🎯 The core idea
McGinnis is a late-game anchor, not a chaser. On the City Never Sleeps map she wins by holding Broadway (the middle lane), spreading Mini Turrets where enemies must walk, and scaling into a spirit-heavy build built on turret charges, range and duration. Push two waves before every fight, keep turrets in reserve, and let Heavy Barrage finish what the turrets started.
- free costs nothing
- cheap small cost
- setup needs preparation
- grind pays off slowly
- skip the thing to stop doing
Why McGinnis is a late-game anchor
McGinnis is listed on the deadlock.wiki as an Inventor with Support and Disruption tags: a machine-gun hero whose real damage comes from summons, zone control and one huge ultimate. The source video is a match from hello Tomi played on 30 September 2026, the day after the City Never Sleeps update, and its end screen makes the point better than any tier list: 77k souls, 7 kills, 3 deaths, 16 assists and 122k player damage in a 50-minute win, while every teammate sat between 25k and 47k.
That is how to play McGinnis in Deadlock right now. You are not the hero who runs across the map to finish a kill. You hold a lane, farm, place turrets where enemies have to walk, and become the team's biggest damage source once your spirit items come online. If you start chasing, you lose both the farm and the lane.
Mini Turret: your main damage tool
Mini Turret is the ability your whole McGinnis build revolves around. Per the wiki, you place a turret up to 20m away. It has 100 health (+9 per boon), 24 spirit DPS (+0.42 per point of spirit power), a 30m attack range and a 35s lifetime, on an 18s cooldown with one base charge.
Details that change how you use it:
- Turrets deal only 50% damage to troopers and Haunts and 30% to objectives. They are hero-killers and area deniers, not wave clear.
- A new turret locks onto the nearest enemy hero in sight. When you shoot a hero, every turret that can see them swaps to that target, so tag the enemy you want dead with your gun first.
- Turrets take full weapon damage from any distance (falloff doesn't protect them) and give the killer 40 souls plus 4 per minute. Don't leave them in the open for free farm.
- Since the 12 August 2026 patch, turrets no longer shoot heroes on ziplines and lost their old 80% decaying resist for the first 6 seconds. Their health went up from 90 to 100 base to make up for it.
The three Mini Turret ability upgrades are +10 DPS and +10m range (1 point), +2 charges (2 points), and +25% fire rate with +12s lifetime (5 points).
Medicinal Specter: healing that wins trades
Medicinal Specter drops a spirit that heals nearby allies. Per the wiki: 15m cast range, 6m heal radius, 25 health regen per second (+0.3 per spirit power), 6.5s duration and a 50s cooldown. Healing doesn't stack if two Specters cover the same spot, and the buff lingers for 1 second after you step out.
The August 2026 patch moved its upgrades around. They are now +1.5s duration (1 point), -20s cooldown plus +100% stamina recovery (2 points), and +2% max HP regen, +3m radius and +40% spirit resist (5 points). Drop it behind cover during a lane trade or a siege, not in the open where a single grenade forces your team out of it. In the video's late game the Specter sits behind Tomi while she shoots into a fight at the York end of the map, which keeps her healthy enough to stay in range without any vitality items.
Spectral Wall: split the fight
Spectral Wall travels out up to 50m. Enemies it passes through take a 16% slow for 2.5s, and when it erupts it deals 60 damage (+0.731 per spirit power) and splits the terrain for 6s. Press Fire or the ability key again to erupt it early. The cooldown is 50s. Each wall segment has 200 health and can be broken by melee from either team: a light melee does 50, a heavy melee 100.
Use the wall to cut a fight in half, not as a pure damage spell. Erupt it between an enemy and their escape route and your turrets get a few free seconds of shooting. The upgrades are worth knowing: the 1-point tier amplifies your damage by +20% on hit enemies for 7s, the 2-point tier gives -20s cooldown and +2s duration, and the 5-point tier deploys 2 Mini Turrets near the wall for 8s and adds +24% slow.
Heavy Barrage: the ultimate
Heavy Barrage fires a stream of homing rockets at a target area within 36m. Per the wiki it fires 6 rockets per second for 8s, each rocket dealing 21 damage (+0.2 per spirit power) in a 4.5m radius. The minimum range is 8.5m and the cooldown is 200s. Rockets deal 50% damage to objectives. While you channel it you are slowed (from 6.8m/s to about 4.2m/s), but you can still use stamina to dash.
The ultimate cooldown went from 175s to 200s in the 30 June 2026 global ultimate change, and its rocket DPS was cut from 22.5 to 21 in June. Its upgrades: a 24% movement and dash slow for 1s (1 point), -45s cooldown and +6s duration (2 points), and +2m radius plus +15 damage per rocket with better spirit scaling (5 points). Fire it from behind your turrets at a group that is already fighting or sieging. That way the enemies have to choose between walking out of the rockets and running into your turrets.
Skill order and ability upgrades
The video doesn't give an exact point order, but it is clear about what matters: turret range early, then charges, then duration. This order follows that advice and the wiki's upgrade costs.
| Priority | Upgrade | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Mini Turret 1 (+10 DPS, +10m range) | Range is the strongest early stat on the new map |
| 2 | Mini Turret 2 (+2 charges) | Three turrets at once is your laning and defense power spike |
| 3 | Spectral Wall 1 (+20% damage amp) | Cheap, and it multiplies the turret damage you already have |
| 4 | Heavy Barrage 2 (-45s cooldown, +6s duration) | Turns a 200s ult into one you use in most big fights |
| 5 | Mini Turret 3 (+25% fire rate, +12s lifetime) | Longer-lived turrets match the duration-heavy item build |
| 6 | Medicinal Specter 2, then the remaining tiers | Fill out by preference; take Wall 2 if you lean on walls |
Boons hand you ability points through the match (the frame shows "Ability Point" on a boon popup), so spend them as soon as you get them. An unspent point is turret damage you're giving away.
Laning: take the middle
On the City Never Sleeps map the video picks Broadway, the blue middle lane, as McGinnis' best lane. The wiki describes Broadway as the shortest and most direct route to the enemy base, with easy access to all four districts and the Mid-Boss below it, so a hero built to hold ground fits it well.
free Laning tips for McGinnis:
- Last-hit with the gun. Services Rendered spins up over 2 seconds from 4.76 to 11.9 bullets per second (per the wiki), so hold fire on the wave for a moment rather than tapping.
- Throw a turret when the enemy laner commits to a trade, not onto the trooper wave. Turrets do half damage to troopers but full damage to heroes.
- Keep one turret charge for an enemy roaming in from a side street. The new map has many corners and covered approaches, which the video calls out as the reason McGinnis gets jumped.
- cheap Monster Rounds (800 souls) is an early option. The wiki notes that summons are affected by it, so it helps your turrets against troopers as well as your gun.
Turret placement on the City Never Sleeps map
The 29 September 2026 City Never Sleeps update reworked the map, renamed neutral creeps to Haunts, and added new breakables and permanent buffs. The video's main point about the new layout is that objectives and fights are spread further apart, with lots of cover between them. That makes Mini Turret range and lifetime worth more than they were on the old map.
setup Placement rules that follow from that:
- Put turrets behind your Guardian or Walker when the enemy pressures your lane, so attackers have to walk into them.
- Place turrets on corners an enemy must round to reach you, not in the middle of the street where a diving Shiv sees them first.
- Hide the Medicinal Specter next to your turrets so you can stand inside both zones.
- Pre-place turrets on the lane an enemy push is coming from. The video's tip is that a McGinnis who knows where enemies are going places turrets first and fights second.
McGinnis items and build by phase
The video's build has no green (vitality) items at all. Tomi's argument is that McGinnis needs damage, turret uptime and sustain from spirit items, not raw resist. In particular she uses Mystic Reverb for survivability. The table below is a current Deadlock McGinnis build that follows that logic, with costs from the wiki.
| Phase | Items (cost) | What they do for McGinnis |
|---|---|---|
| Early (0-10 min) | Extra Charge (800), Mystic Expansion (800) on Mini Turret, Extra Spirit (800), Monster Rounds (800) | +1 turret charge, +20% range, flat spirit, better trooper and Haunt farm |
| Mid (10-25 min) | Duration Extender (1,600) on Mini Turret, Mystic Vulnerability (1,600), Improved Spirit (1,600), Enduring Speed (1,600), Rapid Recharge (3,200) | Longer turret life, -8% enemy spirit resist, +2 charges and faster recharge, slow resist for the Barrage channel |
| Late (25+ min) | Superior Duration (3,200), Greater Expansion (3,200), Escalating Exposure (6,400), Spirit Burn (6,400), Mystic Reverb (6,400) | Max turret uptime and range, stacking spirit amp, burst explosions and lifesteal |
Notes on the picks:
- Charges and duration first. The video recommends ability recharge items early and duration items once your core is in place. Duration Extender (+22% duration) and Superior Duration (+28%) keep turrets up long enough to cover a whole fight.
- Escalating Exposure applies a stacking +4.5% spirit amp (up to 12 stacks) whenever you deal spirit damage. The video points out that turrets shooting non-stop stack it very quickly.
- Enduring Speed is the one defensive item we'd add. The wiki notes that slow resist reduces the self-slow while you channel Heavy Barrage.
- grind The late-game build is expensive (three Tier 4 items at 6,400 each). That's why the video insists you farm and scale instead of chasing kills.
Corrupted items: what the video shows that's gone now
skip The video opens by showing Corrupted items from a special shop, and Tomi's HUD shows a big weapon damage penalty (the video says about -60%; the frame here shows -50%). That shop was the Broker. According to the deadlock.wiki, he was in Standard and Ranked only from 29 September to 2 October 2026. A later undocumented change on 4 October also took corrupted items out of Street Brawl. The video was recorded in that window. As of October 2026 you can't buy corrupted items in a normal match, so treat that part as history, not a build step.
The rest of the video's advice holds up: lane choice, turret placement, building for range and duration, and the push-then-fight timing. The wiki's McGinnis update history lists no changes to her after 12 August 2026, and neither the 5 October nor the 14 October 2026 balance patch touches her abilities.
Mid game: push two waves, then fight
The video's clearest macro rule: in the mid game, push two waves into the enemy before you go to any fight. If the enemy team groups up to fight while your waves are hitting their structures, they lose Walker health and trooper souls. Then you join the fight with turrets ready.
- Keep the middle pushed so your zipline reaches further than theirs.
- Save at least one turret charge when you walk to a fight. Turret count management decides whether you can defend your lane afterwards.
- Against a 3v1 push on mid, the video's advice is to stand behind your Guardian with turrets around you and hold. You won't win every 4v1, but you buy your team time to take objectives elsewhere.
Teamfights and defending the base
In teamfights McGinnis plays from the backline, never the front. Spread turrets on the flanks of the fight, shoot the target you want focused so every turret swaps to it, and erupt the wall to split the enemy team. Then cast Heavy Barrage on whoever is stuck on your side.
Base defense is where she pulls ahead. The video describes holding the base against a team with roughly 50k more souls: if the attackers don't find and kill the turrets, the turrets keep chipping their health while your team fights. In the same match the frame above shows a large enemy ultimate going off right next to Tomi, a reminder that positioning still matters when you are the main damage source.
McGinnis counters and how to beat her
If you're the one facing McGinnis, these are the counters the wiki numbers support:
- Shoot the turrets. They take full weapon damage at any range, have 100 health plus 9 per boon, and give 40 souls each plus 4 per minute. Quick-firing weapon heroes delete them.
- Dive the backline. Mobile heroes like Shiv, whom the video names, can reach McGinnis through the new map's corners. She has no built-in escape, and she is heavily slowed while channeling Heavy Barrage.
- Break the wall. Wall segments have 200 health, so two heavy melees open a gap.
- Healbane and debuff resist. Healing reduction cuts Medicinal Specter, and Debuff Reducer shortens the wall and Barrage slows.
- Use ziplines. Since August 2026, turrets no longer shoot heroes on ziplines, so rotating by zipline gets past a turret zone safely.
How this guide was fact-checked
- All ability numbers (ranges, damage, scaling, cooldowns, durations, upgrade tiers and costs) come from the McGinnis page on deadlock.wiki as of 19 October 2026, including its update history (12 August, 30 June and 11 June 2026 changes).
- Item costs and effects (Extra Charge, Mystic Expansion, Extra Spirit, Monster Rounds, Duration Extender, Mystic Vulnerability, Improved Spirit, Enduring Speed, Rapid Recharge, Superior Duration, Greater Expansion, Escalating Exposure, Spirit Burn, Mystic Reverb) come from each item's wiki page.
- The map facts (three lanes, Broadway as the middle lane) come from the wiki's Map page. The City Never Sleeps contents and the 5 and 14 October balance patches come from the wiki's Updates list.
- Correction: the video presents Corrupted items as part of the current build. The wiki says the Broker shop only ran from 29 September to 2 October 2026, so that section is marked as no longer available.
- Correction: the video says the weapon damage penalty was about -60%. The frame used in this guide shows -50% on the HUD at that point in the match.
- Lane choice, the push-two-waves rule, the no-vitality-items approach and the placement advice come from the video's commentary. The scoreboard figures (77k souls, 122k player damage) are read from the video's end screen.
- The skill order table is our recommendation built from the video's stated priorities and the wiki's upgrade tiers. The video itself doesn't show a point-by-point order.
What this guide doesn't answer
- Where McGinnis sits on a tier list. There is no official tier list, and a tier placement from one match would be guesswork.
- Matchup-by-matchup lane advice. The video covers one match, and lanes shift with every new hero, and several were released in October 2026 alone.
- Gun-focused McGinnis builds. This guide follows the spirit and turret build the video plays. A weapon build is a different guide.
- Street Brawl. McGinnis has different ability values in that mode (for example a 26s Mini Turret cooldown), which are out of scope here.
- The promised item rework. The video mentions an upcoming item rework from the developers. It hasn't happened as of this writing, so nothing here accounts for it.
Frequently asked
What is the best McGinnis build in Deadlock right now?
A spirit build around Mini Turret. Start with Extra Charge, Mystic Expansion on the turret, Extra Spirit and Monster Rounds (800 souls each). Add Duration Extender, Mystic Vulnerability, Improved Spirit, Enduring Speed and Rapid Recharge in the mid game, then finish with Superior Duration, Greater Expansion, Escalating Exposure, Spirit Burn and Mystic Reverb.
What lane should McGinnis play on the City Never Sleeps map?
Broadway, the blue middle lane. It is the shortest route to the enemy base and sits above the Mid-Boss. McGinnis can hold it with turrets placed behind her Guardian while her team plays the side lanes, then push two waves before she joins any fight.
What is the McGinnis skill order?
Take Mini Turret's first upgrade (+10 DPS, +10m range) first, then its second (+2 charges). After that take Spectral Wall's +20% damage amp, Heavy Barrage's -45s cooldown and +6s duration, and Mini Turret's third upgrade (+25% fire rate, +12s lifetime). Fill the rest by preference.
How do you counter McGinnis in Deadlock?
Shoot her turrets: they take full weapon damage at any range, have 100 health plus 9 per boon, and are worth 40 souls plus 4 per minute. Dive her backline, since she has no escape and is slowed while channeling Heavy Barrage. Break her wall with two heavy melees, and use Healbane against Medicinal Specter.
Can you still buy corrupted items for McGinnis?
No. The Broker's corrupted-item shop was only in Standard and Ranked from 29 September to 2 October 2026, according to the Deadlock wiki. Older City Never Sleeps videos show corrupted items in McGinnis builds, but as of October 2026 you build her from the normal shop.
