# WARNO Infantry Forest Tactics for Ambushes and Defense

> How to build and fight a WARNO infantry group in forests, where vehicles are common, engagement ranges run longer, and anti-tank cover decides the fight. It is for players who already handle infantry in towns and want the forest version: what to bring, what leaves you exposed, and how to flank for side and rear shots.

By the end of this guide you can put together a WARNO forest infantry group that vehicles cannot simply run over: at least one good anti-tank infantry unit in every group, more AT than you would take into a town, and mid-range weapons such as snipers, medium machine guns and RPO-style launchers to use the slightly longer forest engagement ranges. It also covers keeping your infantry around your vehicles so enemy infantry cannot get side shots on them, working around enemy vehicles for side and rear angles where an RPG-7 rear hit can one-shot a tank, and sweeping enemy recon out of the trees with normal infantry before your vehicles commit.

## Quick answer

| What | Answer |
| --- | --- |
| Anti-tank per group | At least one good AT infantry unit |
| AT compared to towns | More than for a closer urban fight |
| Best forest weapons | Snipers, medium machine guns, RPO-style weapons |
| Forest engagement range | Slightly higher than close urban ranges |
| Weakest fit | Satchel charges and shock troops |
| Submachine guns | Still good, less important than in towns |
| RPG-7 rear hit | Can one-shot an enemy tank |
| Recon sweep unit | Normal infantry rather than recon infantry |

## Forest infantry tactics in WARNO: the core idea

![A tactical view of infantry units maneuvering in a forest in WARNO.](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/09/01-tactical-view-infantry.jpg "Forest infantry tactics focus on anti-tank coverage and mid-range weapons. Screenshot: SD League")

WARNO infantry forest tactics still depend on infantry, but forests are not city blocks. More vehicles operate in forests than in closer urban areas, so anti-tank weapons matter more.

Unsupported squads can be overrun if they do not have AT weapons that can kill vehicles. Vehicles still move faster than infantry through forests, which means an infantry group without anti-tank coverage can lose the fight to APCs and other vehicles before its close-range tools matter.

Forest ranges are also slightly higher than close urban ranges. That makes mid-range infantry weapons more useful and reduces the need to build the whole group around point-blank fighting.

## What infantry is good at in forests

| Weapon type | How it performs in a forest |
| --- | --- |
| **Mid-range weapons** | WARNO infantry strengths in forests come from the slightly higher engagement ranges. Snipers and medium machine guns become more efficient here than in closer urban fights. |
| **RPO-style weapons** | RPOs and similar weapons can still be helpful in forest fighting. They fit the mid-range focus better than weapons that need the squad to reach very short activation distance. |
| **Normal infantry into recon** | Normal infantry can be more cost-efficient when pushing enemy recon out of a forest. You are not paying extra for stealth and recon capabilities when the job is simply to force out a recon unit at close range. |

## What makes infantry vulnerable in forests

<div class="tipbox alt"><span class="tag">Watch out</span>

**Do not treat forests like towns**

WARNO infantry weaknesses show up when you send unsupported squads into a forest with no anti-tank answer. Vehicles and APCs appear more often than in close urban areas, and vehicles move faster than infantry through forests.

Satchel charges and shock troops are harder to use in forest fights because they must get close enough to activate. If the enemy keeps distance or drives through with vehicles, those very close-range tools may not connect before the squad is overrun.

</ol>

## Forest fights versus city combat

| Terrain | How infantry behaves there |
| --- | --- |
| **Forests** | WARNO infantry city combat differs from forest fighting because forests have more vehicles around, slightly higher ranges, and a stronger need for anti-tank infantry. Snipers, medium machine guns, and RPO-style weapons gain value from those conditions. |
| **Cities and towns** | Close urban areas have less vehicle presence than forests. Submachine guns are still good in forests, but they are not as important there as they are in towns. |

## Clear enemy recon before committing vehicles

<div class="tipbox alt"><span class="tag">How to choose</span>

**When to sweep with infantry first**

Choose a forest infantry push when enemy recon is spotting the area where your vehicles need to operate. Clearing that recon helps your vehicles stay hidden and get the first shot on enemy vehicles.

Choose normal infantry for the recon sweep when the enemy recon unit is there mainly for stealth and recon capability. Even if the recon infantry can fight decently, normal infantry can be more cost-efficient because you are not paying the extra cost for recon tools.

Clearing enemy recon makes it easier for your vehicles to stay hidden and get the first shot on enemy vehicles in the forest. That keeps your vehicles from being exposed early and preserves the first-shot advantage against enemy vehicles in the forest.

## FAQ

### Do I need anti-tank infantry in a WARNO forest?

Yes. Put at least one good anti-tank infantry unit with every forest infantry group, and bring more AT than you would for a closer urban fight. More vehicles operate in forests than in close urban areas and vehicles move faster than infantry through them, so an unsupported squad with no AT answer can be overrun by APCs and other vehicles.

### Which infantry weapons are best in forests?

Mid-range ones. Forest ranges are slightly higher than close urban ranges, so snipers and medium machine guns become more efficient here than in closer urban fights, and RPO-style weapons fit that mid-range focus.

### Are submachine guns still useful in forests?

They are still good in forests, but they are less important than in towns, so do not build the whole group around them. The slightly higher forest ranges reduce the need to plan around point-blank fighting.

### Can infantry kill tanks in a forest?

From the right angle, yes. Use the infantry to flank enemy units instead of only pushing into their front and aim for side or rear shots whenever the forest lets you move around them; if an RPG-7 gets behind an enemy tank, a rear hit can one-shot the tank.
