# WARNO Radar AA Mechanics: Radar, SEAD, and Air Defense Tips

> How WARNO's radar AA works: the radar icon, toggling radar off against SEAD, and deployed AA circles on the campaign map. It is for players who already handle basic anti-air and now want to manage radar-guided pieces such as the Kub and Shilka against SEAD and EW aircraft.

Radar AA in WARNO is managed differently from fire-and-forget AA, and the radar icon on a unit is what tells the two apart. This guide shows how to identify radar-equipped pieces such as the Kub and Shilka, when to toggle their radar off against SEAD and EW aircraft, and how deployed AA circles work on the campaign map. It also covers which plane type to send first when enemy air defense covers the route into a battle.

## Quick answer

| What | Answer |
| --- | --- |
| Radar AA units | Kub, Shilka |
| Fire-and-forget AA | Strela, no radar |
| Radar icon | Symbol beside an AAA unit |
| Main threat | SEAD aircraft with anti-radiation missiles |
| EW plane effect | Reduced radar AA accuracy |
| Protecting radar AA | Radar off, toggled by control group |
| Campaign auto-resolve | SEAD plane |
| Deployed AA circle | Sized by the unit's real-life range |

## Radar AA mechanics and the radar icon

Treat the radar symbol next to an AAA unit as the sign that the unit has active radar. Radar AA is different from fire-and-forget AA, so do not manage every anti-air unit the same way.

The Kub and Shilka are examples of radar AA. The Strela is fire-and-forget and does not have radar, so the radar toggle advice applies to radar-guided AA rather than every AA piece in your force.

Use the icon to identify which air-defense units have active radar. Radar AA creates a signal that SEAD and EW aircraft can interact with.

## Radar on and radar off control

  </li>
  <li>
    <label><input type="checkbox"><span class="name">Turn radar off when you need to protect radar AA from SEAD attacks.</span></label>
  </li>
  <li>
    <label><input type="checkbox"><span class="name">Put multiple radar AA pieces into a control group if you want to toggle them together.</span></label>
  </li>
  <li>
    <label><input type="checkbox"><span class="name">Turn the grouped radar AA back on when you want those units operating with radar again.</span></label>
  </li>
</ol>

Radar control is most useful when you expect SEAD timing to matter. Leaving radar on exposes the unit to the SEAD interaction, while turning it off is the direct way to keep that radar AA from being attacked through that channel.

## SEAD planes and electronic warfare

Radar AA can be spotted by SEAD aircraft. If the SEAD aircraft carries anti-radiation missiles, it can target those radar AA pieces.

EW planes interact with radar AA differently. They can spot radar AA and reduce its accuracy, rather than simply acting like a normal strike aircraft.

This is why fire-and-forget AA and radar AA need separate handling. A Strela is not radar AA, while units such as the Kub and Shilka belong in the radar-management group.

## Deployed AA on the campaign map

Anti-air is special on the campaign map because it can be set up to deploy. Once deployed, AA fires at aircraft that enter its circle.

The size of that circle changes between AA pieces. The circle depends on the unit's real-life range, so different AA units can cover different amounts of campaign-map space.

Use AA battalions to keep air-defense coverage close to the front line. Any aircraft flying into the deployed AA circle to reach a battle has to deal with that air-defense coverage first.

## Campaign auto-resolve against AA

<div class="tipbox alt"><span class="tag">How to choose</span>

**Choosing aircraft against deployed campaign AA**

Choose a SEAD plane first when enemy AA covers the route into the battle. Aircraft that enter AA range are handled through an auto-resolve check, and SEAD is the only plane type that can beat AA in that calculation.

Do not lead with other aircraft types into active deployed AA unless you are accepting that they are not the plane type meant to overcome that auto-resolve. Use non-SEAD aircraft for battles outside enemy AA coverage, or wait until the AA has already been beaten.

## SEAD and AA availability by campaign size

<div class="tipbox alt"><span class="tag">Campaign size</span>

If none of your available aircraft bring SEAD, you cannot deal with enemy air defense through the SEAD-first answer. In that situation, use aircraft only in battles where enemy air defense is not around.

Bigger campaigns usually have some SEAD planes, but they also usually have more AA. Smaller campaigns usually have fewer SEAD aircraft and fewer AA pieces on both sides.

## FAQ

### What does the AA radar icon mean?

The AA radar icon next to certain AAA units means their radar is active.

### What does SEAD stand for?

SEAD stands for suppression of enemy air defense.

### Can other planes fly after AA is beaten?

Yes. AA stays active for the whole turn until it has been beaten once, and after that other aircraft can operate in that area.
