🎯 The core idea
Kelvin is a slow-and-sustain spirit hero: Arctic Beam and Frost Grenade slow and chip, Ice Path moves you and your team, and Frozen Shelter traps one target with you while you heal. This Deadlock Kelvin guide turns SwoleBenji's farm-first "anti-carry" build into a current, wiki-checked plan: max Arctic Beam, farm to Magic Carpet, then lock the enemy carry in a dome with Decay and Scourge.
- free costs nothing
- cheap small cost
- setup needs preparation
- grind pays off slowly
- skip the thing to stop doing
What Kelvin does in the City Never Sleeps patch
Kelvin is listed on the official wiki as an undead scientist whose kit slows enemies and heals allies. He has 880 base health (+60 per boon), 6.7 m/s move speed and a medium-range projectile gun, Expedition's End, at about 71 damage per second. He is a big target with a weak early brawl, so his strength comes from spirit damage, slows and very large healing rather than from his gun.
The source video, SwoleBenji's "Fast Farm Max Move Speed Anti Carry" build (uploaded 25 August 2026), plays Kelvin as a farmer for the first 30 minutes and then as a hunter: find the enemy's best carry when they are alone, drop Frozen Shelter on top of both of you, and melt them inside it. That is the build this guide covers. It is not a pure Kelvin support build, but Frost Grenade and the dome still heal teammates every fight, so it works in a support slot too.
The video predates the 16 September balance patch and the 29 September 2026 City Never Sleeps map rework. Kelvin's abilities have barely changed since then (one buff, below), but four of the build's items have, and the map advice needs updating. Every changed number is called out where it matters.
Frost Grenade and Arctic Beam: Kelvin's damage tools
These are the two Kelvin abilities you use every few seconds. Numbers are from the deadlock.wiki Kelvin page as of 19 October 2026.
| Ability | What it does (base) | T1 | T2 | T3 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Frost Grenade | 2 charges, 30s cooldown, 6.5m cloud. Deals 60 spirit damage (+0.6 per spirit power), heals allies 60 (+0.8 per spirit power), slows enemies 32% for 4s | +30 damage and +30 heal | -10s cooldown, debuff also freezes stamina regen | +2m radius, higher damage and heal scaling |
| Arctic Beam | 5s channel, 28s cooldown, 25m beam. 45 DPS (+0.38 per spirit power); builds to -16% move speed and -20% fire rate over 2s | an extra -20% fire rate and move speed | +20 DPS, higher scaling | -13s cooldown, fires 2 extra beams at targets within 10m of the last one hit |
free Frost Grenade is your heal, your slow and your wave clear in one button. In lane, throw it so the cloud covers both your partner and the enemy: one cast trades damage and heals at the same time. The grenade also lands on Ice Path, so you can throw it at your own trail.
Arctic Beam is the core of the build. Hold it on one target and the slow keeps getting stronger; the wiki notes you can throw Frost Grenade and use items while you beam. You move more slowly while beaming, so start it from cover or from Ice Path, not in the open. Once you have the T3 upgrade, the beam splits to two more targets, so it clears whole Haunt camps and trooper waves.
Ice Path and Frozen Shelter: moving, saving and trapping
setup Ice Path makes a floating trail for 8 seconds (50s cooldown) that gives you and nearby allies +2 m/s move speed and +2 m/s sprint speed. Kelvin also gets 60% slow resist while it lasts. The trail stays for 18 seconds and enemies can use it too. Press dash or crouch to raise or lower it, and press the ability button again to cancel it.
Kelvin Ice Path upgrades:
- T1: +2 m/s move speed and +35% bullet resist for Kelvin while on the path.
- T2: -25s cooldown.
- T3: +35% spirit power and +20 spirit power for Kelvin while on the path.
Kelvin's Frozen Shelter (his ultimate, 185s cooldown) makes a dome 8m wide for 5 seconds, cast on yourself or on another hero up to 10m away. Allies inside regenerate 90 health per second, enemies inside are slowed 28%, and any objective under it can't be damaged. Since 16 September 2026 the base regen also scales with spirit power (0.2 per point), which helps this spirit-heavy build. Upgrades: T1 -20s cooldown, T2 +1.5s duration, T3 purges non-ultimate debuffs from you and your allies and adds +65 health regen.
The wiki lists the exceptions: some area abilities and Armor Piercing Rounds bullets go through the dome wall, and so does Venator's Ira Domini. It also notes that the Soul Urn's timer pauses while it is under the dome.
Kelvin skill order and ability upgrades
The video's Kelvin skill order is simple, and the build screen above shows the same point plan:
- Unlock order: Frost Grenade, then Arctic Beam, then Ice Path, then Frozen Shelter.
- Upgrade order: max Arctic Beam first, then Frost Grenade, then Ice Path, then Frozen Shelter last.
grind The video's first target is boon level 11, the point where it has maxed Arctic Beam and the T3 split beam comes online. Before that, play safe and farm. After it, you can clear jungle and push waves quickly. Frozen Shelter's upgrades come last because its 185s cooldown means you only cast it once or twice per fight. If your team needs a heal more than damage, you can put points into Frost Grenade earlier; the video's order is built for farming.
Golden Goose Egg: buy at 800, hold until 30 minutes
grind The build opens with Golden Goose Egg (800 souls). Its value starts at 400 souls and grows while you carry it. When you use it ("hatch" it), you get its value in souls plus one permanent random buff for every 80 souls it has earned. The buffs get stronger at 10 and 30 minutes, so the video says to buy the Egg as soon as you have 800 souls, even if you have to leave a winning lane, and to bind it to a key you won't press by accident.
What changed since the video. The tooltip in this frame shows the Egg before the 16 September patch: 90 souls a minute and a -10% damage penalty. The wiki now lists 80 souls a minute and a -15% damage penalty while you carry it. Because of that, the video's target of eating the Egg "at about 3,200 souls, around 32 minutes" no longer holds. At 80 a minute it takes about 35 minutes of holding to reach 3,200. Hatch it once the game clock passes 30 minutes for the top buff tier, or earlier if you need the item slot or the fight is going badly.
The video also says the Egg is worth about 500 HP on average. The wiki's buff table doesn't support that: health is about 2 in 10 of the buffs, at +30 each in the 30+ minute tier. An Egg held for 30 minutes gives about 30 buffs, so roughly 180 health plus small amounts of fire rate, ammo, weapon damage, spirit power and resists. It's still worth buying, but expect less than the video says.
Kelvin items: the full anti-carry build by phase
This is the full Kelvin item list from the video's build screen (build ID 778993; search "swole" in the public build browser). Costs are from the wiki. The build screen's own notes say to put Duration Extender on Arctic Beam and Compress Cooldown on Ice Path, and to sell Mystic Slow for Unstoppable late.
| Phase | Items in buy order | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Lane, 5–12 min | Golden Goose Egg (800), Extra Spirit (800), Mystic Regeneration (800), Duration Extender (1,600) on Arctic Beam, Mystic Slow (1,600), Improved Spirit (1,600), Superior Duration (3,200), Mystic Vulnerability (1,600) | Longer beam, more grenade damage and heal, sustain in lane, and an extra -24% slow when you deal spirit damage |
| Roam / jungle, 26–32 min | Sprint Boots (800), Enduring Speed (1,600), Escalating Exposure (6,400), Radiant Regeneration (3,200), Extra Regen (800), Healing Booster (1,600), Healing Tempo (6,400), Magic Carpet (6,400), Compress Cooldown (1,600) on Ice Path, Superior Cooldown (3,200), Transcendent Cooldown (6,400) | Speed, stacking spirit amp for clearing Haunts that get tougher over time, heal on every cast, and fast map movement |
| Late game, 35–40 min | Boundless Spirit (6,400), Spirit Burn (6,400), Decay (3,200), Scourge (6,400), then Unstoppable (6,400) and Juggernaut (6,400) as swaps | The damage-over-time and percentage-health damage that kills tanks inside the dome |
Several of these are upgrades of earlier items, so you don't keep both. Escalating Exposure builds from Mystic Vulnerability, Enduring Speed from Sprint Boots, Radiant Regeneration from Mystic Regeneration, Healing Tempo from Healing Booster, Boundless Spirit from Improved Spirit, and Juggernaut from Enduring Speed.
Two items in this Kelvin late game build are weaker than when the video was made. Radiant Regeneration had its heal per boon cut from 2 to 1.7 on 16 September and its spirit scaling cut from 0.04 to 0.035 on 14 October 2026. Decay lost 25% DPS and gained 20% duration on 16 September. Neither change breaks the build, but the video's damage and healing tests were filmed before them. As of 19 October 2026, this is the closest thing to a Kelvin build for October 2026 that we could check against the wiki; no captioned post-rework Kelvin guide was available to compare against.
Kelvin laning: play the trade, not the kill
free Kelvin's laning plan in the video is calm: last-hit, deny, and keep your partner healthy with Frost Grenade whenever a charge is ready. Kelvin is a large target and a weak early brawler, so don't take long trades until you have Mystic Regeneration and Duration Extender. Short trades work well: hold Arctic Beam on an enemy who stepped up, then grenade both of them as they back off.
Kelvin laning tips the video demonstrates:
- When an Infernus has Afterburn on you, stand behind cover rather than chase into the fire.
- Use Arctic Beam to deny troopers; the wiki confirms the beam can claim souls.
- If you get dived under your tower, Ice Path upward, then use Frozen Shelter on yourself. The dome heals you and gives your stamina and cooldowns time to come back.
- skip Don't follow a teammate who keeps over-extending. Heal them from behind, but don't die with them.
Farming the reworked map
grind After boon 11 the video's whole mid-game is farming. Its order of priority is: an empty solo lane first, then Sinner's Sacrifice machines, then jungle camps and crates, then a shared lane, and only then ganks. Follow the souls, not the team fight.
The map in the video is the old one. After the City Never Sleeps rework (29 September 2026), the same plan still works, but the details are different:
- Neutral camps are now called Haunts. Their health rises 2.1% per minute, which is why the video buys Escalating Exposure to keep clearing quickly.
- Sinner's Sacrifice machines still first appear at 8 minutes, which matches the video's "take them at 8 minutes" habit. After the rework they give a bonus at varying times, and they can also drop spirit resist, ability range, bullet resist or move speed buffs.
- New Tough Crates need a heavy melee to open, and Steam Vents give invisibility and regen while you stand on them. Both are new places to farm or reset between camps. Learn the new camp spots before copying the video's routes.
The video's creator also says he skips Rift, Soul Urn and Mid-Boss as a solo-queue player, quoting a 17% success rate from his own spreadsheet. That figure comes from him and nobody can check it. If your team is grouped and has the numbers, doing objectives with them is usually correct.
Ice Path into Magic Carpet: the movement trick
setup Magic Carpet (6,400) is what turns this build into a map-wide hunter. Its active summons a carpet for 12 seconds with +7 m/s fly speed and immunity to slows. The video starts Ice Path first and then rides the carpet, stacking both speed bonuses to cross the map at about 20–21 m/s out of combat (the video's own on-screen reading). This is how you get from a farm spot to a fight, or to a lone carry.
Correction: the video says you can keep firing Arctic Beam from the carpet at about 13 m/s. The wiki says casting an ability, using an item, shooting or air-dashing all dismiss the carpet right away, and the video itself notices that beaming while flying slows it down. Use the carpet to get into position, not as a platform to shoot from. The wiki also notes that you can't use abilities during the carpet's 1.3-second summon, and that flight speed is capped while you carry the Soul Urn.
The late-game kill: Decay, Frozen Shelter, Scourge
This is the combo the build is made for. In the video's order:
- Ice Path into Magic Carpet to reach a carry who is farming alone.
- Cast Decay from range (base 20m, longer with spirit power). It deals a percentage of their current health over 12 seconds and cuts their healing by 50%.
- Get close, start Arctic Beam, then cast Frozen Shelter over both of you.
- Self-cast Scourge (an aura dealing 2.3% of max health per second plus spirit scaling, with +40% spirit resist for you), throw Frost Grenade, and keep beaming.
- Ice Path out, or use the carpet again, once the kill is done.
Spirit Burn adds a burst and an 8-second -70% healing debuff once you deal 500 spirit damage to a target within 5 seconds. Against a tanky target it stacks well with Decay's healing cut.
Correction: the video's "one Decay takes about 50% of their life" was filmed before Decay lost 25% DPS on 16 September 2026, and the wiki says Decay's damage is non-lethal. Decay softens a target, but the beam, the grenade and Scourge have to finish the kill.
The video's last trick, escaping your own dome with Warp Stone just as it lands, is described there as a probable bug (as of 21 August 2026). We couldn't confirm it still works, so the build screen's advice stands: take Unstoppable instead.
Kelvin counters and what to do about them
skip If an enemy builds any of these, don't dome them first. Pick a different target or play the long game.
| Counter | Why it beats the combo (wiki) | Your answer |
|---|---|---|
| Ethereal Shift | 4s of invulnerability inside your dome | Wait for it to be used, then commit |
| Silencer | Bullets cut your spirit damage by 25% and build up to a silence | Unstoppable; stay out of their gun range |
| Inhibitor | Bullets give a -30% damage penalty and -40% incoming healing | Fight from range with Decay; don't stand in the dome with them |
| Infernus Afterburn T2 | -35% spirit damage while burning | Unstoppable suppresses it (wiki) |
| Mid-Boss Rejuvenator buff | The target revives in the fight | Make them use it, then reset |
| Lady Geist's ultimate | She swaps health with you just before dying | Decay her from range, don't dome her |
| Victor's ultimate | He comes back after you kill him, and can out-damage you in the dome | Don't dome Victor |
Anti-heal items such as Toxic Bullets also make Frozen Shelter's regen much weaker. Against heavy curse and silence users, the build screen says to sell Mystic Slow for Unstoppable early.
Surviving and teamfighting as Kelvin
free Most of these Kelvin tips come down to one point: you die when you get caught without your cooldowns, not because you're squishy. The video's habits:
- Go up. Ice Path can climb, and an airborne Kelvin over a rooftop is much harder to hit. Throwing Frost Grenade at a wall next to you still heals you.
- Self-dome without worrying about it. Even with an enemy trapped inside, Frozen Shelter's regen buys time for stamina and cooldowns to come back. Don't be afraid to use it to save a Walker either, since objectives under the dome can't be damaged.
- Every cast heals you. With Radiant Regeneration you heal on each ability cast, and Healing Tempo then gives the healed target +35% fire rate and +1.25 m/s move speed for 7 seconds. That includes your teammates when you grenade them.
- In big team fights, stay behind your front line and spot-heal with grenades. The dome-and-kill plan is for a carry caught alone, not for running into five enemies.
How this guide was fact-checked
Ability numbers, upgrades and item stats come from the deadlock.wiki pages for Kelvin, Golden Goose Egg, Decay, Scourge, Magic Carpet, Spirit Burn, Escalating Exposure, Enduring Speed, Healing Tempo, Radiant Regeneration, Mystic Slow, Silencer, Inhibitor, Ethereal Shift, Unstoppable, Infernus, Haunts and Sinner's Sacrifice, plus the 29 September 2026 update page, all read on 19 October 2026. The item order, skill order, farming priority and combo come from SwoleBenji's video and its on-screen build page. The movement speeds and heal amounts quoted as "the video's" are the creator's own readings.
Corrections to the video:
- Golden Goose Egg is now 80 souls a minute with a -15% damage penalty (it was 90 and -10%). The 3,200-soul target now takes about 35 minutes of holding.
- The Egg's "about 500 HP" is closer to 180 by the wiki's buff table.
- Decay lost 25% DPS on 16 September, and its damage is non-lethal.
- Radiant Regeneration was nerfed on 16 September and on 14 October.
- Magic Carpet is dismissed by any ability cast, so you can't beam from it.
- Frozen Shelter got a buff on 16 September: its regen now scales with spirit power.
We found no Kelvin ability changes in the 5 October or 14 October patches.
What this guide doesn't answer
- A gun or "beam carry" Kelvin build. Newer videos run other builds, but none we found had a full spoken build list to check, so we didn't invent one.
- Exact new-map farming routes. Camp positions after City Never Sleeps are still changing; learn them in a sandbox match.
- Matchups for heroes added in October 2026 (Rat King, Baba, Solomon, Deadman Danny, Violet, Nurse Harrow). There isn't enough reliable data on them yet.
- Street Brawl. Kelvin's grenade is smaller there and items come from a draft, so this build doesn't apply.
- Hero rankings. Where Kelvin sits in the current meta belongs in our Deadlock tier list, not here.
Frequently asked
What is the best Kelvin build in Deadlock right now?
A strong current option is the farm-first anti-carry build: Golden Goose Egg, Extra Spirit, Mystic Regeneration, Duration Extender on Arctic Beam, Mystic Slow and Superior Duration in lane; then Enduring Speed, Escalating Exposure, Radiant Regeneration, Healing Tempo, Magic Carpet and Transcendent Cooldown; and finally Boundless Spirit, Spirit Burn, Decay and Scourge. Swap Mystic Slow for Unstoppable if the enemy has curses or silences.
What is Kelvin's skill order in Deadlock?
Unlock Frost Grenade first, then Arctic Beam, Ice Path and Frozen Shelter. Max Arctic Beam first so you get its T3 (-13s cooldown and two extra beams) around boon 11, then max Frost Grenade, then Ice Path, and upgrade Frozen Shelter last.
How does Kelvin's Frozen Shelter work?
Frozen Shelter is a 5-second dome, 8m wide, that you cast on yourself or on a hero up to 10m away. It has a 185s cooldown. Allies inside regenerate 90 health per second (plus 0.2 per spirit power since 16 September 2026), enemies inside are slowed 28%, and objectives under it can't be damaged. Its T3 upgrade purges non-ultimate debuffs and adds +65 regen.
When should Kelvin eat the Golden Goose Egg?
Buy it at 800 souls as early as you can, then hatch it once the game clock passes 30 minutes to get the top buff tier. Since the 16 September 2026 patch it earns 80 souls a minute and gives a -15% damage penalty while you carry it, so the older advice of waiting for 3,200 souls now means holding it about 35 minutes.
What counters Kelvin in Deadlock?
Ethereal Shift (4s of invulnerability inside the dome), Silencer (-25% spirit damage), Inhibitor (-30% damage and -40% healing), Infernus's Afterburn T2 (-35% spirit damage), anti-heal items, the Mid-Boss Rejuvenator, Lady Geist's health swap and Victor's revive. Unstoppable answers silences and Afterburn; against the others, pick a different target for your dome.
