# HOI4 Japan Guide 2026: Focus Order, Doctrines and Strike South

> A full Japan build for the No Compromise, No Surrender DLC: the creator's posted focus order and political-power spend order, the new doctrine-mastery and naval-dominance mechanics, a captured division template and ship/aircraft designer, and the pivot from the China war into a Strike South world conquest. Screen-only numbers and comment disagreements are called out separately from what the video actually says.

## 🎯 The core idea

This build rushes Japan's forked focus tree toward restoring the Emperor (the
Chrysanthemum Throne) while grinding doctrines and a fixed political-power spend order,
steamrolls China fast enough to still be at war when the laws need flipping, then repoints
the same [navy](/guides/hoi4-navy-guide-2026)/marine build — naval dominance, a carrier
sortie-efficiency trick, amphibious **Marines** — into a "Strike South" world conquest ending
with the continental US capitulated.

## Doctrine mastery — how it actually works

Training a unit type grinds mastery for whichever doctrine family covers it. Switching your
overall family — say, away from Grand Battle Plan — **zeroes every
subdoctrine's mastery** already earned, plus costs army XP. The creator admits he'd
personally rather run **Superior Firepower**, but stays on Grand Battle Plan to avoid that reset.

## Navy setup and the new mechanics

Assign Yamamoto (torpedo bomber + cruiser captain) to the main fleet, split a destroyer
fleet under an upgraded Koga, and form a sub fleet under a Lancer-trait admiral. Two
mechanics are new this DLC: **Naval Headquarters** (port level 8, and — hedged, not
confirmed — an urban province), and **support ships**, which the creator hasn't tested
thoroughly.

![Fuel tooltip over the world map showing current fuel, daily gain and consumption broken out by Army, Air and Navy](/media/guides/markdown/42384c5f-7712-4eb4-b648-892f34d366b0.webp)
This fuel tooltip is never read aloud: Current Fuel 126.2K against a 553.5K capacity, Daily
Gain 682/day, Current Daily Consumption 1.4K/day against a 20.4K/day maximum, split Army
193/day, Air 529/day, Navy 643/day. At this rate the stockpile empties in 6.2 months — right
where the creator says on screen the fleet has reached "equilibrium on the fuel."

![Research tab showing the Support Ships project's output stats: manpower, detection and speed](/media/guides/markdown/0fe79e1a-30f5-47a0-b61d-17b5617e1332.webp)
The Support Ships project, as it appears in the Research tab — none of this is read aloud:
Service **Manpower** 250, Surface Detection 20.0, Sub Detection 1.0, Surface Visibility 10.0,
Depth Charges 1.0, Max Speed 32.0 kn, Max Range 3,000 km, HP 25.0.

## Division templates

The video never reads template stats aloud — the mobile-warfare "Ho Shidan" template the

Around the inter-war period the creator refits every carrier (deck space, AA, radar, guns,
armor), then reworks the light cruiser line through the **Kure Naval Arsenal** design team —
"the best MIO for your CLs and your battleships" — upgrading light attack, then heavy
attack, then light piercing/light attack again. Screen-only design-team bonuses: Research
Bonus +10%, Design Team Assign Cost 0.10/day, a flat +2/+2
[equipment bonus](/guides/hoi4-modifier-stacking-red-bubble) to all battleships and cruiser
ships. Individual weapons-tree module names aren't legible at capture resolution, so none
are invented here.

## Aircraft design — medium airframe via Aichi Kokuki

For the medium aircraft line the creator picks **Aichi Kokuki** ("Range Focused Aircraft
Designer" in-game), narrated only as "the range MIO." Screen-only: +10% range to Basic
Medium Airframe, Basic Heavy Fighter and Basic Scout Plane, +5% research bonus, 0.10/day and
1,000 funds on completion. Basic Medium Airframe itself: 40 manpower, 990 km range, 18.0 air
defense, 325.0 km/h max speed, 80.0% reliability, 32.00 production cost, 202 days to
research.

No [tank designer](/guides/hoi4-meta-division-templates-and-tank-designs) appears anywhere in this video — this build is naval- and
Marine-led, so none is reported here rather than invented.

National Defense State requires **war support over 79%**, reached via decisions (Incorporate
Imperial Way of Buddhism, Inspire Relentless Divine Nationalism). The Chrysanthemum Throne
also needs army/navy faction influence roughly equal — the creator fires his own Grand
Battle Plan Expert pick and endorses the naval faction to balance them. The real cost: an
Influential Naval Faction adds +2.5% production cost to carrier aircraft, +2.5% to
warships, and +2.5% to navy fuel consumption, never quantified in narration.

## Naval dominance, carriers, and the Pacific push

By this push the creator has 19 **Marines** via the right-side special forces doctrine: +6%
capacity from one focus, +24 cap from Tip of the Spear, +6 cap / +10% attack from Commando
Expert. Plan: Guam first (opens US Navy access to the Philippines), then the Philippines,
Malaya and the **[Dutch East Indies](/guides/hoi4-dutch-east-indies-independence-and-conquest-run)** together.

The main engagement against the US Pacific Fleet — Yamamoto vs. Admiral Frank Jack Fletcher,
mid-battle as the "Battle of Koror." The visible tooltip states the zone requires **375
naval dominance** to count as friendly-controlled, plus weather/night modifiers never
mentioned in narration. Yamamoto dies here; command passes to another admiral.

The video states a sea zone's naval dominance going from 45 to a projected

resolved. The US destroyer-loss figures given during the fleet battle ("about 100," then
minutes later "almost 500") are both hedged by the creator as rough estimates, not a
combat-log readout.

## US conquest

By the time the creator invades the continental US it's November 1942 — "a little late," he
says, since Hawaii-first ("high-castling") would have beaten detouring through Australia.
Naval bases extend to Hawaii for range, the fleet splits three ways to hold dominance in
three sea zones, and the landing goes in at Los Angeles before battle-planning the rest of
the continent.

## FAQ

### What is the best focus order for Japan in HOI4?

This guide follows the creator's own posted order: Ministry of Commerce and Industry into Purge The Kodoha Faction to open the tree, then a mix of army, navy and political focuses culminating in The Chrysanthemum Throne. The full 31-focus order is in the table above. Most individual focus day counts are never read aloud in the video, so treat the order as reliable and the timings as approximate unless marked screen-only.

### How does doctrine mastery work in the new HOI4 doctrine system?

Training units of a given type grinds mastery for whichever doctrine family covers that type, and switching your overall doctrine family zeroes every subdoctrine's mastery you've already earned on top of an army XP cost. The video's advice is to pick whichever subdoctrine already has the most reserved mastery first, since it finishes fastest and its bonuses stack with what comes after.

### Should you abandon the Naval Treaties early as Japan?

The video abandons them early to make bigger hulls legal sooner, but this is disputed in the comments: one high-liked reply argues the game already warns you when a ship is big enough to trigger abrogation, and waiting for that warning delays the AI's own naval buildup by 1-2 years compared to abandoning early. Both sides are reported here rather than picking one.

### How do you avoid a long war with China in this Japan build?

Man the Mengjiang/Manchukuo border before the war starts, since Mengjiang joins against you, then battle-plan in fast rather than waiting, because rival Chinese factions line up more troops the longer you delay. A top comment adds that completing the "Create the Mongol military government" focus before the war turns Mengjiang into a puppet instead of a combatant, removing that front entirely — an addition not in the video's own order.

### What division template and ship/aircraft designs does this Japan guide use?

The only division template captured with full stats is the Chuton-chi Shidan garrison template (width 12, soft attack 61.9, breakthrough 21.6, org 51.4, cost 277-316 IC); the video's narrated mobile-warfare template was never shown on screen at readable resolution. Ship design runs through the Kure Naval Arsenal MIO for light cruisers and battleships, and aircraft through the range-focused Aichi Kokuki MIO for the medium airframe line. No tank designer appears anywhere in the video.

### What is the Harakiri Debate in HOI4?

It is a focus in Japan's political tree, eleventh in the order this guide uses, and one of only two whose day count is visible on screen — 14 days. It gives +5% base war support and removes the Collapsing Cabinet penalty, so it is worth timing to fire the moment that penalty appears rather than taking it whenever it comes up. It sits behind The Military Ministers' Attaché System.

### What is Chuton-chi Shidan in HOI4?

Chuton-chi Shidan is Japan's garrison-type division template. This guide retemplates second-line divisions into it on turn one, specifically because it already has open support-company slots and needs no redesign to be useful. Transcribed from the Division Designer it runs 12 width, 61.9 soft attack, 21.6 breakthrough and 51.4 organisation, at 277–316 IC.

### How does Japan beat the USA in HOI4?

Range is the whole problem, and the fix is Hawaii. Extending naval bases out to Hawaii first — "high-castling" — beats detouring through Australia, which is the mistake this run makes and pays for by not landing on the continental US until November 1942. From there the fleet splits three ways to hold naval dominance in three sea zones, and the landing goes in at Los Angeles before battle-planning the rest.
