## 🎯 The core idea
> Aluminum's self-referencing water loop is the single most-complained-about production chain in Satisfactory, and it's usually not the ratios that trip people up — it's the water. This guide covers three complete aluminum ingot layouts, from the vanilla recipe through the most resource-efficient alternate-recipe build, plus the water balancing trick that keeps a scrap refinery from ever backing up and jamming.

## Layout 1: the vanilla recipe (240 ingots/min)
![Satisfactory overhead factory view showing six constructors arranged in a manifold producing silica at 5.33x constructors overlay](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/08/frame_0065.jpg)
The standard recipe needs 12 coal, 240 bauxite, 120 raw quartz, and 240 water per minute. Turn the 120 raw quartz into silica with a six-constructor manifold (four at 100% clock speed, two at 66.66%), then merge that silica with the silica byproduct from two Alumina Solution refineries running at 100% clock speed on 120 bauxite each. Route the alumina solution and 120 coal into an Aluminum Scrap refinery to get 360 aluminum scrap per minute, then split the scrap and silica across four Foundries for a total of 240 aluminum ingots per minute at a 1:1 bauxite-to-ingot ratio. This is the least efficient of the three layouts since it also needs quartz and coal, but it's the most straightforward to understand.

## Layout 2: the easiest setup (Sloppy Alumina + Pure Ingots)
![Satisfactory first-person view of a blue water pipe junction connected to two refineries with a bauxite conveyor belt running alongside](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/08/frame_0232.jpg)
This layout swaps in two alternate recipes: Sloppy Alumina, which removes silica production entirely, and Pure Aluminum Ingots, which removes the need for silica downstream. That means the whole facility only needs 200 bauxite, 120 coal, and 80 water per minute — no quartz at all. Place the Sloppy Alumina refinery with a pipe junction in front receiving 80 water at 66.667% clock speed, then place the Aluminum Scrap refinery to its left (also facing the same direction, so pipe inputs and outputs line up) to handle the remaining 120 water recycled from its own output. Run the scrap to a six-long smelter manifold producing Pure Aluminum Ingots. This setup yields ingots at roughly 80-90% of the bauxite received depending on exact routing, needs no quartz, and is small enough to blueprint.

## Layout 3: maximum efficiency (1:1 bauxite-to-ingot ratio)
![Satisfactory in-game recipe selection screen showing the Alternate Heavy Oil Residue recipe converting 3 cubic meters Crude Oil into 4 cubic meters Heavy Oil Residue and 2 Polymer Resin at 66.666 percent clock speed](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/08/frame_0397.jpg)
For the most resource-efficient setup, four alternate recipes come together: Heavy Oil Residue, Electrode Scrap, Sloppy Alumina, and Pure Aluminum Ingots. This needs only 200 bauxite, 20 crude oil, and 60 water per minute. Place Sloppy Alumina and Electrode Scrap refineries side by side (Electrode Scrap overclocked to 133.33%), then feed it via a Petroleum Coke refinery at 66.66% clock speed, itself supplied by a Heavy Oil Residue refinery running at 66.667% clock speed on the 20 crude oil. Route the resulting scrap to a seven-smelter manifold (six at 100%, one at 66.67%) to hit a full 1:1 ratio of aluminum ingots to bauxite — the same 200 bauxite in becomes 200 ingots out, using only crude oil and water as the extra inputs.

## The water balancing secret that stops clogging
![Satisfactory Water Extractor interface at 100 percent clock speed showing 120 cubic meters per minute target rate with 240 Aluminum Ingots visible on a nearby sign in the background](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/08/frame_0525.jpg)
Every layout here feeds excess water from the scrap refinery back into the system — if that output backs up and can't clear, the whole facility stops running, which is the most common cause of "why does my aluminum keep jamming." For layouts 2 and 3, the fix is to empty the alumina solution refineries' water buffer when you first set the system up, until all the water is clearing from the scrap refinery's output; after that, the system should run without issue. Layout 1 behaves differently and, according to the video's creator (who says even Satisfactory's own developers weren't aware of this), the refinery's water output is prioritized over new water input, so the system can run indefinitely without sinking excess water or using priority junctions at all — as long as you don't add extra pumps or priority junctions into the mix, which can break this behavior.

## Quick answers: ratios, clogging fixes, and per-minute output
For per-minute planning, the numbers to remember are: layout 1 gives 240 aluminum ingots per minute from 240 bauxite (1:1, but needs coal and quartz too), layout 2 gives roughly 80% ingot yield from 200 bauxite with no quartz needed, and layout 3 reaches a true 1:1 aluminum ingot ratio to bauxite using only crude oil and water as extras. If your aluminum factory layout keeps clogging or the aluminum scrap refinery output stops moving, it's almost always the water loop backing up rather than a ratio mistake — check that guide's water balancing section above before assuming your bauxite or silica math is wrong. This water recycling approach works whether you're troubleshooting an existing sloppy alumina line or building a fresh aluminum casing setup from scratch.

## Quick answers: which layout is best, and what comes after aluminum ingots
If you've seen this metal spelled "aluminium" rather than "aluminum," they're the same material — the in-game item is called Aluminum Ingot regardless of regional spelling. For beginners just unlocking bauxite refinement, layout 1 (the vanilla recipe) is the best starting point since it doesn't require hunting down alternate recipes first, even though it's the least efficient of the three. Once you've got aluminum ingots flowing, the next step for most factories is Alclad Aluminum Sheet, which turns ingots into a key mid-to-late-game construction material — that recipe isn't covered in this guide, but any of the three ingot layouts above will feed it just fine once you're producing a steady surplus.

## How this guide was fact-checked
The Satisfactory Wiki confirms the Sloppy Alumina alternate recipe exactly as shown in the video's own in-game recipe screen: 10 Bauxite (200/min) and 10 m³ Water (200/min) produce 12 m³ Alumina Solution (240/min) in a Refinery. The wiki also confirms the standard Alumina Solution recipe (12 Bauxite + 18 Water → 12 Alumina Solution + 5 Silica) matches the video's layout 1 description. One small precision note: the video states layout 2 produces ingots at "80% of the bauxite received," while the wiki's own efficiency breakdown puts the Sloppy Alumina + Aluminum Scrap + Pure Aluminum Ingot combination at 0.9 Aluminum Ingots per Bauxite (90%) — the wiki's more precise figure is used here since it's a direct, patch-verified ratio, though the video's rounded 80% is still a reasonable rule of thumb for planning purposes. This video is from March 2025 and is explicitly for Satisfactory 1.0; alternate recipe ratios and refinery mechanics referenced here are core, patch-light systems that have not changed since 1.0 released.

## What this guide doesn't answer
This video is focused on production layouts and the water-loop mechanic specifically, not on where to find good bauxite nodes, how to transport aluminum ingots long distances, or how aluminum casing and other downstream products are made — those are treated as separate topics outside this guide's scope.
