before Grenade T3 for its +55% damage scaling.
What is Paradoxical Swap's cooldown after the ultimate changes?
On the current wiki, Paradoxical Swap has a 110 s base cooldown, up from 95 s after the 30 June 2026 global ultimate change. T2 now takes off 30 s, not 35 s, so a T2 swap has an 80 s cooldown and 38 m range. Older guides that say 60 s are out of date.
What is the best Paradox combo?
Kinetic Carbine into Paradoxical Swap into Time Wall is the main pick combo. Then throw Pulse Grenade at their feet or hold it to block their escape. At close range, look down to place the wall first so the silence is guaranteed. For poke, throw the grenade first and Carbine the target so they stay inside it. A fully charged Carbine's time-stop lasts long enough for two burst shots before you swap.
How do you counter Paradox in Deadlock?
Unstoppable removes her grenade slow, Carbine time-stop and wall silence. Indomitable and Cloak of Opportunity cleanse Paradoxical Swap. Debuff resist shortens her effects, Reactive Barrier triggers on the swap and silence, Disarm blocks Kinetic Carbine, and spirit resist items like Spirit Resilience or Spellbreaker reduce most of her damage. Get out of her Pulse Grenade early, because its damage amp keeps stacking.
