## Secure your neighbours before they become problems

Opening diplomacy keeps your campaign stable and lays the groundwork for confederations.

Begin by offering trade agreements and non-aggression pacts to other Dark Elf factions nearby—these make future confederations more likely and prevent costly wars. Factions such as the Cult of Pleasure often grow strong and are best kept friendly, so balance your military power with steady diplomatic gestures like trade and alliances. Maintaining good relationships with Dark Elf neighbours is usually better than treating them as default enemies; you want them as allies, not obstacles.

## Decide what to do about Grombrindal and Valkia

Managing early threats to Naggarond is key for campaign flow and advantage.

<ol class="checklist">
  <li>
    <label><input type="checkbox"><span class="name">Consider Grombrindal, west of Naggarond, as a major threat.</span></label>
    <em>He becomes hostile quickly <a class="jump" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ngPW6QUA8Q&t=304s" target="_blank" rel="noopener">5:04 ↗</a></em>

## Use Shades and Darkshards the right way

Compare the key properties and uses of your main core units:

| Unit | Role | Best Used For | Formation and tactics | Cost & Recruitment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Shades** | Fast, stealthy, armor-piercing missile/melee | Flanking attacks, offensive armies | Two lines vs. slow enemies; checkerboard vs. fast enemies. Use terrain (hills, rocks) for defense. | More expensive. One turn recruit. |
| **Darkshards (Shields)** | Defensive missile, with shield protection | Homeland defense, rebellions, garrison, marine loot | Checkerboard or layered formations to absorb ranged/flying attacks | Cheaper. One turn recruit. |
| **Black Guard of Naggarond** | Elite anti-large heavy infantry | Flank guard, support for missile lines | Guard flanks; small numbers only due to lack of missile—needs Shades/Darkshards to back up | One turn recruit (Naggarond only, with building) |

Tier 3 Shades with greatswords add bonus versus infantry and melee armor-piercing. Shades benefit from stacking as many as possible in **Malekith**’s main army, while extra Darkshards are ideal for defending your territory.

To set up a checkerboard formation: line up all missile units, select every other one with Ctrl, then drag those back using Alt plus left mouse button. Use defensive terrain and lure enemies in with mobile heroes like Sorceresses.

## Choose the right heroes and lords

Army hero choices shape both battlefield performance and campaign growth.

Death Hags mostly boost replenishment rate but bring little else, so do not rely on them for direct combat. Sorceresses are essential—every army should have one. Once mounted, they gain high speed and can drop spells quickly; the Banner of Swiftness makes them even better at repositioning. Masters are solid melee heroes and improve unit experience through training; they are particularly helpful with the Spiteful trait for hard fight matchups (e.g. Valkia or Alith Anar). Khainite Assassins excel at assassinations and assaults on the campaign map but are not key fighters in battle.

Male Dreadlords are the default pick, thanks to their ranged ability and Black Dragon mount. The female variant lacks a crossbow and is therefore less versatile here. Beastmasters should only be taken if building monster-heavy armies, which is unlikely in this opening. Supreme Sorceresses are best reserved for when hero slots are full; they are fragile until mounted.

Murderous Prowess and Murderous Mastery are triggered by kills and fill a meter that grants temporary buffs. These tally all deaths, meaning even friendly chaff counts towards activation.

## Build Malekith for mobility and melee power

**Malekith** develops from a slow foot lord to a fast, destructive spell and melee threat. Build his skills for army strength and transition to spells only once mobility is gained.

<ol class="checklist">
  <li>
    <label><input type="checkbox"><span class="name">Malekith starts immobile; invest early skill points in red line.</span></label>
    <em>Three points in Raid Leader (damage) and three in Slaughterlord (for Black Guard support) <a class="jump" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ngPW6QUA8Q&t=1025s" target="_blank" rel="noopener">17:25 ↗</a></em>
  </li>
  <li>
    <label><input type="checkbox"><span class="name">Wait to focus on spellcasting until cold one mount is unlocked.</span></label>
    <em>Immobile lords are poor spellcasters <a class="jump" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ngPW6QUA8Q&t=1074s" target="_blank" rel="noopener">17:54 ↗</a></em>
  </li>
  <li>

## Research the tech tree in the right order

Focus your technology so your Shade-heavy armies scale quickly.

<ol class="checklist">
  <li>
    <label><input type="checkbox"><span class="name">Each tier has three research nodes; all must be completed before progressing.</span></label>
    <em>Required to unlock next upgrades <a class="jump" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ngPW6QUA8Q&t=1144s" target="_blank" rel="noopener">19:04 ↗</a></em>
  </li>
  <li>
    <label><input type="checkbox"><span class="name">In Shade-heavy plans, prioritize upgrades: Reworked Crossbows (range), Hit and Run (speed).</span></label>
    <em>Goes straight to second tree <a class="jump" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ngPW6QUA8Q&t=1162s" target="_blank" rel="noopener">19:22 ↗</a></em>
  </li>
  <li>
    <label><input type="checkbox"><span class="name">Next tier adds armor for Shades; finish three nodes each tier before moving on.</span></label>
    <em>Always choose upgrades for core units <a class="jump" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ngPW6QUA8Q&t=1181s" target="_blank" rel="noopener">19:51 ↗</a></em>
  </li>
  <li>
    <label><input type="checkbox"><span class="name">Keep moving through the tech tree, scaling bonuses for the units you use most.</span></label>
    <em>Don’t waste research on less-used branches <a class="jump" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ngPW6QUA8Q&t=1221s" target="_blank" rel="noopener">20:21 ↗</a></em>
  </li>
</ol>

## Make Black Arks do the heavy lifting

**Black Arks** solve the central recruitment bottleneck that **Dark Elves** suffer. Cities normally recruit only two units per turn until very late game, with minor improvements through technology and rare high-tier buildings. No provincial commandments improve this, so armies are built slowly unless alternative routes are used.

A Black Ark, once constructed, provides two recruitment slots at tier 1, with each level adding more through its main settlement building. You need 800 slaves and a Slave Pen to launch the ritual for your first Black Ark, so prioritize these as soon as possible. The Arena building increases recruit experience, making new armies much more competitive from their inception.

If you deploy armies in the Black Ark's recruitment ring, you can build their stack much faster than using cities alone. Bombardments are strong but AI opponents tend to dodge unless committed, so the main value is recruitment, not direct battle intervention.

![The Black Ark recruitment screen demonstrates how multiple units can be recruited at once, solving Dark Elf recruitment bottlenecks.](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/08/08-black-ark.jpg "The Black Ark recruitment screen demonstrates how multiple units can be recruited at once, solving Dark Elf recruitment bottlenecks.")

## Manage slaves as the main economic resource

Slaves are the engine of the Dark Elf economy. Most buildings—growth, public order, and income—deliver larger bonuses when slave thresholds are met for that province. Even without enough slaves, they still provide base bonuses, so build regardless.

Slaves are spent instantly for accelerated construction, diktats, public order, and province growth. Battle captives are the primary source, so always choose to enslave after most fights unless the yield is negligible. Waterfront settlements (docks) generate slaves passively, making them highly valuable. Karand Kar is especially important; its slave trader palace gives +100 slaves per turn and -5% slave upkeep across all provinces, helping bonuses trigger and reducing losses.

High slave numbers degrade public order: poor order kills slaves faster. Use the growth diktat strategically on major settlements when you have excess slaves. For most campaigns, running out is rare as frequent battles easily refill stockpiles.

![Karond Kar's port provides substantial bonuses to income, growth, and slave production, demonstrating how slave management fuels the Dark Elf economy.](https://api.guides-factory.com/media/uploads/2026/08/09-slave-economy.jpg "Karond Kar's port provides substantial bonuses to income, growth, and slave production, demonstrating how slave management fuels the Dark Elf economy.")

## Also worth knowing

<div class="tipbox alt"><span class="tag">Before you commit</span>

- **Turn 1 Black Ark is possible**: By saving Lokhir's Black Ark admiral in a Lokhir campaign, then starting as **Malekith**, you can begin with a turn 1 Black Ark with a special building.
- **Checkerboard formation is critical**: The checkerboard setup for missile units is easy to overlook but extremely effective against fast-moving enemies.
- **Murderous Mastery counts all deaths**: The meter fills from both friendly and enemy unit deaths; sacrificing chaff can trigger it more quickly.
- **Masters have strong early value**: Masters (especially with Spiteful trait) are excellent for pinning tough enemies like Valkia and Alith Anar. Recruit before demolishing barracks at campaign start.
- **High control reduces slave usage**: The higher your provincial control, the fewer slaves are consumed each turn. Raiding stance and Black Ark slave-building can generate large passive slave income.

## FAQ

### What units should Dark Elves build around?

Shades and Darkshards are the main damage dealers. Shades are the stronger offensive choice, while Darkshards with shields are cheaper and better for holding territory or facing ranged-heavy enemies. Most armies work best when they are built around those two units first.

### Should Malekith take Tyrant or War Leader?

War Leader is the better pick for most campaigns. It gives upkeep reduction, lord recruit rank, and stronger sacking and looting modifiers. Tyrant is described as too passive for the same plan.

### Are Black Arks worth investing in early?

Yes. Their main advantage is extra recruitment capacity, which is the biggest bottleneck in Dark Elf army building. They also help new armies start with more experience if you build the arena structure.

### How do you get slaves reliably?

Battle captives are the main source, and docks also generate slaves. Water settlement targets are therefore especially valuable, and controlling Karand Kar also gives a large ongoing slave income plus lower slave upkeep.
