# Best League of Legends Champions for Beginners by Role

> The easiest League of Legends champion for each role, picked for simple kits rather than tier lists: Malphite, Amumu, Annie, Ashe and Soraka, with two backups per role. Every kit was checked against the official wiki through patch 26.21; none has been reworked since the source video.

## 🎯 The core idea

> The easiest champion in each role is the one whose whole kit does its job even when you play it imperfectly: Malphite top, Amumu jungle, Annie mid, Ashe bot and Soraka support. Each has one clear win condition, forgiving abilities and team value that never goes away. Every kit below was checked against the official wiki on patch 26.21: none of the fifteen champions has been reworked since the source video, only rebalanced.

free costs nothing

cheap small cost

setup needs preparation

grind pays off slowly

skip the thing to stop doing

## How these picks were chosen

![League of Legends role assignment screen with Malphite, Amumu, Annie, Ashe and Soraka placed on their lanes](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0805.webp)

This list ranks beginner friendly champions by kit simplicity, not by the current tier list. A tier list changes every two weeks; whether a champion has a point-and-click stun or a must-hit skillshot does not. The source is a December 2025 video by Vars, who picks one "easiest" champion per role and two honorable mentions, judged on mechanics rather than macro. We kept his picks, checked every ability against the wiki, and added what changed in 2026.

If you are asking "what champion should I play" in your first weeks, the answer is: one pick from this table for your main role and one for your secondary, then stop switching. These are the lol starter champions we would hand any new player, and the list works as well for returning players as it does for new players.

| Role | Easiest pick | Backups | Why it is easy |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Top | Malphite | Garen, Mordekaiser | Point-and-click Q, a shield that refills on its own, an ultimate that wins fights |
| Jungle | Amumu | Warwick, Rammus | Two stored stun-dashes, AoE clear, the biggest ultimate radius on the list |
| Mid | Annie | Lux, Malzahar | Guaranteed stun every few casts, no skillshots needed |
| ADC | Ashe | Sivir, Miss Fortune | Every auto slows, W hits almost anything in front of you |
| Support | Soraka | Janna, Leona | Heal, silence and a global ultimate with one real skill check |

cheap Most of them are also the cheapest champions to own. The wiki lists 11 of these 15 at 225 Blue Essence, the lowest store tier (Malphite, Garen, Amumu, Warwick, Annie, Lux, Ashe, Sivir, Miss Fortune, Soraka, Leona). Mordekaiser, Rammus and Janna are listed at 675, and Malzahar is more expensive; trust the price your client shows. If you are hunting the best free champions in lol, check the free rotation first: per the wiki, accounts below summoner level 11 get their own beginner rotation, separate from the weekly one everybody else sees, and its list changes over time.

Once you have a champion, the role guides cover what the kit cannot: [How to Jungle](/guides/lol-jungle-guide), [How to Play Support](/guides/lol-support-guide), [Role Quests Explained](/guides/lol-role-quests-guide) and, when you start ranked, the [ranked climbing plan](/guides/lol-ranked-climb-guide).

## Top lane: Malphite

![Malphite Unstoppable Force tooltip in Practice Tool with two target dummies knocked airborne](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0165_fbomZc8.webp)

Malphite is the best top lane champion for beginners because almost nothing in his kit can be misused. Granite Shield, his passive, gives him a shield worth 10% of his maximum health that refills after a few seconds without taking damage, so simply stepping back between trades resets him. Seismic Shard (Q) is point-and-click: it deals magic damage, slows the target for 3 seconds and gives Malphite the movement speed it took away, which makes it a poke tool, a chase tool and an escape at once.

Against the auto-attack fighters that fill top lane, Thunderclap (W) gives passive bonus armor that is tripled while Granite Shield is up, and Ground Slam (E) cripples nearby enemies' attack speed by 30-50% for 3 seconds. That is why the video calls him close to unlosable against physical damage. His weak spot is the opposite case: tanks and mages that deal magic or percent-health damage.

Unstoppable Force (R) is the reason he is always useful. It dashes up to 1,000 units, cannot be knocked out of the dash, and knocks up everyone in the landing zone for 1.5 seconds. Hit two or three enemies and your team usually wins the fight.

**2026 change:** the practice-tool tooltip in this frame shows the old ultimate cooldown of 130/105/80 seconds. Patch 26.02 raised it to 130/115/100, cut Ground Slam's base damage to 60-200 and lowered Thunderclap's damage to monsters to 180%. The kit and the advice are the same; he just has his ultimate a little less often.

## Top lane backups: Garen and Mordekaiser

![Mordekaiser and Garen champion art side by side as top lane backup picks](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0195_2efRCMA.webp)

Both backups are "stat checkers": a lot of power and durability is built into the kit, and the combo is the same every game.

**Garen beginner notes.** Garen's passive, Perseverance, regenerates a slice of his maximum health whenever he has not been hit by champions, turrets or epic monsters for 8 seconds, so he heals between trades without buying anything. Decisive Strike (Q) cleanses slows, speeds him up and silences the target with the next attack; Courage (W) blocks damage; Judgment (E) spins. Demacian Justice (R) deals true damage that grows with the target's missing health, which makes him the most dangerous champion on the map against anyone at half health or lower. Patch 26.14 lowered its base damage to 125/200/275 (from 150/250/350); the missing-health part (25/30/35%) is unchanged, so the ultimate is still an execute, just later.

**Mordekaiser.** His ultimate, Realm of Death, pulls one enemy champion into a separate arena for 7 seconds, where nobody else can help them, and steals a share of their stats. Patch 26.20 shortened its cooldown to 120/110/100 seconds and buffed his Q. Inside the realm the fight is simply your stats against theirs, which is exactly what makes him easy.

## Jungle: Amumu

![Amumu Curse of the Sad Mummy tooltip in Practice Tool showing the 1.5 second stun](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0300_vOKI1wg.webp)

Jungle has the highest barrier to entry of any role, because pathing, timers and objectives matter more than the champion. Among the best jungle champions for beginners, Amumu asks the least of your hands, so you can spend your attention on the map.

Bandage Toss (Q) is the only real skill check. It reaches 1,100 units, stuns the first enemy hit for 1 second and pulls Amumu to them, and he stores up to two charges, so a missed first throw still leaves a second. Patch 25.18 made it recharge faster (16 down to 12 seconds by rank) and set its cost to 50 mana. After the stun, turn on Despair (W), which burns everyone nearby for a share of their maximum health, and press Tantrum (E) for area damage; Tantrum also reduces physical damage Amumu takes and comes back faster when he is hit by basic attacks.

Curse of the Sad Mummy (R), the ultimate in this frame, stuns every enemy within a 550-unit radius for 1.5 seconds. That radius is larger than Malphite's 325, which is the video's point when it calls Amumu's ultimate even stronger in team fights, though Amumu has no dash attached. His passive, Cursed Touch, makes cursed enemies take 10% bonus true damage from incoming magic damage, so he shines next to AP teammates like Annie or Lux. grind If you land roughly four out of five Q's, you have mastered the champion.

None of Amumu's abilities changed in 2026. For camp timers, pathing and Smite, read [How to Jungle](/guides/lol-jungle-guide).

## Jungle backups: Warwick and Rammus

![Rammus rolling in with Powerball during a jungle gank on Summoner's Rift](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0383.webp)

**Warwick jungle for beginners.** Warwick's plan is to keep hitting one target until it dies. His passive deals bonus magic damage on every attack and heals him when he is below 50% health (much more below 25%). Blood Hunt (W) lets him sense any enemy champion below 50% health anywhere on the map and leaves a trail leading to them, plus big attack speed against low targets. The main skill checks are following those trails and landing Infinite Duress (R), a long leap that suppresses the first champion hit for up to 1.5 seconds. The video argues jungle Warwick is easier than top-lane Warwick, because top lane needs sharper use of W pressure. Patch 26.09 raised his passive's on-hit damage; nothing else changed.

**Rammus** (shown here rolling in) has some of the most direct ganks in the game: roll in with Powerball (Q), taunt someone with Frenzying Taunt (E) and turn on Defensive Ball Curl (W). The video says his newer ultimate makes him a budget Malphite. Per the wiki that needs a correction: Soaring Slam (R) on its own deals damage and slows for 1.5 seconds; it only knocks enemies up when you cast it during Powerball. Cast it mid-roll to get the Malphite-style engage. His ultimate dates from the 25.12 gameplay update, before the video. In 2026 he only got number changes, the latest in 26.21, when W's bonus armor and magic resist were lowered.

## Mid lane: Annie

![Annie summoning Tibbers in a lane fight on Summoner's Rift](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0455_7LHwjTO.webp)

Mid lane rewards skillshots and roaming more than other lanes, so the best mid champions for beginners are the ones that skip the skillshots. Annie is the clearest example and the reason "annie beginner lol" searches are so common.

Her passive, Pyromania, gains a stack every time she casts a spell. At 4 stacks she becomes Energized, and her next Disintegrate (Q), Incinerate (W) or Summon: Tibbers (R) stuns everyone it hits for 1.25-1.75 seconds depending on level. She starts each game, and each respawn, already at full stacks. The only real decision is which spell carries the stun: Q is point-and-click on one target, W is a cone and Tibbers is a circle, so W or R can stun several enemies at once. If you panic and press everything, the stun still comes out on whatever lands first.

Molten Shield (E) shields Annie or an ally and Tibbers, and gives a burst of movement speed to close the gap. Tibbers, in this frame, keeps burning nearby enemies after he lands. Patch 26.04 buffed her: Disintegrate's damage now goes up to 260, and Molten Shield is on a flat 10-second cooldown.

## Mid lane backups: Lux and Malzahar

![Lux firing Final Spark during a fight near the mid lane inhibitor](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0510_aUM9yFN.webp)

**Lux** is the exception to "avoid skillshots". Light Binding (Q) roots the first two enemies hit for 2 seconds, and once it lands, the rest of her combo is guaranteed. Lucent Singularity (E) slows and clears waves from a safe distance, and Final Spark (R), shown here, reaches 3,400 units, so she is useful even when she cannot step forward. Patch 26.04 set Light Binding to a flat 10-second cooldown and lowered Prismatic Barrier's cooldown.

**Malzahar** is harder than he looks in lane, which is why the video ranks him below Annie. Malefic Visions (E) spreads to a new enemy when the infected target dies, and using it well on minions is where his skill expression lives. Late in the game he becomes simpler: Nether Grasp (R) suppresses one champion for up to 2.5 seconds, and his passive, Void Shift, periodically grants crowd control immunity and heavy damage reduction. His kit has had no changes since early 2025.

## ADC: Ashe

![Ashe Ranger's Focus tooltip in Practice Tool with flurry arrows hitting target dummies](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0560_z1sSOpy.webp)

Ashe is the clearest pick among the best ADC for beginners because her kit slows people for you. Frost Shot, her passive, makes every basic attack and ability hit slow the target by 20-30% for 2 seconds, so kiting and chasing need far less precise movement than on other marksmen.

Ranger's Focus (Q), the tooltip in this frame, unlocks after four basic attacks: for 6 seconds she fires a flurry of five arrows per attack with bonus attack speed. Volley (W) fires 7-11 arrows in a wide cone, so it hits something almost every time you throw it toward the enemy. Hawkshot (E) sends a hawk anywhere on the map for vision and stores two charges, which forces you to look at the map. Enchanted Crystal Arrow (R) is a global skillshot that stuns for 1 to 3.5 seconds, longer the farther it flew.

2026 patches only adjusted her numbers: 26.01 changed how her critical strike chance converts into damage, and 26.10 lowered Ranger's Focus's AD ratio to 110-130%. The way you play her has not changed.

## ADC backups: Sivir and Miss Fortune

![Sivir and Miss Fortune fighting in bot lane on Summoner's Rift](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0585_WJ8mUCr.webp)

**Sivir** needs more kiting than Ashe, but Boomerang Blade (Q) hits everything on the way out and back, and Ricochet (W) makes her attacks bounce to nearby enemies, so she damages the backline while hitting the frontline. Spell Shield (E) blocks one enemy ability for 1.5 seconds, and On the Hunt (R) speeds up the whole team. A patch 26.20 bug fix made Spell Shield properly block Leona's Zenith Blade and Miss Fortune's Double Up.

**Miss Fortune** has the shortest combo in the role: basic attack, then Double Up (Q), which bounces to a second enemy behind the first. Her passive deals bonus damage the first time she attacks a new target. Bullet Time (R) is a channelled cone; it lands best right after a teammate's hard engage, from Malphite, Amumu or Annie. Patch 26.21 buffed her: Make It Rain (E) damage went up and Bullet Time's critical damage rose to 145%.

## Support: Soraka

![Soraka in Practice Tool silencing a channeling target dummy with Equinox](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0715_FGKLriN.webp)

The video's strongest opinion is about autofill: if you are put on support and have never played it, pick Soraka instead of a carry champion. Among the best support for beginners she has one clear job, keeping people alive, and almost every button helps with it.

Starcall (Q) damages and slows, and if it hits an enemy champion she gets Rejuvenation, healing over time. Astral Infusion (W) heals an ally on a 6 to 2-second cooldown. Equinox (E) silences everyone in its area for 1.5 seconds; silence also cancels channels, so it can shut down an assassin who dives your carry. Wish (R) heals every allied champion on the map, more when they are below 40% health, which is how she saves a top laner across the map.

**One correction to the video:** it says W can be spammed at no cost. Per the wiki, Astral Infusion costs 10% of Soraka's maximum health plus 40-60 mana, and it cannot be cast when her health is too low. Hitting Q first gives her Rejuvenation, which reduces that health cost. Spam W only after Q lands, and do not heal yourself into a kill for the enemy. None of her abilities changed in 2026.

skip First-time Pyke or LeBlanc on autofill support. For wards, roams and the 2026 support gold rules, read [How to Play Support](/guides/lol-support-guide).

## Support backups: Janna and Leona

![Leona engaging with Zenith Blade and Shield of Dawn combo icons on screen](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0782.webp)

**Janna** is a defensive enchanter. Howling Gale (Q) charges for up to 3 seconds and knocks up everything in its path, Eye of the Storm (E) shields an ally, a turret or herself, and Monsoon (R) knocks back everyone nearby and then heals allies for up to 3 seconds. That makes her a hard counter to all-in engage supports like Nautilus, Alistar and Leona. Her kit has had no 2026 changes.

**Leona** is the simplest engage support, shown here going in with Zenith Blade and Shield of Dawn. Zenith Blade (E) dashes her to the last champion hit and roots them, Shield of Dawn (Q) turns her next attack into a 1-second stun, and Solar Flare (R) stuns enemies in the centre and slows the rest. You can also open with R and follow with E. Leona's kit has not changed since 2025.

## 2026 patch check: no reworks, only numbers

![Malphite shielded by Granite Shield trading in top lane](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0110_FFVyIQO.webp)

The video was uploaded on 12 December 2025, just before Season 2026 started. We checked every champion's patch history on the wiki through patch 26.21.

| Champion | 2026 changes | Does it change the advice? |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Malphite | 26.02: R cooldown 130/115/100, E base damage lower, W monster damage 180% | No, slightly fewer ultimates |
| Garen | 26.01 E crit change, 26.05 Q/E buffs, 26.14 R base damage 125/200/275 | No |
| Mordekaiser | 26.14-26.15 Grasp and stat-steal swings, 26.20 R cooldown 120/110/100 | No |
| Amumu, Malzahar, Soraka, Janna, Leona | None | No |
| Warwick | 26.09 passive damage up | No |
| Rammus | 26.01 lower health, 26.21 W resists lower | No |
| Annie | 26.04 Q damage up, E cooldown 10s | No |
| Lux | 26.04 Q cooldown 10s, W cooldown lower, mana tweaks | No |
| Ashe | 26.01 crit/W changes, 26.10 Q AD ratio lower, stat tweaks | No |
| Sivir | 26.01 Q ratios, 26.02 stats, 26.20 Spell Shield bug fixes | No |
| Miss Fortune | 26.01 crit changes, 26.21 E and R buffs | No |

So the list is still valid: these are easy champions to learn because of how their kits work, not because they are strong this patch. What did change in 2026 is the role around them. Role quests now reward staying in your assigned lane, and the support role loses gold from minions outside bot lane early on. The [Role Quests guide](/guides/lol-role-quests-guide) explains both.

## How this guide was fact-checked

- **Champion kits:** every ability name, cooldown, range, stun or root duration and cost above comes from each champion's page on the official League of Legends Wiki (wiki.leagueoflegends.com), read on 23 October 2026, current through patch 26.21.
- **Patch changes:** taken from each champion's patch history on the same wiki. No champion on this list was reworked after the video; Rammus's current ultimate comes from the 25.12 gameplay update, which predates the video.
- **From the video:** the choice of picks and honorable mentions, the "kit simplicity over macro" framing, and the gameplay and practice-tool frames used as images.
- **Corrections to the video:** Soraka's W is not free, it costs 10% max health plus mana (wiki). Rammus's ultimate only knocks up when cast during Powerball; alone it slows. The Malphite tooltip frame shows the pre-26.02 ultimate cooldown (130/105/80, now 130/115/100). Garen's ultimate base damage dropped in 26.14.
- **Prices and free rotation:** store prices and the below-level-11 rotation come from the wiki's champion and free champion rotation pages. The wiki marks its rotation list as possibly outdated, so we do not list rotation champions.

## What this guide doesn't answer

- **Builds, runes and skill orders:** these change every few patches; check an up-to-date build site for the current patch.
- **Which champion is strongest right now:** this is about ease of learning, not win rates or tier placement.
- **Counter-picks and matchups:** each pick has bad matchups (Malphite against magic-damage tanks, for example); a full matchup list is out of scope.
- **Macro for each role:** wave management, vision and objective timing are covered in the role guides linked above, not here.
- **ARAM and other modes:** everything here assumes Summoner's Rift draft and ranked.

## FAQ

### What is the best League of Legends champion for beginners?

There is one per role rather than one overall: Malphite top, Amumu jungle, Annie mid, Ashe ADC and Soraka support. Each has a simple kit with one clear win condition, such as Malphite's point-and-click Q and 1.5-second knock-up ultimate or Annie's guaranteed stun after four spell casts. Pick one for your main role and one for your secondary and stick with them.

### What is the easiest champion in each role in LoL?

Top: Malphite (backups Garen, Mordekaiser). Jungle: Amumu (Warwick, Rammus). Mid: Annie (Lux, Malzahar). ADC: Ashe (Sivir, Miss Fortune). Support: Soraka (Janna, Leona). The picks are based on kit simplicity, not the current tier list, so they stay valid across patches.

### Have any of the easy beginner champions been reworked in 2026?

No. We checked all fifteen champions on the official wiki through patch 26.21 and none was reworked; they only got number changes. Examples: Malphite's ultimate cooldown rose to 130/115/100 seconds in 26.02, Garen's ultimate base damage dropped in 26.14, and Annie and Lux got cooldown buffs in 26.04. Rammus's current ultimate dates from the 25.12 gameplay update, before 2026.

### Is Soraka good for beginners on support?

Yes. She is the easiest support to learn: Q damages and slows, W heals an ally, E silences an area for 1.5 seconds and R heals every allied champion on the map. One correction to a common claim: her W is not free. It costs 10% of her maximum health plus mana, and landing Q first gives her Rejuvenation, which reduces that health cost.

### Which beginner champions are cheapest or free to play?

According to the wiki's store prices, 11 of the 15 champions on this list cost 225 Blue Essence, the cheapest tier: Malphite, Garen, Amumu, Warwick, Annie, Lux, Ashe, Sivir, Miss Fortune, Soraka and Leona. Mordekaiser, Rammus and Janna cost 675, and Malzahar is more expensive. Accounts below summoner level 11 also get their own beginner free rotation, so check it before buying.
