## 🎯 The core idea

> The Elder is Valheim's second boss and the key to the Iron Age: beat him and you get the Swamp key that opens Sunken Crypts. In Valheim 1.0 he has 2,500 health and takes double damage from fire. Find his altar with a Vegvisir in a Burial Chamber, bring three Ancient seeds, hide behind the altar's pillars from his vine volley, and roll away from his stomp.

## Elder location: the Vegvisir in a Burial Chamber

![The red Vegvisir for The Elder glowing on a wall inside a Valheim Burial Chamber in the Black Forest](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0024.webp)

free The Elder location is never marked for you at the start. You reveal it with a **Vegvisir**, a glowing red rune stone. The Valheim wiki confirms that the Elder Vegvisir is found in **Burial Chambers**, the stone-doorway dungeons of the Black Forest, and sometimes in ruined structures around the Black Forest. Interact with it ("Register location" on screen) and the nearest summoning altar is added to your map.

Not every Burial Chamber has one, as the video points out, so you may have to clear two or three. Expect Skeletons, Ghosts and Rancid remains spawning from Evil bone piles. The wiki's tip for these mazes is a good one: pick the left or right wall as you enter and follow it. You'll see every room and still find the exit. Enemies you kill inside don't respawn, so a cleared chamber stays cleared. Loot the chests and floor altars as you go: Burial Chambers are also where you find Surtling cores for your first smelter.

## Valheim ancient seeds: where they actually drop

![An Ancient Seed tooltip in the Valheim inventory, used to summon The Elder](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0036_L10n6u1.webp)

grind To summon The Elder you need **exactly three Ancient seeds**. The video says "about three"; the wiki says three, no more. The creator carried five into the fight, which is a sensible spare.

Per the wiki, Valheim ancient seeds come from only two sources:

| Source | Seed drop | Notes |
| ------ | --------- | ----- |
| Greydwarf brute, 0★ | 1 seed, 33% chance | 150 health, slow, hits hard (30 slash) |
| Greydwarf brute, 1★ | 2 seeds, 66% chance | Better odds per kill |
| Greydwarf brute, 2★ | 4 seeds | Guaranteed per the drop table |
| Greydwarf nest (destroyed) | Ancient seeds | Destroying the nest is what drops them |

**The video gets one source wrong.** It says seeds drop from brutes and shamans. The wiki's drop list for the Greydwarf shaman is Greydwarf eye, its trophy, Resin, Wood and berries, with no Ancient seed. Shamans are still worth killing first, because they throw poison and heal nearby Greydwarfs, but they won't give you seeds.

## Farming seeds at Greydwarf nests

![Fighting a Greydwarf Brute next to a glowing Greydwarf nest in the Black Forest to farm Ancient seeds](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0040_gdXULGv.webp)

cheap The fastest route is the one the video shows: find a **Greydwarf nest** (the purple, glowing spawner in the Black Forest), kill what comes out of it, then break the nest. Per the wiki, a nest spawns plain Greydwarfs 72% of the time and brutes or shamans 14% each, so leaving a nest alive for a while gives you more brute rolls. Each new spawn also has a 15% chance to be 1-star.

The nest has 100 durability. It's weak to fire (×1.5) and resistant to blunt and pierce, so an axe or fire arrows break it faster than a club or plain arrows. Don't use a pickaxe: the nest is immune to pickaxe damage. Brutes are the dangerous part of this farm. Pull them one at a time and keep your distance between swings.

## Prep before the fight: Rested, food and a spawn point

![Walking up from the boat to The Elder's altar area on the Black Forest coast before setting up a shelter](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0062_qDKQP0q.webp)

setup The video's creator sails to the altar and builds a tiny shelter next to it before summoning: a bed and a roof, nothing more. That gives you a respawn point a few steps from the fight. If you die, you can run straight back for your gravestone. The wiki adds a bigger version of the same idea: the area under the altar platform can be dug out into a full underground base with a Workbench, Forge and Portal, out of the Elder's reach.

Sit by the fire under that roof to get **Rested**. Per the wiki, it gives +50% health regeneration and +100% stamina regeneration and lasts 7 minutes plus 1 minute per comfort level. The creator's buff timer reads about 10 minutes when the fight starts. Eat your three best foods. In the footage, the health bar sits around 57 when the boss spawns, and it drops to 24 by the end, so more health food is a cheap way to make your first attempt safer. The wiki's boss-strategy page recommends bronze gear and your best food for this fight. Activating the Eikthyr power before you start also helps, because kiting burns a lot of stamina.

## Elder altar Valheim: summon with three Ancient seeds

![The Elder's altar in Valheim 1.0 with its fire bowl, stone platform and carved pillars before the summon](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0077_srGDQGB.webp)

cheap The Elder altar in Valheim is a raised stone platform with a fire bowl in the middle and four tall carved pillars around it. Its runestone reads "Burn their young", a hint at the seeds, and the tops of the pillars are shaped like Ancient seeds. Put your seeds on your hotbar (the creator uses slot 7), stand at the fire bowl and use that hotbar key to offer them. "You make the sacrifice" appears, and seconds later "The Elder rises from the forest".

Like every boss, the Elder can be summoned again whenever you bring three more seeds. Summon him in daylight if you can. The wiki warns that Trolls and Greydwarfs from the surrounding forest can join the fight, and that gets much worse at night.

## The Elder's three attacks and how to avoid each

![The Elder rising from the forest while the player takes cover behind a pillar on the altar](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0088_z98lN8o.webp)

free The Elder has three attacks. All of them are listed on the Valheim wiki:

| Attack | What it does | Damage | Cooldown | How to handle it |
| ------ | ------------ | ------ | -------- | ---------------- |
| Shoot (vine volley) | 25 vines fired at you from 15 to 50 m away, tracking as he aims | 35 pierce per vine | 6 s | Break line of sight behind a pillar, or stay in melee range, where he won't use it |
| Root Spawn | Raises an arm and summons 15 Roots in a 15 m circle around you | Each Root hits for 55 blunt | 25 s | Move out of the circle; Roots can't walk and vanish after 18 to 20 s |
| Stomp | Slams a foot down when you're within 3 m, hitting a 5 m circle | 60 blunt | 5 s | Roll through it, back off, or block with a good shield |

The vine volley is why the creator ducks behind a pillar the moment the Elder spawns. The wiki confirms **the four pillars around the altar are indestructible**, so they're reliable cover. Anything you build there isn't: both the vines and the stomp do heavy chop and pickaxe damage, and the stomp's 1,000 chop damage flattens trees and walls.

The Elder's aura also clears darkness and rain around the altar while he's alive. That's why the fight looks bright and golden in the video, unlike the dark Eikthyr fight.

## Roots: break them or walk away

![Roots summoned by The Elder bursting from the ground around the player on the altar](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0096.webp)

skip The video calls the summoned tentacles one-hit kills. The wiki gives each Root **20 health**, so a strong hit kills one, but in the footage an axe hit lands for 17.9 damage, just short. Roots take ×1.5 fire damage and are immune to stagger.

The bigger point: don't stand in the circle swinging at all 15 of them. Each Root hits for 55 blunt, more than many early health bars can take twice. Roots can't move, and they despawn after 18 to 20 seconds or when the Elder dies, so the wiki's advice is to run out of the circle rather than fight them. Kill only the ones between you and the boss or your cover. With a 25-second cooldown, a new wave appears soon after the last one disappears.

## How to beat the Elder in melee without eating the stomp

![Melee hits on The Elder's feet at close range, where he won't use his vine volley](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0113_ZWDE3Zt.webp)

setup The video's fight is mostly melee. The creator stands next to the Elder's legs and swings at his feet, and the boss is close enough that he never uses his vine volley. That matches the wiki: he won't shoot a player in melee range. The cost is the **stomp**: 60 blunt damage in a 5-metre circle, available every 5 seconds whenever you're within 3 metres.

Watch for the foot lifting. When it does, roll away or through it. The wiki confirms the dodge roll's brief invincibility avoids it. Blocking works too. Per the wiki, a solo player with a fully upgraded Bronze buckler can block most stomps without being staggered, and a parry or a Block skill of 18 means you're never staggered at all. The Elder himself is immune to stagger, so don't expect a parry to open him up for a big hit.

His damage resistances (wiki): neutral to blunt, slash, pierce, frost and lightning; immune to poison, spirit, chop and pickaxe. Any normal weapon works, but your axe's chop damage and any poison effect do nothing to him.

## Elder weakness: fire, fire arrows and the Finewood bow

![The player running between a burning fire bowl and a pillar as The Elder's Roots spread over the altar](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0105.webp)

cheap The Elder's weakness is fire. The wiki lists him as **very weak to fire (×2)**, the only damage type he's weak to. The video opens the fight by "giving him some fire" and suggests kiting with fire arrows if you can't dodge reliably.

Fire arrows against the Elder are the safest plan for most players. One batch is **8 Wood + 8 Resin + 2 Feathers for 20 arrows** at a level 2 Workbench, and each arrow deals 11 pierce + 22 fire damage, then burns. Per the wiki, the best bow at this stage is the **Finewood bow** (10 Finewood, 10 Corewood, 2 Deer hide; 32 pierce base). The wiki's boss-strategy page warns that a solo player may need up to **200 fire arrows**, depending on bow skill. That's a lot more than the 20 to 40 that does for Eikthyr, because the Elder has five times the health (2,500 vs 500). Craft a large stack before you go.

Two catches from the wiki: rain puts out burning quickly on wet targets (the Elder's aura stops rain around the altar, which helps), and burning from several players doesn't stack, so a group of archers doesn't multiply the damage over time.

## Elder solo Valheim: finishing the fight

![The Elder down to about a fifth of his health while the player dodges at his feet](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0122_TjP38lG.webp)

setup The whole video is an Elder solo fight. The pattern that works: shoot or hit him, break line of sight behind a pillar when he backs off to shoot, step out of the Root circle when it appears, and roll when the foot comes up. Near the end, the creator's health is in the 40s with the boss on about a fifth of his bar. That's the moment to back off behind a pillar, let Rested regeneration catch up, and finish him from range rather than trading blows.

In a group, the wiki says the Elder usually targets the closest player, so pick one player to tank and keep the rest spread out so the vine volley only chases one person. Enemies deal 4% more damage for each extra player nearby, so a buckler that blocks his stomp solo may not hold up in co-op.

## Elder drops Valheim: trophy and Swamp key

![The Elder has been felled message on the altar in Valheim 1.0](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0128_HPRdfhm.webp)

free "The Elder has been felled" means the fight is over. Per the wiki, the Elder drops are **one Elder trophy** and **one Swamp key per player**, so every player in a group gets their own key.

The **Valheim swamp key** opens the Sunken Crypts in the Swamp, the main early source of Scrap Iron and the start of the Iron Age. You need it in your inventory the first time you open each crypt gate. After that, the gate stays open, and the key is never used up.

Beating him also changes the world. Haldor starts selling Thunder stones and Ymir flesh, and the Bog Witch adds Woodland herb blend for 120 coins. Greydwarf brutes and shamans can now spawn in the Meadows at night, so check your starting base's defences.

## Elder power Valheim: hang the trophy at the Sacrificial Stones

![The Elder's fallen body on the altar after the fight, before collecting his trophy and Swamp key](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0130_mbhwG1a.webp)

free To unlock the Elder power, take his trophy to the **Sacrificial Stones** where you first spawned and hang it on his stone, the same way you did with Eikthyr's. Select it there and activate it with the Forsaken power key (F by default).

Per the wiki, the Elder power gives **+60% chop and pickaxe damage and +30% health regeneration for 300 seconds**. It shares the 20-minute cooldown with every Forsaken power, and it applies to every player within 10 metres. Use it for logging runs and big mining trips, like breaking open the copper deposits you'll want for bronze, or the mud piles in Sunken Crypts.

If you haven't fought the first boss yet, start with our [Eikthyr boss guide](/guides/valheim-eikthyr-boss-guide). His Hard antler pickaxe is what lets you mine copper and tin for the bronze gear this fight rewards.

## How this guide was fact-checked

The source is MrCoreRPG's Valheim 1.0 Elder video, uploaded on 16 September 2026, one week after 1.0 and the Deep North launched. The live patch at the time of writing is 1.0.20. The wiki's version history lists no change to the Elder, his drops, Ancient seeds or fire arrows between 1.0.00 and 1.0.20. His Forsaken power was last rebalanced before 1.0, in the 0.221.4 "Call to Arms" update. The Fandom Elder page used here was edited on 19 October 2026.

**From the community Valheim wiki (Fandom), which wins wherever it and the video disagree:**
- Health (2,500), the resistance table and stagger immunity
- The full attack table: damage, cooldowns, ranges and Root numbers
- The Vegvisir locations and the three-seed summoning cost
- Ancient seed sources and the Greydwarf brute drop chances
- Greydwarf nest spawn odds and resistances
- The indestructible pillars and the strategy notes on blocking, rolling, groups and the 200-arrow estimate
- Fire arrow and Finewood bow recipes and stats
- Rested numbers, drops, the Swamp key's behaviour, trader unlocks and the Forsaken power

The wiki.gg mirror refused automated access, so every wiki fact here comes from the Fandom pages.

**From the video's own footage:**
- The Vegvisir inside a Burial Chamber and the map marker it adds
- Farming at a nest, the five seeds carried and the hotbar summon
- The bed-and-roof shelter, the Rested timer and the health values during the fight
- Fighting from behind the pillars and at the Elder's feet, and the 17.9-damage hit on a Root

**Corrections to the video:**
- **Seed sources:** the video says shamans drop Ancient seeds. The wiki lists only Greydwarf brutes and Greydwarf nests.
- **Seed count:** the video says "about three". The wiki says exactly three.
- **Roots:** the video calls them one-hit. The wiki gives them 20 health, and the video's own axe hit did 17.9.

## What this guide doesn't answer

- **Which Burial Chamber has the Vegvisir in your seed:** it depends on world generation, so clear chambers until you find one.
- **Bronze gear recipes:** the wiki recommends bronze for this fight, but smelting and crafting are a separate topic.
- **Sunken Crypts and Bonemass:** the Swamp key opens the next stage, which needs its own preparation.
- **Bow skill levelling:** the 200-arrow estimate depends on skill, and levelling it fast is a skills topic.
- **Mods and world modifiers:** everything here assumes default 1.0 difficulty with no combat modifiers changed.

## FAQ

### How do you find The Elder in Valheim?

Find a Vegvisir, a glowing red rune stone, inside a Burial Chamber in the Black Forest (some ruined structures there have one too). Interact with it to mark the nearest Elder altar on your map. Not every Burial Chamber has one, so you may have to clear a few.

### How many Ancient seeds do you need to summon The Elder?

Exactly three. Put them on your hotbar, stand at the fire bowl in the middle of the altar and use that hotbar key to offer them. Ancient seeds drop from Greydwarf brutes (33% chance for one seed at 0 stars, better at 1 and 2 stars) and from destroyed Greydwarf nests. Greydwarf shamans don't drop them.

### What is The Elder weak to in Valheim?

Fire. The wiki lists him as very weak to fire, taking double damage, and neutral to blunt, slash, pierce, frost and lightning. He is immune to poison, spirit, chop, pickaxe and stagger. Fire arrows from a Finewood bow are the safest option, but a solo player may need up to 200 depending on bow skill.

### How do you dodge The Elder's attacks?

Hide behind the four indestructible pillars around the altar to block his 25-vine volley, which he only uses when you're 15 to 50 metres away. Run out of the 15-metre Root circle instead of fighting all 15 Roots. When you're within 3 metres, roll away from his stomp, which deals 60 blunt damage in a 5-metre circle every 5 seconds.

### What does The Elder drop and what does his power do?

He drops his trophy and one Swamp key per player. The Swamp key opens Sunken Crypts in the Swamp, which hold Scrap Iron, and it is never used up. Hang the trophy at the Sacrificial Stones to unlock his Forsaken power: +60% chop and pickaxe damage and +30% health regeneration for 300 seconds, on a 20-minute cooldown shared with all powers.
