## 🎯 The core idea

> The best Valheim weapon in each biome is the one that matches what you fight there. Take a Flint spear or Club in the Meadows, an atgeir or Abyssal razor in the Black Forest, an Iron mace in the Swamp, Frostner or fists later, then Mistwalker or staffs in the Mistlands and Berserkir axes in the Ashlands. Parrying is free now, so fists and knives rank higher than they used to.

free costs nothing

cheap small cost

setup needs preparation

grind pays off slowly

skip the thing to stop doing

## Valheim best weapon by biome: the short list

![Valheim weapon display with the Staff of protection, Himminafl and Skoll and Hati on item stands](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0370_Ip8L1gN.webp)

This tier list follows SnazzyGames' January 2026 video, which came out before Valheim 1.0. It covers the Meadows through the Ashlands. Every damage number and recipe below comes from the Valheim wiki on Fandom, at base quality (level 1). Where the wiki and the video disagree, the wiki wins and the section says so.

| Biome | Main pick | Alternatives | Why |
| ----- | --------- | ------------ | --- |
| Meadows | Flint spear | Club | Cheap, fast, throwable; the Club adds blunt for skeletons |
| Black Forest | Bronze atgeir | Abyssal razor, Paws of the Bear | Spin attack for Greydwarf packs and Trolls; best parry weapons |
| Swamp | Huntsman bow (ranged), Iron mace (melee) | None | Quiet bow for stealth; blunt for the undead and Bonemass |
| Mountains | Flesh rippers | Silver sword, Frostner | Fists with a 6x parry; frost and spirit wasted on many Mountain foes |
| Plains | Black metal atgeir | Porcupine, Vilebone maulclaws | Crowd control and reach against Fulings and Lox |
| Mistlands | Staff of protection + Staff of frost (magic), Mistwalker (melee) | Skoll and Hati | Barrier makes every parry succeed; Mistwalker's light cuts the mist |
| Ashlands | Staff of the Wild or Staff of fracturing (magic), Thundering Berserkir axes (melee) | Splitnir | Summons and chain lightning for swarms |

Valheim weapon progression isn't strictly linear. A strong pick often stays useful a biome or two past where you craft it, and the video keeps the Flint spear into the Black Forest and Frostner all the way to the Ashlands. For the full biome order, see our [Valheim progression guide](/guides/valheim-progression-guide).

## Why parrying and adrenaline reshuffled the weapons ranked here

![Valheim parry bonus table by weapon type shown next to the Abyssal razor tooltip](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0115_YrNkSjF.webp)

free The video's main point is that the Call to Arms update changed what's good. Two changes matter most, and the wiki confirms both:

- **Parrying costs no stamina.** The wiki's blocking page says a parry (a block in the last 0.25 seconds before a hit) uses no stamina and staggers the attacker. Bosses are immune to that stagger.
- **Adrenaline feeds trinkets.** With a trinket equipped, hits, perfect blocks and perfect dodges fill an adrenaline bar. Each successful parry gives **+5 adrenaline**. A full bar triggers the trinket's effect.

That favours fast weapons and weapons with a big **parry bonus**, the multiplier on block armour when you parry. The video shows the wiki's parry table on screen at this point, and the wiki pages agree:

| Weapon type | Parry bonus | Movement penalty |
| ----------- | ----------- | ---------------- |
| Fists (Paws of the Bear, Flesh rippers, Vilebone maulclaws) | 6x | None |
| Knives (Abyssal razor, Skoll and Hati) | 4x | None |
| Swords, maces, spears, axes, atgeirs | 2x | 5% one-handed and atgeirs, 20% two-handed axes and sledges |
| Bows and round shields | 1.5x | 5% |

The video also says sloped combat got easier. The wiki's Call to Arms patch notes list "vertical fighting improvements", so hitting enemies above or below you on a slope works better than it used to.

## Valheim best early weapon: Flint spear and Club in the Meadows

![Flint spear tooltip while a player hunts in the Valheim Meadows](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0025_O824Wed.webp)

cheap The Flint spear is the video's pick for the Meadows, and it's hard to argue with. It's a one-handed spear made at a level 1 Workbench from **5 Wood, 10 Flint and 2 Leather scraps**. Per the wiki it deals **20 pierce** per stab, and the secondary attack throws it for **30 pierce**. Walk over to pick it back up. A stab takes 0.68 seconds, among the fastest attacks in the game, so it fills an adrenaline bar quickly once you have a trinket. The video also claims spears are the fastest melee skill to level. The wiki doesn't confirm that, so treat it as the creator's experience.

The Club is the honourable mention. You craft it by hand from **6 Wood**, and it deals **12 blunt**. That number looks small, but blunt is what you want against Skeletons, which the wiki lists as weak to blunt (1.5x) and resistant to pierce (0.5x). Keep one on your hotbar for the Black Forest burial chambers.

| Weapon | Station | Recipe | Damage (level 1) | Parry bonus |
| ------ | ------- | ------ | ---------------- | ----------- |
| Flint spear | Workbench 1 | 5 Wood, 10 Flint, 2 Leather scraps | 20 pierce (30 thrown) | 2x |
| Club | Crafting menu | 6 Wood | 12 blunt | 2x |

## Black Forest: Bronze atgeir, Abyssal razor and Paws of the Bear

![Bronze atgeir spin attack staggering a Troll in the Valheim Black Forest](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0155_q6w9cHU.webp)

setup The Black Forest pick most players can rely on is the **Bronze atgeir**. It's a two-handed polearm made at a level 1 Forge from **10 Wood, 8 Bronze and 2 Leather scraps**, and it deals **45 pierce**. Its secondary attack is a 360-degree spin with no multitarget penalty, so it hits a whole Greydwarf pack at once. The spin has **270 stagger**, which is how the video locks down Trolls. That matchup suits it: the wiki lists Trolls as weak to pierce (1.5x) and very weak to it on the head (2x), but resistant to blunt.

The video's favourite is the **Abyssal razor**, a knife made at a level 2 Workbench from **4 Finewood, 20 Chitin and 2 Leather scraps**. It deals **20 pierce + 20 slash**, has a **4x parry bonus** and no movement penalty. The catch is the Chitin. Per the wiki it comes from Abyssal barnacles on Leviathans, the moving islands at sea, so you need a boat and luck to find one. The video calls it "cheating a bit" and so do we, but if you find a Leviathan early, the razor is a big upgrade.

The video calls the newest weapon here the "fists of the bear". The wiki's name is **Paws of the Bear**: two-handed fists made at a level 2 Workbench from **2 Bear hide, 2 Bear paw and 4 Leather scraps**, dealing **25 slash** with a **6x parry bonus**, the highest of any weapon type. They're weak on paper, but they start your Fists skill early, which pays off in the Mountains.

## Swamp: Iron mace for melee, the best mace before silver

![Iron mace tooltip during a fight in the Valheim Swamp](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0240_qGLyL6I.webp)

setup If you only craft one melee weapon from Swamp iron, make the **Iron mace**. It's one-handed and needs a level 2 Forge with **4 Wood, 20 Iron and 3 Leather scraps**. Per the wiki it deals **55 blunt**, and its secondary attack is a slow overhead smash for **137.5 blunt**.

The video's reason is the right one. Most Swamp enemies take full or extra damage from blunt, and so does the Swamp boss: the wiki gives Bonemass **1.5x damage from blunt** and only a quarter from pierce. Our [Valheim Bonemass boss guide](/guides/valheim-bonemass-boss-guide) recommends the same mace, and the [Valheim Moder boss guide](/guides/valheim-moder-boss-guide) keeps it as the melee pick for the next boss because she's immune to frost. If you're asking for the best mace in Valheim before the Mountains, it's this one. After that, Frostner takes over for most fights.

## Valheim best bow at each stage, and which arrows

![Huntsman bow tooltip while sneaking through the dark Valheim Swamp](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0200_nurWgxN.webp)

cheap The video names the **Huntsman bow** the Swamp's best weapon overall, for stealth rather than damage. It needs a level 1 Forge with **10 Finewood, 20 Iron, 10 Feathers and 2 Deer hide**, and deals **42 pierce**. The wiki confirms its quiet shots: it creates only **four metres of noise** when you fire and when the arrow lands. The video says other bows make 15 m of noise on the shot and 8 m on impact. The wiki doesn't list those two numbers, so take them as the video's. Either way, it's the bow for picking off a Fuling camp one by one.

Later bows hit harder. The video doesn't rank them, so this table is from the wiki:

| Bow | Biome | Station | Recipe | Damage (level 1) |
| --- | ----- | ------- | ------ | ---------------- |
| Huntsman bow | Swamp | Forge 1 | 10 Finewood, 20 Iron, 10 Feathers, 2 Deer hide | 42 pierce |
| Draugr Fang | Mountains | Forge 2 | 10 Ancient bark, 20 Silver, 2 Deer hide, 10 Guck | 47 pierce + 5 poison |
| Spinesnap | Mistlands | Black forge 1 | 10 Finewood, 40 Bone fragments, 10 Refined eitr | 72 pierce + 5 spirit |
| Ash Fang | Ashlands | Black forge 3 | 10 Ashwood, 16 Charred bone, 5 Flametal, 5 Bonemaw tooth | 82 pierce |

The arrows matter as much as the bow. Our boss guides use fire arrows on Eikthyr and the Elder. For Moder, the wiki ranks Obsidian arrows slightly above fire arrows, even though she's weak to fire. Against Yagluth and Fader, the wiki rates **Frost arrows** as the best arrow type. Both bosses resist pierce, so the frost part of each arrow does most of the work. Don't bring bows to Bonemass at all: pierce does a quarter of its normal damage to him.

## Mountains: Flesh rippers, Silver sword and Frostner

![Flesh rippers fists tooltip in a snowy Valheim Mountains fight](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0262_kK8n3ol.webp)

grind This is where the video changed its mind the most. Its pick is the **Flesh rippers**, two-handed fists made at a level 3 Forge from **10 Fenris hair, 6 Fenris claw and 10 Silver**. Per the wiki they deal **60 slash**, have a **6x parry bonus** and slow you down not at all. The video's reasoning: free parries suit fists best, and if you trained Fists with the Paws of the Bear, you arrive with a higher skill. The wiki adds that the three-piece **Fenris set** gives **+15 Fists**, which is the "Fenris" combo the creator mentions.

The old favourites are the **Silver sword** (level 3 Forge: 2 Wood, 40 Silver, 3 Leather scraps, 5 Iron; **75 slash + 30 spirit**) and **Frostner** (level 3 Forge: 10 Ancient bark, 30 Silver, 5 Ymir flesh, 5 Freeze gland; **35 blunt + 40 frost + 20 spirit**). The video says they're weaker in the Mountains themselves, and the wiki backs that up:

| Mountain enemy | Frost | Spirit |
| -------------- | ----- | ------ |
| Drake | Immune | Immune |
| Stone Golem | Immune | Immune |
| Wolf | Neutral | Immune |
| Fenring | Neutral | Neutral |
| Moder (boss) | Immune | Immune |

So Valheim's Frostner is a Plains-and-later weapon that you craft in the Mountains. It's the pick in our [Valheim Yagluth boss guide](/guides/valheim-yagluth-boss-guide): three damage types, all neutral against him. And the Ashlands Charred are weak to spirit (1.5x), which is why the video calls both silver weapons viable that late.

## Plains: Black metal atgeir, Porcupine and Vilebone maulclaws

![Player with a Black metal atgeir charging a Fuling camp in the Valheim Plains](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0305_qaHR0sX.webp)

setup The video's Plains pick is the **Black metal atgeir** (the video says "blackmetal atgeir"). It needs a level 4 Forge with **10 Finewood, 30 Black metal and 5 Linen thread**, and deals **105 pierce**. The spin attack hits everything around you for **630 stagger** with no multitarget penalty. That's what you want when a Fuling camp rushes you, and the reach lets you poke Lox and Fuling Berserkers from a safer distance. This is the video's answer to the best atgeir before the Mistlands' Himminafl.

Two alternatives, both checked against the wiki:

| Weapon | Station | Recipe | Damage (level 1) | Parry bonus |
| ------ | ------- | ------ | ---------------- | ----------- |
| Black metal atgeir | Forge 4 | 10 Finewood, 30 Black metal, 5 Linen thread | 105 pierce | 2x |
| Porcupine (one-handed mace) | Forge 4 | 5 Finewood, 20 Iron, 5 Needle, 10 Linen thread | 50 blunt + 45 pierce | 2x |
| Vilebone maulclaws (fists) | Forge 4 | 2 Bear hide, 2 Vile ribcage, 2 Black metal, 4 Linen thread | 60 pierce + 20 slash | 6x |

The Porcupine's two damage types let you work around resistances, and the maulclaws are the natural next step if you've been levelling Fists since the Black Forest.

## Mistlands magic: Staff of protection and Staff of frost

![Staff of protection tooltip as a barrier and summoned skeletons face Seekers in the Valheim Mistlands](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0395_drBJeyS.webp)

setup The video says magic is the strongest approach in the Mistlands, and its first pick does no damage at all. The **Staff of protection** (Galdr table 1: **20 Yggdrasil wood, 4 Blood clot, 16 Refined eitr**) casts a barrier. The wiki puts its absorption at **200 damage at Blood magic level 0, rising by 5 per level to 700 at level 100**. You can cast it on other players or on your summoned skeletons, which makes it a strong pick for solo players with a Dead raiser.

The video shows a wiki quote on screen: with a barrier up, your parries succeed no matter your weapon's parry bonus or stagger limit. The current Fandom blocking page says it more briefly: the barrier "offers the ability to parry without worrying about stagger".

For damage, the video picks the **Staff of frost** (Galdr table 1: **20 Yggdrasil wood, 4 Freeze gland, 16 Refined eitr**) over the Staff of embers. It fires fast, inaccurate shards of **30 frost** each, and the wiki confirms that frost slows anything it hits. Wet enemies take extra frost damage. The Staff of embers hits harder per cast (**120 blunt + 120 fire**) but fires much slower. The video pairs the frost staff with the **Pulsating earrings** trinket, which the wiki lists as **+25% eitr regeneration**.

## Mistlands melee: Mistwalker, Skoll and Hati, Krom

![Mistwalker sword tooltip in a Valheim Mistlands fight](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0450.webp)

cheap For melee, the video's pick is still the **Mistwalker**, the best sword in the Mistlands. It's made at a level 1 Black forge from **3 Finewood, 15 Iron, 10 Refined eitr and 3 Wisp**, and deals **75 slash + 40 frost**, so it slows enemies like the frost staff. Its glow clears the mist around you. The 1.0 patch notes on the wiki increased Mistwalker's mist removal range, so it works even better now than in the video. Pair it with the **Resounding shackle** trinket: per the wiki, at 75 adrenaline it gives **100 stamina and +10% slash damage for 60 seconds**.

The video's dark horse is **Skoll and Hati**, the Mistlands knives (Black forge 1: **4 Finewood, 10 Iron, 10 Black metal**). They deal **45 pierce + 45 slash**, have a **4x parry bonus** and no movement penalty. The video calls them the best knives in the game. That was true in January 2026, but 1.0 added three dagger lines in the Deep North, so treat it as "best knives through the Ashlands".

The video doesn't cover **Krom**. Per the wiki, it's the Mistlands two-handed sword (Black forge 1: **30 Iron, 20 Bronze, 5 Scale hide**) dealing **150 slash** per swing, with no multitarget penalty. It's the hard-hitting alternative if you'd rather not use a shield. Against the Queen, our [Valheim Queen boss guide](/guides/valheim-queen-boss-guide) avoids pierce, because she resists it, and uses Mistwalker plus a sledge.

## Ashlands magic: Staff of the Wild and Staff of fracturing

![Staff of the Wild summoning Roots against Ashlands enemies in Valheim](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0495_ZHIwoSG.webp)

setup The video calls it the "staff of the wilds". The wiki name is **Staff of the Wild** (Galdr table 2: **15 Ashwood, 10 Fiddlehead, 3 Celestial feather, 1 Jade**). Each cast fires a **20 blunt + 20 poison** projectile, and a Root grows where it lands. Per the wiki, up to **10 Roots** can be active at once, each lasts about 25 seconds, and each Root hit has a **10% chance to immobilise the enemy for 10 seconds**. That's the root effect the video mentions. It's arguably the best solo weapon for the Ashlands swarms, though the video finds it dull because the Roots do the work. It's also not wasted on Fader: our [Valheim Fader boss guide](/guides/valheim-fader-boss-guide) notes he takes poison damage.

The video's fun pick is the **Staff of fracturing** (Galdr table 2: **15 Charred bone, 5 Ashwood, 8 Proustite powder**). Each cast fires 12 small projectiles of **12 blunt + 12 fire** each. The wiki agrees with the video that it's strongest when most shards hit one target up close. One correction: the video recommends it against Morgen, but the wiki lists Morgen as **resistant to blunt and fire (0.5x)** and **weak to lightning (1.5x)**. For Morgen, use the lightning axes from the next section.

## Valheim best axe: Thundering Berserkir axes and Splitnir in the Ashlands

![Berserkir axes tooltip in the red Valheim Ashlands](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0540_iPvCRrG.webp)

grind For Ashlands melee, the video picks the **Berserkir axes**, dual-wielded axes made at a level 3 Black forge from **15 Charred bone, 24 Flametal and 3 Asksvin hide**. They deal **140 slash** per hit in a four-hit combo. The video recommends the "iolite, lightning variant", which the wiki calls the **Thundering Berserkir axes**: upgrade them at a level 4 Black forge with **5 Flametal and 1 Iolite**. Per the wiki, Iolite weapons gain **10 lightning damage and a 25% chance to apply Chain Lightning** on hit. That chain lightning helps against swarms, and the lightning matters most against Morgen.

The video's warning is fair: the axes need their whole combo to land, so they reward good parry timing. If you're not confident parrying, it suggests **Splitnir** (Black forge 3: **10 Ashwood, 6 Flametal, 2 Asksvin hide, 3 Bonemaw tooth**), a fast one-handed spear dealing **135 pierce**. Its 0.68-second stab triggers gem effects and adrenaline often. Use **Splitnir the Storming** (Iolite) for chain lightning or **Splitnir the Primal** (Jade) for rooting.

There's a real cost, though. The wiki lists Charred Warriors as **resistant to pierce (0.5x)**, and Fader takes half damage from pierce too. For the boss, our Fader guide sticks with the blunt **Flametal mace**. Splitnir works for exploring, but bring something else for Fader.

## Valheim best melee weapon against each boss

![Silver sword and Frostner tooltips side by side in Valheim](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0285_8DdAeet.webp)

free The video ranks weapons by biome, not by boss. Several picks are bad for the boss of their own biome. This table puts the video's picks next to what our boss guides recommend, all checked against the wiki's damage tables:

| Boss | What works | What to leave behind |
| ---- | ---------- | -------------------- |
| Eikthyr (Meadows) | Bow with fire arrows; any melee | Nothing; he's neutral to everything |
| The Elder (Black Forest) | Fire arrows (2x fire), axe or sword | Poison, spirit; chop damage does nothing |
| Bonemass (Swamp) | Iron mace or sledge (1.5x blunt), frost | Bows, spears, fire, poison |
| Moder (Mountains) | Iron mace, Draugr Fang with Obsidian or fire arrows | Frostner and silver: immune to frost and spirit |
| Yagluth (Plains) | Frostner, Silver sword, Frost arrows | Pierce (0.25x): atgeirs, spears, plain arrows |
| The Queen (Mistlands) | Mistwalker, sledges, staffs | Pierce (0.5x), spirit (immune) |
| Fader (Ashlands) | Flametal mace, Berserkir axes, Frost arrows | Fire and spirit (immune), pierce (0.5x) |

The pattern: the Black metal atgeir and Splitnir are great for clearing a biome, but take a blunt or slash weapon for the boss.

## How this guide was fact-checked

The weapon picks and their order come from SnazzyGames' video, uploaded 16 January 2026, before Valheim 1.0 launched on 9 September 2026. Every recipe, crafting station level, damage number, parry bonus and creature resistance comes from each weapon's and creature's page on the Valheim wiki (Fandom), plus its blocking, adrenaline, trinket and version history pages. All damage figures are base quality (level 1). Frames are from the video and show each weapon's in-game tooltip.

Corrections and clarifications named in the text:

- "Fists of the bear" is **Paws of the Bear** on the wiki, "staff of the wilds" is **Staff of the Wild**, and the "iolite variant" axes are the **Thundering Berserkir axes**.
- The video recommends the Staff of fracturing against Morgen. The wiki lists Morgen as resistant to blunt and fire and weak to lightning.
- The video calls Skoll and Hati the best knives in the game. That's true only through the Ashlands since 1.0 added Deep North daggers.
- The 15 m and 8 m noise figures for other bows are the video's. The wiki confirms only the Huntsman bow's 4 m.
- The claim that spears level fastest is the creator's experience. The wiki doesn't state it.
- Splitnir is fast but deals pierce, which Charred Warriors and Fader resist. For bosses, this guide follows our boss guides instead.

1.0 changes that affect this list: the 1.0 patch increased durability for Mistlands and Ashlands gear, so this guide leaves out durability (some wiki item tables may still show pre-1.0 values). It also widened Mistwalker's mist clearing. No damage numbers for these weapons changed in the 1.0 notes the wiki lists, up to live patch 1.0.20.

## What this guide doesn't answer

- **Deep North weapons.** The Nord, Frostfire and Thunderblood lines and the four new staffs came with 1.0. They're out of scope for this pre-1.0 source and will get their own Deep North gear guide.
- **Fully upgraded damage.** Each weapon gains damage per quality level. We list level 1 values so the tiers compare fairly.
- **Trinket rankings.** The video points to a separate trinket video. This guide only names the trinkets it pairs with weapons.
- **Armour sets.** Apart from the Fenris set's Fists bonus, armour choices are left to a dedicated armour guide.
- **Crossbows, sledges and battleaxes in detail.** The video doesn't rank them, so we don't either, apart from mentions in the boss table.

## FAQ

### What is the best weapon in Valheim for each biome?

Following SnazzyGames' pre-1.0 ranking: Flint spear (or Club) in the Meadows, Bronze atgeir or Abyssal razor in the Black Forest, Iron mace and Huntsman bow in the Swamp, Flesh rippers (or Silver sword and Frostner) in the Mountains, Black metal atgeir in the Plains, Staff of protection plus Staff of frost or Mistwalker in the Mistlands, and Staff of the Wild or Thundering Berserkir axes in the Ashlands.

### What is the best early weapon in Valheim?

The Flint spear. It is made at a level 1 Workbench from 5 Wood, 10 Flint and 2 Leather scraps, deals 20 pierce per stab or 30 when thrown, and attacks fast. Carry a Club too (6 Wood, 12 blunt) because Skeletons take 1.5x damage from blunt and resist pierce.

### Is Frostner good in Valheim?

Yes, but not in the Mountains where you craft it. Frostner deals 35 blunt, 40 frost and 20 spirit, yet Drakes, Stone Golems and Moder are immune to frost and spirit. It shines from the Plains on: all three damage types hit Yagluth at full value, and Ashlands Charred are weak to spirit.

### What is the best sword in Valheim before the Deep North?

For the Mistlands it is the Mistwalker: 75 slash plus 40 frost, made at a level 1 Black forge from 3 Finewood, 15 Iron, 10 Refined eitr and 3 Wisp. Its frost slows enemies and its glow clears the mist, which the 1.0 patch widened. Krom, the two-handed sword, hits harder at 150 slash per swing.

### What is the best bow in Valheim?

It depends on the stage. The Huntsman bow (42 pierce) is the stealth pick because it makes only 4 m of noise. For raw damage, the Draugr Fang (47 pierce + 5 poison), Spinesnap (72 pierce + 5 spirit) and Ash Fang (82 pierce) follow by biome. Use Frost arrows against Yagluth and Fader, and don't bring a bow to Bonemass.
