## 🎯 The core idea

> Armor tier only matters relative to the ammo shooting it — the same vest can shrug off one gun's bullets and get shredded by another's. Once you know the tier ladder (gray, green, blue, purple, gold, and red for some types) and the four possible outcomes of a single shot, buying armor and ammo stops being guesswork and becomes a straightforward budget decision: never run below blue ammo, and buy armor for the fight you're expecting, not the highest number you can afford.

<li><span class="badge cheap">cheap</span> small cost</li>
<li><span class="badge setup">setup</span> needs preparation</li>
<li><span class="badge grind">grind</span> pays off slowly</li>
<li><span class="badge skip">skip</span> the thing to stop doing</li></ul>

## Reading a gun's real damage before you buy armor to counter it

![Delta Force Gunsmith details screen for the CI-19 Assault Rifle showing Damage 35 and Armor Penetration 38](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/08/normalized_frame_0042.jpg)

A weapon's headline "damage" number is always its upper-torso hit value — for the CI-19 shown here, that's 35. Every other body part is a multiplier of that: roughly double for headshots (73), a little less for lower abdomen (31), and heavily reduced for limbs (14). Since players have 100 HP total, that 35-damage CI-19 kills an unarmored target in three upper-torso hits (105 damage) — the number to check before you assume any gun is "weak." Separately, every gun also has its own Armor Penetration stat (38 here, roughly mid-pack; some guns reach the 50s, others sit lower) — this is what determines how fast that gun chews through armor, independent of its raw damage number.

## The five (or six) tiers, and what a single shot actually does

Ammo and armor share one ladder: gray, green, blue, purple, gold, and red for some specialised types. Every shot's outcome depends purely on how your ammo's tier compares to the target's armor tier, and there are four outcomes worth memorizing:

<ol class="checklist">
<li class="ch free">
<label><input type="checkbox"><span class="body"><span class="name">Two or more tiers below your ammo (or no armor at all): full damage</span> <span class="badge free">free</span><br><span class="desc">Your ammo completely ignores armor this far below it — full HP damage, plus it still damages and eventually breaks that armor.</span></span></label>

<li class="ch cheap">
<label><input type="checkbox"><span class="body"><span class="name">One tier below your ammo: 75% damage (25% reduction)</span> <span class="badge cheap">cheap</span><br><span class="desc">Shooting one tier down still lets most of your damage through while you grind down the armor's remaining durability.</span></span></label>

</li>
<li class="ch setup">
<label><input type="checkbox"><span class="body"><span class="name">Same tier as your ammo: 50% damage</span> <span class="badge setup">setup</span><br><span class="desc">A fair fight — half damage per hit until the vest's durability is fully spent, then every hit after that does full damage.</span></span></label>

<li class="ch skip">
<label><input type="checkbox"><span class="body"><span class="name">One or more tiers above your ammo: zero HP damage</span> <span class="badge skip">skip</span><br><span class="desc">You'll do armor damage only (and less of it, the further above your ammo the armor is) until it's fully broken — no HP damage reaches the target until then.</span></span></label>

Once a vest's durability (a fixed pool — 50 total on the tactical vest used in this demo) is fully spent, it's broken: a popup confirms it, and from that point on every hit does full damage as if the target had no armor at all, regardless of the ammo/armor tier gap.

![A test dummy taking 70 HP damage and 0 armor damage, consistent with fully broken armor](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/08/normalized_frame_0249.jpg)

## Armor only protects the body parts it actually covers

Armor's tier only matters on the parts of the body it visually covers — usually the torso, and on some armor, shoulders or the lower abdomen too. Limbs (arms and legs) take full, unmitigated HP damage from any shot regardless of what vest tier the target is wearing, since no armor in the game currently protects them. If you're shooting into a heavily-armored target and not landing kills, aiming for limbs won't help either — they take reduced base damage from most guns regardless of armor, so torso hits (buying down their armor tier advantage) or headshots remain the better play.

## Never run below blue ammo — the discount isn't worth it

![Delta Force ammo configuration screen for the UZI showing 9x19mm PSO with a 110 percent damage ratio at Penetration Level 1](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/08/normalized_frame_0340.jpg)

Tier one (gray) and tier two (green) ammo actually do slightly more damage than higher tiers against fully unarmored targets — 110% damage ratio versus 100% for blue, purple and gold, confirmed here on the UZI's 9x19mm PSO round. That sounds like a discount deal, but it isn't one worth taking: gray and green ammo's low penetration level means they perform far worse against any armored target, and blue ammo is cheap enough (roughly 50,000–70,000 in-game currency for 200 rounds of most calibers) that there's no real budget case for running anything lower. Treat blue as your practical floor, not gray or green.

## Special ammo types that break the normal rules

![A player firing a special dark-red ammo round at a gold-armored dummy, testing a blunt-damage bullet type](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/08/normalized_frame_0423.jpg)

Beyond the standard tier ladder, a handful of ammo types behave differently and are worth knowing about even if you don't run them every raid:

- **RIP ammo**: zero armor penetration but a large (140%) flat damage boost — strong against unarmored targets or exposed limbs, though a past balance pass reduced how effective it is against limbs specifically, since limb damage is already reduced by default.
- **PD12 (ASh-12 rifle)**: a dual-tip round that deals "blunt damage" through armor it can't fully penetrate (rated against up to level five armor) — it can land real HP damage on a gold-armored target while barely touching that armor's durability, useful if you want to kill a target without cracking their vest (for looting it intact afterward).
- **Dragon's Breath (shotgun)**: purple-tier, zero penetration, but applies a burn/fire status effect — more of a panic-inducing utility round than a top damage option compared to slug shells to the head, but genuinely disruptive in a close fight.

![A shotgun loaded with a Dragon's Breath incendiary shell aimed at an armored test dummy](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/08/normalized_frame_0484.jpg)

<div class="tipbox video">The compound bow also does a small amount of blunt damage through armor with its blue-tier arrows (about 10 durability damage plus some HP through a gold vest in the demo) — a minor bonus on an already under-used weapon, not a reason to switch to it on its own.</div>

## What this means for your buying decisions

<ol class="checklist">
<li class="ch grind">
<label><input type="checkbox"><span class="body"><span class="name">Match armor tier to the ammo tier you expect to face, not your budget ceiling</span> <span class="badge grind">grind</span><br><span class="desc">Buying gold armor against opponents mostly running blue or purple ammo is often overkill currency spent for a durability buffer you won't need every raid.</span></span></label>
<em><a class="jump" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=np9GGzsRHqA&t=2s" target="_blank" rel="noopener">0:02 ↗️</a></em>
</li>
</ol>

## How this guide was fact-checked

Every damage figure, tier interaction and ammo behavior in this guide is read directly from The Beard Guys' firing-range demonstration (8:45, published 2025-08-25), cross-referenced against the in-game Gunsmith details panels and firing-range HP/armor damage readouts shown on screen. The core tier-ladder mechanic (gray through gold/red, and the full/75%/50%/zero damage outcomes) matches the penetration-vs-armor mechanics independently verified in this catalogue's companion Ammo Types & Armor Penetration guide, which backstops the numbers here against a second, more recent (2026) source.

## Where this fits into your wider gear loadout

Armor is one line item in a bigger gear loadout, and the tier decisions on this page are only half the picture — how much of your budget goes to armor versus ammo, meds and other loadout slots is a separate call this video doesn't weigh in on. Repairing a damaged vest between raids, rather than rebuying at full price once its durability is spent, is a real option in Delta Force, but exact repair costs and where to do it aren't covered by this source, so treat that as a lead to check in-game rather than a number quoted here.

## What this guide doesn't answer

This is a mechanics-and-buying guide, not a per-helmet or per-vest price/value ranking — the source video demonstrates tier interactions on generic tactical vests and doesn't break down specific named helmet items, their individual price tags, or repair costs, so this guide can't give you a "buy this exact helmet" recommendation. It also doesn't cover the full armor-penetration falloff-over-range mechanic in depth (how penetration changes as a bullet travels further) — that's covered in more numeric detail in this catalogue's Ammo Types & Armor Penetration guide. Since the source notes the underlying tier system has been stable long enough that creators have stopped remaking this video, treat the specific currency prices mentioned here as dated reference points rather than current market values.
