# LoL Wave Management: Freeze, Slow Push and Crash

> Every minion wave moves because of two forces: minion count and how close the fight is to a turret. This guide shows how to use them to crash, slow push, freeze or hold a wave, and what Season 2026's earlier spawns and faster late waves change.

## 🎯 The core idea

> Every minion wave moves for two reasons: which side has more minions (size) and which turret the fight is closer to (location). Balance those two and you choose the wave state: crash it when you need time, slow push when you want trades and lane control, freeze or hold it near your turret to deny CS. Season 2026 adds earlier spawns and faster, smaller waves after 14:00.

free costs nothing

cheap small cost

setup needs preparation

## What actually moves a minion wave

![Slide showing the two forces behind wave states in League of Legends: size of the wave and location of the wave](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0012_jcRrEdW.webp)

free Wave management in LoL starts with one question: which way is this wave going to drift if nobody touches it? Coach Mysterias explains it with two forces.

- **Size.** The side with more minions wins the minion fight and pushes forward. One extra minion is enough to start a slow push.
- **Location.** When the clash happens closer to one team's turret, that team's next wave arrives first and starts hitting before the other side's reinforcements show up, so the wave pushes away from that turret.

His slide also mentions a third, smaller factor: minion type and level. The wiki confirms there is a real mechanic behind it. From 3:30 the team with the higher average champion level gets a minion pushing buff, so its minions deal more damage to enemy minions and take less from them, and the buff grows with turrets destroyed in that lane. A level lead quietly makes your wave stronger.

Size and location can work together (bigger wave, near the enemy turret: it crashes fast) or against each other (smaller wave, near your turret: it stays put). That second case is what every freeze and held wave is built on. Wave control in League of Legends is mostly the skill of deciding which of these two forces to feed.

## Pushing by size versus pushing by location

![Pushing by location example: equal minion waves fighting closer to Orianna's turret in mid lane](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0070_cMkXE5G.webp)

free The video shows the two pushes side by side. In the first, the waves are the same distance from both turrets but Orianna's side has one more minion, so it slowly pushes. In the second, the minion count is even, but the fight sits closer to Orianna's turret. Her reinforcements walk a shorter distance, arrive earlier, and the wave slow pushes toward red side anyway.

The League of Legends Wiki describes the same rule in its wave strategy notes: a wave that catches up with the wave in front of it starts pushing, and the lane pushes whenever one side's minions deal more damage than they take. This is the whole reason you can push without touching a minion: just let the location do it.

A useful habit: before you decide anything, glance at the two waves and count. "We have 4, they have 6, and we're in the middle" tells you the wave is coming to you, whatever you do in the next few seconds.

## Wave states explained: the quick reference

![Frozen wave state diagram where size and location forces cancel out in League of Legends](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0090_v7kccDH.webp)

free This is how the size and location forces add up to the wave states League of Legends players talk about. The frozen example in the video is the one where the two forces cancel out exactly.

| Wave state | Size and location | Use it when | Main cost |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Hard push (crash) | Kill everything as fast as possible | You want to recall, roam, help an objective or dodge a gank | Spends cooldowns, gives up trades, the enemy can hold or freeze the next wave |
| Slow push | Slight minion advantage, wave in the middle | Nothing is happening on the map for 30 to 40 seconds and you want trades | Leaves you further from your turret while it builds |
| Freeze | Enemy wave a bit bigger, held near your turret | You want to deny CS or play safe against a stronger laner | Hard to keep, ties you to the lane |
| Neutral | Even size, even location | You're not sure what's next and want to keep options | Minor damage swings it either way |
| Held wave | Even size, wave just outside your turret | You want trades while the enemy is forced to farm near you | Needs you to tank or body block minions |

The [ranked climb guide](/guides/lol-ranked-climb-guide) uses the same states to decide when to leave lane; this guide is about setting them up.

## When to push the wave hard and crash it

![Hard push slide listing resets, tempo and gank threat as reasons to crash the wave](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0130_BcyV0tO.webp)

cheap A hard push means killing the whole wave as fast as possible so it crashes into the enemy turret. The video's slide lists three reasons: resets, tempo for plays on the map, and avoiding the lane when you're under gank threat. In his example the coach is about to be ganked by Pantheon, so he clears the wave instantly to avoid needing to stand near minions and walks away.

The cost is on the same slide: you spend your cooldowns, you give up trading windows, and you risk the enemy holding or freezing the next wave against you.

**How to crash a wave cleanly:**

- Use abilities on the casters first, they are the minions that keep your wave alive longest.
- Crash on a cannon wave whenever you can. The extra cannon minion makes the wave hit the turret harder and lets you hit plates.
- Since Season 2026 turret plating no longer falls off at 14:00, so a crashed wave can take plates all game. Each plate gives 120 gold, and [the Season 2026 changes guide](/guides/lol-season-changes-guide) covers why inner turrets now have five plates as well.

When to push the wave in LoL comes down to this: crash it when you know what you will do with the next 30 seconds. If you don't have a plan for that time, don't spend your cooldowns.

## How to slow push in League of Legends

![Slow push slide: build a small minion advantage for lane control and trades](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0172_qmMbVKf.webp)

setup A slow push is the coach's default and probably the strongest wave state in the game. You push toward the enemy, but slowly, because nothing on the map needs you right now. The wave builds a minion advantage as it goes, which gives you three things:

- **Better trades.** More of your minions means more minion damage on the enemy if they fight you near the wave. The wiki puts minion damage against champions at 60% since patch 26.01 (it was 55% when the video was made), so an extra few minions really do add up.
- **Free trading windows.** You last hit your own minion first, then the enemy still has to last hit theirs. That moment is when you use an ability or an auto on them.
- **Lane control.** A slow push turns into a hard push whenever you want. If a fight starts at Dragon, you shove, then walk.

The goal is a slight minion advantage, not a big one. If the wave gets too large it hard pushes and crashes without you choosing the timing.

## How to freeze in LoL and deny CS

![Freeze slide: hold 3 to 4 minions on your side of the lane to deny the enemy resources](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0240_FOCc9qy.webp)

setup A freeze keeps the wave in one spot near your turret. It can be used defensively (the enemy has to walk up to you to trade) or offensively, as in the video, to zone the enemy away from minions and experience.

**How to freeze:** keep 3 to 4 more enemy minions than allied minions on your side of the lane, just outside your turret range, and only last hit. Watch both forces:

- If the enemy wave gets too big, it pushes into you and crashes under your turret.
- If the enemy wave gets too small, the location pushes it back toward the enemy.

That is also how to deny CS: an opponent who walks up to farm a frozen wave is far from their turret and close to your jungler. Minion experience is shared with all champions within 1,500 units of the minion's death, so an enemy kept outside that range loses experience as well as gold.

The coach calls the freeze rare in the current game, and his slide adds that it has been harder to manage since Season 15. That matches the wiki: in early 2025 minions started dealing bonus damage to each other, which makes waves clear and push faster, and the level-based pushing buff above makes a frozen wave break as soon as the enemy team out-levels yours. Treat a freezing wave in LoL as a short-term tool, not a plan for the whole lane.

## The neutral wave and why it creates trades

![Neutral wave state slide: the most flexible wave with the most trading windows](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0278_SiVmFDl.webp)

free A neutral wave has even size and sits in the middle. It goes nowhere on its own, which makes it the most flexible state: from neutral you can push, hold or let it come to you. The coach's rule: if you're not sure what to do, keep the wave neutral.

Neutral waves also have the most trading. Lots of minions die at once, both sides have to step up to last hit, and both laners can punish the other. His slide notes the downside: a small bit of damage from either side tips it, so a neutral wave doesn't stay neutral for long without attention.

## The held wave: a slow push next to your turret

![Held wave slide: hold one or two minions just outside your turret in mid lane](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0300_ms5QVgP.webp)

setup The coach calls the held wave "a glorified slow push". To set it up you hold one or at most two minions just outside your turret's range. The waves are the same size, but the location is close to your turret, so the wave very slowly pushes out toward the enemy.

In the video's Syndra versus Akshan example, Akshan keeps walking up to clear the minions, and Syndra times her abilities on his last hits. He loses health on every CS, can't extend a trade because he's farming next to her turret, and the wave slowly builds into a real slow push for her.

- Tank or body block the minions so they don't walk into turret range, that's how you keep the hold.
- If the enemy doesn't walk up, they lose minions instead. Either result is good for you.
- skip Letting the wave slip into your turret. Once the turret starts shooting minions, you lose the hold and the enemy gets a free crash.

## Season 2026 wave timings and cannon waves

![First wave at 1:22 game time in a 2025 game, before the 2026 minion spawn change to 0:30](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0470_hfJBpTM.webp)

free The video was recorded in August 2025, before Season 2026. The wave fundamentals in it are unchanged, but the clock is different, and that matters for cannon wave timing in LoL.

- **First wave:** in the video the coach says to be in the middle of the lane at 1:25 to hit the first minions. Patch 26.01 moved the first minion spawn to 0:30 from 1:05, so the first wave meets about 35 seconds earlier now.
- **Faster, smaller waves later:** since 26.01, waves spawn every 25 seconds from 14:00 (one fewer melee minion on waves that carry a cannon) and every 20 seconds from 30:00 (one fewer caster minion on every wave).
- **Cannon waves:** the first cannon minion now comes with the third wave at 1:30, not the fourth.

The current wiki numbers, which also match the [ranked climb guide](/guides/lol-ranked-climb-guide):

| Game time | Waves spawn every | Cannon (siege) minion | Average gold per wave |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 0:30 to 14:00 | 30 seconds | 3rd wave (1:30), then every 3rd wave | about 119 |
| 14:00 to 25:00 | 25 seconds | every 2nd wave | about 115 to 122 |
| 25:00 to 30:00 | 25 seconds | every wave | about 148 |
| 30:00 onward | 20 seconds | every wave | fewer casters per wave |

What this changes in practice: a crashed side wave comes back toward you sooner after 14:00, so a mid-game freeze has to be re-managed more often, and a side lane you leave alone piles up faster. With a 30-second gap and a cannon every third wave early on, the classic reset plan still works: crash the cannon wave, then recall.

## Getting the minion advantage you need

![Viktor dragging minion aggro by trading with Ryze to slow push the wave](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0560_dbxHkbl.webp)

free Players often say "I can't get the push". The coach's fixes, all shown in his Viktor versus Ryze game:

- **Auto more.** The first champion to start hitting minions usually gets the slow push. Be in the middle of the lane when the first wave arrives.
- **Kill one enemy minion early.** Every enemy minion that dies is one less minion hitting yours.
- **Trade to drag minions.** Hit the enemy champion so their minions turn on you, then step back. Their minions stop hitting your wave and follow you toward your side, which also moves the location in your favour.
- **Stop when you have it.** Once the slow push is building, he deliberately autos less. Too much damage turns the slow push into a crash.
- **Stand outside the wave against AoE mages.** Against Xerath, standing inside your minions lets his W hit you and the wave at once.

The aggro trick is backed by the wiki's Call for Help rules: minions switch to an enemy champion who damages an allied champion with a basic attack or most targeted abilities, and minions that have a target only switch to a higher-priority one. Patch 26.10 removed the old rule where attacking an enemy minion could also draw aggro, so hitting minions alone no longer pulls the wave onto you. You need to hit the champion.

## High-value abilities: hit the wave and the champion

![Viktor E high-value ability hitting both the minion wave and the enemy laner](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0650_PdPpKuh.webp)

cheap A high-value ability hits both the enemy champion and the minion wave. In the video, Viktor's E goes through the wave and hits Ryze. He needs to crash the wave so he can recall, and he gets a free poke in the same cast instead of choosing between them.

Use them when the enemy is contesting the wave. If the enemy is sitting back and not touching minions, just auto attack a little and save the ability. Spending your cooldown on minions only isn't efficient.

The mirror point matters too: don't stand inside your wave when the enemy has a high-value ability ready.

## The two-wave cycle

![Syndra crashing the second wave into the enemy mid turret during a two-wave cycle](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0690_R7xspbr.webp)

setup The final and most advanced pattern in the video is a two-wave cycle:

1. Slow push the first wave in the middle of the lane. Trade on every enemy last hit.
2. Push the second wave a bit faster so it crashes into the turret. Harass the enemy while they last hit under their turret.

The trick is what happens next. If you simply crash two waves, the next wave often stops right in front of the enemy turret, where your opponent farms safely. Instead, the coach makes the next wave settle closer to the middle, either by taking aggro on the enemy minions or by crashing the second wave a little faster. A wave in the middle forces the enemy to step up for every CS, and the cycle starts again.

This is where every earlier tool comes together: you need the slow push, the crash and the aggro trick to do it well.

## Wave bounce and how to reset the wave

![Coach marking where the next minion wave should land after crashing in mid lane](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0735_pmjF2wb.webp)

free A wave bounce is what happens after a crash. Your minions die to the turret, the enemy's next wave arrives with nothing to fight, and the wave pushes back toward your side. That's the standard result of the size and location rules above, and it's why crashing then recalling works: you come back with items and the wave walking toward you instead of away.

**How to reset the wave:** crash it fully into the enemy turret, then recall or roam. If you crash it badly and leave a few minions alive, the enemy can hold or freeze the next wave against you, which is exactly the risk the video lists for a hard push.

If you're losing the lane, letting the enemy crash a wave into your turret resets the lane for you too. Last hitting under turret is a skill worth knowing: the wiki notes that melee minions can take two turret shots before one champion attack finishes them, and caster minions need one attack, one turret shot, then one more attack.

## Wave management by lane: top, mid and ADC

![Syndra trading in mid lane while managing the wave at four minutes](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0100_2kuE1Qz.webp)

grind The rules are the same in every lane, but the priorities change.

| Lane | What you usually want | Watch out for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Top | Freezes and slow pushes; the long lane makes a freeze near your turret very punishing for the enemy | Before 14:00 side lane minions get a speed boost after spawning, so top and bot waves arrive faster than mid early on |
| Mid | Slow pushes and crashes for roams; the short lane resets quickly | Crashing without a plan, since mid waves come back to the middle fast |
| Bot (ADC) | Slow pushes and cannon-wave crashes that line up with Dragon at 5:00 | Two enemy champions can punish a freeze attempt much harder than in a solo lane |

Wave management for top lane is where freezing pays the most, wave management for mid lane is about tempo for roams, and wave management for ADC is about pushing at the right time with your support.

In Season 2026 farming also feeds your role quest: each minion in your own lane is worth 2 quest points for top and mid and 3 for bot, and plates are worth 40, as explained in the [role quests guide](/guides/lol-role-quests-guide). A lane where you manage waves well finishes its quest earlier.

LoL wave management for beginners should start with just two states: slow push when nothing is happening, crash when you want to recall. Add the freeze and the held wave once those feel natural. This minion wave guide works the same way in solo queue and normal games, since it's all lane management.

## How this guide was fact-checked

- **Source:** "The Ultimate Wave Management Guide for League of Legends" by Coach Mysterias, uploaded on 16 August 2025, before Season 2026. The wave states, the held wave, the slow push tricks, the high-value ability and the two-wave cycle come from the video's own explanations, slides and gameplay.
- **League of Legends Wiki, Minion page:** wave spawn times (0:30 first spawn; every 30, 25 and 20 seconds from 0:30, 14:00 and 30:00), cannon minion schedule, fewer melee and caster minions in late waves, average gold per wave, minion pushing buff from 3:30, Call for Help and target priority rules, 1,500-unit experience range, 60% minion damage to champions, and the patch history (26.01 wave changes, 26.10 aggro change, 25.S1.1 minion bonus damage).
- **League of Legends Wiki, Turret page:** five plates per lane turret, 120 gold per plate, plating no longer removed at 14:00, and the under-turret last-hit pattern.
- **Corrections to the video:** the first wave arrives about 35 seconds earlier than the 1:25 the coach uses, because the first spawn moved to 0:30 from 1:05 in patch 26.01. The first cannon now spawns on the third wave, not the fourth. After 14:00 waves spawn every 25 seconds with fewer melee minions, and every 20 seconds after 30:00, none of which existed when the video was made. Minion damage to champions is now 60%, not 55%.
- Recent patch notes (26.19 to 26.21) were checked for wave or minion changes; none affect what this guide describes. Role quest point values come from our role quests guide, which was checked against the wiki.

## What this guide doesn't answer

- **Champion-specific wave clear.** How fast each champion pushes depends on their kit and items; check a champion guide instead.
- **Jungle tracking and gank timing.** When to crash because of the enemy jungler is covered in the ranked climb guide, not here.
- **Side lane macro after laning.** Who catches which side wave in the mid game is a team macro topic.
- **Exact meeting times for each lane's first wave.** The wiki lists spawn times, not travel times, so this guide gives only the change compared with the video.
- **ARAM and other modes.** Howling Abyss has its own minion rules; everything here is about Summoner's Rift.

## FAQ

### What is wave management in League of Legends?

Wave management is controlling where the minion wave sits and which way it drifts. Two forces decide it: size (the side with more minions pushes) and location (the side whose turret the fight is closer to gets reinforcements first and pushes). By feeding or cancelling those forces you choose to crash, slow push, freeze, hold or keep the wave neutral.

### How do you freeze a wave in LoL?

Keep the enemy wave slightly bigger than yours, about 3 to 4 extra enemy minions, just outside your turret range, and only last hit. If the enemy wave grows too big it crashes into your turret; if it gets too small it pushes back out. Freezes are harder to keep since 2025 because minions deal bonus damage to each other and the team with a level lead gets a minion pushing buff from 3:30.

### How do you slow push in League of Legends?

Build a slight minion advantage in the middle of the lane: start hitting minions before your opponent, kill one enemy minion early, and trade with the enemy champion so their minions turn on you. Once the push is building, auto less so it doesn't turn into a crash. A slow push gives you trading windows on every enemy last hit and lets you crash and roam whenever you want.

### When should you crash a wave in LoL?

Crash (hard push) when you have a plan for the next 30 seconds: recalling, roaming, joining an objective fight or avoiding a gank. Crash on a cannon wave when possible. In Season 2026 the first cannon comes with the third wave at 1:30, then every third wave until 14:00, every second wave until 25:00, and every wave after. Crash fully, because a half-crashed wave lets the enemy freeze the next one.

### Did wave timings change in Season 2026?

Yes. Patch 26.01 moved the first minion spawn to 0:30 from 1:05, so the first wave meets about 35 seconds earlier than in 2025 videos. Waves spawn every 30 seconds until 14:00, every 25 seconds from 14:00 with one fewer melee minion on cannon waves, and every 20 seconds from 30:00 with one fewer caster. Turret plates also no longer fall off at 14:00.
