## 🎯 The core idea

> Viego is a crit skirmisher who wins fights by chaining kills. Every champion takedown drops a Mist Wraith; attack it to heal, steal that enemy's kit and items for 10 seconds, and get a free ultimate. Clear safely, avoid early invaders, gank when a lane is already low, and enter fights second so there is always a body to possess. Numbers below are from patch 26.21.

free costs nothing

cheap small cost

setup needs preparation

grind pays off slowly

skip the thing to stop doing

This Viego guide starts from LolElekktro's video "Everything You NEED to Know About Viego in Season 16", uploaded on 6 January 2026, the week patch 26.1 went live. The video is a pre-season forecast: it explains the crit changes, picks two new items and predicts how the 2026 jungle changes would affect Viego. Those opinions are credited to the video below. Ability numbers come from the official League of Legends Wiki, and every Viego change since January comes from Riot's patch notes up to 26.21. Viego got two buffs after the video was made. The video says Season 16; Riot calls this year Season 2026, and our [Season 2026 changes guide](/guides/lol-season-changes-guide) covers the system changes.

If you are new to the role, read our [LoL jungle guide](/guides/lol-jungle-guide) first; this page assumes you know camps, pets and Smite. It uses the same jungle champion guide format as our [Lee Sin guide](/guides/lol-lee-sin-guide), so it also works as a Viego beginner guide: kit first, then build, clear, ganks and fights.

## Viego's kit and possession in patch 26.21

![Viego fighting enemy champions at the Voidgrub pit at 10:08 in a ranked game](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0070_ekHnWIk.webp)

Viego is a melee, manaless jungler. His abilities cost nothing, so you never have to back for mana. His base stats in 26.21 are 630 health (+109 per level), 57 attack damage (+4 per level since 26.18), 0.658 attack speed (+2.75% per level since 26.2), 345 movement speed and 200 attack range.

| Ability | Key numbers (patch 26.21) | What it does |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Passive: Sovereign's Domination | Mist Wraith lasts 8 s; possession lasts 10 s | Take part in a champion kill within 3 s of hitting them and a Mist Wraith spawns. Attack it to blink onto it (1 s, untargetable except to turrets), heal and possess that champion |
| Q: Blade of the Ruined King | 5–3 s cooldown, 600 range, 25/40/55/70/85 (+70% AD) | Passive: autos deal 2–6% of the target's current health (capped at 80 vs monsters). Active: a stab that marks enemies; your next auto on a marked target hits twice and heals you |
| W: Spectral Maw | 8 s cooldown, 300 → 900 range by charge, 80–300 (+100% AP) magic damage | Charge for up to 1 s, then dash and fire a blast that stuns the first enemy for 0.25–1.25 s |
| E: Harrowed Path | 14–6 s cooldown, mist lasts 8 s | Sends a spectre that leaves a trail of mist, spreading wider along any wall it hits. In the mist you get 30–50% attack speed, plus 25–35% movement speed and camouflage while you are not attacking |
| R: Heartbreaker | 120/100/80 s cooldown, 500 range, 0.5 s cast | Blink to a spot and hit the most wounded champion for 12/16/20% (+5% per 100 bonus AD) of missing health plus 120% AD; other enemies are knocked back |

The Viego possession heal is 2% of the target's maximum health, plus 2.5% per 100 bonus AD, 2% per 100 AP, 0.4% per 100 bonus health and 5% per 100% bonus attack speed. The bonus health part was added in 26.18. While possessing, you have the enemy's basic attacks, basic abilities, items and ability ranks, and a free Heartbreaker after 1.5 seconds. You keep your own Summoner spells, runes and trinket. You cannot use the enemy's item actives or the shop, and your base stats stay at your own level.

That last point corrects the video. It says that if Viego kills a level 20 top laner he can "be a level 20 top laner". The wiki says possession uses the enemy's base stats scaled to Viego's level. You do get their items and their ability ranks, which is still a big gain when your own levels are behind.

## Viego combos for skirmishes

![Viego's Spectral Maw stunning an enemy during a river skirmish at 7:48](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0030_CD5saXR.webp)

free Viego combos are short because every ability marks the target for Q's double strike. The rule: cast one ability, then auto attack before casting the next one, so each mark gets used.

- **Gank or skirmish opener:** E toward the wall near the target so you walk in camouflaged, W charged in the mist, Q, auto, then R once the target is low enough for the missing-health damage. W resets your auto attack timer, so W then auto is always free damage.
- **Short trade:** Q, auto (double strike and heal), W, auto. Back off before the enemy can trade back.
- **Reset combo:** on a kill, attack the Mist Wraith right away, use the possessed kit, then cast the free Heartbreaker on the next low target. Casting R ends the possession, so only do it when R will kill or save you.

You can cast any ability during the W dash, and R cast during the dash goes to its full range from the end of the dash. That makes W into R the longest gap-closer Viego has. The video's footage shows this kind of fight: Viego's W stuns one target while his team catches another in a river skirmish at 7:48.

## Season 2026 crit changes: what the video got right

![Patch 26.1 notes on screen: critical strike damage increased to 200%](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0022_3Iprqpn.webp)

The first half of the video explains the crit changes in patch 26.1. Base critical strike damage went from 175% to 200% for every champion, and Riot gave crit users compensation nerfs. The video's summary is accurate: Viego's Q and R lost crit scaling, while his auto attacks gained from the higher base crit damage. According to the 26.1 patch notes:

- Q's current-health on-hit now crits for 50% of bonus crit damage, down from 100% of total.
- Q's second strike crits for 100% of bonus crit damage, so it keeps the full 26.1 buff.
- Q's active and R both scale with crit chance less, and now also scale with only part of your bonus crit damage.

The video also says Riot first planned a bigger Viego nerf and softened it after complaints. Riot's patch notes don't mention a pre-release version, so treat that as the creator's account. His conclusion, that this was a delayed power shift that hurts before your third item, matches what Riot did next.

## Viego changes since the video: 26.2 and 26.18

![Video caption on Viego's 26.1 changes: crit scaling reduced on Q and R, auto attack crits do more damage](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0058_50IAqe0.webp)

free Two Summoner's Rift balance changes have landed since the upload. Both were buffs:

- **26.2:** Riot said Viego was "performing worse this season" and returned some crit scaling. Attack speed growth went from 2.25% to 2.75% per level, Q's on-hit crit modifier from 50% to 70% of bonus crit damage, and Q's active crit modifier from 50% to 60%.
- **26.18:** after his win rate dropped, attack damage growth went from 3.5 to 4 per level, and the possession heal gained +2% of the target's maximum health per 500 bonus health. Riot named his "more bruisery alt build" as part of the reason.

The other 2026 Viego lines in the patch notes are bug fixes. On Summoner's Rift, 26.10 fixed Kled remount health, Evelynn charm putting W on cooldown, and Q and W cooldown bugs with Zaahen and Mordekaiser. 26.16 fixed Viego taking his target's boots through the bot lane role quest. The fixes in 26.6, 26.7, 26.11, 26.15 and 26.18 involving King Me, Icathia's Fall, Dashing and Ultra Hydra are ARAM: Mayhem only, and the Prismatic item cost fix in 26.11 is Arena only. Patches 26.19, 26.20 and 26.21 did not change Viego.

## Viego runes, skill order and Summoner spells

![Viego in a skirmish near the Voidgrub pit at 10:02 in a ranked game](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0064_jC4LsIw.webp)

The video doesn't cover runes, so this section uses an OP.GG snapshot of ranked Viego jungle games on patch 26.21 (the site labels it 16.21). Two rune pages are almost equally common:

| Page | Pick rate | Runes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Conqueror | 43.6% | Precision: Conqueror, Triumph, Legend: Alacrity, Coup de Grace. Inspiration: Magical Footwear, Cosmic Insight |
| Hail of Blades | 41.1% | Domination keystone with Precision secondary |

Shards on both pages: attack speed, adaptive force, scaling health. Conqueror is the safer Viego runes choice for longer fights and the bruiser build. Hail of Blades makes your early ganks hit harder. Hail of Blades was changed twice this year: 26.9 added bonus true damage, and 26.16 cut melee attack speed from 120% to 90%.

**Skill order:** start Q, then W at level 2 and E at level 3. Max Q first, then E, then W, and take R at 6, 11 and 16 whenever you can. That is the most common OP.GG order (38% of games). LoLalytics' highest-win-rate order at level 15 maxes W second, so W second is fine if you want longer stuns for ganks.

**Summoner spells:** Flash and Smite in 99.95% of games. Start with Gustwalker Hatchling, the most common pet on OP.GG, because its movement speed helps a champion that wants to reach lanes fast.

## Viego build 2026: Kraken Slayer, Collector or Essence Reaver

![Essence Reaver tooltip from the video showing 2900 gold, 55 AD, 20 ability haste and Spellblade](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0105_amC33gp.webp)

setup The video's Viego build: Kraken Slayer first, then Essence Reaver instead of the usual The Collector. Its reasoning is that Collector only shines when you are ahead. Essence Reaver went back to a crit Sheen item in 26.1, and Viego wants a Spellblade proc after every ability, even though he has no mana for it to restore. The tooltip in the video shows 2,900 gold and 55 AD. The live wiki lists Essence Reaver at 3,050 gold with 50 attack damage, 20 ability haste and 25% crit chance.

Players on 26.21 did not adopt the video's pick. In the OP.GG snapshot, Essence Reaver isn't in any of the top core builds:

| Core build (OP.GG, patch 26.21) | Share | Win rate |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Kraken Slayer → The Collector → Immortal Shieldbow | 30.5% | 53.8% |
| Kraken Slayer → The Collector → Lord Dominik's Regards | 12.0% | 54.9% |
| Hubris → The Collector → Lord Dominik's Regards | 8.5% | 54.0% |

Common fourth and fifth Viego items are Lord Dominik's Regards, Infinity Edge, Immortal Shieldbow, Death's Dance and Guardian Angel. For boots, Plated Steelcaps (52%) or Mercury's Treads (39%) depending on the enemy damage.

Item notes from the wiki: Kraken Slayer (3,000 gold) gives 45 AD, 40% attack speed and 4% move speed, and every third attack deals bonus damage that rises against low-health targets. The Collector (3,000) executes champions below 5% health and gives 25 bonus gold per kill. Immortal Shieldbow (3,000) shields 400–700 when you drop under 30% health, which is often what keeps you alive through the Mist Wraith wind-up. Our pick for the best Viego build in LoL right now is the Kraken–Collector core most players use. Try the video's Essence Reaver second item when your team needs you to keep fighting instead of executing.

## Lord Dominik's Regards against tanky teams

![Lord Dominik's Regards tooltip: 3300 gold, 35 AD, 35% armor penetration, Giant Slayer up to 15%](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0130_A3Vc9a3.webp)

cheap The video's second item call is right too: patch 26.1 added Giant Slayer back to Lord Dominik's Regards. The tooltip in the video matches the live wiki: 3,300 gold, 35 AD, 35% armor penetration, 25% crit chance, and up to 15% bonus damage against champions based on their bonus health, maxing out at 1,500 bonus health. That is 200 gold more than before, as the video says.

Buy it second or third when the enemy has two or more tanks or bruisers. Q's current-health damage helps early, but it shrinks as targets lose health, so armor penetration and Giant Slayer are what let you kill a full-health tank later. If the enemies are squishy, keep Collector and buy Dominik's later or skip it.

## Viego clear and jungle path

![Viego clearing a jungle camp early in the game](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0195_aRUPXm8.webp)

grind The video calls Viego's clear speed "middle of the pack". For the fastest Viego clear, use his double strike: on each camp, cast Q or W, auto to use the mark, then cast the next ability. The second strike heals 125% of its damage against monsters, so Viego stays healthy through a full clear. Q's passive does current-health damage, but against monsters it is capped at 80 per hit. Use E in the jungle for attack speed, not for movement: attacking a large monster blocks the mist's camouflage and move speed for 2 seconds.

A standard Viego full clear starts at a buff (camps spawn at 0:55, Gromp and Krugs at 1:07) and goes through all six camps on one side and then the other. That ends near the Scuttle Crab at 2:55 or near a lane that can be ganked. Start on the side of the lane you plan to gank first, and avoid starting on the side where the enemy jungler can invade you. For the Viego jungle path, the general jungle pathing rules in our [jungle guide](/guides/lol-jungle-guide) apply: your pet evolves at 15 treats into Unleashed Smite (1,000 damage) and at 35 into Primal Smite (1,400).

## Early invades and how the 2026 jungle changes help Viego

![Video caption: Viego's biggest weakness is early invades](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0150_RPAeM2c.webp)

skip The video names early invades as Viego's biggest weakness. Before he gets a kill, his early dueling is average, and it names Kindred, Bel'Veth, Talon and Graves as junglers who beat him early. Don't fight for your second buff against those champions at level 2 or 3 unless your laners are already moving to help.

The video predicted that 2026 would mean fewer invades. Part of this needs a correction. The video says camp timers went from 1:30 to 50 seconds. The 26.1 notes and the wiki put first camp spawns at 0:55, which is 35 seconds earlier than in 2025. The idea still holds: with camps up that early, there is very little time to ward and walk into the enemy jungle at level 1. Clearing also takes longer since your pet does only 10% bonus damage to monsters, down from 25%. That makes a failed invade more costly.

## Viego ganks: when to leave the jungle

![Viego landing a 390 damage hit on a side lane gank at 19:44](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0090_B0mtnrz.webp)

setup Viego ganks work best on lanes that are already low or have no escape spell. R's damage depends on missing health and Q's on current health, so a gank on a full-health target needs W's stun to land. Walk in through the mist from Harrowed Path: if the spectre hits a wall it spreads mist along both sides, and you are camouflaged and faster while you aren't attacking.

Good Viego gank windows:

- Level 3 after a short clear, with W ready and the laner at least half health.
- Level 6, when Heartbreaker can finish a target that Flashes away.
- Any 2v2 or 3v3 where an enemy is about to die. A kill there gives you a possession, and the possession often turns into a second kill.

The rest of how to gank (angles, pings, when to farm instead) is in our [jungle guide's ganking section](/guides/lol-jungle-guide). Our [Thresh guide](/guides/lol-thresh-guide) shows the support's side: a Thresh lantern or hook is one of the easiest gank setups to follow up on as Viego.

## Viego teamfight resets: possessing the right target

![Viego hitting an enemy turret during a killing spree](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0215_YDqGGgd.webp)

setup Viego teamfight resets decide whether you win the late game. Each kill gives you a heal, a full kit, a free Heartbreaker and 10% move speed toward enemies, so a well-played fight turns into a chain. Viego tips for fights:

- **Enter second.** Let your front line take the first crowd control, then go in on whoever is already low.
- **Pick the right body.** Possess a carry with range or a tank with crowd control. Don't automatically take the first Wraith if the champion is useless in the current fight.
- **Watch the wind-up.** The 1-second blink to a Mist Wraith makes you untargetable, but not to turrets. Don't consume a Wraith under an enemy turret.
- **Save R as the finisher.** Heartbreaker targets the most wounded champion in range, and casting it ends possession. Use it to start your next chain, not as an opener.
- **Health stays as a percentage.** Viego keeps his current health percentage when he changes form, so possessing a tank doesn't restore health; only the heal does.

In the clip in this section, Viego takes a turret during a killing spree. The Collector's extra 25 gold per kill and the gold from turrets make that kind of snowball more likely.

## Viego matchups and counters

![Video caption: Viego always has a place in the meta](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0230_n3XvM6n.webp)

free The video's last point is that "Viego always has a place in the meta", and the stats back that up. Viego is one of the most-played junglers on 26.21: OP.GG shows an 8.45% pick rate, 6.62% ban rate and 49.2% win rate. LoLalytics puts him at 50.8% in Emerald+, B+ tier.

Stats sites disagree on Viego matchups because many of the samples are small, so read this table as a trend, not a rule:

| Source (patch 26.21) | Viego counters (harder matchups) | Easier matchups |
| --- | --- | --- |
| LoLalytics, Emerald+ | Rek'Sai, Darius, Elise | Diana, Karthus, Volibear |
| OP.GG, all ranks | Rammus, Ivern, Pantheon, Kha'Zix, Elise | Trundle, Volibear, Skarner, Teemo, Ambessa |
| The video (pre-season) | Kindred, Bel'Veth, Talon, Graves early | Junglers that need slow early invades |

The common pattern in the counters LoL players report: strong early duelists and champions who stop his reset chains (Rammus taunts, Elise's stun) beat him. Junglers that farm slowly and don't contest him early let him reach his items.

## Jungle economy in 2026 and Viego's place in it

![Video caption on 2026 jungle: slower clears, less XP than top and mid, less gold than ADC](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0245_gERQYGE.webp)

grind The video lists three downsides of the 2026 jungle: slower clears, less experience than top and mid, and less gold than the ADC. Those match the 26.1 changes our [jungle guide](/guides/lol-jungle-guide) covers. Top laners can now reach level 20 with their role quest. Junglers take 50% damage from non-epic monsters but kill camps more slowly.

The video expected two things to soften this for Viego. First, possession gives him enemy items and ability ranks even when he is behind in levels; see the kit section for the correction about base stats. Second, it expected his percent-health damage to help on objectives. Epic monsters in 2026 are 10–35% tougher, mostly through added armor and magic resist, and Q's current-health damage is capped at 80 per hit against monsters. So Viego is a decent objective taker but not an exceptional one. Smite and your pet deal true damage, so take Dragon and Voidgrubs with your team when you can.

## How this guide was fact-checked

- **From the official League of Legends Wiki:** Viego's base stats, all five abilities (cooldowns, ranges, damage, possession rules, Mist Wraith timing, heal formula, Q's 80 monster cap, E's camouflage rules), his patch history, and the current stats of Kraken Slayer, The Collector, Immortal Shieldbow, Lord Dominik's Regards, Essence Reaver, Infinity Edge, Guardian Angel, Hubris, Death's Dance and Gustwalker Hatchling.
- **From the official patch notes 26.1 to 26.21:** 26.1 (200% crit damage, Viego Q and R crit changes, Essence Reaver and Lord Dominik's changes, jungle changes), 26.2 and 26.18 (Viego buffs), 26.9 and 26.16 (Hail of Blades), and the Viego bug fixes in 26.10 and 26.16. The ARAM: Mayhem and Arena entries in 26.6, 26.7, 26.11, 26.15 and 26.18 are labelled as mode-only above. Patches 26.19–26.21 have no Viego changes.
- **From the video (LolElekktro, 6 January 2026):** the Kraken Slayer into Essence Reaver build, the Lord Dominik's call, the view of crit as a delayed power shift, early invades as his main weakness with Kindred, Bel'Veth, Talon and Graves named, and the expectations for 2026 jungle. Tooltips shown in the video were compared to the wiki.
- **From stats sites (patch 26.21, labelled 16.21 on the sites):** runes, skill order, Summoner spells, pet, core builds, boots, pick, ban and win rates and the matchup lists from OP.GG and LoLalytics.
- **Corrections to the video:** first camps spawn at 0:55 (35 seconds earlier), not "50 seconds"; possession gives enemy items and ability ranks but uses base stats at Viego's own level; Essence Reaver now costs 3,050 gold with 50 AD, not the 2,900 and 55 in the video's tooltip; epic monsters are tougher mostly through resistances, and Viego's Q current-health damage is capped at 80 per hit against monsters; Viego was buffed in 26.2 and 26.18 after the video.

## What this guide doesn't answer

- **Possession tips for every champion:** possession works differently for over 170 champions (and has many champion-specific bugs listed on the wiki), so we only cover the general rules.
- **Pro play builds:** pro Viego builds follow team plans and a different meta, so this guide uses ranked solo queue data only.
- **ARAM, ARAM: Mayhem and Arena Viego:** those modes have their own balance changes, augments and items.
- **Exact jungle route timings:** clear times depend on runes, pet and skill, so we give the route logic rather than a stopwatch.
- **Detailed matchup-by-matchup advice:** with small samples on most matchups, a short table is more honest than a long list.

## FAQ

### What is the best Viego build in patch 26.21?

Most ranked Viego players on patch 26.21 build Kraken Slayer, then The Collector, then Immortal Shieldbow (about 30% of games on OP.GG, 53.8% win rate). Swap the third item for Lord Dominik's Regards against tanky teams. LolElekktro's video suggests Essence Reaver as the second item instead of Collector. It is a valid pick for longer fights, but it is not in the most common builds yet. For boots, buy Plated Steelcaps or Mercury's Treads.

### What runes should I take on Viego jungle?

Two pages are almost equally popular on 26.21. Conqueror with Triumph, Legend: Alacrity and Coup de Grace, plus Magical Footwear and Cosmic Insight, is the safer choice for long fights. Hail of Blades with a Precision secondary hits harder in early ganks. Shards on both are attack speed, adaptive force and scaling health.

### How does Viego's possession work?

If you take part in a champion kill within 3 seconds of hitting that champion, a Mist Wraith spawns for 8 seconds. Attack it to blink onto it (1 second, untargetable except to turrets), heal for a share of the target's maximum health and possess them for 10 seconds. You get their basic attacks, basic abilities, items and ability ranks plus a free Heartbreaker. Base stats stay at your own level, and you keep your own runes and Summoner spells.

### What is Viego's skill order?

Start Q, then W at level 2 and E at level 3. Max Q first, then E, then W, and take R at 6, 11 and 16. This is the most common order on OP.GG for patch 26.21. Maxing W second is also fine if you want longer stuns for ganks.

### Who counters Viego in the jungle?

Strong early duelists and champions that stop his reset chains are the hardest for Viego. On patch 26.21, LoLalytics lists Rek'Sai, Darius and Elise as his worst matchups in Emerald+, and OP.GG adds Rammus, Ivern, Pantheon and Kha'Zix. The video warns about early invades from Kindred, Bel'Veth, Talon and Graves. Viego does well against slow farmers like Karthus, Diana and Volibear.
