This guide covers a complete opening sequence that balances logistics, food supply, storage, defense, and economic development.

## Quick answer

| What | Answer |
| --- | --- |
| Starting scenario | Restoring the Peace |
| First food sources | Mushrooms and fish |
| First buildings | Logging camp, storehouse, granary |
| First militia unit | Spear militia |
| Wood reserve for planks | 20 timber reserve, 50 plank limit |
| Early market size | 2 stalls |
| Chickens per coop | 1 egg per month, 1 chicken every 4 months |

---

## Set up your first settlement

Begin your campaign with the **Restoring the Peace** scenario using default settings, on the **Wide Valley** map. When the game loads, immediately pause to inspect the region before starting construction.

<ol class="checklist">
  <li><label><input type="checkbox"><span class="name">Select Restoring the Peace scenario</span></label>
    <em>Wide Valley map chosen <a class="jump" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9st9jA3Ovq8&t=2s" target="_blank" rel="noopener">0:02 ↗</a></em>
  </li>
  <li><label><input type="checkbox"><span class="name">Pause when entering the game</span></label></li>
  <li><label><input type="checkbox"><span class="name">Examine local food, wood, and mineral deposits</span></label></li>
  <li><label><input type="checkbox"><span class="name">Identify victory condition: claim all opponent regions</span></label>
    <em><a class="jump" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9st9jA3Ovq8&t=119s" target="_blank" rel="noopener">1:59 ↗</a></em>
  </li>
</ol>

## Read the opening resource panel

Your town starts with **five unassigned families**, all homeless (minus 5 living space). **Food** is at three months' reserve, so this is your first urgency. **Fuel** is also at roughly three months, but is not consumed until colder weather arrives. Approval rate (shown above 50% at start) controls the pace at which new families move in, and is separate from **regional wealth** (town funds) and **personal treasury** (your own coin).

![HUD at game start showing all key opening resources and town status for setting priorities.](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/08/01-opening-hud.jpg "HUD at game start showing all key opening resources and town status for setting priorities.")

A quick HUD check helps prioritize immediate needs: housing, food storage, fuel, and job assignment. Town wealth and treasury are primarily used later for trade and hiring troops.

## Claim local food and wood without destroying deposits

Your first step is to secure initial food and wood. For this map, **mushrooms** and **fish** are the best early sources. To avoid destroying valuable food deposits:

<ol class="checklist">
  <li><label><input type="checkbox"><span class="name">Place a gatherer's hut near the mushroom deposit</span></label>
    <em>Mushrooms are collected here <a class="jump" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9st9jA3Ovq8&t=236s" target="_blank" rel="noopener">3:56 ↗</a></em>
  </li>
  <li><label><input type="checkbox"><span class="name">Place a fisherman's hut by the water to access fish</span></label></li>
  <li><label><input type="checkbox"><span class="name">Add a hunting camp only if wild game is present</span></label></li>
  <li><label><input type="checkbox"><span class="body"><span class="name">Position your logging camp away from mushroom deposits</span><br><span class="desc">Logging on top of mushroom patches will destroy the resource.</span></span></label>
    <em><a class="jump" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9st9jA3Ovq8&t=324s" target="_blank" rel="noopener">5:24 ↗</a></em>
  </li>

## Protect supplies and move the ox

**Storehouse** and **granary** buildings protect supplies from spoilage and weather, and logistical efficiency begins with the ox.

<ol class="checklist">
  <li><label><input type="checkbox"><span class="name">Build a storehouse for stone, tools, and firewood</span></label>

  </li>
  <li><label><input type="checkbox"><span class="body"><span class="name">Relocate the hitching post to the logging camp</span><br><span class="desc">The ox will haul logs faster when placed near extraction.</span></span></label>

## Lay out housing and the first market

**Burgage plots** (houses) are drawn along roads and need to be wide enough for backyard extensions. Use a **marketplace** with two stalls to supply residents once two workplace types exist.

<ol class="checklist">
  <li><label><input type="checkbox"><span class="name">Draw burgage plots along roads</span><br><span class="desc">Width controls whether a second family and extension can fit.</span></label>

## Add fish, water, church access, and planks

Expand your infrastructure to meet more needs:

<ol class="checklist">
  <li><label><input type="checkbox"><span class="body"><span class="name">Build a fisherman's hut near the lake or river</span><br><span class="desc">Adds fish to the food supply.</span></span></label>

## Control planks and keep timber in reserve

To avoid running out of wood for construction, set up the **saw pit** with reserves and production caps:

- Reserve 20 timber at the saw pit, ensuring that construction wood is not fully converted to planks.
- Set a plank production limit of 50. This prevents storage overflow and keeps timber available for future expansion.
- One timber produces five planks. As industries grow, raise these limits as needed.

![Saw pit controls for reserving timber and limiting plank production are visible in the advanced settings tab.](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/08/08-saw-pit-settings.jpg "Saw pit controls for reserving timber and limiting plank production are visible in the advanced settings tab.")

This approach prevents overproduction and shortages. Adjust the limits if you plan to add woodworking or construction projects later.

## Use militia and mercenaries to clear bandits

When you reach **town level 2**, you unlock **militia recruitment**. Use spear militia units to clear bandit camps and defend your settlement. Mercenaries are available if you have enough personal treasury gold.

<ol class="checklist">
  <li><label><input type="checkbox"><span class="name">Reach level 2 and receive weapons and shields</span></label>

## Trade firewood and upgrade safely

A **trading post** lets you export and import goods. Early on, trade firewood for wealth; set a desired surplus of about 60 to ensure six months' reserve.

Level 2 house upgrades increase resident needs and can lower approval if demands aren't met. Spending **regional wealth** on chicken coops, backyard extensions that generate eggs and chicken meat, is the best early food upgrade. Each coop costs 20 regional wealth and some planks, producing one egg per month and one chicken every four months. Aim for coops in about a quarter of houses to satisfy animal produce needs.

As your town reaches **medium village** status with some level 2 houses, watch approval ratings and avoid over-upgrading before new industries can support demand. Trade route costs rise with each route, so use villagers for basic exports before investing in routes.

## Also worth knowing

<div class="tipbox alt"><span class="tag">Before you commit</span>

- **Consider additional oxen and hitching posts.** Building a second ox speeds up hauling and construction in the early game, improving efficiency beyond the default setup.
- **Current builds protect food sources in forests.** Extraction buildings no longer destroy mushroom patches or berries as easily, making resource preservation more reliable than in earlier versions.
- **Spoilage and logistics matter for food.** Systems like spoilage and fishing, along with the early tech tree, are key for beginner success. Short routes and efficient storage are critical in preventing food loss.
- **The opening setup is approachable.** Many players find the start sequence easy to follow, making it a strong first game foundation.

## FAQ

### What should I build first in Manor Lords?

Start with a logging camp, then add storage and food handling so resources are protected and workers can move them efficiently. After that, add burgage plots so families can move in and construction can keep going. A forager, fisher, or hunting building should follow as soon as your local food source is identified.

### How do I keep food from spoiling or getting lost early on?

Put a storehouse and granary down early so supplies move out of the open. Keep food production close to the source, then connect it to the market so houses can receive it. Weather and distance both matter, so short hauling routes are much safer.

### What is the best early backyard extension?

Chicken coops are the strongest early choice because they generate eggs every month and chicken every fourth month. They also help cover the animal produce need for houses. One coop can support a meaningful part of a young settlement.

### How do I make planks without running out of timber?

Set the saw pit to reserve timber for construction and cap plank production so it does not consume everything. A reserve of 20 timber and a production cap of 50 planks is a solid early setting. That keeps building materials available while still producing enough planks for upgrades.
