## 🎯 The core idea

> Lash is a burst initiator, not a brawler. You climb for height, Ground Strike into a target, Flog them for damage and healing, then leave on Grapple or your last stamina before the enemy can trade back. Death Slam wins fights when you lock the right people and throw them somewhere useful. Spend stamina carefully, because once your burst is gone you have nothing left.

## Lash's role after City Never Sleeps

![Lash riding a zipline on the City Never Sleeps map in Deadlock with a spirit build item bar](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_y1080.webp)

The deadlock.wiki tags Lash as an Initiator and "High-Flying". He starts with 780 health (+50 per level), 3 stamina and a 10% spirit resist. His gun, Tale of the Tape, fires three-round bursts at 49.3 DPS. You won't win fights with it. Your damage is spirit damage from abilities, and how much you deal depends on how high up you are when you come down.

This Lash guide uses two videos. The main one is Prez's coaching session with AShires, uploaded on August 6, 2026. That is before the September 16 balance patch and the September 29 City Never Sleeps map rework. For the current build, we used a newer full match: Yorty's "Lash Never Sleeps" from October 15, 2026, played on the new map. The image above is from that match. We checked every number against the wiki.

Lash's patch history doesn't line up with the main video. On September 16 his gun falloff dropped to 16m–48m, Ground Strike's T3 got stronger, Flog's heal fell from 50% to 40%, and Grapple's T2 damage buff got shorter. The wiki lists no Lash changes after that, up to the October 14 patch. Valve doesn't publish a deadlock Lash tier, so this guide won't give him a made-up tier placement.

## Ground Strike: height is your damage

![Lash Ground Strike tooltip showing 18s cooldown and 10m range during a Deadlock lane fight](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0108_lnre1lj.webp)

<span class="badge free">free</span> Ground Strike is the core of Lash's abilities. On the ground, it is a stomp. In the air, Lash dives down and hits a 120-degree wedge in front of him. Damage grows with the distance you fall. The tooltip in this frame shows the current 18s cooldown and 10m range.

| Ground Strike (wiki, current) | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Base stomp damage | 60 (spirit scaling x0.791) |
| Damage per meter fallen | 5.5 up to 25m, then 4.2 per meter |
| Cooldown | 18s (cut from 21s on June 30, 2026) |
| T1 (1 AP) | -10s cooldown |
| T2 (2 AP) | Knock-up, plus a 40% slow for 3s |
| T3 (5 AP) | +120% damage per meter and better spirit scaling |

Prez says there is a "soft cap" on height damage. The wiki explains it: damage per meter drops after 25m, so climbing far higher than that adds less and less. You can also aim the strike while you fall, but only up to 90 degrees from where you were looking when you cast it. If you hit a flying enemy on the way down, you drag them to the ground with you. Prez's examples are an ulting Seven or a flying Vindicta. The wiki confirms the drag, and adds that you can cast Ground Strike from a zipline.

## Grapple resets your jumps and dashes

![Lash Grapple tooltip with 35s cooldown and T1 to T3 upgrades in the Deadlock sandbox](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0118_psaWhlg.webp)

Grapple pulls you toward any hero or unit within 30m. It has a 35s cooldown and one charge to start with. Its main value is the reset. Each Grapple restores your air jumps and air dashes, so one Grapple turns into a lot more height and a way out of a fight.

The ability upgrades for Grapple, per the wiki: T1 is -17s cooldown. T2 is +20m cast range and +7 weapon damage for 6s after you cast. It used to last 10s, and the video still shows 10s. T3 adds a second charge, and each cast gives +1 stamina and +60% air control. Using another charge only refreshes the T2 damage buff. It doesn't stack.

AShires adds a detail you won't see in any tooltip. Grapple sends you further to the right than to the left. If your target is on your far left, you fly straight forward instead of curving around them, so line up your grapples with that in mind.

## Flog: your lane trade and your heal

![Lash Flog tooltip showing 65 damage, 50 percent heal and 38 degree angle before the September patch](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0134.webp)

<span class="badge cheap">cheap</span> Flog whips everything in a cone up to 20m in front of you. It deals 65 spirit damage (x0.85 scaling) and heals you for part of the damage. The wiki puts the heal at 40% against heroes, and 16% against troopers and Haunts.

**Correction:** the tooltip in this video shows 50% heal and a 38-degree angle. The wiki says the September 16, 2026 patch changed these to 40% heal and 40 degrees. The same patch also cut Flog T3 to +25 degrees and +15% heal (it was +40 degrees and +20%), so a fully upgraded Flog now heals less than the video shows.

| Flog upgrade | Effect (wiki) |
| --- | --- |
| T1 | Targets get -28% move speed for 3s |
| T2 | Targets get -30% fire rate, and Flog gets -16s cooldown |
| T3 | +80 damage, +25 degrees, +15% heal |

Prez says T2 is like a free Rusted Barrel when you lane against heroes who rely on their guns. Against Silver or Vindicta, two points in Flog make every trade go your way.

## Death Slam: lock on, look, then throw

![Lash casting Death Slam over a group near the Archmother base in Deadlock](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0186.webp)

Lash's ultimate has a 170s cooldown and a 20m cast range. You hold focus on enemies to connect whips to them. When the channel ends, they are lifted, stunned and thrown to wherever your cursor points. Base throw distance is 14m, and it grows with spirit range. Anyone in the landing zone also takes damage (105, x0.975 scaling) and is slowed by 40% for 4s. Press Fire to throw early. The wiki notes the cooldown went up from 150s to 170s, and T2 dropped from -40s to -35s, in an undocumented June 30 change.

Upgrades: T1 adds +12m max throw distance. T2 cuts the cooldown by 35s. T3 stuns enemies in the landing radius for 1.2s and adds +6m cast range.

AShires's ult tips, in short:

- **Look at your throw target right away.** Once the circle locks, start aiming at where you'll throw them. If you keep looking at the enemies, you waste the channel, and enemies with an escape will break free.
- **One target is enough.** Lifting a single carry like Infernus with no way out can win the fight on its own.
- **Use the room.** The throw goes from the enemy's position to your cursor. In the video AShires throws a target out of a doorway, because throwing him straight down would have left him stuck on a wall.

The wiki lists ways to stop Death Slam. You can't connect through Cosmic Veil. Unstoppable suppresses the stun, and Indomitable prevents the disable. Each enemy has a 0.4s grace period before an incomplete connection breaks.

## Lash skill order and ability upgrades

![Lash airborne over a rooftop at 25 minutes on the reworked Deadlock map](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_y1500.webp)

Upgrades cost 1, 2 and 5 Ability Points for T1, T2 and T3. AShires plays what he calls the last slam-max Lash build. He also admits that moving two points from Ground Strike into Flog would make it stronger. So here is a general Lash skill order based on the videos' priorities and the current wiki values. It's our recommendation, not a copy of anyone's build code.

| Order | Pick | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | Ground Strike T1 | Cuts the cooldown from 18s to 8s, so you can slam every time it matters in lane |
| 2 | Flog T1, then T2 | Slow, then -30% fire rate and -16s cooldown, so you win trades against gun laners |
| 3 | Ground Strike T2 | Knock-up and slow make every slam into a setup |
| 4 | Grapple T1, then T2 | More grapples means more height and more ways out |
| 5 | Death Slam T2 | -35s cooldown, so you have your ult for more fights |
| 6 | Ground Strike T3 | Buffed on September 16 to +120% damage per meter, your main late-game damage |
| 7 | Grapple T3, Flog T3, Death Slam T1/T3 | Extra charge, extra heal, more throw distance or a landing-zone stun |

If your lane opponents punish slams (more on this below), take Flog T2 earlier and put off Ground Strike T2.

## Current Lash build, early to late game

![Lash late game item bar with Tankbuster, Greater Expansion and Boundless Spirit on the new Deadlock map](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_y1700.webp)

Yorty's October 15, 2026 match on the City Never Sleeps map gives us a build we could check frame by frame. We read his item bar at about 6, 13, 18 and 28 minutes. The image above shows the final bar. If you want the best Lash build deadlock has right now, this is the most recent one we could find played on the new map. It's still one player's match, not a tested meta list. All item stats come from the wiki.

| Phase | Items in Yorty's slots | What they do for Lash |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Early (lane, about 6 min) | Headshot Booster, Extra Spirit, Mystic Expansion, Mystic Burst, Extra Charge | +10 spirit power, +20% ability range, bonus damage on abilities over 80 damage, a second Grapple charge (+7 spirit power on charged abilities), and a 45-damage headshot |
| Mid (about 13–18 min) | Trophy Collector, Cold Front, Improved Spirit, Mystic Shot, Headhunter, Stamina Mastery | Souls and ability range from kills and assists, an AoE slow, +18 spirit power, and +2 stamina with an extra air jump or dash |
| Late (about 28 min) | Tankbuster, Greater Expansion, Boundless Spirit, Healbane, Dispel Magic, Superior Cooldown, plus Extra Charge, Mystic Shot, Headhunter, Trophy Collector, Stamina Mastery | Bonus damage from the target's current health, +30% ability range, +30 spirit and +15% spirit power, -35% healing on enemies, a cleanse, and +20% cooldown reduction |

For your Lash late game build, the upgrade paths are what matter. Mystic Burst becomes Tankbuster, Mystic Expansion becomes Greater Expansion, Extra Spirit goes to Improved Spirit and then Boundless Spirit, and Headshot Booster becomes Headhunter. Cold Front is gone from the final bar, so it was sold to make room. Ability range matters a lot because it makes Ground Strike's wedge and Death Slam's landing zone bigger.

Lash items worth knowing from the coaching video:

- **Restorative Locket** <span class="badge setup">setup</span> stores a stack each time an enemy uses an ability within 32m. Activate it to heal and get back up to 3 stamina. Prez likes it as a safety net while you learn Lash, but warns that relying on it builds bad habits. It was nerfed on September 16 (heal per boon 0.5 to 0.45, range 35m to 32m).
- **Spirit Shielding** and **Dispel Magic** are the defensive picks Prez prefers over the Locket. "You can't really out-skill a Dispel Magic."
- **Stamina Mastery** comes up in both videos. **Correction:** Prez says it gives an extra jump *and* an extra dash. The wiki says it allows one extra air jump *or* air dash before you land, plus +2 stamina and +23% air jump/dash distance.

## Lash laning: choose the lane where you can slam

![Lash using a ledge corner boost for height in a Deadlock lane](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_1995.webp)

<span class="badge free">free</span> Good Lash laning starts in the draft. Prez's biggest lane tip: if the other lane is Ivy and Vindicta, both can dodge your slam (Ivy turns to stone, Vindicta flies away) and then punish you. Swap lanes, put points into Flog, and win with trades instead.

Then follow AShires's top lane rule: **don't eat the wave.** Trooper damage piles up on Lash because he fights at close range. In the video's opening 1v1, AShires calls this the number one mistake players make, even up to about mid-Ascendant. While you trade, he freezes the wave, and Prez loses the heal he would have got from it.

In lane, look for small objects you can climb for free height. The frame above shows Prez's easy corner boost. Hold jump to mantle a ledge, and jump again when you feel a small drop after the mantle. Done right, you get launched up with a jump to spare, so you can slam an enemy who wasn't expecting any height. He also suggests learning the mantle slide: hold slide right after a mantle to keep your speed.

## Landing slams at full range

![AShires demonstrating a full range Ground Strike on a target in the Deadlock sandbox](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0515.webp)

This is AShires's first lesson, shown in the frame above. A slam that hits the target at the far edge of the wedge doesn't do more damage. It does keep you out of their reach. If you land right on top of a full-health Abrams, he can charge you into a wall. If you land at the edge, you can fly away before he does anything.

His other rule: know what you're slamming into. Slamming a full-health tank with a strong engage of their own is how new Lash players die. Before you dive, ask what happens when you land.

AShires also shares a mid-lane rule from the coached game. Against Mina, don't slam until she has used her second bat. The same goes for his own play. When his slam is on cooldown, he says, "I don't have slams so there's no point in me going in." Then he stays on high ground and waits.

## Stamina and Grapple discipline

![Lash climbing a building wall with 44,000 souls of items in the Deadlock sandbox](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_2048.webp)

<span class="badge skip">skip</span> Stop chaining double jump, double jump, grapple, double jump. AShires says this is the habit he sees most in new Lash players, and Prez calls it the number one thing to fix. All your damage comes in one burst: Ground Strike, Flog and a Headshot Booster or Headhunter shot. After that, your stamina and grapples are both your escape and your setup for the next slam. If you spend them getting in, you have nothing left for either.

Some practical Lash tips from the session:

- Wait longer between jumps, and bounce off walls more than you think you should.
- The less stamina or Grapple you have left, the less you should look for a slam. Big slams are for when you have plenty of both.
- Getting extremely high for every slam isn't worth it. Past 25m, the wiki shows damage per meter drops from 5.5 to 4.2.

## Jungle Haunts, walkers and the new map

![Lash next to a jungle camp in the Deadlock sandbox on the pre City Never Sleeps map](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0565_9DNOK2I.webp)

<span class="badge setup">setup</span> AShires surprised Prez by saying Lash should be in the jungle a lot. From the side-lane vents in the old map you could slam almost any nearby camp, and he puts a Ground Strike at about 4.8k souls at roughly 85% of a camp's health. **This frame and the specific spots in the video are from the old map**: the nursery sign camp, the spiked rooftop you could walk along without taking damage, the church windows, and the boxes in the Hidden King base. The September 29 rework changed the map and replaced neutral camps with Haunts, so treat those spots as examples of the idea, not routes.

The idea still works on the new map:

- **Slam camps as enemies take them.** In the rank-one gameplay, AShires waits for the enemy to start a camp and then slams in. This finishes the camp and hits the heroes taking it. Skip the big camps. "Tier threes aren't your thing on Lash."
- **Use the new vents for height and cover.** City Never Sleeps added Steam Vents that make you invisible to enemy heroes and give light regen while you stand in them. Jump Pads still launch anyone. Waiting unseen next to a fight before a slam is good Lash play, but we inferred this from the wiki's vent rules. The videos don't show it.
- **Chip walkers when the lane is open.** Prez saw AShires do this a lot. Push up with the wave, Ground Strike and Flog the walker, then grapple out, and never slam during its stomp. Since City Never Sleeps, walkers show a stomp range indicator when you get close, which makes this timing easier.

In base fights, AShires's routine was to move between the base vents until he had a clear slam (attacking) or ride the zip and commit right away (defending). The video also says a hero on a zipline in base shows a blue outline after 3–4 seconds and is then safe from being knocked off. We couldn't find that on the wiki, so it is the video's claim.

## Teamfights: initiate, then get out

![Lash slamming into a teamfight during AShires rank one Lash gameplay in Deadlock](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_1590_2NzNqFh.webp)

In a teamfight, Lash's job is to start the fight on the target your team can kill. Height from Grapple, then Ground Strike into the backline, Flog the group to heal back what you took, and get out while you still have stamina. In the rank-one gameplay, AShires reaches the fight without spending stamina on the way, so he always has a way out.

Hold Death Slam until your team is ready to follow. Give them a moment to turn toward you, then throw. In the frame above, Lash is slamming into a fight during the rank-one game. His loop is simple: get in, deal your burst, get out, and do it again once your cooldowns are back.

## Lash counters and lane matchups

![Lash taking cover behind a wall in mid lane against Mina in Deadlock](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/10/final_0905_3WR62LB.webp)

This frame is from the start of the coached game, when AShires calls mid-lane Mina "a very hard counter" to Lash. Her bats give her more range and damage than you have, and the only trade you win is Flog followed by an immediate exit. These are the Lash counter matchups the videos mention:

| Matchup | Why it's hard (from the videos) | What to do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Mina | Out-ranges and out-damages Lash, and her bats punish slams | Play passive, farm boxes, and only Flog then leave |
| Ivy and Vindicta | Stone form and flight dodge your slam, then they punish | Swap lanes or level Flog |
| Silver and Victor | Silver bullies the lane, Victor tanks your damage | Stay at arm's length and don't force trades |
| Abrams at full HP | Charges you into a wall if you slam too close | Slam at the far edge of the wedge, or wait |
| Pocket | Named by Prez as a hero who punishes slams easily | Don't slam first |

If you're playing against Lash, AShires suggests Spirit Shielding as early-game value. The wiki adds Unstoppable and Indomitable against Death Slam, and Debuff Reducer against Ground Strike's slow and Flog's debuffs. Lash, in turn, is good against anyone who can't escape: grounded carries, and fliers you can pull down with Ground Strike.

## How this guide was fact-checked

- **From deadlock.wiki (current values, checked October 19, 2026):** Lash's base stats and role tags, gun falloff, all four abilities' damage, cooldowns, ranges and T1–T3 upgrades, the Ground Strike 25m scaling breakpoint, the Death Slam counters (Cosmic Veil, Unstoppable, Indomitable), Lash's full update history (June 30, August 12 and September 16, 2026), the item stats for every item in the build table, and the City Never Sleeps patch notes (Steam Vents, Haunts, walker stomp indicator).
- **Corrections to the August 2026 video:** Flog heal is 40%, not 50%. Flog angle is 40 degrees, not 38. Flog T3 is +25 degrees and +15% heal. Grapple T2's damage buff lasts 6s, not 10s. Restorative Locket's range is 32m. Stamina Mastery gives one extra air jump *or* dash, not both. All of these come from the September 16, 2026 patch or the item's wiki page.
- **From the videos only (no wiki page covers them):** AShires's slam-spacing, stamina and ult tips, the Grapple right-side bias, the camp-damage estimate at 4.8k souls, the zipline blue-outline timing, and the matchup notes. The current build is the item bar we read from Yorty's October 15 match, not a published build code.
- **Our own recommendations:** the skill order table and the Steam Vent ambush idea, both built from wiki values.

## What this guide doesn't answer

- **Exact damage numbers at your spirit power.** Scaling depends on your items. Check the in-game tooltip with your build.
- **New-map route spots.** The video's rooftops, signs and camp spots are from the old map. We haven't charted the new map.
- **Street Brawl Lash.** The wiki lists a 10% Ground Strike damage cut and its own item draft for that mode, which this guide doesn't cover.
- **Matchups against the six City Never Sleeps heroes** (Nurse Harrow, Rat King, Solomon, Deadman Danny, Baba, Violet). They are too new for either video to cover.
- **Ranked tier placement.** Valve publishes no tier list, and the patch history alone doesn't support one.

## FAQ

### What is the best Lash build in Deadlock right now?

The most recent Lash build we could check on the City Never Sleeps map starts with Headshot Booster, Extra Spirit, Mystic Expansion, Mystic Burst and Extra Charge. Mid game it adds Trophy Collector, Improved Spirit, Mystic Shot, Headhunter and Stamina Mastery. Late game it finishes with Tankbuster, Greater Expansion, Boundless Spirit, Healbane, Dispel Magic and Superior Cooldown. Spirit power and ability range make Ground Strike and Death Slam hit harder and wider.

### What is the best skill order for Lash?

Take Ground Strike T1 first: it cuts the cooldown from 18s to 8s. Then take Flog T1 and T2 for the slow, -30% fire rate and -16s cooldown, then Ground Strike T2 for the knock-up. After that, Grapple T1/T2 and Death Slam T2 (-35s cooldown). Save 5 points for Ground Strike T3, which got +120% damage per meter on September 16, 2026. If your lane opponents punish slams, take Flog T2 earlier.

### How does Lash's Ground Strike damage work?

Ground Strike does 60 base damage plus damage for every meter you fall before landing. That is 5.5 per meter up to 25m, then only 4.2 per meter after that, so climbing far above 25m adds little. It hits a 120-degree wedge in front of you, and hitting a flying enemy drags them to the ground. Land at the far edge of the wedge so the target can't trade back.

### How do you use Lash's Death Slam ult well?

Connect your whips, then start looking at where you want to throw right away instead of watching the enemies. The throw goes from where they are to your cursor, 14m base distance, and anyone in the landing zone is damaged and slowed. One target with no escape is enough to use it on. Cosmic Veil blocks the connection, and Unstoppable or Indomitable stop the stun.

### Who counters Lash in Deadlock?

Mina is the hardest lane matchup: her bats out-range Lash and punish slams. Ivy and Vindicta can dodge Ground Strike with stone form and flight, Silver bullies the lane, and a full-health Abrams can charge you into a wall if you slam too close. Spirit Shielding, Debuff Reducer, Unstoppable and Indomitable are the items that blunt Lash's slam and ult.
