## 🎯 The core idea

> Warden is a tanky gun brawler who wins by locking one target down. Flask them first so they lose stamina and slow down, then land Binding Word before they can run 20 metres, and save Last Stand for fights where its lifesteal keeps you alive. This Warden build stacks bullet resist early, then adds ultimate items that turn Last Stand into a stun and a 1,000-point barrier.

## What Warden does in the City Never Sleeps patch

![Warden brawling with the enemy Walker at 24 minutes in a ranked Deadlock match](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_1700.webp)

The official deadlock.wiki tags Warden as an Initiator, Fearless and a One Man Army. He is a durable brawler with 805 base health, 6.3 m/s move speed and three stamina bars. His gun, Freedom's Cost, is a medium-range projectile weapon that fires 17 shots per magazine, does about 66 damage per second and has an 18 m to 47 m falloff range. He opens a fight with Alchemical Flask or Binding Word, survives it with Willpower, and finishes it with Last Stand.

This Deadlock Warden guide is built on TacLaser's "The Warden Build You Need to Climb" (uploaded 8 August 2026). His item build credits HipsterLion's "Cage/Ult" build. TacLaser argues that Warden is easy to play and stronger than his reputation, and that he beats several popular carries if you play him as a gun hero who sets up his own kills.

The video came out after the 30 June Soul Urn and Unstable Rift update. It is older than the 16 September 2026 balance patch, which nerfed Warden and three items in this build, and the 29 September City Never Sleeps map rework. The wiki's Warden update history has no Warden changes after 16 September, and the 14 October patch did not touch him or this build's items. Every number below matches the wiki on 19 October 2026, and every change since the video is pointed out where it comes up.

## Alchemical Flask: the opener for every Warden fight

![Warden's Alchemical Flask tooltip in the Deadlock sandbox showing radius, slow and weapon damage reduction](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0115.webp)

Alchemical Flask is a thrown flask with a 5.5 m radius and a 12-second cooldown. It does 60 spirit damage (+0.63 per spirit power), slows enemies for 3 seconds and cuts their weapon damage by 25% for 7 seconds. Warden's whole plan starts here: the slow and the weapon damage cut make the trade even before you shoot.

| Upgrade | Cost | What it adds |
| --- | --- | --- |
| T1 | 1 point | Enemies hit lose 1 stamina |
| T2 | 2 points | +35 damage and another -25% weapon damage |
| T3 | 5 points | -7s cooldown, +2 m radius and -30% fire rate |

free The video's sandbox tooltip shows a 20% slow. The wiki now lists 16%, because the 16 September patch reduced every movement slow in the game by about 20%. The same patch also made the flask's throw range and projectile speed 30% shorter and slower, so you have to be closer than you were in August. Throw it from near brawling range, not across a lane.

## Willpower: Warden's barrier and chase tool

![Warden fighting at close range in a doorway during a ranked Deadlock match](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_1720.webp)

Willpower gives Warden a 125-point barrier (+0.8 per spirit power) and 15% bonus move speed for 5 seconds, on a 40-second cooldown. TacLaser compares it to a Grit-style shield and says it grows with your level. The wiki instead shows it growing with spirit power. That still makes it bigger over a game in this build, because Extra Spirit, Diviner's Kevlar and Spiritual Overflow all add spirit power.

| Upgrade | Cost | What it adds |
| --- | --- | --- |
| T1 | 1 point | +20% move speed |
| T2 | 2 points | -24s cooldown and +2s duration |
| T3 | 5 points | +30% debuff resist and better barrier scaling |

The 16 September patch nerfed T3: its debuff resist went from 40% to 30%, and its spirit scaling went from +2.7 to +2.1. Use Willpower to close the last few metres when an enemy starts running from Binding Word, or press it the moment you take burst damage. Don't save it for later. A 16-second cooldown after T2 means it's ready again for nearly every fight.

## Warden Binding Word: why you never cast it alone

![Warden casting Binding Word on a sandbox target, with the ability tooltip shown](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0095_2zQyvzt.webp)

The video calls Binding Word "the cage". It is a curse with 15 m cast range and a 34-second cooldown. It doesn't trap the target straight away. The enemy has 2.8 seconds to get 20 m away from where they were standing. If they don't, they take 110 damage (+2.44 per spirit power) and are immobilized for 1.75 seconds.

| Upgrade | Cost | What it adds |
| --- | --- | --- |
| T1 | 1 point | Warden deals +20% bullet damage to trapped heroes for 5s |
| T2 | 2 points | +0.75s immobilize duration |
| T3 | 5 points | -14s cooldown, and the target is silenced until they escape or are immobilized |

That escape window is why TacLaser insists you never cast Binding Word on its own. A target with full stamina can just dash out. Hit the flask first so they lose a stamina bar and are slowed, or cast Slowing Hex, which slows them, shortens their dashes and silences movement abilities. Then curse them. Late in the game, the full combo is flask, Slowing Hex, then Binding Word. The target is slowed, can't use movement abilities and is silenced by T3 while the timer runs, and their weapon damage is lower for 7 seconds. If the flask is on cooldown, Slowing Hex into Binding Word is enough on its own.

The wiki also lists the curse as dispellable, blocked by Indomitable, and suppressed by Unstoppable. It also triggers Reactive Barrier.

## Warden Last Stand: the ultimate that wins fights

![Warden's Last Stand tooltip with its DPS, lifesteal and upgrade tiers in the Deadlock sandbox](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0300_CDPrPru.webp)

Last Stand charges for 2 seconds. It then sends out pulses every 0.5 seconds for 6 seconds in a 12 m radius, doing 70 DPS (+1.3 per spirit power). Warden heals for 75% of the damage he deals to heroes and 10% of the damage he deals to non-heroes. The cooldown is 180 seconds. While it's active you can't move, and it does only 50% damage to objectives.

| Upgrade | Cost | What it adds |
| --- | --- | --- |
| T1 | 1 point | +4 m radius (16 m total) |
| T2 | 2 points | +40.5 DPS and -30s cooldown |
| T3 | 5 points | +4s duration, Unstoppable and +30% resists while channeling |

skip One detail the video leaves out matters a lot. Last Stand's 50% bullet and spirit resist, and the T3 Unstoppable, only apply during the 2-second charge, not the full duration. The wiki says this directly in its notes. TacLaser's advice to press it at half health and out-heal the enemy works because of the 75% lifesteal, not because you're tanky while it runs. Anyone who can stun you after the charge, or who walks out of the radius, beats it. Cast it when Binding Word has an enemy stuck in place, or when several enemies are already inside 16 m.

## Warden skill order and ability upgrades

![Binding Word upgrade tiers shown over TacLaser's Warden build in the Deadlock shop](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0230_w8fD0vI.webp)

TacLaser's Warden skill order is simple, and it fits the combo above:

| Order | Point | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | Alchemical Flask T1 | Every flask removes a stamina bar, so your curses land |
| 2 | Last Stand T1, then T2 | Radius, damage and -30s cooldown on your first ultimate, which wins lane fights |
| 3 | Binding Word T1, T2, T3 | +20% bullet damage, longer root, then the silence and -14s cooldown |
| 4 | Remaining points | Not covered in the video; see below |

The video stops at maxing Binding Word. Our own suggestion for the next points is Willpower T2 (24 seconds off the cooldown), then Flask T2, then whichever T3 fits the game. Take Last Stand T3 if you're fighting in big groups, and Willpower T3 if the enemy has a lot of crowd control. Warden's ability upgrades cost 1, 2 and 5 points for each tier. In the City Never Sleeps patch you now refund a point by right-clicking the ability icon, not by clicking the upgrade button.

## Warden items: the core box you finish first

![Warden core item box in the Deadlock shop with the Bullet Resist Shredder tooltip open](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0420_7Que1U1.webp)

TacLaser's in-game build labels this row "you are hard to kill after you finish this box". These are the core Warden items, bought from left to right:

| Item | Cost | What it gives Warden |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Intensifying Magazine | 1,600 | +20% ammo, weapon damage ramps up to +45% over 2.5s of continuous fire |
| Quicksilver Reload (imbue on Flask) | 1,600 | Every 18s the flask deals bonus spirit damage, gives +10% fire rate and reloads your gun |
| Escalating Resilience | 3,200 | +35% ammo, +75 health, +18% weapon damage; each bullet hit adds 2% bullet resist, up to 30% |
| Enduring Speed | 1,600 | +2 m/s move speed and 25% slow resist, because Warden is big and slow |
| Extra Spirit | 800 | +10 spirit power |
| Bullet Resist Shredder | 1,600 | +9% bullet resist, +9% weapon damage; your spirit damage strips 10% of the target's bullet resist for 8s |
| Slowing Hex | 1,600 | Active: -16% move speed, -26% dash distance, movement silence for 3.5s, 25 m range |
| Spirit Resilience | 3,200 | +30% spirit resist, +15% more below half health |

cheap The first three cost 6,400 souls together. The video says that with this box you have 9% bullet resist (from Shredder) rising to about 36% while you keep hitting shots. That checks out: resists multiply, so Shredder's 9% plus Escalating Resilience's maximum 30% comes to about 36%. Two items have changed since August. Slowing Hex's cooldown rose from 27 to 29 seconds on 16 September. Its slow is also weaker after the global slow nerf.

## Warden late game build: ultimate items and spirit

![Warden mid and late game core items in the Deadlock shop with the Silencer tooltip open](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0545_hV4miWD.webp)

Once the box is done, TacLaser's "Mid/Late Game Core" row turns Warden into what he calls an unkillable late-game threat:

| Item | Cost | Role in the build |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Mercurial Magnum | 6,400 | Quicksilver upgrade: until you reload, your bullets deal bonus spirit damage |
| Spiritual Overflow | 6,400 | Shooting heroes builds fire rate, spirit power and spirit lifesteal |
| Diviner's Kevlar | 6,400 | Casting Last Stand gives a 1,000 barrier and +40 spirit power for 20s; +10% ultimate cooldown reduction |
| Lightning Scroll | 6,400 | Your ultimate's damage stuns and deals 150 bonus spirit damage after 3s, once per target |
| Boundless Spirit or Silencer | 6,400 | More spirit power, or bullets that cut enemy spirit damage and build up to a silence |

setup Diviner's Kevlar and Lightning Scroll are why the ultimate gets two points in lane. Last Stand, then flask, Slowing Hex and Binding Word, means anyone caught in the pulses is stunned after 3 seconds while you sit behind a 1,000-point barrier. You can also press Willpower for an extra barrier on top.

The 16 September patch moved the numbers for three of these items. Spiritual Overflow now builds up 35% slower and gives 30 spirit power (was 40) and 25% fire rate (was 30%). Mercurial Magnum's bonus bullet damage fell from 25% to 20%, and its scaling dropped from 0.49 to 0.38. Diviner's Kevlar got a buff: +10% ultimate cooldown reduction, which makes it even more important in this build. If you're slot-locked because you haven't taken a Walker, the video suggests upgrading Extra Spirit to Improved Spirit or Boundless Spirit first. For the last slot, buy Silencer if you're playing aggressive, or a tankier option such as Vampiric Burst, Siphon Bullets, Inhibitor or Colossus.

## Situational items when you keep dying

![Warden mid game situational items in the Deadlock shop with the Warp Stone tooltip open](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0570.webp)

The build includes a "Mid Game Situationals" row, labelled "buy if you're dying". Pick based on what's killing you:

- **Metal Skin** (3,200): 5 seconds of bullet immunity, for when a gun carry focuses you.
- **Dispel Magic** (3,200): removes every negative effect except ultimates, then heals you for 250. Buy it against stacked spirit debuffs.
- **Counterspell** (3,200): your next parry blocks an enemy ability or item.
- **Warp Stone** (3,200): teleports you 11 m forward and gives +30% bullet resist, if you get caught without a dash.

In lane, three cheap counters are listed. **Extra Regen** helps if you keep losing health. **Rusted Barrel** (-32% fire rate on a target) is good against a Vindicta-style gun lane. **Monster Rounds** is for heroes who push waves hard, such as McGinnis, Graves or Rem, or a lane with two gun heroes. If the game runs very late, the video swaps Extra Spirit for Siphon Bullets and Intensifying Magazine for Frenzy.

## Late-game counters to the enemy's best player

![Warden full build page with super late game options and counter items in the Deadlock shop](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0605.webp)

TacLaser keeps a "Super Late Game Counters" row aimed at whoever has the most souls on the other team:

| Enemy carry | Item | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Haze or Wraith running the lobby | Cursed Relic | 3.25s silence and disarm that also stops item use |
| Mobile heroes: Vindicta, Lash, Grey Talon, Holliday | Phantom Strike | Teleport to them, pull them down, slow them by 40% and disarm them |
| Gun carries such as Venator | Disarming Hex | Disarms the target and lowers their bullet resist |
| Airborne or fleeing targets | Knockdown | Stuns after 2s, with a longer stun on airborne targets |

These are the Warden tips that matter most in long games. Any of these items, plus Binding Word, gives you two lockdowns on the same target. That's usually the whole fight when you're the one carrying.

## Warden laning: winning the gun trade

![Warden shooting an enemy hero on a lane staircase in the first two minutes of a ranked match](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0760_QVOnngw.webp)

free Warden laning is about shooting, not ability spam. Intensifying Magazine and Escalating Resilience both reward holding fire on a hero, and every hit gives you bullet resist, so against gun heroes the longer the trade goes the better it gets for you. TacLaser says gun lanes struggle to kill a Warden with this setup. In the video, he admits he misses a lot of early shots. That costs you, because both items need hits to pay off.

Use the flask to start trades, and hit with it often, because Quicksilver Reload refills your magazine every time it's charged. Keep Binding Word for when the enemy has used their stamina or is pushed up in lane. As soon as Last Stand unlocks with T1 and T2, look for a fight near your Guardian where the enemy can't get out of 16 m in time. TacLaser's ranked game picked up several early kills this way.

## How to play Warden in Deadlock after lane

![Warden scoring a triple kill in a mid-game street fight in Deadlock](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_1395.webp)

Here is how to play Warden in Deadlock after lane, as TacLaser puts it: farm first, but show up for every major event. If your team pushes a Walker, be there. If an Unstable Rift opens, be in it with Last Stand ready. In his game, he farmed after lane, joined the fights, and got the triple kill shown above before buying Spirit Resilience.

The City Never Sleeps rework (29 September 2026) changed the map this advice runs on. The jungle neutrals are now called Haunts, and there are new types. Steam Vents give invisibility and regen while you stand on them. Tough Crates only open with a heavy melee, and Healing Snacks are hidden around the map. Buff Containers and Sinner's Sacrifice can now give spirit resist, ability range, bullet resist and move speed. A Steam Vent is a good place for Warden to recover between fights without walking back to base. The 16 September patch also raised the soul bounties on Guardians and Walkers, which is one more reason to join the pushes the video recommends.

## Warden teamfights and Rift fights

![Warden channeling Last Stand in a Broadway lane teamfight in Deadlock](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_1830.webp)

In teamfights, Warden is the frontline who dives one target. Open with the flask on the group, Slowing Hex and Binding Word on the carry, then Last Stand on top of whoever is stuck. The Unstable Rift is a good place for this. Its capture zone has a 20 m radius around a side-lane bridge, and anyone standing in it shows up on the minimap. Enemies can't contest it without standing near you, so a 16 m Last Stand covers most of the point.

skip Don't cast Last Stand on a full-health team from the edge of the fight. It roots you for 6 seconds and only protects you for the first 2, so a team that just backs off loses nothing. Cast it after you've caught someone, not to start the fight.

## Warden counters: what beats Warden

![Warden pushing the enemy shrines late in a ranked Deadlock match](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_1990.webp)

If you are playing against Warden, three things beat him, and they all come straight from how his kit works:

- **Mobility and stamina.** Binding Word only triggers if you're still within 20 m of where you were cursed after 2.8 seconds. Keep a dash ready, and stay away from flask range when the curse is up.
- **Debuff resist and dispels.** The wiki lists Binding Word as dispellable, blocked by Indomitable and suppressed by Unstoppable. Debuff Reducer-style resists also shorten it.
- **Anti-heal and range on Last Stand.** Its healing is reduced by healing reduction (Healbane cuts incoming healing by 35%). He can't move while it runs, and his resists only last for the 2-second charge. Walk out of the radius or burst him once the charge is over.

The best answer for a Warden player against these counters is the late-game counter row above, plus Dispel Magic if you're the one being locked down.

## How this guide was fact-checked

Every ability number (cooldowns, radii, damage, scaling and all three upgrade tiers) and every item stat and cost comes from deadlock.wiki: the Warden page and its update history, each item page, and the patch pages for 22 August, 16 September, 29 September, 5 October and 14 October 2026. TacLaser's video was used for the playstyle, the skill order, the item order and its labelled rows (we read the item names from his on-screen build), the lane-counter and late-counter matchups, and the gameplay frames.

Corrections we made to the video:

- The video's flask tooltip shows a 20% slow. The wiki lists 16% after the 16 September patch reduced all slows by about 20%. The flask's range and projectile speed were also cut by 30%.
- The video says Willpower's barrier scales with level. The wiki shows spirit-power scaling (0.8 per point), and the T3 bonus was reduced on 16 September.
- The video presents Last Stand as a tanky ultimate. The wiki says its 50% resists and T3 Unstoppable only apply during the 2-second charge.
- Slowing Hex's cooldown is 29 seconds, not the 27 seconds it was in August. Spiritual Overflow and Mercurial Magnum were nerfed, and Diviner's Kevlar gained 10% ultimate cooldown reduction.
- The video's "36% bullet resist" figure is correct: 9% from Bullet Resist Shredder multiplied with Escalating Resilience's 30%.

The skill points after Binding Word are our own suggestion, not the video's. The map advice in the "after lane" section comes from the official City Never Sleeps patch notes, because the video was recorded on the old map.

## What this guide doesn't answer

- **Where Warden ranks against other heroes.** The Deadlock tier list guide covers that, and this guide sticks to how to play him.
- **A full spirit-only Warden build.** TacLaser's build is a gun and ultimate hybrid. Pure spirit variants exist, but the video doesn't test them.
- **Hero-by-hero lane matchups.** The video names only a few lane counters (Vindicta, McGinnis, Graves, Rem, Haze plus Wraith). Every other matchup would be guesswork.
- **Exact Haunt camp routes on the new map.** They changed on 29 September and have their own guide. The video was recorded before the rework.
- **Street Brawl Warden.** That mode changes Last Stand's lifesteal and drafts items, which is a different game from this build.

## FAQ

### What is the best Warden build in Deadlock right now?

Finish a core box first: Intensifying Magazine, Quicksilver Reload on Alchemical Flask, Escalating Resilience, Enduring Speed, Extra Spirit, Bullet Resist Shredder, Slowing Hex and Spirit Resilience. Then buy Mercurial Magnum, Spiritual Overflow, Diviner's Kevlar and Lightning Scroll, and end with Boundless Spirit or Silencer. Spiritual Overflow and Mercurial Magnum were nerfed on 16 September 2026, but Diviner's Kevlar gained 10% ultimate cooldown reduction, so the build still works after the patch.

### What is the Warden skill order?

Put the first point in Alchemical Flask, because its T1 makes every enemy hit lose a stamina bar. Next, take Last Stand T1 and T2 for +4 m radius, +40.5 DPS and 30 seconds off the cooldown. Then max Binding Word, which adds +20% bullet damage on trapped heroes, a longer root, and at T3 a silence and 14 seconds off the cooldown. Spend the points after that on Willpower T2, then Flask T2.

### How does Warden's Binding Word work?

Binding Word curses an enemy hero from up to 15 m away. If they haven't moved 20 m from where they were standing after 2.8 seconds, they take 110 damage (plus spirit scaling) and are immobilized for 1.75 seconds. At T3 they are also silenced while the timer runs. Hit them with Alchemical Flask or Slowing Hex first, so they can't dash out of range.

### Is Warden's Last Stand tanky while it is active?

Only for a short time. According to deadlock.wiki, Last Stand's 50% bullet and spirit resist, and the T3 Unstoppable, only apply during the 2-second charge. After that you're rooted for 6 seconds, and you survive by healing for 75% of the damage you deal to heroes. Cast it after you've locked a target down, not to start a fight.

### How do you counter Warden in Deadlock?

Keep a dash or stamina ready when he curses you, so you can get 20 m away within 2.8 seconds. Binding Word can also be dispelled, and Indomitable and Unstoppable block it. Against Last Stand, back out of its 12 to 16 m radius or burst him once the 2-second charge ends. Healing reduction such as Healbane (-35% incoming healing) also cuts his lifesteal.
