# Thresh Guide: Hooks, Lantern Tricks, Combos and Build

> Thresh wins fights with one good hook, Flay or lantern. This guide covers his kit with patch 26.21 numbers, the combos to learn first, the Aftershock runes and Locket build, and how to lane against enchanters, engage and poke supports.

## 🎯 The core idea

> Thresh wins games with one good decision per fight: a hook or a Flay that starts it, or a lantern that saves the carry who is about to die. Learn what each ability actually does in patch 26.21, practice two basic combos until they are automatic, keep collecting souls, and play every lane around the threat of your hook instead of throwing it at the first target you see.

free costs nothing

cheap small cost

setup needs preparation

skip the thing to stop doing

## Why play Thresh support in 2026

![Why play Thresh slide: pros (always strong, strong engage, strong disengage, lantern equals life) and cons (skillshot reliant)](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0010_Bk4nVK7.webp)

free Thresh is a catcher support: he has engage (Death Sentence, his hook), disengage (Flay) and a way to pull an ally out of danger (Dark Passage, his lantern). The video from 3 Minute League of Legends sums up his strengths as always strong, strong engage, strong disengage and "lantern equals life". His weakness is that most of his value depends on landing skillshots, and doing a bit of everything means he is never the best at any single job.

That mix is why he stays popular. On op.gg's patch 26.21 snapshot (Ranked Solo/Duo, Emerald and above, labelled 16.21 on the site) Thresh support had a 15.4% pick rate and a 51.8% win rate. Riot's own 26.17 notes say he had been "quietly sitting at a high winrate" all year, which is why his Flay damage was cut.

As a Thresh beginner guide, the honest advice is this: he is not the easiest support to learn, but his mistakes are readable. A missed hook means a 19-second cooldown at level one, so you learn quickly to throw it only when the target can't dodge. If you are new to the role, read the [support guide](/guides/lol-support-guide) first for how your support item and quest work, then come back here for the Thresh-specific parts.

## Damnation: how Thresh souls work

![Thresh Damnation passive tooltip in the Practice Tool: souls grant armor and ability power](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0018_OMEPavo.webp)

grind Thresh's passive is the reason he scales into the late game without farming. Per the official League of Legends Wiki:

- Enemy champions, large minions and large monsters that die near Thresh drop a soul that lasts 8 seconds. Small minions and small monsters have about a 33% chance to drop one, which the game adjusts so the total stays near the expected quota. Epic monsters drop 2.
- Each soul gives Thresh 1 ability power and 1 bonus armor, permanently.
- Thresh gains **no armor from levels**. His base armor is 33 at level 1 and still 33 at level 18, so souls are his armor growth.
- Souls are collected automatically when you walk near them, or when they are near your placed lantern. Throwing the lantern on a soul you can't safely walk to still collects it.

The video gets this right, including the detail about armor. The practical habit: after every wave you push and every fight, look for the green soul markers and pick them up. Thresh souls also add to his W shield (2 per soul) and his Flay passive (1.7 magic damage per soul), so a 60-soul Thresh is a very different champion from a 15-soul Thresh.

## Death Sentence: Thresh hook tips that actually matter

![Thresh hooking a target dummy with Death Sentence (Q), stunned status shown above it](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0036_oWZoluP.webp)

setup Death Sentence (Q) is a 1100-range skillshot. In patch 26.21 it deals 100 / 150 / 200 / 250 / 300 magic damage (+90% AP) and costs 70 mana, with a cooldown of 19 / 16.5 / 14 / 11.5 / 9 seconds. On hit it stuns and reveals the target for 1.5 seconds, tugs them toward Thresh twice, and takes 2 seconds off its own cooldown. The video calls this "a small amount", and 2 seconds is the exact number from the wiki.

While the target is shackled, Thresh is slowed by 20% for 1 second and can't start attacks, which is the video's "during this time he can't attack". After 0.5 seconds (instantly if you hooked a minion or monster) you can recast Q for **Deathly Leap**, a dash to the hooked target. You can cast your lantern and Flay during that dash.

Hook tips that make the difference:

- **Throw at targets that can't move.** An enemy who is auto-attacking a minion, channeling, already slowed by Flay or locked in another ally's crowd control can't sidestep. A hook into a target walking freely at max range is a coin flip.
- **Don't always recast.** Hooking someone does not mean you have to go in. If your ADC isn't ready, let the tugs pull them closer and stay where you are. That still gets you a free stun and the cooldown refund.
- **Hold the threat.** In lane, a Q that is off cooldown is worth more than a Q you just missed. The enemy has to respect it, and they stop walking up for last hits.
- **Thresh flash hook:** the wiki lists Flash as disabled while Death Sentence is being cast, so you can't Flash mid-hook. Flash first, then throw Q immediately. Flash closes the range and the target has no time to react to the new angle.

## Dark Passage: Thresh lantern tricks

![Thresh throwing his Dark Passage lantern (W) with the lantern range circle visible](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0050_WgfY2wW.webp)

free Dark Passage (W) throws the lantern up to 950 units. It stays for 6 seconds as long as Thresh stays close, and gives vision around it. Thresh and the first ally to come near it get a shield of 50 / 70 / 90 / 110 / 130 (+2 per soul) for 4 seconds. An ally who clicks it is pulled to Thresh and also gets the shield. Its cooldown is 21 / 20 / 19 / 18 / 17 seconds. The video describes all of this accurately.

Thresh lantern tricks worth practicing:

- **Save a carry, not a fight.** Throw the lantern toward the ally who is about to die, not into the middle of a fight. Your teammates need a moment to click it, so throw it early, before they are stunned. The wiki notes that an immobilized, grounded or silenced ally can't take it.
- **Lantern ganks.** When your jungler waits in the river brush, throw the lantern to them and step forward. When you land a hook or Flay, they click and arrive on top of you. Ping it first so they know it's coming.
- **Dash targets.** The lantern counts as a unit, so allied dashes and teleports can use it. The wiki lists Teleport, Jax's Leap Strike, Katarina's Shunpo and Lee Sin's Safeguard. A [Lee Sin](/guides/lol-lee-sin-guide) can W to your lantern to reposition for an insec.
- **Hook, leap, lantern.** Cast W during Deathly Leap and throw it back toward your team. You land on the target and your ADC or bruiser can click in after you.
- **Collect souls and shield yourself.** Lantern on a soul picks it up. If you walk out of the lantern's leash range, Thresh gets its shield himself.

One counter to know: enemies can place a ward on top of your lantern so your allies click the ward instead. If that happens, ask them to click the edge of the lantern.

## Flay: the Thresh flay passive and knockback

![Thresh casting Flay (E) and knocking a target dummy back along the sweep](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0064_VkAs40F.webp)

free Flay (E) has two parts. The passive makes Thresh's basic attacks deal bonus magic damage: 1.7 per soul, plus up to 90 / 120 / 150 / 180 / 210% AD as the charge builds over **10 seconds** without attacking. The video's "charges up over 10 seconds" is right. The active sweeps a broad line that starts behind Thresh (550 units) and reaches in front of him (525 units), dealing 65 / 110 / 155 / 200 / 245 magic damage (+60% AP), knocking enemies 200 units in the direction you aim and then slowing them by 20–40% for 1 second.

Aim toward you to pull an enemy in (a "flay in"), or away from you to push them off your carry (a "flay out"). The video's example: flaying an enemy into your ultimate.

Two changes since the video was uploaded (16 July 2026):

- **Patch 26.17** cut Flay's active damage from 75–255 (+70% AP) to 65–245 (+60% AP). The video's on-screen Flay damage is from before this nerf.
- **A 26.15 hotfix (29 July)**, per the wiki's patch history, fixed a bug where Flay's passive reached its maximum damage after only about half a second instead of the full charge time. The video's host says the passive "is actually a ton of damage". It still is when fully charged, but you now need to wait the real charge time between autos to get it.

Flay is also your answer to dashes. The wiki notes the active is a knockback that briefly makes targets airborne, and that displacement interrupts most dashes. A Thresh who holds E for the enemy engage is a nightmare for Leona or Alistar.

## The Box: Thresh's ultimate

![Thresh casting The Box (R): five spectral walls around him in a pentagon](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0070_i9CToWP.webp)

setup The Box (R) creates five spectral walls in a pentagon around Thresh for 5 seconds. The first wall an enemy champion breaks deals 250 / 400 / 550 magic damage (+100% AP) and slows by 99% for 2 seconds. After that, other walls deal no damage and slow for only 1 second. Its cooldown is 120 / 100 / 80 seconds and it costs 100 mana.

The video describes it as a pentagon with five walls that break and slow on contact, which matches the wiki. Three ways to use it:

- **Catch follow-up.** After a hook, put the target inside the Box (or flay them into a wall) so they can't walk out of your team's damage.
- **Zone a fight.** In a teamfight, cast it between enemy divers and your carry. They have to accept a near-root to walk through.
- **Escape.** When you are chased, the Box slows whoever reaches you first. The cast can't be interrupted, even by your death.

## Thresh combos for lane and teamfights

![Thresh full engage combo shown on screen: Q, R, E, auto attack, W](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0084_2MC7d3a.webp)

setup The video teaches two Thresh combos, and they are the right two to learn first:

| Combo | Inputs | When |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Lane trade | Auto, E, Q, Auto | The target is in auto range. Flay slows them, so the hook can't miss at short range |
| Full engage | Q, R, E (into a Box wall), Auto, W | You landed a long-range hook and your team can follow |

In the full engage, you hook, Box the target as you arrive, flay them into a wall to trigger the slow, attack, and throw the lantern to whichever teammate needs to move or needs a shield. Note that the video's on-screen label for the lane combo reads "W" over the Flay icon. The narration and the icon both show E, which is correct.

The video adds one rule: if you run Aftershock, make sure its explosion lands. Aftershock triggers when you immobilize an enemy champion and detonates 2.5 seconds later in a 350-unit radius around you, so stay close to your target for that time.

Two combos from the wiki that build on these:

- **Q, recast, E backwards.** You can cast Flay during Deathly Leap. Leap to the target and flay toward your team as you land, which throws them toward your carries instead of away.
- **Flash, E.** Flash is disabled while Flay is being cast, so Flash first, then Flay. Flashing behind a target and flaying them toward your team is a classic Thresh engage when your hook is on cooldown.

## Thresh matchups and counters

![Thresh matchup chart from the video: easier and harder support opponents](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0103.webp)

free The video's matchup advice is about types, not names. Thresh is good into engage supports, because Flay interrupts their dash and he can punish them afterwards. He struggles against long-range bully supports who poke him from beyond hook range.

The on-screen chart puts Leona, Alistar and Pyke on the "easier" side, and Brand and Vel'Koz on the "harder" side. The third icon on the harder side is drawn as an ability icon that we couldn't identify reliably, so we don't name it.

For Thresh counters lol players look up, the op.gg patch 26.21 snapshot (Emerald and above) lists these, with small samples, so treat them as a hint and not a ranking:

| Thresh's hardest | Win rate | Thresh's easiest | Win rate |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Hwei | 43.1% (123 games) | Sylas | 65.2% (241 games) |
| Galio | 46.2% (197 games) | Ashe | 64.0% (125 games) |
| Brand | 46.6% (489 games) | Yuumi | 58.6% (1,038 games) |
| Amumu | 47.0% (164 games) | Pantheon | 57.9% (738 games) |
| Rell | 47.9% (980 games) | Elise | 56.4% (188 games) |

The common pattern in the hard group: mages who outrange you (Hwei, Brand) and tanks whose engage beats yours (Galio, Rell, Amumu). Brand appears in both the video and the stats. Against them, stand behind your minions, use brush control and keep Flay for their engage.

## Thresh runes: Aftershock and the Resolve tree

![Thresh rune page: Aftershock, Font of Life, Bone Plating, Overgrowth, Biscuit Delivery, Cosmic Insight](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0106_J9V2hNC.webp)

cheap The video's rune page ("The Thresh Prince"):

| Slot | Video's choice | op.gg 26.21 most popular page |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Keystone | Aftershock | Aftershock |
| Resolve | Font of Life, Bone Plating, Overgrowth | Font of Life, Bone Plating, Unflinching |
| Inspiration | Biscuit Delivery, Cosmic Insight | Biscuit Delivery, Cosmic Insight |
| Shards | Adaptive Force, Adaptive Force, Health Scaling | Adaptive Force, Adaptive Force, Health Scaling |

The only difference is the third Resolve rune. The stats page favors Unflinching over the video's Overgrowth. Both are fine. Overgrowth gives you more health as minions die around you, while Unflinching pays off in long crowd-control fights.

What the runes do, per the wiki in patch 26.21:

- **Aftershock:** immobilizing an enemy champion gives you 45 (+75% bonus) armor and magic resist for 2.5 seconds, then deals 25–120 (+8% bonus health) magic damage around you. Cooldown 20 seconds. Patch 26.11 raised the flat resists from 35 to 45, so it's slightly stronger than in older guides.
- **Font of Life:** slowing or immobilizing an enemy champion heals you and the most wounded ally nearby.
- **Bone Plating:** after enemy damage, the next 3 hits from that champion deal less damage.
- **Biscuit Delivery:** biscuits at 2:00, 4:00 and 6:00, each adding 30 max health when used.
- **Cosmic Insight:** 18 summoner spell haste and 10 item haste.

Aftershock fits Thresh because Q, E and R all immobilize or knock up. Any of them starts the 2.5-second timer.

## Best Thresh build in 2026

![Thresh build order icons: World Atlas, potion, Locket, boots, Solstice Sleigh, Knight's Vow, Zeke's and situational items](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0115_mvtLtNo.webp)

cheap The video's Thresh build 2026 order: start **World Atlas and Health Potions**, rush **Locket of the Iron Solari**, buy **tier two boots** (the icon shown is Boots of Swiftness), then upgrade your support item to **Solstice Sleigh**. After that, **Knight's Vow** and **Zeke's Convergence**, and finish with situational items. The video's last row shows three icons we read as Thornmail, Bandlepipes and Frozen Heart.

The op.gg 26.21 snapshot agrees almost item for item. The most common core is Locket of the Iron Solari, Knight's Vow and Zeke's Convergence, Boots of Swiftness is the top boots pick, and Solstice Sleigh is the most bought support upgrade.

| Item | Why on Thresh (from the wiki, patch 26.21) |
| --- | --- |
| Solstice Sleigh | Slowing or immobilizing a champion gives you and the most wounded ally 20% decaying move speed and 50–230 bonus health |
| Locket of the Iron Solari (2,200 gold) | Shield of 290–360 for every ally within 850 units |
| Knight's Vow | Tether a carry: you take 14% of the damage they take |
| Zeke's Convergence | Your ultimate starts a 5-second frost storm that slows enemies by 30% |
| Thornmail | Grievous Wounds against auto attackers |
| Bandlepipes | Slowing or immobilizing a champion gives nearby allies 20–30% attack speed |
| Frozen Heart | Cripples the attack speed of enemies within 700 units by 20% |

How the support item fits: World Atlas pays 18 gold per charge since 26.16, and the support quest turns it into Bounty of Worlds, which upgrades for free into Solstice Sleigh. Until level 5, minion kills outside bot lane give supports 33% less gold and experience, so don't wander off to farm. The [support guide](/guides/lol-support-guide) covers the quest numbers in full.

This best Thresh build lol players use is "tank with ally shields". If the enemy team is all mages, swap Thornmail for a magic resist item. If you are far ahead, more Locket-style team items beat personal damage.

## Thresh skill order and summoner spells

![Thresh skill order slide: Q, E, W at levels 1 to 3, then max Q, E, W](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0120_HbFFp7Q.webp)

free The video's skill order: **Q at level 1, E at 2, W at 3**, then max **Q, then E, then W**, with R at 6, 11 and 16. op.gg's most common order in 26.21 is the same (Q, E, W, then Q max).

The video's host adds that as a Thresh main he likes starting E. It's easier to land at level one than a hook, and the charged passive deals real damage. Starting E is a fine choice into melee supports who want to walk up to you, but against ranged mages a level 1 Q is more threatening.

Summoner spells: **Flash and Ignite**, in both the video and the stats snapshot (57.5% of Thresh games). Flash enables Flash hook and Flash Flay, and Ignite turns your level 2 and 3 trades into kills. Exhaust is a reasonable alternative against assassins or hyper-carries who dive your ADC.

## Thresh laning against enchanters, engage and bullies

![Thresh aiming Flay in bot lane during the laning phase](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0148_pp6BemE.webp)

free Thresh laning depends on who you face, and the video splits it into three cases:

- **Against enchanters** (Soraka, Sona, Yuumi type), play aggressively. Walk up, land Flay and follow with the full combo. They can't stop it and can't trade back.
- **Against hard engage** (Leona, Nautilus, Alistar type), stay closer to your carry and flay them off when they jump in. This is the lane where holding E pays off most.
- **Against bully supports** (long-range mages), take control of the brush and threaten with max-range Qs. You don't need to land the hook. Standing in brush with Q ready stops them from walking forward to poke.

Otherwise, stack your support item charges and keep taking short trades. Thresh can also execute minions with his support item like any support, as long as your ADC is nearby.

Thresh tips for lane vision: your Control Wards sit in the Role Quest slot, so they don't take an item slot, and they cost 75 gold until your support quest is done (40 after). A Control Ward the enemy kills gives them 30 gold, so place it in the tri-brush or river brush where you can protect it. Hook threat is much stronger when the enemy can't see you in the brush. The [warding guide](/guides/lol-warding-guide) covers placement and sweeping.

## Mid game: take the tower, then roam

![Thresh rotating to the Dragon pit with his team as Dragon spawns in the mid game](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0155_P8Yx625.webp)

setup The video's mid-game plan is simple: take your bot tower as soon as you can and rotate to mid. This is where Thresh shines. He has a hook to pick off enemies, a lantern to bring the jungler in, and no farm requirement.

In the frame above, Thresh moves to the dragon pit with his team just as Dragon spawns. Good roams look like that: arrive with your jungler before the objective, sweep and ward the entrances, and look for a hook on whoever comes to check. Pick roam targets that are isolated and out of position. A hook on a tank who walks forward first is often a wasted cooldown.

By this point you are usually past level 5, so the outside-bot gold and experience penalty no longer applies to your roams.

## Late game: engage or peel

![Thresh in a late-game teamfight with his ultimate and lantern around his carries](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0176_K8WLpiQ.webp)

setup In late teamfights you do one of two jobs, the video says: engage for your team or peel for your carries.

- **Thresh engage:** when your team is ready to fight, a Q or Flay into your ultimate is a strong way to start it. Make sure your team can follow before you leap. Allies with airborne follow-up get extra value: Death Sentence and Flay both make the target briefly airborne, which is what a [Yasuo](/guides/lol-yasuo-guide) needs for Last Breath.
- **Peel:** if the enemy team engages on you, stay closer to your carries. Use Q, E and R to zone the divers and keep W to help your carry reposition when they are caught.

For synergies, the video says Thresh works with almost anyone, but especially carries who can follow up his crowd control or help him land it. The icons shown are Jinx, Miss Fortune, Ashe, Twitch and Vayne. Ashe's arrow sets up a hook, Miss Fortune's ultimate punishes enemies slowed in your Box, and Jinx and Vayne kill anyone you catch.

## How this guide was fact-checked

- **From the official League of Legends Wiki (Thresh page, patch 26.21):** Thresh's base armor and no armor growth, soul drops and their values, Death Sentence (damage, 1100 range, 1.5-second stun, 2-second cooldown refund, recast rules, Flash disabled during the cast), Dark Passage (range, duration, shield values, who can use the lantern and how), Flay (passive charge time and values, active damage, knockback and range), The Box (wall duration, damage, slow), and the items and runes listed (Aftershock, Font of Life, Bone Plating, Biscuit Delivery, Cosmic Insight, Solstice Sleigh, Locket, Knight's Vow, Zeke's, Bandlepipes, Thornmail, Frozen Heart).
- **From the official patch notes (26.1 to 26.21):** the only Summoner's Rift Thresh change this year is the 26.17 Flay damage cut. The Thresh changes in 26.15, 26.19 and 26.20 are for Arena and ARAM: Mayhem only. Aftershock's resists went up in 26.11. Support item gold (18 per charge) and the outside-bot penalty are from 26.16.
- **From the video (3 Minute League of Legends, uploaded 16 July 2026):** the combos, rune page, build order, skill order, summoner spells, matchup chart and synergy picks are the video's choices. Item and champion names on the chart slides are read from icons.
- **From op.gg (patch 26.21, shown as 16.21, Ranked Solo/Duo, Emerald and above):** pick and win rates, the most popular rune page and build, skill order and matchup win rates. This is a stats snapshot and will move each patch.
- **Corrections and updates to the video:** Flay's active damage is lower since 26.17. The wiki records a 26.15 hotfix fixing a bug where Flay's passive reached its maximum after about half a second. The lane combo's on-screen "W" label is over the Flay (E) icon. The stats site prefers Unflinching over the video's Overgrowth. The video's era is called "Season 16" by some players and sites; Riot calls it Season 2026.

## What this guide doesn't answer

- **Every matchup in detail.** Support matchups change with each patch and ADC pairing, so we give the types and a stats snapshot rather than a full matchup list.
- **Thresh in ARAM: Mayhem or Arena.** Both modes have their own Thresh changes this year (souls, lantern and ultimate), which don't apply on Summoner's Rift.
- **Skins and lore.** Not relevant to playing him well.
- **Exact hook angles and practice drills.** These are easier to learn in the Practice Tool than from text.
- **Pro play builds.** Pro teams use Thresh differently from solo queue, and the stats here are solo queue only.

## FAQ

### What is the best Thresh build in 2026?

In patch 26.21 the common Thresh build is World Atlas and potions, Locket of the Iron Solari, Boots of Swiftness, then the free Solstice Sleigh upgrade after the support quest, followed by Knight's Vow and Zeke's Convergence. Finish with Thornmail, Bandlepipes or Frozen Heart depending on the enemy team. The video's build and the op.gg 26.21 snapshot agree on this core.

### What runes should Thresh take?

Aftershock with Font of Life, Bone Plating and Overgrowth or Unflinching in Resolve, plus Biscuit Delivery and Cosmic Insight from Inspiration, with Adaptive Force, Adaptive Force and Health Scaling shards. Aftershock fits because Thresh's Q, E and R all immobilize, and since patch 26.11 it gives 45 base armor and magic resist.

### What are the best Thresh combos?

Learn two first. In lane: auto attack, Flay (E), Death Sentence (Q) while they are slowed, then auto again. For a full engage: Q, recast to leap, The Box (R), Flay them into a wall, auto attack, then throw the lantern (W) to a teammate. For a Flash hook, Flash first and then Q, because Flash can't be used while the hook is being cast.

### How do Thresh souls work?

Enemy champions, large minions and large monsters that die near Thresh drop a soul for 8 seconds, small minions about a third of the time, and epic monsters drop two. Each soul gives 1 ability power and 1 bonus armor permanently, plus 2 shield on his lantern and 1.7 damage on his Flay passive. Thresh gains no armor from levels, so souls are his only armor growth.

### Who counters Thresh support?

Long-range poke mages and tanks with stronger engage give Thresh the most trouble. The op.gg patch 26.21 snapshot lists Hwei, Galio, Brand, Amumu and Rell as his hardest matchups, and the video also names Brand and Vel'Koz. Against them, stay behind your minions, control the brush and keep Flay ready to interrupt their engage.
